LIP SERVICE IN SEARCH OF THE PERFECT POUT
Full and voluptuous lips are associated with beauty, youthfulness and femininity. Throughout history, however, if you weren’t blessed with a perfect pout from birth, the only solution was to create the illusion of plumper lips with lipstick and/ or lip liner. Recent advances in aesthetic medicine have changed that. Today, fillers and neurotoxins empower the proverbial pucker. Thanks in part to social media stars like Kylie Jenner, who talks openly about undergoing such treatments, nonsurgical lip enhancement is now one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures. So, what constitutes the perfect pout? While everyone is different and the perception of beauty varies by culture, a longstanding principle in aesthetic medicine describes the ideal proportion for lips as an upper-lip-to-lower-lip ratio of 1/3 to 2/3, meaning the lower lip is larger than the top lip. Other aspects of ideal lips include distinct philtral columns, the two vertical lines that come down from the central nose to join the Cupid’s bow, the two peaks in the middle of the top lip. Fullness in the tubercles, the prominent points in the body of the lips, is also considered to be desirable, as are upturned corners of the mouth and overall symmetry. Due to aging, genetics and environmental

factors, these characteristics change with the passage of time. The distance between the nose and top lip elongates, the lips deflate, the Cupid’s bow and philtral columns flatten, the corners of the mouth downturn and the skin around the mouth becomes wrinkled and coarse. Fillers – temporary, injectable gels such as Belotero, Juvederm and Restylane – can add volume to the lips, correct asymmetry and fill in fine lines around the mouth. These fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring structural component of skin. Treatments, which are virtually pain-free, involve injecting tiny droplets of filler in and around the lips with results typically lasting six to nine months. Neurotoxins – such as Botox, Xeomin and Dysport, which are commonly used to help eliminate wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes – can also be used
in the lower face to help enhance the appearance of the mouth. Neurotoxins work by interfering with signaling between nerves and the muscles they control, resulting in a weakening of the muscles that create movement and wrinkles. Botox injected along the upper and lower lips, for example, can help to soften the mouth’s vertical creases, often referred to as “smoker’s lines.” Botox can also help to create an upturn in the corners of the mouth, reversing the downturn that occurs with aging. Results usually last three to four months. Lips are the central focus of the lower face, so enhancing their natural beauty – simply, affordably, and comfortably – is a great way to create a younger, refreshed appearance. Thanks to the fillers and neurotoxins, aging doesn’t require kissing lovely lips goodbye. —Tracy Leong, M.D.

