Before it seemed like the world would end in Y2K, Prince Rogers Nelson helped millions of fans worldwide see the light – and the bright side of 1999. The recording-world Renaissance Man’s 1983 chart-topper by the same name, from the album 1999, offered an optimistic view of life and is just one of countless Prince hits that influenced a generation. That same year (’83, unfortunately, not ’99), I became a man, and a DJ played “1999” at my Bar Mitzvah after-party in my dad’s basement. In case you haven’t been been to one, Bar Mitzvahs are where matchmaking grandmothers nudge pubescent kids to dance with future lawyers and doctors. And it’s where sixth and seventh graders slow-dance and ignore what the yentas (Yiddish word for “gossip,” usually referring to aunts and their mothers) are talking about. But when Prince came on, oy vey! The crowd, including Aunt Norma, went wild. Mom did the Jitterbug. My brother did the funky robot, and Grandmom Ida slipped on some icing and nearly broke a hip. The point is, when the DJ spun Prince, the whole tribe hit the dance floor and partied like it was 1999 (in a basement). Prince’s music helped craft the memory, among others, which I recall every time that song plays on the radio. This Music Issue of PacificSD is dedicated to the music and memories of Prince, a rock star in every sense of the word. Rest in peace, sweet Prince. You brought the world diamonds and pearls… and left it way too early. Sincerely,

POP, ROCK AND OTHER STARS PUMP UP THE VOLUME IN CHULA VISTA BY C AT L I N D O R S E T In the nearly 20 years since Sleep Train Amphitheatre’s inception (the venue formerly known as Coors Amphitheatre and Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre opened in 1998), the Live Nation-ownedand-operated outdoor arena with a seating capacity of 20,000 has hosted some of the biggest names in music. In recent years, the likes of KISS (2012), One Direction (2013), Blake Shelton (2014) and Nicki Minaj (2015) have graced the Chula Vista stage. When it launched in 1880, the San Diego County Fair was more of a touring farmer’s market. Today, the familyfriendly festival, which has called Del Mar home since 1936 and has occurred annually since 1946, entertains an average of 60,000 visitors per day for four weeks each summer. In 2015, more than 1.5 million merrymakers made their way to where the turf meets the surf, marking the second-highest attendance in the fair’s history; 2012 holds the record with 1,517,508 visitors. While fried foods, carnival rides and livestock are enough to draw throngs of people to the fairgrounds each year, it’s the nightly live performances by music-biz giants and up-and-comers that really make the crowds go wild. “W
hen you study English Lit in college, the restaurant business is an obvious career segue,” says the company’s founder, J. Dean Loring, who opened Stars Hamburgers in Northern California in 1988. “I have a pathological desire to please people, and that’s a natural prerequisite for the hospitality industry.” Loring opened the first Burger Lounge in downtown La Jolla in 2007. “It was a little French place owned by some Egyptian guys,” he says. “We bought their lease for $100,000, and built out the restaurant. It does about $1.9 million per year, pretty successful for the location.” Today, the popular chain, which is operated from a cool office in Little Italy, has unfussy, minimalistic San Diego locations in Carlsbad, Coronado, Del Mar, Del Sur (coming soon), Gaslamp, Hillcrest, Kensington, La Jolla and Little Italy. oring says two principles drive the brand. “One is to do a common thing uncommonly well,” he says. “[The second is] to offer simplicity to people living complicated lives.” Supported by house-baked buns and freshly cut fries and onion rings, grass-fed beef takes centerstage on the Burger Lounge menu. Other burger innovations include patties made with free-range turkey and “lots of fresh basil,” and an organic quinoa and vegetables version – available with organic cheese, of course. Loring’s success, it seems, stems from his having an eye and taste for simplicity. Plus, the guy never gives up. “I’m an S.O.B. – a son of a butcher,” he says. “And, on my maternal side, I’m a G.S.O.B., a grandson of a butcher.” Given the rate by which his family of restaurants has been expanding, it’s a safe bet Loring already has another bun in the oven. burgerlounge.com

he company goes by a silly name, but beer is serious business at Belching Beaver Brewery. What started in North County as a small, industrial-park brewery three years ago has grown into a four-part empire with a North Park tasting room, large Oceanside production brewery and a new brewery-equipped restaurant in Vista’s downtown village area. Yes, Ward, the Beav’ sure is growing up fast, so we took a second to catch up with one of the guys behind this rapid expansion and well-diversified venue portfolio.
What will the brewing load be like at the new spots in Oceanside and Vista Village?
PAUL BODY
PacificSD: What led you to believe it was time to expand in such a big way? TOM VOGEL: We did expect to open a new facility when our original location became way too small for production. Some early planning went our way, allowing us the needed funds for the expansion. But, in reality, if you look at [other local brewing companies like] Modern Times Beer and Saint Archer Brewery, they both started much larger than we are, so we are just catching up. We are still just a little company trying to make our way, working hard, making great beer and always trying to make it better.
Our core brands will be produced at Oceanside. We will finally launch six-packs of 12-ounce bottles of our mainstays: Peanut Butter Milk Stout, Hop Highway IPA and Me So Honey, followed by Great Lei IPA, Dammed Double IPA and a nitro milk stout. At the Vista brewpub, we’ll have a
pale ale, Helles lager, malt liquor IPA and others — basically, whatever our brewer, Thomas Peters, wants to come up with. It’s his deal. Opening a restaurant is a departure for you. How has it turned out? We have two patios, one in the front CONT. ON PAGE 102

