‘The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree’—Psalm 92:12.

< 19 The not-so-secret-garden fornia since they ask for so little attention or water and our gardens have just survived three years of drought. But I learned that “palms” are milking their 15 minutes of fame these days as well. “We’re a design-focused nursery and palms are a natural for our Mediterranean climate here in the Bay Area. They’re beautiful, versatile and easy to grow,” says Grubb. Palms were introduced by the Spanish and popularized by San Franciscans in the Victorian era. Palm trees are diverse enough to be used in varied planting styles such as bamboo substitutes, hedges, container plants and naturalistic groves as well as the traditional entrance and alley pair. Grubb recommends the blue Moroccan Fan Palm (Chamaerops humilis var. argentea), which can easily match the drought tolerance of a succulent. For architectural drama and durability, she suggests the Chilean Wine Palm (Jubaea chilensis) or the True Date Palm (Phoenix dactylifera ‘Zahidi’). “The lovely Guadalupe Palm (Brahea edulis) naturally grows in its native habitat with many of our own familiar natives, like Monterey Pine (Pinus radiata), Toyon (Heteromeles arbutifolia), pink-flowering currant (Ribes sanguineum) and sword fern (Polystichum munitum),” shares Grubb. When at the nursery don’t miss the unusual and awe-inspiring “vertical succulent garden” on the interior wall. There are a few

vertical succulent gardens on-site that involve professional construction techniques and infrastructure, and are commissioned for a specific space. Now if you’re the crafty type you may want to try the “Woolly Pockets” system, which is created for home gardeners. Try it or buy it as a holiday gift for someone who is artsy and has a green thumb and patience. The directions say all you need are some “basic tools” and “commonsense,” which immediately excludes many of us...No worries. We’ll stick to painting clay pots. What’s the best part of running such a divine nursery? “What’s most challenging right now is juggling all of the projects that I’m so excited about; projects here at the nursery and design projects in the community and for private clients,” says Grubb. “What’s most fun is actually creating gardens and realizing new projects here at the store. And, our Thanksgiving Open House! It’s become a tradition and is now our favorite event of the year.” Bring your friends, family and out-of-town guests to this sanctuary. They’ll thank you for taking them to this Bay Area tropical paradise. Be warned though: Make room for a palm tree in your car in advance. < Visit Annie at www.dirtdiva.com

I

adore my friend Julie’s family. Not just her husband and kids, but her parents and siblings. I love that they’re so normal, so happy, so Gentile—so completely unlike my neurotic Jewish family. Julie’s parents were married 60 years ago and their eldest child arrived shortly after their ďŹ rst anniversary. Five more followed, so for a decade, Patty and Terry always had at least one child in diapers. Money was tight, but they were dedicated to raising a happy, healthy family. Patty once told me all she ever wanted in life was to be a wife and mother. My 5-foottall mother once told me all she ever wanted was to be a ballerina. Patty and Terry’s six children stayed in Marin and San Francisco to lay down their adult roots. They wanted to remain close, especially when they began their own families. Today, one is divorced, while ďŹ ve remain happily married to their ďŹ rst and only spouse. I joined this extended family for dinner a couple of months ago. There were more than 30 people in Terry and Patty’s modest home. A twinge of envy surfaced as I watched the sisters conversing intimately on the patio and the brothers roughhousing in the yard with their children, nieces and nephews. My family is scattered across the country, with my parents on the East Coast, me here and my brother and sister in different cities in between. Even at our best, we’re one strange family unit. Though my folks are together, we aren’t sure if they’re married. They divorced in ’78 and remain split on whether any nuptials reoccurred between them. Mimi insists they’re married, however Dad remains mum on the subject, adamant that it’s none of our business. (Of course it’s not, we’re merely their offspring.) With role models like this, is it any wonder that the three of us made it well into our 40s without getting married or reproducing? Finally, last year, my brother broke the Silverstein curse and married a lovely woman with two children. In June, he adopted 3-year-old Kyle and 5-year-old Carly. I’ve offered my brother a piece of golden advice about child rearing: “Do the exact opposite of what Mom and Dad did.â€? Our sister is in absolute agreement. In my spare time, I read parenting books and write notes in the margins for my bro. “Contrary to what Mom believes, this selfimage chapter states it’s not a good idea to tell your teenage daughter if she loses 10 pounds, you’ll reward her with a nose job for her 16th birthday.â€? Though he hasn’t said anything, I’m sure