EDITOR’S NOTE
ACTION PACT
I
t was freezing when I graduated from college in Michigan in December nineteen-ninety-something. Having worn a parka and goggles while delivering pizzas to drunken frat boys in the middle of the night for the previous four-ish winters, I was ready to get warm. The day after commencement, I drove home to Philadelphia to see my clan, fill my ’84 Toyota Celica with CDs, and then hit the road for warmer climes. The night before I left, Mom threw me a graduation party. The whole family came. The photo here is of my dad and me at that party. I remember his eyes tearing when he congratulated me. He said he was proud, and I felt it — felt happy, loved, worthwhile — a stark contrast to a few years earlier, when I had been a temporary degenerate, failing out of school after spending pizza-delivery money on weed instead of books. It was the eve of new beginnings. I was leaving for California first thing in the morning. Unable to sleep, I woke my mom and stepfather to say goodbye, and then drove to my dad’s house to leave a note versus ringing the doorbell before dawn. I don’t remember precisely what I wrote, but there was a rhyme in there, and a reference to Manifest Destiny. I was on top of the world. Five days later, I arrived in San Diego, found a roommate in The Reader and moved into an apartment behind the Vons in Pacific Beach. Within a couple weeks, I landed a part-time job with The La Jolla Light, writing about high school sports for $50 an article. I had been talking to Dad on the phone every day and couldn’t wait to share the news. His reaction made my heart sink. “You can’t live on $150 a week, David,” he said. His pride had vanished so quickly, or at least it seemed to as he spoke. We didn’t talk much in the days following. A couple weeks later, I got a call from my father’s best friend. Dad had died. His heart stopped while he was jogging down the street. No heart attack, just some sort of electrical failure. He never smoked or drank, but he collapsed after shoveling the sidewalk and going for a run. I flew back to Philly a broken man. I know Dad loved me. I know there were times he was proud of me, but I caused some trouble as a kid, so there were un-proud moments, too. And we ended on one. Fast forward 23 years … Three weeks ago, The San Diego-Union Tribune acquired PacificSD — the magazine you’re reading now, which I started 10 years ago. Basically, media bigwigs bought the magazine, and now I’ll work for them, er, us, for the next 10 years. That’s the plan, anyway, as long as my new bosses don’t throw me out first. (Hopefully they won’t read this.) My father’s best friend tells me Dad would be proud of me, and I
suspect he’s right, but I can’t really feel it. What I feel instead is pride in my own son. Lex is 4, and I’m so proud of him it hurts. I’m proud of how he plays, how he laughs, everything he says. I can’t imagine life without him. Dad’s death at age 52 doesn’t mean I have only six years left, but I think about it sometimes, especially on Father’s Day. To increase my chances of survival, I avoid jogging and shoveling snow. In case I do meet an untimely demise, I want to shower Lex with as much love, pride and sound paternal advice as humanly possible while I’m still here. My father used to say, “Life is not a dress rehearsal.” Get out there, carpe diem, seize the friggin’ day. Don’t whine about your situation, change it. (I’m talking to myself here.) I’ve since promised myself, and my father, to heed that advice. I just took the biggest leap of my life, leaving a comfort zone for new horizons, a strange land where major national newspaper companies are morphing into digital content providers, and where PacificSD now has a loving staff of 400 to become proud of its new baby. Join me, won’t you, dear Reader? You’ve been part of the PacificSD family for a decade, and I’m proud as hell to have you along for this new ride. By the way, Dad would be proud we got Scott Eastwood (son of Clint, his favorite actor) for the cover this month. A chip off the old block. Sincerely,
David Perloff, Editor-in-Chief 14

WE ARE AT WAR BY CRAIG SEWING
regulations that keep assault rifles out of the hands of evildoers. But most of this discussion is merely a distraction from the real issue — terrorists. The guy from Orlando could simply have created a bomb with homemade materials. God help us when a biological weapon crosses one of our borders. At that point, we’ll wish the argument was still about guns. And if you don’t believe deploying biological weapons is the goal of terrorists, listen more closely to the beat of the drum this evil marches to. What if 50 deaths become five million? Are we ready for that news day? We are at war and we must declare our enemy: the radical strain of Islam. We must align our allies, beginning with our own citizens, peaceful Muslims and everyone around the world who believes in freedom. There are way more of us willing fight on the side of good, but a fight is absolutely required. We must erase the political lines that separate us and put all options on the table. We must strengthen our defenses, which, in this case, is going to require the loss of some civil liberties, i.e. the Patriot Act, phone surveillance and more. We need better border control, and we absolutely must go on the offense when and where it makes sense. At this point, however, we’re not even doing the things that make common sense, let alone the difficult measures winning this war necessitates. My thoughts and prayers go out to Orlando and the LGBT community. There’s zero ambiguity as to whether or not we’re at war. The only question is if we have the will to win it.

Despite being willing to identify the innocent victims in Orlando, however, our leadership is unwilling to identify the specific enemy who murdered these people. We are at war, not just another crappy news day, a war. An asymmetric war fought not on a battlefield but against an evil ideology. My prayers go out to those in Orlando and the LGBT community at large for the most recent illustration of this battle. Let’s be clear, this was not an act performed by a “lone wolf.” What a senseless term we continue to hear from this delusional media. It’s not one bad egg; it’s an ideology shared by millions. In the case of Bengazhi, our leadership went so far as to blame the U.S. for the death of several American heroes, suggesting it was an American-made video that led to the attack on the anniversary of 9/11. Our fault? It’s mind blowing. We’re in the midst of the most challenging war in the history of man, but our government is unwilling to identify who the real enemy is. But why? Is it out of fear of upsetting peaceful Muslims? That wouldn’t make sense, because peaceful Muslims are among the most upset about this situation. There are more than a billion peaceful Muslims, who compose the first group we should invite into this conversation and to help fight this evil. This fight isn’t against an entire religion, only the evil strain within it. And what about guns? Yes, there are more guns in the U.S. than there are people, and I’m all for thoughtful

