›› LETTERS Another view of Edward Schaefer Edward Schaefer’s ex-wife gave us permission to run her letter on the condition it go with this photo that, she says, ‘shows him smiling, at happier times.’
To whom this may concern: I have read your articles on Eddie [Schaefer] and I am saddened about the fact that all that can be said are nasty things about him. He made a lot of mistakes in his life, yes...but I don’t know anyone who has not done things they were ashamed of. Aside from all the horrible things everyone keeps saying and writing about him, there are many things all you people do/did not know about him. I am the “ex-spouse” that all you journalists keep writing about. I am very angry that I keep getting mentioned and my relationship with him keeps getting brought into this tragic accident and, beyond, horrible murder. Eddie and I had our issues. Some things did happen in our marriage that neither of us were happy about. Many things, all of you keep writing, are beyond stretched and exaggerated and very unfair, some of the things never happened...I am not saying that some of the things did not, but what is being written is not true. I knew Eddie on all levels...his good and
his bad; I did not marry him because he is some sort of a monster like you all claim. What he did was a horrible thing, and there is nothing that can be done to fix it. I can tell you that it was a very bad decision on his part, yes, we all know that. I am so sorry for the pain that he did cause, and no words will ever lessen the pain of his actions, and that is true. Eddie was not a monster, he was a man who suffered more than one illness, and I saw personally in our private moments together how bad he hurt over his lack of control of his alcoholism and his bipolar disease. He hated that and I know it created a lot of depression in his life. All he wanted to do was overcome it and be a good man and an even better father...his actions and involvement in our daughter’s life, school and church and with the community showed the kind of person he fought so hard to be, and lost the battle to become. Eddie and I kept in contact always in regards to our daughter and chose to be friends and care about what happens in each other’s lives and make sure our daughter had the best chance to be the best person she could be. All he ever wanted was for her not to make the mistakes he did, and struggle with the problems he had. Eddie loved kids and was funny and playful and tried so hard to be the good, funny, fun person...the last thing he would have ever wanted was for all of this to happen. He had a very rough shell from all he had been through, and never allowed the public to see his hurt. He knew no one cared and everyone hated him, he did not want to become even more emotionally vulnerable to what was said and what was thought about him. He had a daughter to be strong for, so as to let

Your soapbox is waiting at ›› pacificsun.com this situation affect her as little as possible, which was almost impossible. He was very hurt and sad about what his actions and decisions caused that tragic day and it tortured him inside having to live with what he did—regardless of what he let everyone see and know. My daughter knew of her dad’s faults and illnesses, but I tell you she knew a father who loved her and only wanted her to be happy, who wanted to be a good person, who was always involved in every area of her life. She loves her daddy more than any of you can imagine, this situation has been hurting her for so long and she has had to be so strong in a way no child should have to. I am so very angry that no one can just let it go now...you all got what you wanted, leave it alone, let my child move on. It is hard enough without all the things said, I fear what it is going to do to her inside when she some day reads all the things written, we (her grandmother and aunt and I) are trying so hard to keep it away from her, but it is hard when no one will let it alone. Keep my relationship with my child’s father out of this. I have a family and a life that I love and cherish and do not need all of this brought back into my life. Eddie and I were friends, we have a child together, and that is what I want to protect the most. The former Mrs. Edward Schaefer, Marin
We believe the animal most women would choose is ‘spotted ass’... Although it is a biological imperative for men to be attracted to nubile young women, if older men do so, they are called “dirty old men,” “letches” and even “perverts.” So why do older women going after young men get to be called “cougars”? Couldn’t I be called a “greyhawk” or “stallion”? I’d even settle for “rabbit”.... Carlo V. Gardin, Fairfax
High schools should judge not by skin color, but by nerdiness/jockness I am stunned that people are so vigorously defending their right to be offensive with the Tam High reunion posters showing cartoon “Indians” on a wanted poster [“Heroes and Zeros,” July 23]. They say it’s part of their history and should be celebrated. I strongly disagree. Let’s see what other “fond memories”
