Whether you’re in the market for a state-of-the-art Diamondback mountain bike, or merely need to give an older model a bit of a tune up, Mike’s Bikes is worth every penny-farthing.

modern Times While the post-World War I era of factory labor, conveyor-line industry and smoke-spewing jalopies wasn’t renowned for its environmentalism, the first great American conservation movement was picking up steam. Theodore Roosevelt had recently established the National Park Service and action was taken to protect endangered bison and other imperiled species (alas, we weren’t in time to save the passenger pigeon). Marinites of the ’20s were already “going green” with land preservation (thank you, William Kent), locally grown agriculture and pre-locavore fermenting of all the rye, wheat and juniper berries we could get our hands on. Today’s green-minded county entrepreneurs are proudly carrying on the tradition... BEST BIKE SHOP “Bikes bring joy,” says Mike’s Bikes general manager Dan Sankey, “and we want people coming in to the store to be excited about riding.” Whether the customer is a seasoned, spandex-clad cyclist with the sweetest of sweet all-weather gear simply looking for the newest Specialized component, or a parent who has just removed little Johnny’s training wheels and needs a new helmet for his ever-expanding head, the staff at Mike’s Bikes continues to win the hearts of Marin cyclists with stellar customer service. Now with nine Northern California locations and an international nonprofit program bringing bikes and training programs to remote regions of

Africa, the awesomeness of Mike’s Bikes transcends Marin and spreads throughout the world. ----------------------------------------------Mikes Bikes

timeless. The magic of strolling through an enchanting garden is captivating. Combine the two and you get a euphoric experience. Head to Muir Beach, and when you’ve had your fill of sand, waves and sea breezes, walk south from the bridge to the parking area, heading back toward the creek. Follow the signs to Green Gulch Farm Zen Center . The trail winds through marshland and suddenly, there is a gate to the gardens at Green Gulch. Stunning and varied, paths meander through different outdoor “rooms” defined by specimen plants, orchards and cultivated fields. Both sides of the main trail hold mystery and amazement. At press time, Redwood Creek, which separates Muir Beach from Green Gulch Farm, was undergoing a restoration project that may have altered the trail, although it was still open. —Brooke Jackson

Organic, no-GMO, local and sustainable are all standards that the Good Earth strives to meet, giving customers the information they need to make food choices that are right for their bodies and the Earth. BEST NURSERY/GARDEN CENTER When asked why readers consider Sloat Garden Centers Best of Marin, operations manager Dave Stoner’s first response was “its the people who work here.” But he has many more reasons, including Sloat’s signature item, pottery—particularly Crescent, a new line of lightweight, resin-based pottery in striking shapes and colors. He says that “sustainability, growing your own groceries” has become important to many Marinites. And beyond merely supplying plants, the “plant geeks” share knowledge and information on the every71 > MARCH 25 – MARCH 31, 2011 PACIFIC SUN 67

The “garden doctor” will soon be making the rounds at plant clinics, too. Stoner is excited about tomaccio, the new sweet raisin tomato that is delicious fresh or dried. But wait, there’s more: Part of the growing-at-home trend, keeping chickens is catching on, and Sloat has modular coops for those feathered friends. As part of its mission of growing and feeding, Sloat will host a food drive this spring, benefiting the Marin Food Bank. BEST ORGANIC PRODUCE Marin is blessed with an abundance of agriculture, the dedicated farmers who harvest those crops, and the health-savvy residents who appreciate the literal fruits of their labor. Nowhere is this more apparent than at the Marin County Farmers Market, where shoppers stroll and select from a dazzling cornucopia of fresh and locally grown, mostly organic fruits and veggies. The Agricultural Institute of Marin operates the farmers markets that sprout up weekly at the Civic Center and from spring through autumn in both Novato and Fairfax. But another vital aspect of AIM’s mission is education. As part of the many educational programs, AIM’s Tyler Thayer has been leading school tours of budding gastronauts to the farmers market for the past 11 years, noting that “if you give kids the opportunity, they want to explore.”