“I do a lot of Muay Thai and jiu-jitsu,” says the 30-year-old son of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood. “I play golf. I surf. I go diving.” When he isn’t behaving like an action figure in real life, Eastwood acts like one in movies. His upcoming roster of films includes roles in Fast 8, the latest installment in the popular Fast and Furious franchise. He’ll also appear in Live By Night, a Prohibition-era drama written and directed by Ben Affleck, who also co-stars in the film. There’s more. “I’ve got Suicide Squad coming out next, in August,” Eastwood says. “After that, in the fall, Snowden comes out.” Slated for an August 5 release, the former is a superhero flick starring Will Smith, Jared Leto and Margot Robbie, among other big names in the biz. The latter is an Oliver Stone project (starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt) in which Eastwood will play an agent with the National Security Agency. To say Eastwood is getting a piece of the action is an understatement. Together with his starring role in Overdrive, a French action-thriller due out sometime this year, the rising star already has more than 30 films under his belt, including three directed by his father: Flags of Our Fathers, Gran Torino and Invictus. “Working with great directors is more important than [playing] a specific character,” Eastwood says. “If the director is a visionary and is a good director, he’s typically going to make a good film.” In hopes of establishing his acting career on his own merits versus those of his father, Eastwood arrived on the Hollywood scene as Scott Reeves, using his mother’s maiden name when he first began appearing on camera. Now, however, he’s upfront about being a chip off the old block. “Obviously, it’s a blessing; I’ve had a great life,” he says. “I’m comfortable in my own skin, I love my family, I love my dad ... couldn’t be more happy to be where I’m at, and I continue to want to work hard and stay a part of making films.” When the action subsides, Eastwood likes to enjoy what he calls the “calm, simple, active lifestyle” of North County, where he has resided since graduating from Loyola Marymount University, in Los Angeles, in 2008. But the dull moments never last, as his life near the homefront sometimes involves bartending at Solana Beach’s Saddle Bar, of which he is co-owner. “I’ve just kept going,” Eastwood says, “kept my head down and kept going.” Lights, camera …

Bikinis and board shorts give way to other sizzling outfits when America’s sexiest citizens head inland in summertime. Whether it’s a baseball jersey at the All-Star Game, a new hat for Opening Day at Del Mar, a Darth Vader costume at Comic-Con or almost nothing at Pride, what (and how much) to wear depends upon what turns you on.
DIAMOND JUBILEE BASEBALL’S BIGGEST STARS SWING INTO SAN DIEGO BY TONY LOVITT
F
or the third time since the Padres came into existence in 1969, San Diego will host Major League Baseball’s (MLB) annual All-Star Game this year. On July 12, Petco Park and the city at large will be in the spotlight as FOX televises the 87th Midsummer Classic, which pits all-stars from the National League (NL, the Padres’ and Dodgers’ league) against their counterparts from the American League (AL, the Angels’ league). The winning league earns home-field advantage for its representative in the World Series in October. The All-Star Game, first played in 1933 (the NL has won 43 times to the AL’s 41; they tied twice; no game was played in 1945), is the crown jewel of a five-day fanfare that will rock Downtown with baseball attractions, concerts and other special events July 8 to 12. MLB All-Star Fanfest, to be headquartered at San Diego Convention Center, will offer player appearances, interactive exhibits and memorabilia. “Whenever we’re hosting in a city with personality, we always try to pick up different elements that make the city shine,” says Marla Milller, MLB senior vice president, Special Events. Among the events with distinctive San Diego flavor are Soul Pose MLB All-Star Yoga (July 9 at 8 and 11 a.m. at Waterfront Park); The Color Run MLB All-Star 5K (July 10 at 7 a.m.), which starts Downtown, loops around the waterfront and
ends at Waterfront Park; and Play Ball Park for youth leagues (July 7 to 12, across from the Hilton Bayfront). “We do a lot of youthdevelopment activities in any host market that is hosting All-Star Week, but we’ve never built anything like Play Ball Park before,” says Miller. Three concerts (limited free tickets are available to the public) are slated for Embarcadero Marina Park South on Friday night (July 8) and Saturday afternoon and evening (July 9). “Each of the concerts themselves will draw in a different
audience and have a Southern Cal flavor,” Miller says. Petco Park will be the site of the popular Legends Celebrity Softball Game (July 10), All-Star Workout Day and Home Run Derby (July 11). On July 12, continuing a stellar All-Star Game tradition that began 11 years ago, All-Stars (chosen by fan balloting since 1970) will ride in Chevrolets along a red carpet route through the Gaslamp and into Petco Park. Whoever wins after the stars take the field, this one’s shaping up to be a homerun for San Diego. mlb.com/all-star-game

