In 2005, I leased a 2005 BMW 5 Series, which seemed like a great idea at the time. Five grand down and 36 payments of $581 later, I purchased the car at lease-end for $28,000. Another 60 monthly payments after that, I had spent exactly two craploads of money on the damn thing. Calculating how much cash I would have saved by driving a Prius instead never entered my mind – until my wife got pregnant. My financial advisor said I’d need to save $1,000 per month from conception if I wanted to send my son-to-be to an Ivy League school, which meant I was going car shopping … and my kid could go to community college. Reflecting further, I elected to keep the car. Sometimes – seeing as how I don’t have a backup camera or LED headlights and can’t stream Pandora through the radio – I long for a new ride. Other times, I feel smart for not having had car payments for the past four years. A couple of weeks ago, something popped up on my dashboard, and, this time, it wasn’t the “check engine” light. It was a binary mother lode on my odometer, an unlikely string of 1s and 0s (the “111.1” to the right side of the display indicates the tripometer), proving that I’ve been up and down Interstates 5 and 15 in the same car for a decade. I played the lottery the day I took that photo, but I didn’t win. So, I’ve come to another crossroad: Buy? Lease? Fill the wiper fluid and keep on driving? Having recently pre-sold nearly 200,000 of its Model 3s, Tesla Motors appears to riding along brilliantly. “That car is so damn smart,” says comedian Jo Koy, who performs Oct. 29 in San Diego at Humphreys Concerts by the Bay. “I can wake up in the morning, press ‘Summon,’ and the car will start, open the garage door and back itself out.” Tesla’s AutoPilot system tracks other cars, road signs and conditions. AutoPark takes over parallel-parking tasks. These cars are constantly being revised, adding new bits of high-tech wizardry, and they can be recharged, at no charge, at Tesla stations across the country. To say Tesla has been sparking interest (which they do sans sparkplugs) would be an understatement. Meet some folks who are plugged into the latest automotive trend.

JO KOY Resides: Los Angeles Company: Self-employed Position: Stand-up comedian PacificSD: What are you driving these days? JO KOY: I’m one of those guys who every year had to have a new car. The G-Wagen from Mercedes, the Mercedes S550 before that. But the minute the Tesla came out, and I saw it on the road, I had to have that. Which one? The S was my first one, two years ago. The X, I just got that about three months ago, and my life really improved. How so? There’s no gas. And it’s just a smarter car. It’s a faster car; it’s the fastest car on the road. It’s bigger, it’s got six seats and it’s the best looking car I’ve ever seen. And it has AutoPilot. My favorite feature, especially when you live in L.A. with the bumper-to-bumper traffic. It’s basically like a chauffeur. I love it. Still, that must freak out some folks. The craziest comment I get is that the car will crash, or whatever. The only person who will crash the car is the person behind the wheel. You still have to pay attention; you still have to steer. Even when you take your hands off the wheel, you get a message: put your hands back on the wheel. You never take your hands off the wheel? AutoPilot is best on the open road. When you’re on the open highway, it’s like catching a train to Vegas – and I’m sitting there eating a taco.

Sounds like you’re anxious to get your car. I am looking forward to driving on sunshine and reducing my carbon footprint. I will charge at Sullivan Solar Power, where we have solar on our building and an EV charging station provided by the company, so I won’t be consuming dirty fossil fuels to power my car.

Tesla cars interest me because they are all electric with great range, plus they look sharp and drive very smoothly. Which model are you buying? For my birthday, my boyfriend put down a deposit for me for the Model 3. PacificSD: What interested you in this car? MICHAEL KOH: I’ve never been a big car guy but I’m a huge technology lover, so that’s what got me into it – I love the technology of the car. Also, I bought my first one in 2013, when gas prices were high. What was it like being an early adopter? You are kind of a guinea pig, a beta tester in some ways. In three years, I had to take it in 10 times. Once, I had to get the drivetrain replaced. Sounds frustrating. This is the future. It’s this new amazing technology – and without early adopters like us willing to put up with this stuff, it would probably never get off the ground. What’s so amazing about this car? There are no gears at all; it’s instant acceleration. You would think, because it’s green, it would be kind of wimpy. You don’t think of the power, but when I got my car, it was faster than a Porsche. What’s your range? On a full charge, about 260 miles. I can almost go to L.A. and back. If I need to recharge, I have Google Maps right there on the screen, and it tells where all the Tesla chargers are – and I can charge there free.