Thayer believes food is an experience, and that by learning about, tasting and cooking it, the imparted culinary knowledge will empower children to make their own healthy choices. Ultimately, by teaching residents, young and old, about the nutritional and economic benefits of buying produce directly from local growers, AIM helps the county’s communities and agriculture truly blossom. ----------------------------------------------Marin County Farmers Market (Agricultural Institute of Marin)

Staff Pick BEST THRIFT-SHOPPING FOR THE KITCHEN Items from the Roaring Twenties are rare in thrift shops, though cocktail glasses, chafing dishes and swizzle sticks can still be found. Whether you’re seeking props for photos, prepping a period party or outfitting a kitchen, thrifts are the way to go. There’s a lot of barware at Catholic shops: swizzle sticks, shakers, the occasional martini pitcher. Two main sources are Mount Carmel, Mill Valley, and Larkspur’s St. Patrick’s Thrift Store. Family-owned and operated Nelson Staffing has been providing services in Northern California for 40 years. The company is big enough to offer all manner of services, yet small enough to be able to give personal assistance to their various clients in the areas of staffing and human resource solutions. From temporary, part-time help to full-time employment to recruiting strategies and executive searches, the agency handles staffing needs as general as administrative/office help to placing professionals in financial, legal, technology, healthcare industries and more—even the specific needs of the wine industry. Many clients rely on the payroll services and human resources support. It’s a win-win both for businesses looking for employees and those who wish to find employment, all while supporting a longtime local business. ----------------------------------------------Nelson Staffing

BEST RESALE/CONSIGNMENT CLOTHING SHOP At first, Laura Walker claimed she couldn’t explain why Stella’s Fine Consignments, which she co-owns with sister Anna Psaila, has such loyal—not to mention welldressed—customers. After some prodding, she humbly acknowledged that the eclectic selection of stylish clothing, including designer, high-end and popular labels, keeps women coming back—as they have for 11 years. These hands-on owners are “both there all the time”—they have only one other regular employee—and it’s clear that they take great pride in their store and inventory, striving to meet customers’ needs and wants. Regulars appreciate that the sisters know

their tastes and preferences and can steer them to suitable options. (Having an innate sense of style certainly helps.) Speaking of suits, you won’t find any here—or pumps, either. But just about anything else, including shoes, accessories and jewelry, is easy to find in the comfy, welcoming and well-laid out shop. The store is a magnet for moms and daughters—with a selection, in all sizes, appropriate for teens on up. ----------------------------------------------Stella’s Fine Consignments

BEST SOLAR SUPPLIER “Solar power makes your house self-heating and therefore more valuable,” says Bill Stewart, president of SolarCraft. “You save a lot of money on your PG&E bill, especially in the long run, and of course you reduce your carbon footprint.” Since its founding in 1984, the company has solarized a goodly percentage of Marin County, including Ross School, the Marin Health & Wellness Center and Fairfax’s Meadow Club. But the business really expanded after 2000, when solar electricity became commercially viable, and in more recent years, as the company’s embraced solar thermal for pools and homes as well. Another key to SolarCraft’s success is its customer service. “We send a trained technician to analyze and design a system for your home, and as the crew installs the system, we walk the customer through every step in the process,” says vice president Bob Smith. “That’s what sets us apart.” ----------------------------------------------SolarCraft

There’s enough to worry about in these modern times without outdated and unreliable toys to contend with—which is why our readers recommend Five Little Monkeys for little ones and Little Tramps everywhere.

The Cat’s pajamas Kids in the 1920s were living the good life! The 80 percent of them that didn’t attend school landed promising careers in such lucrative fields as “newsboy,” “millhand” and “chimney sweep”—that is until progressive do-gooders in Congress wrote up the Child Labor Amendment in an effort to impinge upon parents’ inherent right to work those prepubescent hands to the bone (fear not—patriotic Republicans killed the amendment). Things are vastly different for county imps these days, when tots have exchanged their mining torches for the “fun-fun-funnest” in day camps, birthday parties and educational toys that money can buy.

BEST ART SUPPLIES

BEST CHILDREN’S CLOTHING

For four decades (three years in San Rafael), Rileystreet Art Supply has catered to professional artists, beginning artists, teachers and students working in every medium, from painting and drawing to charcoal, printmaking, photography, sculpting and textiles. The sunny, sky-lit, high-ceilinged space stocks a fantastic assortment of easels, pastels, canvases, papers, brushes, stationery, art books, modeling clay, drafting materials, portfolios, block prints, photo albums and much more, and offers figure drawing sessions, a full schedule of ongoing classes and free art demonstrations every Saturday morning. “We have frequent sales, a popular kids’ section, just about all the tools you might need and a very knowledgeable staff eager to help people with their projects,” says store manager Bente Mirow. The store supports local artists and art organizations, too. ----------------------------------------------Rileystreet Art Supply