HORSING AROUND ON-TRACK FOR ANOTHER SCORCHING SEASON BY TONY LOVITT
W
hile topping Bing Crosby’s 1937 appearance at Del Mar’s first ever Opening Day might seem like a tall order, it’s a safe bet this year’s festivities would give ol’ Mister Turf ’n’ Surf a run for his money. “I think he’d absolutely love it,” says Craig Dado, senior vice president and chief marketing officer for Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, which produces the track’s racing season and its July 15 Opening Day. “Bing was all about putting on a show, and I think we do that more so here than anybody else.”
For some race fans, the season highlight is the $1 million Pacific Classic (August 20), Del Mar’s richest and most prestigious race. And this year, Dado says, there’s a possibility of a dream matchup between Kentucky Derby winners California Chrome (2014) and Nyquist (2016). In addition to its world-class thoroughbred racing and unparalleled people-watching potential, Del Mar’s 2016 offerings also include the Del Mar Barbecue State Championship (July 17), Food Truck Festival and San Diego Beer Fest (July 23), Classic Car Show and Chili Cookoff (August 6) and Pizza & Craft Beer Fest (August 20).
But it’s the Del Mar Summer Concert Series that really promises to rock the coastline. Headlining performers include Ziggy Marley (July 30), alt rockers 311 and reggae artist Matisyahu (August 13), and EDM duo Chromeo (September 3; see below for full line-up). Back for a 79th rendition, this year’s Opening Day will be held on a Friday for the first time, with the familiar, dulcet tones of track announcer Trevor Denman and his signature, “And away they go!” marking the start of the first race at 2 p.m. (4 p.m. on subsequent Fridays). The season runs into the sunset on Labor Day. dmtc.com

San Diego’s culinary prospects puffed like a soufflé in late spring when two unrelated French restaurants opened almost simultaneously in Bankers Hill and North Park. Gallic eateries long defined stylish dining in American cities, and then didn’t. Locally, Parc Bistro-Brasserie, in the former Croce’s Park West location on Fifth Avenue, and Et Voilà! French Bistro on Adams Avenue near 30th Street have reversed the situation about as fast as hungry patrons can say steak-frites. CONT. ON PAGE 76

*Parlez-vous français? If not, a quick clarification — S’il vous plaît means “If you please” in French. It’s the “SVP” in “RSVP” and the basis for the double-entendre (that’s French, too) “plate” pun, which seems a whole lot less fun after all this explanation, huh? Zut alors!