of high school we should “celebrate”: ● My high school had such charming features as an exclusive seating area at lunch and reserved space on the football bench Torrance High School in So Cal (instead of the still uses caricatures based on the inhabitants of the Mongo- playing field) for African-Amerilian steppes to strike fear into the hearts of opposing teams. can students. Go Tartars! ● I had classmates whose parents belonged to country clubs that had the “tradition” of barring women or Jews from membership. (I don’t think any African-Americans would have even tried.) ● A fire department near where I lived less than 20 years ago clung to its community history of KKK involvement and only permitted Caucasian men to apply to be a firefighter. The local high school did little or nothing to teach about equality or civil rights. For those of you who think such images as the ones on the high school reunion poster are harmless, think again. Just last month here in Marin, an acquaintance of mine from the rural southeast referred to stereotypes of both Jews and AfricanAmericans in a single sentence and had no idea that what she was saying was offensive to anyone. In her community, those stereotypes were perpetuated and taught as if they were facts, and were not corrected. She was stunned—and apologetic—when I let her know the truth. Do not bury the history of Tam High. Nobody says hide those antiquated mascot or sticker images. But let’s put them in the right context and celebrate that we’ve all grown up well past all of those traditions of prejudice and discrimination. Doug Levy, Corte Madera

›› NEWSGRAMS Judge 86’s Proposition 8... Gay marriage supporters are cutting a little cake today as Proposition 8, the voter approved California ban on same-sex unions, was deemed unconstitutional by U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn Walker. In his ruling on the case officially known as Perry v. Schwarzenegger, the judge said the initiative infringed upon the U.S. constitutional rights of gays and lesbians to marry whom they wanted. “Proposition 8 unconstitutionally burdens the exercise of the fundamental right to marry,” wrote Walker,“and creates an irrational classification on the basis of sexual orientation.” Walker said the defendants in the case failed “to advance any rational basis in singling out gay men and lesbians for denial of a marriage license.” And, taking the issue to a broader context, Walker added that “the evidence shows Proposition 8 does nothing more than enshrine in the California Constitution the notion that opposite-sex couples are superior to same-sex couples.” Prop. 8 passed in November 2008 with 52.3 percent of the vote. In his courtroom defense of the gay-marriage ban this past June, attorney Charles Cooper argued that same-sex marriage would infringe upon the very survival of humankind.“Because the marital relationship is fundamental to the existence and survival of the race,” Cooper said,“without the marital relationship, society would come to an end.” Cooper chose to offer no evidence to the court to support his arguments, but suggested that the judge could pull down any book off his shelf to see that the purpose of marriage has been to responsibly make and rear babies. Despite winning their day in court this time around, same-sex marriage supporters shouldn’t throw all their rice just yet.The case is almost certain to be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, making for a culture-war showdown in the high court that hasn’t been seen since Roe v.Wade.—Jason Walsh Candidate confrontation The date for Dominican University’s highly anticipated California gubernatorial showdown has been set for Oct. 12. And refereeing this sparring match between Democratic candidate Jerry Brown and Republican candidate Meg Whitman will be none other than Tom Brokaw. As to the debate landing a moderator of Brokaw’s stature, university president Joseph Fink said it “reflects the impact that California has on issues facing our country from healthcare to economic recovery.” Brokaw, anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News from 1982-2004 and currently a special correspondent for NBC news, said he decided to participate because “this election comes at a critical time for the citizens of California...the country will be watching to see who will become the next governor.”The celebrated newsman also admits “I am particularly excited about participating in this debate because I began my NBC news career covering California politics in 1966.”—Elizabeth Cermak EPA (heart) MEA The Environmental Protection Agency announced yesterday that Marin Energy Authority now ranks 13th on its Top 20 Local Government list of the largest green power purchasers. This recognition designates MEA as one of the EPA’s formal Green Power Partners, which Gina McCarthy, assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation, says,“Are raising the bar for clean, renewable energy use.”—EC EXTRA! ± Kathleen M. joined a group of kayakers recently for a jaunt from Corte Madera to San Rafael. As they began the return trip, their experienced leader suggested they stay in San Rafael, because high winds had developed. Kathleen and two others decided to forge ahead anyway. By 5pm, with waves hitting her kayak broadside, Kathleen could no longer paddle. One of her companions came back when he saw her in distress. That’s when Jed Keltner and Eric McFarland happened by in a motorboat. They got the kayakers and kayaks aboard and brought them safely ashore. Kathleen calls Jed and Eric “angels.” Ironically, it turns out that the two men work on Angel Island and were returning from a day on the job when they staged their seafaring rescue. Heroes, angels—it’s all the same to us.