Herbert Heller started his store for children’s goods in San Rafael in 1958, and it’s been going strong ever since. His daughter Linda and her husband, Barry, took over five years ago, and Heller’s for Children is Marin’s go-to place for all things kiddie—from furniture to books to car seats, toys and especially, clothing, clothing, clothing for the well-dressed tot. the kids themselves choose from a wide array of ultra-fun activities. At 18 Bay Area locations (four in Marin), youngsters can try their hand at filmmaking, cooking, performing, sewing or throwing pottery, or (if they’re feeling more exuberant) cavorting on a bungee trampoline, sliding down a 90-foot water chute, racing a bathtub go-kart and lots more. (Traditional day camp activities like soccer, baseball and hockey are offered as well.) A lunch program with seven freshly made organic options is included in the fee, and the logistics are simplicity itself: “Once you’ve registered, show up anytime,” whether it’s just for one day or for the whole midJune to mid-August season. ----------------------------------------------Steve and Kate’s Camp

BEST KID-FRIENDLY, NON-CHAIN RESTAURANT Kids 10 and under can choose from the ubiquitous kid-menu favorites—hot dog, chicken tenders or grilled cheese—at Max’s Cafe of Corte Madera. But for those kids with a more sophisticated palate who do eat “grown-up” food, Max’s offers more— like a turkey club or barbecue pulled pork sandwich, broiled salmon or BBQ chicken breast, all served with chopped salad, fries or Mandarin oranges. Every item from the kids’ menu comes with milk or a soft drink and a scoop of ice cream for dessert. Rather than settle for a mere scoop of ice cream, children with bigger appetites may favor the flower pot sundae—chocolate cake, vanilla ice cream, gummy worms, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and a cherry—a reasonable

$2.50. Booths are large enough to hold a good-sized family without being squished together. Meanwhile, the rest of the party can enjoy big portions of an amazing variety of dishes—the restaurant’s motto: Everything you’ve always wanted to eat— and those old enough can relax with an adult beverage from the full bar. ----------------------------------------------Max’s Cafe of Corte Madera

BEST OVERNIGHT SUMMER CAMP Camp Soulajoule, the residential summer camp at Walker Creek Ranch in West Marin, is a place that kids return to again and again. Campers aged 8-12 are treated to a special learning experience that emphasizes environmental education through idyllic outdoor activities, such as swimming, canoeing, hiking, nature crafts, volleyball, archery and a trip to the beach. Nighttime activities include campfires, dusk hikes and a Barn Boogie. The camp offers a unique leadership program for 13-15-yearolds called Junior Counselor in Training. All counselors, naturalists and staff at Camp Soulajoule hold the place dear to their hearts and work closely together. By fostering that sense of community, campers feel as if they are coming home when they pull into the entrance. ----------------------------------------------Camp Soulajoule at Walker Creek Ranch

A good groomer is an asset to a dog’s owner. The customers at Doggie Styles feel this in spades. Run by twin sisters Janine and Melinda Schengel, Doggie Styles is THE place for dog grooming. The sisters had years of training as animal hospital health technicians, which gave them the intuitive knowledge and confidence to make dogs feel at ease. Not only do they wash and fluff your mutt, but they also clip nails, clean ears and check eyes. No need for an appointment for a bath or brush-out for your pooch, but do call for a haircut. The two women love what they do and are in awe of their customers, who have repeatedly voted Doggie Styles Best Pet Groomer. ----------------------------------------------Doggie Styles

BEST PET STORE Recent evolutionary theory holds that about 15,000 years ago dogs evolved from wild beasts by feeding off food left behind by humans—the braver (and tamer) canines got more scraps and garbage and thus self-selected to help create the modern dog. Of course Marin’s mutts would never settle for garbage—their owners are evolved enough to know that Pet Club in Corte Madera is the place to go for high-quality pet food at very good prices, as well as leashes, collars, bouncy balls and squeaky toys. Pet Club has all you need for kitty-cats, too, as well as for friends with scales, feathers or a propensity to squeak. ----------------------------------------------Pet Club