Orders for what he calls “normal price bottles” (which, to him, means bottles costing around $100) are rivaled by selections from a costlier Reserve List of what he calls “Wine Spectator-quality wines.” This, despite his intention for Parc be “all about casual, neighborhood dining, a home away from home for locals.” In 1971, representatives of the Soviet Union’s Montreal consulate caused a 13-yearold Minassian and his family to jump on a jet to Paris and live with a cousin for three months. “We defected from Armenia when I was 12, and then Soviet agents knocked on our door to take me back so I could do military service when I came of age,” he says. “When I came back from Paris, the Canadian government protected me.” He returned to Paris upon graduating high school. business,” he says. “I’ve been in it all my life, and once it’s in your blood... So here I am.” “Here” is a gracious restaurant with 140 seats, white tablecloths (“I can’t do without linens,” Minassian says) and a comprehensive French menu that includes such nightly specials as Tuesday’s roasted whole chicken for two, which he claims rivals the
birds at his favorite Paris bistro. As Frenchmen, Mifsud and Viale (respectively from Fréjus and Montélimar, both in the sunny south) came to the biz through education, not intimidation. At the event, 1,200 patrons enjoyed more than 30,000 mini margaritas. Holy mierda, that’s alotta tequila. Many are simple takes on pale ales and IPAs. So is this one, but the addition of rye lends biting spiciness to an already floral, restrainedly bitter hop profile, making for an impressive beer that shows what session ales are all about. WHO YOU CALLIN’ WUSSIE Since the late ’90s, Stone Brewing has used the voice of its imaginary (yet forceful) brand spokesperson, Arrogant Bastard, to express the company’s Big Beer-denigrating tagline, “fizzy yellow beer is for wussies.” Now, Arrogant Brewing is creating its own fizzy, yellow beer — a pilsner with extra hop appeal. hen he’s not heading up brewing operations at Abnormal Beer Co. (the in-house brewery sharing space with Abnormal Wine Co. at toptier RB restaurant The Cork and Craft), Derek Gallanosa teaches the principles of marketing to aspiring brewing-industry entrants via San Diego State University’s Business of Craft Beer Program. Long story short, dude schools people on beer… even in beer school. Brandon Hernández: What’s it like sharing space with a full kitchen and a winery? DEREK GALLANOSA: By having the brewery share the same space with an upscale restaurant and winery, we are able to expose Abnormal Beer Co. to more people. If visitors come for the food, they typically want to experience the other products made in-house. It is rare that we have a diner not indulge in either the house-made beer or wine.
What do you teach students at SDSU? I teach Marketing Craft Beer twice a year. I lecture on marketing philosophies and how to apply them to craft beer. The main reason why I teach that class is to pass along the knowledge that I learned throughout my career and educate the future of the industry, making our

What are some of the beers you’re proudest of producing? I love making IPAs, not only because I love drinking them, but because others love drinking them as well. Whatever Abnormal Beer Co. IPA is on tap, it’s always our top seller of the day. One particular IPA that stands out is the Year One IIPA, made specially for our one-year anniversary. Because of the absurd amount of hops that were used to make that beer, it probably will not be made on a regular basis. But when it was on tap, it was the talk of the bar. I personally felt like I drank a whole keg by myself. And to top things off, it took bronze at the San Diego International Beer Competition in the second mostcontested category.

HARD CORE
BEERS AT THE CENTER OF SAINT ARCHER’S BREWING ACTION HISTORY: Saint Archer launched with a Blonde/Kolsch-Style Ale, a Pale Ale and an IPA, the three styles its founders reach for most often. In 2014, the brewery added a White Ale, which won gold at 2014’s Great American Beer Festival. HOPS TO IT: Saint Archer’s Hoppy Pilsner began flowing in April. Modeled after the pilsners brewed in Northern Germany, it’s the ideal representation of a crisp, clean, flavorful, refreshing beer. UNCANNY: Now available are Saint Archer’s limited-edition cans of Blackberry Gose. Brewed in the style of Northern Germany’s tart beers. this low-ABV beer (4.0% alcohol) is the perfect drink for the outdoors. Its crisp, fruity esters play well with the salinity its Himalayan Pink Salt and the spice of its ground coriander. The addition of blackberry pureé adds a soft, fruit character that balances the tart front end.