If I have a history of leaving at 6:30 in the morning, at 6:29 the garage door opens, and the car backs itself

out 15 feet into my driveway. I get in and take off and, as I am leaving, it closes the garage boor. How smart is this car? My car has a 30-foot sonar bubble which is always sending out updates, so it steers me around problems. The car reads the traffic reports and knows when I need to go in another direction. It knows when there are potholes on the street and alerts me to that. The X starts at about $81,000. That’s a lot of money. I took a test drive in April and then I hemmed and hawed. I had never bought anything like this in my life. Any regrets? I got this car the first week of July and couldn’t be happier. It’s the coolest thing.

They call the X an SUV, but it’s really more like a sports car. Your favorite road trip now? With the acceleration on the Tesla, it’s fun to drive around town. We live in Valley Center, so you have all these curvy roads. And I like the back way to Palm Springs. About that acceleration ... You’ll hear owners talking about that. When you have 100-percent torque and zero rpms and you don’t have any gears, the acceleration actually makes you light-headed.

After operating for many years in Point Loma, Du-par’s relocated to the Gaslamp in August. The small chain of restaurants, with locations in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, has been serving breakfast (and more) 24/7 since its first location opened at the L.A. Farmers market in 1938. Du-par’s is famous for its secret-recipe buttermilk hotcakes, which Esquire magazine once ranked as the best pancakes in the U.S. The batter, according to Du-par’s chefs, takes hours to prepare. While it’s not San Diego’s oldest restaurant, Rudford’s restaurant certainly is a retro time capsule. The chromepaneled eatery opened in 1949 and was further frozen in time when President John F. Kennedy rolled past its front doors in a parade, just a few months before his death in 1963 (a photographic mural of the event is painted on an outside wall). Since Day One, the 24-hour eatery has been serving breakfast dishes at all hours. Diners swear by Rudford’s fresh-baked biscuits and gravy, its just-right grits and its super-size Texas omelet. The latest concept by San Diego restaurateur Johan Engman, Breakfast Republic combines traditional breakfast food with beer. Beer in the morning — it’s a concept that seems to be working. The founder of the Fig Tree Café chain has opened two Breakfast Republics in the past year (in North Park and Liberty Station) and he’s got three more on tap: Encinitas on Nov. 1, East Village in February and Carmel Valley next spring. The menu mixes traditional breakfast fare with adventurous dishes like Breakfast Bone Marrow (bone marrow topped with chorizo and quail eggs), Vietnamese chicken wing breakfast bowl and S’mores French toast. Only the Liberty Station location offers dinner hours. You & Yours Flagship gin 1 oz. fresh lime juice 1 oz. mint honey simple syrup* *For mint honey syrup: Stir 1/4-cup honey and 1/4-cup water over medium heat until honey is dissolved. Remove from heat and add a large handful of fresh mint; let steep for one hour. Strain and keep in a sealed container in the fridge for up to one month. rban living and craft cocktails go together like gin and tonic, but, for some reason — blame our Puritan forebears — most American cities don’t make it easy to set up a boozemaking operation downtown. (That’s why so many local breweries are exiled to the industrial parks of Mira Mesa.) Some cities are relaxing those restrictive zoning rules, as Laura Johnson was thrilled to discover when she started looking for a place to open her urban distillery, You & Yours. “My vision is so tied to getting people through the door, the foot traffic, the built-in regulars,” says the Texas native and recent University of San Diego grad. After much research, Johnson is set to open for business in late October in a 2,300-square-foot space in East Village. Johnson’s focus, in the beginning, will be vodka and gin, which she’ll make using a hybrid still of her own design. “The best way to keep this venture authentic is to make what I like to drink,” says Johnson, who prefers a gin gimlet. “Vodka is the black sheep of the craftcocktail world, but everybody knows someone who’s a vodka lover. Plus, you’ve got to make vodka if you want to make gin – gin is the original flavored vodka.” You & Yours will offer vodka and gin tastings as well as mini-cocktails. (California law limits on-site consumption to six quarter-ounce pours per customer per day.) Visitors will also be able to tour the distillery, for a fee, and pick up a bottle to take home. “The opportunity to be in an area where we could be one of the pioneers was really exciting,” says Johnson of the distillery’s digs in East Village’s Makers Quarter. Though she toyed with the idea of opening her business back in Dallas, San Diego’s creative community won her over, and she hopes to contribute to the ecosystem by locally sourcing fruits and herbs for her gin … with a few exceptions.