my brother is grateful when he receives another book in the mail from me. My thinking is that if it doesn’t come naturally, you can learn it. My niece and nephew will thank me one day. I had the opportunity last week to observe my parents with their new grandchildren. They’re patient, kind and engaged with Kyle and Carly. I do not recognize these people. My father couldn’t stop smiling when one of the little ones climbed on his lap. “Grandpa read story,â€? demanded Kyle. Out came Thomas the Tank Engine for the third time that morning. “Grams, want to play Candyland with me?â€? asked Carly. My mother quickly cleared the kitchen table and set up the board. Who is this woman? I swear I don’t remember playing a board game with my mother. I checked in with my siblings to make sure I wasn’t experiencing early onset Alzheimer’s. They assured me my memory is intact. Our parents, who certainly missed every Parenting 101 class when they were raising us, somehow innately know how to be wonderful grandparents. After seeing my parents in a new light, I’ve been thinking about that dinner at Patty and Terry’s. As I helped Patty with the dishes, I told her I thought she was the perfect mother. “My children will tell you I made more than my share of mistakes,â€? Patty laughed. “Believe me, I’m a much better grandmother.â€? Yesterday, I asked Julie for conďŹ rmation. “Perfect is not quite the word I’d choose,â€? Julie responded. “What did she do wrong?â€? I pressed. “Most everything. She smoked around us all the time. When I was 7, my sister and I were ďŹ ghting in the car. Mom pulled over and left me on the side of the road for a good 10 minutes.â€? We shared crazy mother stories. Surprisingly, Julie had more than me. I called my mom this morning. She chattered about protecting the baby ground owls burrowing in the front yard and the toys she sent to her grandchildren. I heard my dad yell hi in the background. I realize how much we’ve all softened in our old age and how much I miss them. < E-mail: nikki_silverstein@yahoo.com The PaciďŹ c Sun’s previously announced Single in the Suburbs party has been postponed due to a scheduling conict. We’re shooting for another date early in 2010. Stay posted.

Domestic disturbance ‘Maid’ proves one thing—it’s hard to find good help these days... by Renata Polt

I

n just the first few scenes of 30-year-old Chilean director Sebastian Silva’s The Maid, we find out several key facts about the title character, the live-in maid Raquel (Catalina Saavedra): She’s 41 and has served the same upper-crust Chilean family for over 20 years. Her employers, Pilar (Claudia Celedon) and Mundo (Alejandro Goic), treat her with a mixture of affection and condescension. Their four kids, who she thinks adore her, actually behave with a mixture of indifference and dislike. Raquel is cranky, humorless and suffers from headaches and dizzy spells. The maid wakes the kids in the morning, serves breakfast in bed to the parents, cleans the two-story house and cooks the meals. Realizing that the work Alas, praying won’t clean those dishes. ‘Up,’ up and away! Around the time Mr. Fredricksen’s old Victorian house was being dragged along the side of a Hindenburg-era dirigible, I realized that Pixar had turned the controls over to a bunch of card-carrying surrealists. Rack up another screaming hit for the team from Emeryville with UP, a hilarious and wise marriage of graphic sheen to feeling. All the trade show stunners we’ve come to expect from Pixar are there—smoke is smokier, water wetter, weight is weightier (no small challenge for digital animation) and gawd those gorgeous balloons. But this time the golden-age studio puts all in service to the most personal and idiosyncratic of visions. Ed Asner voices Carl Fredricksen, the recently bereaved and curmudgeonly holdout on a city block experiencing urban teardown and build-up. When a tussle with neighboring developers seems to doom his prospects for staying there, he hatches a scheme to realize a childhood dream he shared with his wife—and takes an unwary Explorer Scout along for the ride. Up’s big heart is anchored to the pain of loss: When Carl is finally aloft, it’s not clear he wants to come down again. The plain-wrap message—to recognize the adventures you’ve always had in the everyday—brought a tear to my curmudgeonly eye.—Richard Gould