I
t’s against the law in the Golden State for a person to serve alcoholic beverages at a bar before the age 21. For California native Kelly Clancey, that milestone couldn’t come soon enough. After growing up in the Central Valley, working for years in the service industry and enjoying an illustrious athletic career at Chico State University, she began concocting cocktails for customers the day she turned 21. After relocating to San Diego two years ago, Clancey worked at The Wood on Mission Boulevard until the popular PB spot closed for a remodel. Today, she’s making hay while the moon shines by serving up drink after drink at the hot new country bar and nightclub Moonshine Beach. Since swinging open its Pacific Beach doors in late May in the space formerly occupied by Typhoon Saloon, Moonshine Beach has complemented Cerveza Jack’s — the new cantina next door — and Moonshine Flats, the bar’s sister venue in East Village. A quick word with Clancey before the crowd starts rolling in ...
PacificSD: What’s been customers’ reactions to Moonshine Beach so far? KELLY CLANCEY: People love it. We’ve only been open three weeks, and you don’t know how many of the same faces I’ve seen all three days of the weekend all three weeks. Pacific Beach needed something like this. What makes the place awesome? It took us a while to open up, and I think that’s because of all the detail that went into this place. Our artists spent so much time on all these handmade signs. And, from the barrels to every little detail of the bar, everything is just so well thought out. In the women’s bathrooms, for instance, we have all these famous country artists on every door. Girls love to go in there like, ‘I’m going to use the Luke Bryan stall.’ We also do a lot of line dancing in here, but we teach the line dances, so you don’t have to know ’em to come and do ’em. What’s the music like? We host a lot of live concerts and bands almost every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. And we have big names coming through. We just had Chase Bryant here. Chase Bryant was in Pacific Beach! It’s so awesome. We have Old Dominion, Kellie Pickler, Cassadee Pope and lots of other big names coming soon. What have your customers been ordering to drink? A lot of our drinks are really simple and streamlined. We have a “Man’s Best Friend,” which is a shot of Hornitos and a can of PBR. That’s one of my favorite things to serve, because I’m all about efficiency. But we also use a lot of our moonshines. We have one cocktail called the “Cowboy Up.” It’s Dixie Moonshine, which is like a sweet-tea moonshine, and lemonade. It’s delicious. What do you do when you’re not at work? I work out, I compete in bikini
competitions and I go to the zoo a lot. I really, really love the zoo here. It’s one of my favorite things about San Diego. It’s so much fun. You can get a yearlong pass, and then go every day. You don’t have to spend any more money, but you get to see so many amazing animals. How did you get started in bikini competitions? I competed in track and field in college, and then, when I graduated, I was at a loss for something do with that competitive side of me. So, I started doing CrossFit workouts. When I moved here, I switched to bikini competitions. It’s a really good outlet for the athletic side of me, and the competitive side of me. Comic-Con’s coming? You stoked on that? I geek out on Harry Potter so hard. A lot of people make fun of me for it. Which Hogwarts House would you belong to? I’m pretty sure I’d be a Hufflepuff. I’m easy-tempered, low-maintenance, nice and maybe a bit of a pushover. I think that kind of goes in the Hufflepuff category.
Ocean Views... as far as the eye can sea.
Do you identify with any superheroes? I wanted to be Wonder Woman when I was little, for a really long time. I think I was Wonder Woman for Halloween for four years in a row. I just couldn’t give it up. Visit PB’s Hufflepuff Wonder Woman Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Taco Tuesdays at Moonshine Beach. Michelle and Justin met half and hour ago in the Epic Limo that’s about to deliver them to the launch site. Before they arrive, let’s review the pre-date interviews. PacificSD: Where are you from and where do you live now? MICHELLE: I was born in Mexico. Raised in San Diego. JUSTIN: I am originally from Los Angeles, lived there until I was 12, and then moved to Hawaii. From there I moved to Carmel Valley, where I live now.

What do you do for a living? MICHELLE: I do promotional modeling. JUSTIN: I work with my father’s company. I do some marketing help and computer tech for him, as well. What do you do for fun? MICHELLE: I love to dance, so anything that involves good music and good vibes, I’m there. JUSTIN: I love to go out and have memories with my friends. I can’t wait for it to get warm so I can enjoy all that S.D. has to offer in the summer. What are you best at? MICHELLE: I got great dance moves. JUSTIN: I love networking and making new friends. I pride myself in being able to please people.
What do you suck at? MICHELLE: Being on time. JUSTIN: Waking up. I am not a morning person. My day would start at 3 o’clock, if possible. What are you looking for in a date, physically and/or otherwise? MICHELLE: I look for a nice guy with a huge heart; and a good beard never hurts. JUSTIN: I look for personality more than looks; not that looks don’t matter. Girl’s gotta be able to hold a conversation, you know? Describe your special brand of sex appeal in five words or less. MICHELLE: Passionate, intense, loving, hot, pleasing. JUSTIN: Girls who can do both. CONT. ON PAGE 108