“Italian juniper has way better flavor” than its California cousin, she says. “There’s certain aspects of the spirit I’m not willing to compromise on.” Still, she thinks patrons will be able to taste the California in her San Diego gins. “It’s not your typical dusty London dry,” she says. “It’s super bright and juicy and fresh, and that stems from living in California and wanting something refreshing and modern.” Johnson says her team deliberated a long time before settling on the distillery’s name. “We’re all about bringing people together, getting back to that human, face-to-face connection, sharing an experience with people that you love,” she says. “We’re made by you and yours, for you and yours.” You & Yours Distilling Co. opens in late October in the Form 15 building at 1495 G St., East Village.

reat Odin’s Raven! (That’s an Anchorman reference.) A new brewery just touched down in the nether-region between Mira Mesa (aka Beera Mesa) and Miramar (aka Beeramar), and, thanks to a motif based on ancient Nordic warriors, it’s unlike any other in San Diego. Longship Brewery’s on-shore captain, Dan Jachimowicz, toots the brewery’s horns in more ways than one. Brandon Hernández: Where did the whole Viking theme come from? DAN JACHIMOWICZ: I really have no idea. I think the fascination in medieval

history started from fantasy books and games and slowly evolved into an actual historical interest. About the time I started brewing, I also took up metalworking. The guy whose shop I started going to introduced me to some of his friends that do medieval fighting re-enactment, some of whom dress up and fight as Vikings. I started learning more, and my interest in medieval history started shifting toward that culture. I also love to learn about different mythologies, and I consider the Norse myths particularly unique. What are some of the Viking touches at Longship? When you walk in, there’s a painting that was done by an artist named Robin Golden, who also painted the logo and wall where are taps are

LONGSHIP BREWERY IN SORRENTO VALLEY located. We had wanted to put a large, bold art piece there. It’s a realistic portrayal of our logo, featuring the longship with a stunning background. And we have shields dotting the wall. The wood for those came from the crates my kettle and hot-water tank came in. The brass edging was made at the metal shop I worked in. We had to use a specially made hammer-die to get the right width and curve for the shields; a lot of work went into making them. One tank mounted in front of the fermentation tanks features the phrase, “Let the work speak for the craftsman,” in rune characters. That one is particularly special to me as is our approach to how we make our beers. We can talk all we want, but if our craft is not quality, then what is the point?

Describe the beer. We focus on making beer that’s drinkable and smooth. Beer should be savored and enjoyed; it should keep you entertained and guessing throughout the pint. I think we excel in this where others fall short. We will soon be launching a line called Kvasir’s Gift. Kvasir was the Norse god of inspiration, and his gifts to us are the ideas for our experimental brews, whatever they may be. If Minnesota comes to town, who will you pull for, Vikings or Chargers? Well, one of the major military downfalls of the Vikings was the enemy’s use of cavalry. The charger, being a warhorse, would have been responsible for breaking apart quite a few Viking shield-walls, so I would have to give the win to them. CONT. ON PAGE 90

Lewis orn in Alaska and raised in Orange County, Bartender of the Month Jeremiah Zimmerman settled in San Diego more than a decade ago and has called North Park home ever since. If his face looks familiar,

it may be because he plays keyboards and guitar for The Silent Comedy, the San Diegobased rock and folk group he founded with his brother Joshua. Several of the band’s songs have appeared on TV shows and in commercials, and the group has toured internationally and opened for Dave Matthews Band (in 2011 and 2012).

