Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival A
s summer turns to fall, the enchanting Redwood Grove at Old Mill Park in Mill Valley plays host to the annual Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. This popular event, now in its 52nd year, will delight and inspire all who stroll through the park discovering artistic treasures under the trees: sculpture, painting, ceramics, photography, textiles, woodwork, jewelry—over 15 media categories! Heralded as one of California’s most prestigious arts and crafts shows, the festival selects 130 artists from over 500 applicants from all over the globe to showcase their works. A panel of esteemed judges will determine the cash prizewinners from among these juried artists. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival delights all the senses. Talented Bay Area musicians will perform throughout both days on the main stage. As diverse and accomplished as the visual arts at the festival, musical selections include Bluegrass, Latin, Hawaiian, Jazz and more. And what about the little ones? Known as one of the most child-friendly festivals, the Children’s Grove hosts two full days of children’s entertainment and activities. Check out both entertainment schedules on page 6. GO GREEN! Bike or take the free shuttle to the festival this year. We again have our convenient free buses shuttling folks from parking areas around town right to the gates of the fair. Festivalgoers are encouraged to park away from Old Mill Park and take the shuttle buses, which run continuously from 15 clearly marked shuttle stops on Miller Ave. and East Blithedale Ave. Look for the green and white signs. Free parking is available at Tam High; You can also park off the main streets and walk to the nearest stop. This is a fantastic way for locals and visitors alike to get to the festival hasslefree. If you ride your bike, park and lock at Old Mill School playground, courtesy of
Marin County Bicycle Coalition. They are back! Steve Bajor and Tyson Underwood, who joined forces last year as co-directors, have added their invaluable expertise again this year and plan to guide the festival into its next 50 years! These two men bring a combined total of 60-plus years of festival experience and expertise to the table: “It [Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival] is truly unique in every regard,” says Bajor. “The committee, which consists of artists themselves, brings sincere passion for the arts to the forefront, which translates into a top-caliber event that has remained true to its roots.” The nonprofit Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival is unique in that it is a festival produced by artists for artist appreciation. Its 30-member volunteer committee is composed of exhibiting and non-exhibiting members. Funds come from applications and booth fees, poster and T-shirt sales and the admission fee. Any excess funds are used for donations to local art education programs and the improvement of Old Mill Park for the whole community to enjoy.

I’d like to invite and welcome you to the 52nd annual Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival in beautiful historic Old Mill Park.
Now that the show has opened its applications process to artists from all over the globe, you will see work from some of Mill Valley’s favorite returning artists, as well from wonderful artists taking part in the festival for the first time. In addition to the arts and crafts by top craftspeople, we will have a great lineup of entertainment for young and old, so come and spend the day! We’ve refined the park layout this year to improve the lines of sight and capitalize on our unique and beautiful redwood setting. You’ll have the sense of taking a stroll in the woods while taking in the over 125 booths of fine arts and crafts. We definitely have one of the loveliest natural settings for a show. Come explore. The MVFAF silent auction will be marking its third anniversary this year; it will be located in its own booth on the site of the old gravity car, which is currently off-site being restored. The silent auction booth provides something of a show overview with the donated works of many of the participating artists. Your participation in this fun event is highly encouraged. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival has always been a great community event celebrating the history and beauty of Mill Valley. Please come and join us for a festive weekend.

Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival
2008 Posters & T-Shirts This year's chosen image artist is Doug Herr. His unique technique is not the typical approach to plein-air. Herr does an on-site sketch, takes a few photos and then retreats to his studio in Mill Valley where he initiates a “communication” with the canvas and tools. He sees his work as a dialogue between the artist and the medium and says he spends far more time looking at and contemplating his painting than putting brush to canvas. He trusts the painting to tell him what to do and patiently waits to be inspired. The results are stunning. His multi-layered small brush stroke technique gives the painting the right shimmer of light and a beautiful, non-static impressionistic representation of nature. “Afterglow” is the title of his painting chosen by the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival Committee to grace this year’s festival poster. The oil painting is of a familiar ridge-crest view overlooking West Marin with the rolling hills basking in the golden twilight. To Herr this is one of the most beautiful vistas he has contemplated and holds a strong place in his current body of work, Mount Tam Suite, a group of portraits of Marin County’s Mt. Tamalpais and its environs. “I have been fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful locations in the U.S.,” said Doug. “In several decades I have seen the mountain in so many moods—from the most subtle to the most sublime.” For more information about the artist please visit his website: www.douglasherr.com.

Learning Problems Can Actually Be Vision Problems
Dr. Taddei leads a patient in her Vision Therapy exercises
A new school year has just begun. Is your child visually ready to learn? Over 80% of all learning occurs through our visual system. If your child has undiagnosed, untreated problems with his/her visual system, reading and learning can be exercises in frustration. A traditional eye exam tests only one aspect of vision: acuity. A comprehensive visual evaluation tests every aspect of vision and is designed to detect visual problems overlooked by traditional exams.
ĂŠfatigue easily when doing close work? ĂŠĂŠhold his/her book extremely close when reading? ĂŠĂŠcover one eye or hold his/her head at an extreme angle when reading? ĂŠĂŠskip words or sentences or misalign digits in a column of numbers? ĂŠĂŠhave trouble remembering or describing what he/she has just read? These are a few of the symptoms that your child may have a problem with his/her visual system. And that can translate into a problem with reading and learning.