Lost in the supermarket If this is aging gracefully, I think I’ll head back to the Haagen-Dazs aisle... by N ik k i Silve r ste in
A
bout five years ago, I wrote a column on aging. The Sun’s former editor Linda Xiques rejected the piece, saying that women older than me would race to the bridge to jump off. I thought she was being melodramatic; however, after my experience at Safeway last night, I get it. Finding your first wrinkle is nothing compared to finding out you’re no longer young. After a delightful hour at the Sausalito Dog Park, I drove to Strawberry Village to pick up the special food for my new diet. I personally developed this weight-loss program and I’m pleased to report that it’s extremely effective, so I’ll share it with you. If, like me, you’re obsessed with devouring Haagen-Dazs chocolate peanut butter ice cream, go to Safeway, avoid the frozen food aisle and get to the yogurt case. Purchase as much Yoplait whipped chocolate mousse yogurt as they have, because they run out sometimes. Ounce for ounce, you’re consuming less than half the calories of the chocolate peanut butter ice cream. Voila, eat two yogurts and you still lose weight. I’m confident that my Haagen-Dazs heft will soon be dripping off my hips. Anyway, back to the story. I stood in the long line at the register with my 10 yogurts. Ahead of me was a young, fresh-faced, pretty woman. She had every man there mesmerized as she showed off her brilliant white smile and chatted about being a TV sports reporter from Sacramento. No one drooled, but in my opinion, most of the men were pretty close to it. Blah, blah, NASCAR. Blah, Giants, blah, playoffs. Whatever. She could have been talking about her new mascara and they would have been just as attentive. I watched her food go by on the conveyor belt. Bag of fresh spinach, tofu, fruit, a jug of plain yogurt, vegetable, cottage cheese, vegetable. I certainly don’t want to eat dinner at her house. She’s lucky she had less than 10 items, or I would have complained just to get the adorable health nut out of my line. I’m not positive about this part and I don’t want to get anyone in trouble, but I think the cashier went slowly when he scanned her stuff. He definitely liked her. Finally, the ordeal was over and we all watched Ms. Mesmerizing, with her long legs and very fit tush, glide gracefully out the door. As I loaded my 10 identical items onto the belt, the man behind me said, “I knew she looked familiar. I used to live in Sacramento.” “Guess you saw her on TV,” I replied. I looked up. He was nice looking, probably just a few years younger than I am. He nodded and smiled. Then he stared at the chocolate yogurts lined up in front of me. “You must really like those,” he remarked. He still smiled, this time looking directly
at me. Cute guy was flirting with me. I smiled back. Why not? I may not be the young sports reporter, but I use professional teeth whitener. “My little cousins are coming over. It’s healthier than ice cream,” I said. I looked in his cart, which contained items surprisingly similar to those purchased by the TV gal. It was a relief to see he also had beer. “No little ones coming to visit you,” I observed. He smiled at me again. I smiled back. We were connecting. “That’s $7,” Check-Out Man said, abruptly ending my intimate moment with the cute guy. Flustered, I grabbed my wallet, fumbling to open it. That’s when the contents, including scads of loose change, spilled to the floor. I squatted down to retrieve my belongings. My new friend helped, handing things to me. I kept thanking him and he kept smiling. Obviously, he found my clumsiness appealing. When he handed back one of my business cards, I said, “That’s me. My card, I mean. You can keep it.” “Thanks.” He had a puzzled look on his face. I looked at him more closely. Jeez, I need an eye exam. He wasn’t a few years younger. More like 15 or so years younger. Oy. I don’t think he was flirting either, probably just being polite. Totally humiliated, I handed the cashier exact change, grabbed my purse and hurried toward the door. “Ma’am,” someone called out. I continued walking. “Ma’am. Um, Mrs. Silverstein.” I turned around. The cute guy walked up to me, holding out my environmentally conscious canvas sack. “You forgot your groceries,” he said. “Thank you.” I slunk out the door and got into my car. Pulling the rearview mirror toward me, I stared. My former boss was right. But, it’s not just looking older that makes you think about driving to the bridge, it’s realizing you are older. Inside, I’m still 25, perky and attractive to all the men in the checkout line. In reality, I’m a middle-aged woman hitting on a guy who’s as young as I feel. I went home and called Kate to commiserate. She explained that the fluorescent lights in Safeway are very unflattering. We decided to meet for a glass of wine, so I changed my clothes, applied makeup and scrutinized myself in the mirror. I dimmed the lights and took a few steps back. Ah. Much better. ✹ Email: nikki_silverstein@yahoo.com