While his band is working on a new album, Zimmerman also stays busy as chief bartender and booze manager at Mission Hills’ new Blonde Bar, which takes its name from Blondie, the ’70s rock band fronted by Debbie Harry. Taking a break from his work at this cocktail-bar/livemusic joint (which has taken up residence at the former site

of the beloved Bar Dynamite), the music man talks about what makes him tick. PacificSD: How are things going so far at Blonde Bar? JEREMIAH ZIMMERMAN: It’s been really good. We opened a couple weeks ago, and so far the entertainment lineup has worked really well.

How would you describe the place? I’ve been telling people it’s a music fan’s take on a dive bar. Everybody that’s involved has either been in bands a lot or has been DJing and curating events a lot. We all come from music and we all want a place to go where we can hear great music that isn’t only stuff we love, but also that we haven’t heard before. We started talking about it in those terms before we even talked about the booze or the drinks. That’s sort of the different angle we’re taking. It’s not a straightup music venue like the Casbah, or just a dive bar like Live Wire. It’s in-between. We want to play vinyl during happy hour and have music be the center of the whole thing. Music that will just be refreshing, where it’s not the same sort of thing you hear everywhere on the weekends. It’s not the same Top-40 playlist, but kind of an eclectic mix reflecting the tastes that we all have. What’s on the menu? Beer and cocktails. We have a cocktail menu that I put together, and I wanted it to run the gamut from more spiritforward [stuff ] that’s a little strong and intimidating, all the way down to the summery and refreshing options that are easy to drink. We tried to make the cocktail menu still have enough complexity to be interesting to people who are into cocktails, but we wanted to do it where any bartender could walk in and make the same consistent drink. So, how are the drinks made? Rather than spending 10 minutes on a drink, we batch the cocktails ahead of time. It just makes it more dive-y. You’re not necessarily going to watch 30 things go into a tin and be shaken up. You’re just going to get that quick pour the same way you do with a Jack & Coke, but you still have all that complexity of a drink. So, it’s like a dive bar’s take on cocktails, basically.

What drinks do you recommend? I’m on a big tequila kick right now. So one of my favorites is this tequila cocktail, Life on Mars. It’s tequila, mezcal and green chartreuse stirred with ice and strained into a glass and garnished with a lemon. There’s a little bit of citrus in it, because I like to peel the lemon over the glass and add a little bit more citrus oil than I normally do. And then you’ve got the smokiness of the mezcal and that sweet, herbally chartreuse flavor. That’s one of the more spiritforward drinks we offer. It’s kind of all booze. I also love this drink that’s a take on an Italian cocktail. It’s Amaro Averna mixed with lemon juice and vodka. We’re going to do a gin variation on it as well, and it’s named after one of the most hard-working musicians in town, Daniel Crawford, who’s in Blackout Party and does a lot of producing for people. He and I were drinking those one night. It was just the Averna and lemon, and I was like, ‘I’m going to build a cocktail around this. This is just delicious.’ It’s actually really, really popular. It’s weird to have an Italian amaro be something that people are like clamoring to drink. So that’s kind of unique. And one of the more novelty drinks on the menu is call the Gold Fashioned. There’s nothing special about the ingredients, really. It’s just your standard bitters and whiskey and orange peel, but we take the sugar cube that dissolves in the bottom of the glass and use the bakers’ gold dust used in cake decorating. When you blend up the sugar and the gold, it floats all through the drink. And if you shine a light on it, it reflects off all these gold crystals throughout the whole thing. That was kind of a gimmicky thing that I just wanted to do because it looks cool, and people get a kick out of it. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it is kind of entertaining.