What do you like least about yourself? MICHELLE: That I’m a procrastinator. JUSTIN: Sometimes, I’m highly motivated, and other times, I’m not. I wish I could channel it better sometimes. Rate yourself on a scale from one to 10 for looks. MICHELLE: I would say a nine. I don’t really care how other people see me. It’s all about how I see myself, and sometimes I feel a ten, and that’s all that matters. JUSTIN: Nine-slash-ten.

How about for personality? MICHELLE: Nine, only because I could work on my patience. JUSTIN: Ten. My personality is my greatest quality. What’s your biggest fear? MICHELLE: Running out of time and not doing all the things I want to accomplish in life. JUSTIN: Spiders and the dwindling supply of whiskey in the United States. What traits could your date exhibit that would be dealbreakers? MICHELLE: Cocky or snobby. I
can’t deal with cocky people. JUSTIN: Being rude to service staff at a restaurant. How many people have you slept with? MICHELLE: I plead the fifth. JUSTIN: Eleven. Fill in the blanks: I want my blind date to be “blank” and “blank.” MICHELLE: Fun and awesome. JUSTIN: Fun and hot. Will the night end with a kiss, something more or something less? MICHELLE: You never know. If
the connection is there, if we vibe, then I’ll go with the flow of things. JUSTIN: Not sure, but I’ll be sure to brush my teeth and bring some gum. The balloon is nearly inflated as Michelle and Justin roll up. Once it’s ready for liftoff, the gravity of the situation becomes apparent, and they hop aboard. Moments later, they’re up, up and away … THANK YOU! EPIC LIMO 858.270.LIMO (5466) epiclimo.com CONT. ON PAGE 110

fter launching from Del Mar about an hour ago, the hot air balloon rose some 3,000 feet above the coastline before landing softly in a construction site in Carmel Valley. Once on terra firma, Michelle and Justin jump back into the limo, which had followed them from the launch pad to take them to dinner at Carmel Valley’s new Westroot Tavern, which opened at Pacific Highlands Ranch at the end of May. Inside Westroot, the couple orders drinks as they look over the menu. After they’ve had a chance to enjoy their appetizers, they’re split for mid-date debriefings. PacificSD: How’s it going so far? MICHELLE: It’s been good. He’s fun, he’s easygoing, he’s taking care of me. So, yeah, it’s good. JUSTIN: I’d give it like a seven out of ten. I just don’t want to be egotistical and think that she’s really into me, so that’s just where I’m coming from.
What were your first impressions? MICHELLE: He was a little nervous in the limo, so I was like, “Why is he nervous? It’s gonna be fun.” Then he got chill once he started drinking. He needed the liquid courage. JUSTIN: I think she’s really cute; she’s really pretty, really gorgeous. I’m lucky to be able to have drinks and dinner with her and spend an evening with her. Is this the type of person you’d normally date? MICHELLE: No. One, he’s younger than me. He is a party boy, like, a little to cray for me. He’s really fun, but he’s not the guy I would date. JUSTIN: Honestly, I really don’t have any type. As long as the person’s fun and outgoing and can, like, handle a couple drinks and can make a conversation, then I’m down to go out with them. How was the balloon ride? MICHELLE: It was really fun. I loved it. It was really hot up there, but it was really fun.
JUSTIN: The hot air balloon was fantastic. Thank you, Hendrick’s, for making that happen. Amazing landing, by the way. Being able to cruise over San Diego above the clouds … you can’t do that every day. What’s the most attractive thing your date has done so far? MICHELLE: I like that he likes to hold my things — like, hold my jacket, hold the door open for me. I like that. Like a gentleman; I like gentlemen. JUSTIN: Be really independent. What’s the least attractive thing your date has done so far? MICHELLE: He talks a lot about his ex girlfriend, which I don’t care about, but it’s like, “Okay, we get it.” JUSTIN: She really hasn’t done that many unattractive things. Maybe get off your Snapchat a lot. What would your parents say if you brought your date home? MICHELLE: They’d like him, because he’s fun, easygoing and crazy. He looks like a good boy, he’s just not, but he looks like one. JUSTIN: I know my mother
would be happy, because she’s Spanish. And my dad would be like, “Well, she’s hot as hell, so, good for you.” Rate your date on a scale from one to 10 for looks. MICHELLE: Nine; he’s pretty cute. JUSTIN: Ten. How about for personality? MICHELLE: Nine as well. JUSTIN: Ten. Do you want to kiss your date now? MICHELLE: No. JUSTIN: Yeah, I would definitely be down to kiss her. Does your date want to kiss you? MICHELLE: I don’t think so. I don’t think I’m his type, and that’s okay, because he’s not my type. JUSTIN: Not sure. THANK YOU! s the daters’ entrees arrive, the magazine crew finally leaves the couple alone to enjoy the rest of the evening away from the camera. The next morning, we call to see what we missed. Describe the limo experience. MICHELLE: It was fun. That’s where we got to talk and get to know each other the most. JUSTIN: The limo was awesome. How was Westroot Tavern? MICHELLE: It was really nice. I loved the décor. The service was amazing; they took really good care of us. And the food was amazing. JUSTIN: Really cool bar; service was great. I liked the fire pits outside. I also love how open it is. What did you eat and drink there? MICHELLE: I drank their Eastwood drink; it’s basically like a cucumber refresher drink that was yummy. I ordered the shishitos, ceviche and wings for appetizers, and I had the short rib. Everything was great. JUSTIN: I had an Old Fashioned to drink and their signature