Roasting Pitta Traditional and modern etiquettists may disagree, but for the all-important fifth anniversary, we think it entirely appropriate to fling comedic insults and gratuitous praise at the host of honor—in this case, Mark Pitta— responsible for spearheading a weekly night of comedy with his friends for the past five years at 142 Throckmorton. Pitta’s Tuesday nights are known ‘Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand’—Mark Twain. to be a mixed bag of stand-up, sit-down, sketches, improv, rehab, music and video—a showcase for up-and-comers and established comics—often with surprise guests, like Dana Carvey, Robin Williams, Richard Lewis, Mort Sahl and many others. THE MARK PITTA ROAST SHOW is also a fundraiser for 142 Throckmorton Theatre. 8pm Nov. 17 at 142 Throckmorton Theatre, Mill Valley. Week of November 12-18, 2009

by Ly nd a R ay ARIES (March 20 - April 19) A powerful New Moon in Scorpio suggests that this is a good time to delve into the mysterious. You are encouraged to believe in and use your psychic powers; muse over the meaning of death and mortality; and/or consider the validity of paranormal activity. By Tuesday you’re ready to move out of the shadows and revert to your adventure-loving self. Cancel the tour of Transylvania castles and book an African photography safari instead. TAURUS (April 20 - May 19) Relationship issues are impossible to avoid this weekend. Since you are not operating from a place of strength, you may as well stop being stubborn and learn to compromise. This is also your opportunity to tackle any part of your life that is unorganized or cluttered. For the next two months, Saturn can help you streamline your daily routines so that everything is in place. No more hunting for the remote—how great is that? GEMINI (May 20 - June 20) Even the most familiar customs should be abandoned when circumstances change. In order to fully experience serendipitous events, one must be spontaneous. Your weekend should focus on dreams for the future and an openness to liberation from the ordinary. Meanwhile, your ruler (negotiating Mercury) moves into the lucky sign of Sagittarius by Monday. Submit a proposal, make a deal or enter a skill contest. You know what they say, “You can’t win, if you don’t play.” CANCER (June 21 - July 21) I know you love to start preparing early for holidays. Those of you making plans for a big Thanksgiving dinner may want to consider the dynamics of the relationships between your significant other and certain family members. A seating chart keeping the more volatile personalities at separate ends of the table is recommended. As for this week, a New Moon in your house of self-expression inspires your inner artist. Start working on that holiday centerpiece. LEO (July 22 - August 22) The good news: your ruler (the Sun) gets an energizing zap from exciting Uranus this weekend. This could bring anything from a love-at-first-sight experience to an unexpected tax refund. The bad news: temperamental Mars in your sign could cause you to overreact—especially when dealing with a difficult family member. My advice? Use your cash windfall to take your new lover to an undisclosed resort in Hawaii for a few days. VIRGO (August 23 - September 21) While irritating Mars in the house ruling the unconscious mind causes the occasional bad dream, your conscious mind is making lots of progress this week. On Monday, the combined effects of a stimulating New Moon and the Leonid meteor showers could motivate you to start an interesting project with serious money potential. You may have to work at it, but the outcome is quite promising. If you want everything to drop in your lap with no effort, come back as a Sagittarian in your next life. LIBRA (September 22 - October 22) Life has an intensity now that can feel a bit heavy at times. Even jovial Jupiter in your house of playfulness cannot compensate for the planetary stress inherent in your chart this week. Before you cancel all your social engagements, consider that flirty Mercury moves into your interaction house on Sunday evening and remains there for the rest of the month. Start accepting those party invites. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) You get major celestial action for your zodiac celebration this weekend when the mushy Moon joins vampy Venus and the playful Sun in your sign. This New Moon is the takeoff point for your most important birthday goal. So, figure out what you want and set it in motion before Monday night. Meanwhile, an authority figure is trying to rain on your parade. Wear your favorite black trench coat and carry a big umbrella. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 20) The planetary pileup in your house of visions can cause your imagination to run wild. You are prone to being out of touch with reality while you are awake. Because of this, you should not operate heavy machinery, play with sharp knives or sit on the edge of a high structure until Tuesday. And even then, you still should avoid the really sharp knives... CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 18) A major power struggle could make this a difficult week. You believe showing up for work is very important as you are in the initial stages of accomplishing your goals. Nevertheless, in order to stay on track, you should remain out of the vicinity of anyone who wants to challenge your career agenda. Telecommuting is definitely something to consider right now. Trust me. AQUARIUS (January 19 - February 17) The weekend Moon emphasizes the mixed messages you’re getting about what you want to do with your life. Try not to make any decisions during this confusing time, since the chances of making the RIGHT choice are slim to none. So, for now, all you have to do is figure out what you’re having for dinner and which bottle of wine you’re going to open. You can handle that, can’t you? PISCES (February 18 - March 19) After years of having the liberating planet Uranus in your sign, you’re finally getting the picture. Change can be good, even when it looks like it is bad. So, for those of you who recently had to move, lost a job, ended a relationship or got kicked out of school, congratulations. You may feel as if your world has been turned upside down, but you’re actually learning to fly. Now you just have to figure out where you want to land when you return to Earth. < E-mail Lynda Ray at cosmicclues@gmail.com or check out her Web site at www.lyndarayastrology.com NOVEMBER 13 – NOVEMBER 19, 2009 PACIFIC SUN 33