What’s your band up to? We just finished recording a new record. We did a six-week European tour at the beginning of this year, and then we got a couple of one-off shows in the States since then, around the West Coast and on the East Coast. ZIMMERMAN’S ZOOMS First car: The first car I bought myself was a ’69 Volkswagen Squareback. It was the slowest car I’ve ever had, but it was just so much fun. It ran for exactly six months, then the engine exploded. It was the most heartbreaking thing in the world. Current ride: I drive a 15-passenger, white Ford van. That’s my main

mode of transportation, but I also have an old ’74 Honda motorcycle that I’ve been trying to get back working again because I miss it. It’s also much easier to park than the van. Dream car: I’ve always kind of wanted to get a VW bus. That was what I learned to drive on back in Huntington Beach.

backstage to meet the bands – Naughty by Nature, All 4 One and Coolio. (En Vogue will also perform but didn’t participate in the meet ’n’ greet). As the lights go down, the daters find themselves in gangsta’s paradise (to quote a Coolio song). They dance to hit after ’90s hit (including All 4 One’s “I Swear,” and Naughty by Nature’s “O.P.P.”), getting on-stage props from the performers they met earlier. The place is bumpin’. After the concert, the couple heads to Game Day Sports Bar for a quick break. Before trying their luck at blackjack, they’re split for mid-date debriefings. PacificSD: How’s it going so far? JOLIE: This date is ridiculously fun. Trey and I had an instant

connection, and I’m really loving getting to know him in this notso-conventional way. TREY: Quite well, thanks. What were your first impressions? JOLIE: My first impression of Trey was, “OMG, he’s way hot!” My heart was happy. Tall, hipster, beautiful smile – yes, please. TREY: I was kinda blown away by her looks. She held herself well. Is this the type of person you’d normally date? JOLIE: He’s not normally the [type of ] person I date. I’m typically attracted to older guys, at least 10 years on me, solely because of maturity, but Trey is surprisingly mature for his age. TREY: Absolutely. She has both the looks and the brains.

What do you think about the way she dressed? JOLIE: I loved the way he was dressed. Sexy hipster. TREY: She was stunning. What do you think of Sycuan? JOLIE: Sycuan Casino is awesome. I really love the venue and would love to come back for another concert. TREY: I’ve never been to a casino around San Diego but I’m pretty impressed with Sycuan. Awesome staff, venue and casino. How was Wachena? JOLIE: I’m typically not a casino person, but Sycuan has a fun vibe. TREY: The food was great. The restaurant had a very chilled atmosphere.

How was meeting the bands before the show? JOLIE: Pretty awkward. TREY: Awesome. I felt like I was back in high school, bumping in my car with subwoofers that took up the whole trunk. Describe the atmosphere at the concert? JOLIE: Concert atmosphere was rad, really intimate and comfortable. TREY: I really enjoyed the concert. Even though a ’90s rap concert was in a seated concert hall, everyone was out of their seats getting down. What’s your date’s most attractive quality? JOLIE: His ability to crack me up. I don’t think I’ve stopped laughing since I met him. I find him hilarious. And I loved hearing about the entrepreneurial passion project he’s working on in Mexico – a fellow achiever. TREY: I was pretty attracted to how she was getting down on the concert floor. The girl’s got moves. She was allaround stunning. She also has a great ass. How about a least attractive quality? JOLIE: His leastattractive quality is the fact that he’s so close to my age. TREY: If I want to see her again, I probably shouldn’t answer this question. FINDING FORTUNE IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE

fter the mid-date break, Jolie and Trey head to the card tables, each armed with $100 in gambling money courtesy of Sycuan. As they begin playing blackjack, he gives her pointers, helping her decide when to hit and when to stay. Once they’ve had a chance to place a few bets, the magazine crew finally leaves them alone to enjoy the rest of their evening away from the camera. The next morning, we call to see what we missed. PacificSD: How was blackjack? JOLIE: Blackjack was a blast. Trey was teaching me how to

play, and we were cracking up the whole time. He and I made a deal that we would bet high and, whoever won, we would split it. I tripled my money, and he wouldn’t let me split it with him. TREY: Blackjack was fun, but I lost my ass. I was out in about five minutes, while Jolie doubled her money without knowing how to play the game.