COOKED IS THE NEW RAW Change is a constant on the food scene. The Tavern at Lark Creek has a team of two new chefs, Clint Davis and Aaron Wright. Davis, a New Zealander, cooked his way through Europe to California to join Daniel Humm at Campton Place in San Francisco, later working at One Market and in Japan before landing at Lark Creek as sous chef. Wright began his career in Seattle, ultimately becoming chef at Canlis, the landmark restaurant. The duo is currently causing some seasonal ripples: opening of the creekside patio and tables in the redwood grove for alfresco dining, a $29.95 three-course prix ďŹ xe dinner selected from the new menu, special summer brunch items (Bing cherry pancakes, brandy custard French toast with berries), and the August Heirloom Tomato Festival using freshest produce in imaginative ways. Reservations: 415/924-7766... Cafe Gratitude, the organic raw food mecca in San Rafael, takes inspiration from the Gratitude chain’s Gracias Madre Restaurant in San Francisco, expanding its menu to include cooked Mexican foods “to appeal to and feed a larger community,â€? according to General Manager Ryland Engelhart. Also notable is the “I Am Grateful Bowl,â€? a choice of grains with black beans and greens served on a choose-your-own-price basis (no one is refused). www.cafegratitude.com...Fans of the old Cantina in Mill Valley are happy to hear that its former owners are restoring its familiar atmosphere, after a downward spiral, as Maria Maria, a Carlos Santana venture. Jose Luis Barbara, Cantina’s original chef, will be in the kitchen for the reopening tentatively scheduled for next month after some sprucing up. FINE WINE DOWN Every town needs comfy spots like the Koffee Klatch in Fairfax, a friendly drop-in place. It has, since 1964, been a haven for families, famous for its breakfasts. Alas, it has gone the way of many small businesses these days, and co-owner Irlando Reyes was forced to close the doors last month...Also missed: Ross Valley Winery in San Anselmo. For 23 years Paul Kreider created honest wines from regional grapes, starting in his own garage. For the last nine years he operated his downtown tasting room/bottle shop with a working winery in the back of the building. His valiant attempts at frugal production (Lug-a-Jugâ€”ďŹ ll-your-own bottle, and Recession Red for 0.1 percent of the Dow Jones daily) weren’t enough to save the operation.
The raw and the cooked, at CafĂŠ Gratitude.
EVENTS AND EXPERIENCES Learn cool tips, taste cool sweets when Neil Gottlieb of Three Twins Organic Ice Cream appears at Tyler Florence Mill Valley Aug. 7, 1-3pm. He will introduce Big Papa’s Banana Pudding avor based on Florence’s father’s dessert recipe, a signature item at Wayfare Tavern in San Francisco. Reservations: 415/380-9200 or rsvp@ tylerorence.com...Cavallo Point Lodge at Ft. Baker will be the setting for a ďŹ lm and food experience Aug. 14 (1-4pm) when the Sausalito Film Festival presents the premiere of Terra Madre, a documentary on the Slow Food Movement, introduced by Alice Waters. Afterward the Cooking School at Cavallo Point will host an exclusive tasting of organic foods. Tickets ($10-$25) are available online at www. sausalitoďŹ lmfestival.com...“Top chefs! Dozens of wineries!â€? Familiar comeons? The annual Sonoma Wine Country Weekend over Labor Day is the real deal. Taste of Sonoma with 150 wineries and 60 chefs is a spectacular day of outdoor indulgence, chef demos, chef competitions and seminars (McMurray Ranch in Healdsburg), the best possible way to experience summer food and wines. Also: intimate lunches and dinners at numerous wineries, special dinners centered on varietals, and the zany ďŹ nale, Sonoma Valley Harvest Wine Auction (at Cline Cellars). Reserve now! Details: www.sonomawinecountryweekend.com. MOO-VING ON UP Following a trend, another Marin food business is expanding to Petaluma. Bovine Bakery of Pt. Reyes Station plans to open a second venue on Kentucky St., right downtown. Cowgirl Creamery and Straus Family Creamery both found more room for less money there, as did Avatar’s Punjabi Burrito, taking Aram’s spot in the River City for northern exposure. ✚ Contact Pat at patfusco@sonic.net.