Q:

I’m planning to marry my boyfriend in December. I love how he makes me feel like a supermodel even though I’m slightly overweight, and how he’s always saying he loves me. This is in sharp contrast to my mentally abusive ex-husband always saying he never loved me. Recently, my boyfriend asked me to clean out his car, and I found a black bra under the passenger seat. He said, “Baby, I bought that for you, it was supposed to be a surprise.” When asked to produce the tags or receipt, he responds, “Excuse me for trying to do something romantic” or says he’ll show me the rack at the store where he got the bra. Should I really believe he accidentally bought a bra way smaller than my size and lost the tags and receipt? He’s proven to be romantic on several occasions—only several because we only met in March. He swears he’s being honest, but he lies a lot; even his parents tell me they can’t believe much of what he says.—Hopeless Romantic

A:

There are two sides of you talking here: the side dying to believe he’ll show you the rack at the store where he found the bra, and the side that can’t help but know that the rack he got it off belongs to some skinny blonde. Come on...you know as well as we all do, when a guy’s buying his girlfriend lingerie, the salesclerk doesn’t say, “I could wrap this in pink tissue paper, slap on a gold sticker and pop it in a fancy little bag. But, you know how your girlfriend would really like it...under the passenger seat, with a Life Saver stuck to it, next to a crumpled Burger King wrapper.” I know...excuuuuse him for trying to do something romantic. Next on Romeo’s list, “I have a box of chocolates for you—they’ve been in the trunk for a month!” He does have his good qualities, all two of them: He makes you feel like a supermodel—one whose boyfriend cheats on her—and always tells you he loves you. His other character witnesses are less dewy-eyed. While parents of murderers step over the dead bodies in their foyer to defend their kids’ honor, his parents came right out and told you he’s a relentless liar. You later e-mailed me that he yells and swears at them, and even threatened to vandalize their new car if his dad didn’t do what he wanted. Do you actually find anything attractive about him—besides how attractive he makes you feel? You’re clearly trying to make the best of a really bad situation, because for you, being without a man is an even worse situation. This boyfriend isn’t a good guy, just a different kind of bad guy from the last one. Once again, this isn’t going to end well—none of your relationships will until you do the hard work it takes to build up a strong self and standards, and the guts and dignity to stand up for them instead of settling for pretty talk. For a guidebook, pick up Nathaniel Branden’s The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem. You’ll be ready to date again when you find it unbelievable that this guy was ever in a position to ask you to marry him—and even more unbelievable that your answer was “Yes” and not “Why don’t we skip straight to the bitter divorce?”

Q:

My boyfriend is moving across the globe. I love him deeply, but he says he’s battling commitment phobia, doesn’t think I’m “the one,” struggles to say “love” and doesn’t have butterflies in his stomach for me anymore. Instead of breaking up now, he wants to play it by ear after he leaves. I’d do anything for him. I’m so sad he’s struggling to love me back.—Crushed

Welcome to the low-impact breakup: “Nothing comes between you and me, Babe, except maybe the world’s largest body of salt water.” After he moves, you two’ll “play it by ear.” Translation: He’ll gradually stop calling and blame the time difference. Or, he’ll finally tell you it’s over, but only when he can cut short your crying jags with “Whoops! Looks like my phone card’s about to run out.” Sorry for the tough love, but the guy’s told you in numerous ways that there’s nothing left. You can wish things were different, but the kindest thing you can do for yourself is admit the obvious, and stop editing the writing on the wall into something a little less “I’ll soon be in bed with Svetlana!” <

We care about our local community and this holiday season, we’ll be adopting a local family in need so we can help them have a more joyous holiday experience. United Markets will give the family gift certiďŹ cates for groceries and, our employees will donate their time and money to buy gifts for the family. We feel fortunate and want to do what we can to help others in our community. Looking forward to serving you, —Robert Bowden, San Anselmo Manager