When did you get home? JOLIE: We stayed at the beach for a few hours. It was a surprisingly warm summer night with a mostly full moon, and we did not want to leave. The conversation was flowing so easily, and it felt like we had years of life to catch up on. I got back to my place after 1 a.m. TREY: 12 a.m.? 1 a.m.?

What did you do for the rest of the evening after the magazine crew left? JOLIE: We both were wanting some nature after being indoors in the casino all night, so we had the driver take us to the beach. The chemistry was undeniable, and we did not want the night to end early. TREY: We had the limo driver take us to the beach after the concert. Being inside all night made us want to be in some nice outside setting where we could talk.

Was there a kiss or romantic exchange? JOLIE: There was an incredible romantic vibe. He was holding me so sweetly on the beach. I absolutely loved being in his energy. I felt like I had known him for a long time; it was so comfortable. We are going to explore our chemistry and connection on date Number Two. TREY: We kept it tooootally platonic.

How and when did the date end? JOLIE: After the beach, we took an Uber back to my place, he walked me to the door, and we held each other for a few minutes. Then he took the Uber to his place. TREY: The date ended around 12:30. It was a nice ending where we both sat on the beach and talked about each other’s lives. I got to learn a lot about her and the amazing work she does with helping women quit the jobs they hate and follow their dreams to entrepreneurship. Fill in the blanks. I wish my date had a bigger “blank” and a smaller “blank.” JOLIE: Bigger range of dance moves, smaller concern about what he looked like dancing to En Vogue. second date. We got along great and have a lot in common when it comes to our personal and professional lives.

What’s the funniest thing that happened during the date? JOLIE: Trey was cracking me up the entire night. The funniest thing was sitting in the front row, jamming to “Gangster’s Paradise,” feeling entirely ungangster. It was where we really stopped trying to impress each other and just settled into the hilarity of the moment. TREY: I would have to say when Coolio pointed to Jolie and called her out for being the whitest girl in the venue. That was a good laugh. What was the best part of the date? JOLIE: The best part of our date was our instant connection. I absolutely loved talking about

our businesses together. I think it’s super rad that he’s starting a destination property in Baja, Mexico, to employ the homeless and create sustainable, luxury and communal travel. Forbenefit businesses turn me on. TREY: It’s hard to say; all of it was great. The concert was fun, but I think the best part was being at the beach and talking. It was really the first time that we were alone and able to get to know each other. Will there be a second date? JOLIE: There will absolutely be a second date. He made me feel so honored and adored. Plus, I think we look totally adorable together. TREY: Yeah, there will be a

What’s one thing your date really should know before going on another date? JOLIE: He should know that I am moving to Austin for the fall and have a ton of travel adventure and business expansion plans coming up in 2017, so I am not entirely available as a committed partner. TREY: With someone else? With me? With who? Know about herself? Me? Another dude? No clue. I don’t know what you’re asking. Anything you’d like to add? JOLIE: I was so nervous before the date; I kept having to remind myself to breathe. As soon as we met, all of the nervousness left. I feel so incredibly blessed that Trey came into my life, especially so unconventionally. Maybe we have a story to tell the grandkids?

TREY: Nope. AFTERMATCH: Luckily for last night’s blind daters, their experience lived up to Sycuan’s slogan: Play. Win. Together. In the heart of San Diego. They played. She won. They had a blast together – and were close enough to the city to enjoy a romantic interlude on the beach. Gambling on whether these two would hit it off was a safe bet from the start, one that was confirmed at the mid-date break. She said, “I totally want to kiss Trey right now.” He said, “She was all-around stunning. She also has a great ass.” The house always has the advantage, but Jolie and Trey got free dinner and front-row seats, and then left the casino with cash in their pockets. In this case, despite what may have happened on the beach, the second “P” in O.P.P. wasn’t, as Naughty by Nature sings, “another way to call a cat a kitten” or a “five-letter word rhyming with ‘cleanness’ or ‘meanness.’ ” It was pure “paradise.”