We did the same setup at our original location and we absolutely love it. There’s also a 30-foot fireplace, a 17-foot-by-17-foot walk-in vault — the building used to be a bank — that will become a temperaturecontrolled wine and barrelaged beer tasting room. There’s a 40-foot bar with 70 unique taps inside, as well as a separate bar outside, wine on-tap and the contents of all our taps displayed on 11 TV screens. Do you think Vista Village, which has three breweries in a single block, is oversaturated? Not at all. If you look at our [original brewery] in Vista, new breweries came in right after us — Indian Joe, Booze Brothers, Barrel Harbor — yet we just get busier. In North Park, some really great breweries came in after us, too — Rip Current, Fall, Modern Times — and we keep getting busier. Also, Belching Beaver Tavern and Grill is unique for downtown Vista. We are a different animal… craft beer, wine, drinks and dining. During [the restaurant’s] buildout, we have been hanging out at Mother Earth Brew Co. and Wavelength Brewing. [Wavelength owner] Hans Haas is also helping us with some buildout items. I think we came in at just the right time, and I believe more breweries are coming. A Boston native with a deep passion for music, Jake Gomes is this Music Issue’s official Bartender of the Month. He moved to San Diego two years ago and has since been pouring drinks and overseeing the rockin’ scene at downtown’s casual live music joint, Tin Roof. In short, dude’s in-tune with his job. PacificSD: What’s your musical history? JAKE GOMES: I’ve been in multiple bands before. I began screaming in post hardcore bands, then began singing. Then I picked up bass and keys, but I’m not in a band currently. What’s your favorite genre of music? My favorite genre is post hardcore or any emotionally

I would kill to see Pierce The Veil at Tin Roof. Favorite three albums of all time? Plagues by The Devil Wears Prada; Rise or Die Trying by Four Year Strong; 21 by Adele.

Have you always wanted to be a bartender? My career path went from bounty hunter to physical therapist to public health professional before I ended up in the hospitality industry. How do you spend your time when you’re not working? I’m an avid hiker, I work out quite a bit and I practice singing and keys. Got any hidden talents? I can spit gum really far in the air and catch it back in my mouth.
Weird, I know. Who’s your celebrity crush? Oprah’s pretty dope. What’s something about you that surprises people? I played rugby for two years in college. hat happens when a house music DJ/ producer and a Christian-music hip-hopper sing karaoke together? Stay tuned for the answer as DJ Lanna B (lannabmusic. com) and emcee Graham Saber (grahamsaber.com) continue their rockin’ blind date, which began half an hour ago in the Epic Limo that’s about to drop them off for a sunset toast in Ocean Beach. Before they arrive, let’s review the pre-date interviews. PacificSD: Where are you from and where do you live now? LANNA: From Chicago. Live in downtown San Diego now. GRAHAM: I was born in Atlanta; super brief stay there. Lived in Albuquerque for a while. One year in Chicago, then
my family moved to North County San Diego in eighth grade, which is where I currently live. What do you do for a living? LANNA: DJ and music producer. GRAHAM: I am a musician or, I suppose, an artist — so I produce and write songs and have gotten a lot of cool opportunities to perform them all over the country. My music can be found under my real name, Graham Saber. Check it out! I also work for our family business — helping to manage and train associates in our Panera Bread Bakery-Cafes. The latter is a bit more stable. What do you do for fun? LANNA: Make people dance. GRAHAM: Well, I make music;
that’s fun. I played water polo in college, so now I go back and play for fun. I also like to play different sports and work out. Also, just cruising around Encinitas, going to the beach and spending time

fter the mid-date break, Lanna and Graham share dessert at O.B. Warehouse before returning to the limo for the ride to The Lamplighter. Once inside the famed Mission Hills karaoke bar, they grab a booth, and Lanna has a beer. A few songs later, the daters groove on the dance floor for a moment, but neither makes a move for the microphone. Seeing that the couple won’t be making sweet music together, at least not of the karaoke variety, the magazine crew finally leaves them alone to enjoy the rest of their evening away from the camera. The next morning, we call to see what we missed. PacificSD: Describe the experience in the limo.
LANNA: Really fun. I’m a DJ, and he is a rapper — we had an auxiliary cord, we were set. And the booze was a nice touch. GRAHAM: The limo was cool; it was cool to be driven around my neighborhood in a limo. The water was cold and refreshing. How was The Lamplighter? LANNA: Was very cool and super casual, which was a nice change, since I’m used to spending my nights in pretty high-energy venues. GRAHAM: Cool place for people that would be into a cool karaoke bar. The laser lights on the dance floor made for a good vibe. What did you do there? LANNA: I drank Corona and listened to some ’90s R&B karaoke.
GRAHAM: Sat in a booth, listened to a singer or two, danced for a second, jokingly, and then we left. Why didn’t you sing karaoke? LANNA: The karaoke regulars were on fire. I never stop another performer when they are in their groove. GRAHAM: Because I’ve never done karaoke. I think the assumption is, “Oh, a musician would be into it, because it’s music and fun.” But, in reality, that’s like what we actually do, so it just seems uncomfortable to participate or steal the mic from people who are there to get their love for music on and don’t normally get to. Why didn’t your date sing? LANNA: See above.
GRAHAM: Same reason. She’s actually kind of shy, I think, and was really not into the idea of it. We were probably more nervous to karaoke than we would be for our own shows/performances. Where did you go and what did you do for the rest of the evening after The Lamplighter? LANNA: We continued our disco in the limo, of course. GRAHAM: We drove around for a little bit and listened to some of her mixes and some of my songs on my album I just began to release.