Whiskey Sour. I had fish and chips, which were amazing, and for an app I had wings, which were fantastic and not too messy. Where did you go and what did you do for the rest of the evening after Westroot? MICHELLE: We went to a couple more bars in downtown San Diego. His best friend joined us in the limo, so we partied with him. JUSTIN: We went to Florent in downtown post-dinner for some more cocktails and partying. When did you get home? MICHELLE: That same night. JUSTIN: Around 2 in the morning. Was there a kiss or romantic exchange? MICHELLE: No. JUSTIN: I don’t kiss and tell. How and when did the date end? MICHELLE: It ended at the end of the night, after the bars. JUSTIN: Date ended after we went to Florent in the Gaslamp. Fill in the blanks. I wish my date had a bigger “blank” and a smaller “blank.” MICHELLE: I wish he had a bigger filter and a smaller mouth
JUSTIN: Not sure how to answer that one without being mean.
need to change anything or need any tips.
What was the best part of the date? MICHELLE: The hot air balloon was really cool, really calm and beautiful views. I loved it. JUSTIN: Dinner was fantastic. Being able to try new foods with someone was fun.
What did you learn about yourself last night? MICHELLE: That I have more patience than I thought. JUSTIN: Tequila, vodka and whiskey cause a horrible hangover.
What was the worst part? MICHELLE: At the end of the night, he got really drunk and got really loud. I wanted to separate myself from him, so I did. His friend and I left to OMNIA. JUSTIN: Me and her didn’t click really well, but we had fun enjoying San Diego’s nightlife. Will there be a second date? MICHELLE: No, I just don’t think he’s my type. Plus, he’s younger than I am. I need someone a little more mature. JUSTIN: No, I just really didn’t feel anything there. What’s one thing your date really should know before going on another date? MICHELLE: To not take over the date by being the loudest one in the room. JUSTIN: Nothing, she doesn’t
AFTERMATCH: While Justin scored nines at the mid-date break (“He’s pretty cute,” Michelle said), too many drinks made his appeal plummet, leading to his fall from grace. Michelle, too, was more attractive to Justin when the couple was walking on air. Things appeared to be going well when he gave her a 10 for personality and said, “Yeah, I would definitely be down to kiss her,” but her constant Snapchatting (and not paying attention to him) seemed to weigh heavily on him. Going on a date with someone who isn’t a good match, it turns out, is kinda like hanging out with hot air balloon operators — no matter what high points you may reach together, in the end, they’re going to bring you down.