Hot August nights From LocalMusicVibe to Murphy to Rancho to the Woods, the summer’s just heating up... by The Space Cowb oy
I
f you’ve got a hankering for some good live music this month, look no further. August is full of great shows in and around the North Bay. But first, congratulations to the Pacific Sun and LocalMusicVibe for banding together their shared Marin musicscene know-how to further highlight the fantastic live events taking place in the North Bay—the bolstered online content at pacificsun.com and localmusicvibe. com gives county music fans a platinum double-album of info and events. And speaking of great events, the good folks at Murphy Productions continue to put on fantastic shows at the Palm Ballroom of the Seafood Peddler in San Rafael. This month they will host current rulers of the local jamgrass scene Hot Buttered Rum on Aug. 21. Reggae legends The Itals will be at the Peddler Aug. 26, and ex-Bob Weir bandmate Mark Karan and Jemimah Puddleduck will take the stage Aug. 27. (Kudos to Daniel and Erma!) As if the great food wasn’t enough motivation, Rancho Nicasio continues its outdoor summer Sunday barbecue series with four amazing musical guests this month. Rancho will present The Subdudes Aug. 8, the Tommy Castro Band with special guest vocalist Deanna Bogart on Aug. 15, the David Grisman Experience Aug. 22, and nine-time Grammy award-winners Asleep at the Wheel on Aug. 29. Make sure you catch one of these great shows and save me some bbq, please! Mill Valley’s In the Woods Productions at Masonic Hall will present some rockin’ shows this month as well. The calendar includes The Beautiful Loser’s CD release party Aug. 6 (with opener Victoria George); Miles Schon’s birthday bash, as he and his band team up with Fairfax rockers HoneyDust Aug. 14; the slammin’ double bill of El Radio Fantastique and Chrome Johnson on Aug. 20; and finally, The Fumes with Arann Harris and The Farm on Aug. 27. Yes, there is live music in Mill Valley, but music fans should note that the The Woods will close for renovations in September as it adds a cafe, outdoor seating area and expands its menu and hours of operation. Those fabulous Marin ex-pats now based in Austin, Texas, The Mother Truckers, are in town again and can be seen and heard at three local gigs. They will park their “Van Tour” at Fairfax’s 19 Broadway on Aug. 13, San Francisco’s Slim’s Nightclub on Aug. 14 and Petaluma’s Mystic Theatre (along with the 20 PACIFIC SUN AUGUST 6 - AUGUST 12, 2010
aforementioned Chrome Johnson featuring former Mother Truckers drummer Dana Miller) on Sunday, Aug. 15. Welcome back! Here are some great free music events to check out in Marin. Marin Country Mart and localmusicvibe.com present “Friday Night Music” at Larkspur Landing. Their schedule includes The Courtney Janes and Savannah Blu on Aug. 6, Miracle Mule on Aug. 13 and Moonlight Rodeo and Rule 5 on Aug. 20. Did you know that there are free swing dance lessons followed by live music at Peri’s Bar in Fairfax every Wednesday night? And Sausalito’s Seahorse Ristorante (305 Harbor Drive) features live salsa dance lessons and a show every Sunday from 3 to 7pm, free of charge! Dr. Elmo (“Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”) and Larry Carlin (Keystone Crossing) will team up to play a free show at Iron Springs Brewery on Aug. 11. Just back from their East Coast house concert tour, local folkers Three At Last will be featured on KPIG (1510 AM) on Aug. 8 from 10am-noon. Hot tips of the month: Check out Karamo Susso and Roots of Manding this Thursday, Aug. 6, at 19 Broadway. This Gambian kora player and Fairfax resident is an international star who has played with the biggest names in African and world music. He has recently been blowing away crowds at the “Kortuzday” jams on Tuesday nights in town and this will be a night to remember. Visit myspace.com/ karamosusso to see and hear for yourself. Maui-based trio Hapa will make a rare appearance at 142 Throckmorton Theatre on Aug. 21. One of the most popular and award-winning bands to ever come out of Hawai’i, they have been called “the most beautiful and exciting contemporary Hawai’ian music the world knows” by Maui Time weekly. This is a must-see show. Trumpeter Ryan Scott (Monophonics/ Katdelic) and drummer Dave Burns’ collaborative project, West Coast Boogaloo, will revisit Fairfax’s 19 Broadway Wednesday, Aug. 11. This insane seven-piece juggernaut features members of Tower of Power, Parliament, Etta James Band, the Temptations and many others. Moving both booty and brain, this band is a true supergroup that will soon be playing a weekly gig at S.F.’s Boom Boom Room. Catch what will be their last cheap, North Bay show ever. Ever! ✹ Got a hot tip for THE BEAT? Email me at marinbeat@gmail.com. Rawk On!
›› NOTE FROM THE PUBLiSHER Marin’s newest ‘supergroup’! Pacific Sun, LocalMusicVibe to create beautiful music together... Marin is a bastion of musical creativity for those who perform and those who enjoy. Haight-Ashbury hippies cruising their VWs across the bridge in the late ‘60s might have inspired this cultural phenomenon—but now most Marin musicians are homegrown, and a couple of generations have been raised to appreciate the county’s undeniable artistry and talent. The Pacific Sun has spent the last 48 years providing the “who, what and where” for Marinites looking for live music. LocalMusicVibe.com has spent the past few years connecting fans, bands, venues and businesses—growing rapidly as it feeds the county’s need for live entertainment. So when the opportunity arose for the Pacific Sun to combine forces with LocalMusicVibe, we all jumped at the chance! LocalMusicVibe.com is an extension of MarinLocalMusic.com, which found much success by raising awareness of the Marin music scene—attracting new fans and increasing attendance at local shows. The site was founded by husband and wife entrepreneurs Dave and Shelley Champine. With this banding together of the Pacific Sun and LocalMusicVibe.com, everyone wins— especially the fans who’ll get more show listings, more information about the bands and even a taste of the Marin live scene through the site’s video streams. This partnership offers an outlet for fans, bands, venues and businesses to interact here in Marin, one of the most vibrant music scenes in the country. Since readers already look to the Sun for where to see and be seen, and LocalMusicVibe.com allows bands and venues to promote their shows easily and at no cost, the partnership is a natural. Visitors to PacificSun.com/music will be able to see the Sun’s most recent local music stories, videos, information on artists and featured shows—and have access to LocalMusicVibe’s calendar of live music events. (Note:The “live music”event listings that had been on our online community calendar can now be found at pacificsun.com/music.) To celebrate the union, the Pacific Sun and LMV are planning a launch party—featuring Marin bands at a Marin venue. Stay tuned for more info. —Gina Channell-Allen

Natalie Merchant is solo these days—putting 9,999 maniacs out of work and on the streets.
Leave Your Sleep is ambitious by any standard. It features more than 100 musicians, including a string section, jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, gospel greats the Fairfield Four and the jazz trio Medeski, Martin and Wood. The original music runs the gamut from Cajun to Celtic to klezmer to jazz to pop. Each lyric is crafted from a poem. Merchant spent two years combing through stacks of poetry, including works by e.e.
cummings and Robert Louis Stevenson. She recorded 50 songs, 26 of which are on the double CD. “These poets, each and every one of them, was a master in his or her own right,” she says. “I feel like I was able to draw on hundreds of years of experience and skill just by flipping through the pages of books and selecting at random works by people who had created hundreds of poems and, in some cases, dozens of novels. “Especially with the more obscure poets—like Arthur Macy or William Brighty Rands or Nathalia Crane—I enjoyed taking them out of the shadows and casting a light on them.” To put the many musicians in the proper mindset, Merchant recorded the album in a residential studio in upstate New York, away from cell coverage and the distractions of modern life. Oftentimes, the players were treated to “long leisurely meals at a big table, family-style,” she says. “I wrote all the music and I live in that environment. I wanted to continue with that same feeling. “I mean, when I wrote ‘Autumn Lullaby,’ it was a really still night, probably 2 o’clock in the morning, and I was nursing my infant and the window was open and the rain was falling. I feel that I captured that moment, which is gone now—poof! It’s gone forever. “But we captured it in the sessions and I’ll always be transported to that place. My hope is that I can transport other people to that place as well, to the stillness and peacefulness and intimacy of that moment.” How does she maintain that unhurried pace, that sense of intimacy, on a busy crosscountry concert tour? “It’s difficult,” she says. “I think that feeling lives in the music now. I depend on the music to bring it to me.” ✹

South Korean director Bong Joon-ho somehow missed the filmic upheaval of the ‘90s and ‘00s that turned world cinema into cutty, shaky and emphatic television. His monster classic The Host was a solid little diamond of tension and understatement, saving its most thrilling moments for the distances and corners of the screen. MOTHER shows his mastery of the Hitchcock form, and its tale of child murder and false accusation is unwound with the darkly comic precision now recognized to be Bong’s stamp. Hye-ja Kim Mommie dearest, indeed. stars as the acupuncturist mother of a backward young man who’s accused of the crime. Do-joon was seen following the girl up an alley at the time, and admits under police questioning that his memory goes fuzzy after that. It’s up to his mother to do the real detective work that will suss out the hidden motivations of the girl’s acquaintances and save her son. Bong wrote the role for Hye-ja, a staple of South Korean television for years, and I can’t think of a more stirring or enigmatic performance by an older woman—a reminder of the unjust fate awaiting actresses of a certain age on our side of the pond.—Richard Gould ROBERT

The three-day festival describes itself as an “experiential” event—which basically means they’re screening topical films about contemporary social issues and combining them with musical performances and analytical panel discussions. This year’s baker’s dozen lineup of films includes Climate Refugees, about what becomes of displaced peoples following environmental disasters; The Anatomy of Vince Guaraldi, a documentary on the jazz musician famous for the critically acclaimed soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas; Waste Land, which follows artist Vik Muniz’s return to his native Brazil to photograph the world’s largest garbage dump on the outskirts of Rio; and How I Am, a doc focusing on the life of an autistic teenage boy, told in his own words. There’s also a “secret screening” of a new film by an “acclaimed director” and starring an “Oscar-winning actor,” according to the festival. Events are held at Cavallo Point Lodge in Fort Baker. Tickets are $10 advance; $12 door. Call 415/887-9506 or check out www.sausalitofilmfestival.com.—Jason Walsh 24 PACIFIC SUN AUGUST 6 - AUGUST 12, 2010

Week of August 5-August 11, 2010
ARIES (March 20 - April 19) If things have been a little rough between you and your significant other, Venus the peacemaker arrives to smooth things over. Of course, she is just one charming planet attempting to calm the continuing conflicts between shocking Uranus, judgmental Saturn, know-it-all Jupiter and argumentative Mars. So this week, take full advantage of the playful Sun in your entertainment house while you can. TAURUS (April 20 - May 19) On Friday, your ruler (Venus) leaves the discriminating sign of Virgo to enter the cooperative sign of Libra. This could bring better vibes to your work environment. Any creative project in the works is likely to change direction as you try to balance practical purpose with the desire to break free from tradition. The same sort of balancing act could be influencing your romantic life. GEMINI (May 20 - June 20) Friday’s Moon in the security-conscious sign of Cancer gives you a momentary panic in regard to your finances. By Sunday you are better able to face your situation, so hang in there. Although the energy continues to build in your house of creativity and romance, efforts to enjoy this part of your life are frustrated and distracted. Yes, it is summertime, but the livin’ is NOT easy. CANCER (June 21 - July 21) The Moon in your sign can be beneficial—but not this time. Friday you are forced to battle with unpredictable Uranus, gloomy Saturn, controlling Pluto and bossy Mars. The New Moon in generous Leo on Sunday and Monday encourages you to appreciate those who love you and be grateful for any material abundance—no matter how meager in relationship to the 1 percent of Americans who are billionaires. LEO (July 22 - August 22) This is one of those years when planning a birthday celebration takes a bit of flexibility—especially if you’re hoping for a party on Friday, when any major festivity should have liability insurance. A New Moon in your sign on Sunday and Monday provides an opportunity to make a wish (or plan a goal) that will ultimately come true. It might also be a better time for a birthday party in case Friday and Saturday fall through. VIRGO (August 23 - September 21) Although passionate about expressing your genuine self right now, you are encountering obstacles. Whether a creative project or a quest for romantic adventure, the path is rocky and unsettling. You might, for instance, fall “in love” while in line at the bank only to find out the person is dating your best friend. Nothing is quite what it seems in this week’s topsy-turvy world. Proceed with caution. LIBRA (September 22 - October 22) Venus (your ruler) moves into your sign and she gives a rather convincing argument on the benefits of having a significant other, in spite of the large contingency of planets arguing for independence. Already attached? Turn up the heat with your sweetie. If looking for love, you could have a passionate encounter on Monday. In any case, there is a chance that jealousy will be an unwelcome factor in the equation. SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) The Moon in Cancer on Friday opposes your ruler (Pluto in Capricorn). By itself, no big deal; however, thanks to an overwhelming number of planets in hard angles to Pluto, this could feel like the last straw. Those who like to meditate may not experience peace or bliss during the next week or two. But all is not lost. You could get well-deserved recognition for a career achievement. So if the boss calls you in, don’t panic. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 20) Usually you enjoy this time of the year— the playful Sun lights up your house of exploration, bringing opportunities to broaden your horizons. But this year you are likely to be dealing with a financial crisis and unexpected fluctuations in your investment portfolio. And, for some reason, a friend is acting either cold or angry or both. To quote a famous Stones line: “You can’t always get what you want...” CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 18) The Moon in your opposite sign of Cancer is never much fun. Adding a significant number of planets in a challenging placement to your Sun in Capricorn only makes it worse. If you can isolate yourself from annoyances on Friday, do it. Monday night a chance for intimacy is a good time to reassure your sweetie that Friday was a temporary aberration. This enhanced desire continues into Tuesday night, so you might actually be right. AQUARIUS (January 19 - February 17) As the Sun moves through your opposite sign of Leo, you should review your progress since your last birthday. Are the goals you set still valid? If a certain goal has no more appeal, can you walk away without leaving someone in the lurch? And, of course, this is the time to put a significant amount of energy into your relationship (or attaining a relationship if you’re single). Feel free to take a nap first. PISCES (February 18 - March 19) The Moon in mushy Cancer is usually a good sign for romance. This Friday, however, the planets completely block the Moon from performing her lunar magic. Meantime, lovable Venus has left your relationship house to join two very different planets in your lust house. Sexy Mars and prudish Saturn are duking it out on whether or not you should indulge your desires. An opposition from upsetting Uranus only adds to the stress. ✹ Email Lynda Ray at cosmicclues@gmail.com or check out her website at www.lyndarayastrology.com AUGUST 6 – AUGUST 12, 2010 PACIFIC SUN 29

ADViCE GODDESS®
by Amy Alkon
Q:
I love to dress up and go socialize with people. My boyfriend, however, can only smile and chitchat for about 20 minutes before he seats himself in some corner and starts reading the host’s books. Last time we went to a dinner party, I found him alone in a room petting the owner’s dog! I do introduce him around and encourage him to be more outgoing. I think if he’d just make more of an effort to talk to people, he’d have a better time. He says he’s not miserable but just can’t do this social stuff for long. I love having him with me, even though he’s kind of not actually with me. So, can it work with a self-proclaimed introvert and a party girl?—Social Butterfly
A:
It’s a party! You’re in your element, making the rounds, meeting tons of new people, racking up invites to parties after the party, and your boyfriend’s, well, probably in that little crawlspace under the host’s stairs. Sartre once said, “Hell is other people at breakfast.” An introvert sees no reason to narrow it down to a particular time of day. My own introvert boyfriend is charming and fun one on one, but his favorite kind of party is one that’s canceled, and his preferred RSVP would be something Ving Rhames said on the set of Out of Sight: “I don’t want to talk to anybody I don’t already know.” Ever since Freud decided (sans evidence) that introverts were repressed, narcissistic trolls under the bridge, extraversion has been considered the ideal and introverts have been seen as socially stunted. Introversion is also wrongly conflated with shyness, but shyness is fear- and shame-based—quite different from seeing no reason to say anything to strangers unless you or they are on fire. More and more, research points to a strong biological basis for personality. Brain imaging shows distinct differences in introverts and extraverts. Studies by neuroscientist Debra L. Johnson and others found that extraverts, who get energized from external stimulation like meeting new people, have increased blood flow to rear areas of the brain for sensory processing (like listening, touching, watching). Introverts, who tend to be more pensive and introspective, and are easily overwhelmed by too much external stimulation, showed more blood flow altogether (indicating more internal stimulation), over more complicated pathways, with more activity in frontal regions for inward tasks like problemsolving, reasoning and remembering. Put that together with a Chinese study adding evidence that introverts get socked with a higher level of cortical arousal from stimuli, and you get the idea that urging introverts to be more outgoing is a bit like urging scissors to be more like a stapler. So, can it work between you and a boyfriend who probably researches the host’s wallpaper so he can dress to blend into the background? Well, maybe— if you’re independent enough to show up to most events without him as Your Date(tm). There will, of course, be times when it means something to you to have him there, and the compromise then is his to make. Be sensitive to his feelings, try to get there early (when the houseplant-to-guest ratio is greatest) and be OK with him eventually slinking off to read or talk to the dog (who’s sometimes the most interesting person at the party).
Q:
Is there any way, for a man out on a date with a woman to utter the phrase “Whoopsie daisy” and not see a Road Runner cloud where she was just sitting?—Just Curious
A:
Just wondering...under what circumstances would a man (you?), on a date with a woman, be compelled to utter the phrase “Whoopsie daisy”? Dropped your knitting? Or, was it your Hello Kitty wallet and matching compact? There are some women who like to date girlier types, and they’re called lesbians. Otherwise, unless you’re joking, and your date shares your sense of humor, you probably will see a cartoon puff of smoke in her wake if you talk like her elderly aunt. You don’t have to grunt and adjust yourself every two minutes, but if you’re looking for a conversational role model, lean more toward Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry than Kurt Hummel in Glee.✹ © Amy Alkon, all rights reserved. www.advicegoddess.com.