BEST PLACE FOR A KID’S PARTY (HALL OF FAME: DISCOVERY MUSEUM) Creativity can be messy. Birthdays can be messy. But both are to be encouraged. No wonder Marin parents love Doodlebug when their tots need to stick another candle on the cake. Doodlebug has a private room especially for parties for anywhere from eight to 20 guests—guests who can celebrate by having a pottery-painting party or many other options described on DoodlebugMarin. com, including “Mirror, Mirror” (decorate a mirror); “Clay Play”; “Bling-a-thon” (jewelry making); “Mermaid Party” (paint a mermaid); “Beautiful Birdhouses” and “Design a Pet,” which, we assure you, does not involve a poodle and a Labrador retriever, but cloth and stuffing. Doodlebug is also happy to supply cakes and other goodies. < 73 The cat’s pajamas toys were made to last and not based on the latest movie or TV craze... And those qualities, says store manager Claire Byars, keep customers coming back to this specialty toy store in downtown Novato. Byars says owner Stephanie Sala has a real sense for “picking out toys that are safe, developmentally appropriate, whimsical and open-ended enough to trigger a child’s imagination. Children’s books—from classics to more modern fare—are a big draw, as are Legos, a broad array of arts and crafts supplies for all

ages and vehicles of all kinds. Hexbugs and Stomp Rockets are pretty big right now, and so is Sophie the giraffe, an inexplicably popular toy for babies. Sala buys from a number of green toy businesses and is in the process of having her own store green-certiďŹ ed. And as if that all weren’t enough, Byars says, “We gift-wrap enthusiastically.â€? ----------------------------------------------Five Little Monkeys

In addition, the gallery partners with other nonprofits like Visual Aid and Canal Community Alliance to help bring art to everyone. But wait, there’s more: “We have 37 studios on the premises as well as affordable housing for the artists,” says volunteer coordinator Shari Byrnes, “plus alternative theater, Second Fridays art talks and summer camps for kids.” How artistic can you get? 78 PACIFIC SUN MARCH 25 – MARCH 31, 2011

What is it about the place that attracts such star power? “It has that intimate feeling, a closeness between the performer and the audience,” says set designer Steve Coleman. “There isn’t a bad seat in the house.” Built nearly a century ago, the place was on its last legs when Lucy Mercer bought it in 1999. “It’s a dump brought back to life,” says “Jill of all trades” Cheryl Craig. “There was dry rot, walls without support, an underground spring, green shag carpeting, even an old coffin.” Now the place boasts stable walls, new seating, acoustic panels and a top-grade Meyers PA sound system. (“People rave about

our acoustics,” says facilities manager Tim Stone.) 142 Throckmorton also has its own youth division, Marin Youth Performers. “We have a teen a cappella ensemble and an instrumental internship program that provides the orchestra for youth musicals around the Bay Area,” says youth programs director Adam Saville. BEST MUSIC/CD STORE Having won four different times for related categories, Mill Valley Music is ďŹ lling the need for vinyl and CDs in Marin. Owner Gary Scheuenstuhl told us that 75 percent of his sales are record purchases, capping a three-year surge in popularity for LPs. The demand for records remains high due to a craving for the premier sound quality of analog technology and the artwork on the cover. Most of the record-buying is by folks in their 30s-50s, as well as a younger group using them for deejay-ing. A CD or MP3 download code generally accompanies each new album so the listener isn’t restricted to a turntable for his or her listening pleasure. Scheuenstuhl is living his dream: “Music is my passion, people are grateful that I’m there.â€?

BEST PLACE FOR A WEDDING Imagine getting married in a tranquil, historic setting, surrounded by heritage trees and lovely gardens—maybe at a gazebo or by a pond with a fountain—with access on the grounds to commercial kitchens for the caterer, wiring for a sound system. Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it? Well, as long as the guest list doesn’t go much over a couple of hundred— meaning not all those Facebook friends will make the cut—a memorable wedding and reception (or any festivity) can be had at the venerable Marin Art & Garden Center. Lauren Duncan, project coordinator, says the history-steeped beautiful property hosts outdoor and indoor celebrations every weekend from April through October—peak season for the various gardens. The Garden and Livermore rooms, which open onto stunning areas, both have a bride’s dressing room and other amenities. Duncan says the center remains very popular among those who grew up in the area and moved away—but want to come back for their wedding. And who can argue with her statement that there “isn’t another place like this in Marin? ------------------------------------------------Marin Art & Garden Center

BEST THEATER COMPANY “We produce provocative plays by passionate playwrights in an intimate setting,” says Julie Knight, marketing director at the Shari Byrnes ArtWorks Downtown

Marin Theatre Company, explaining the troupe’s perennial critical acclaim. The result has been several Bay Area Theater Critics Circle awards, two national play prizes and recognition as one of the Bay Area’s only five regional (as opposed to neighborhood) theaters. The company produces six plays per year, each with an all-Equity cast, offering a well-balanced menu of classics, contemporary fare and at least one world premiere. Question-and-answer sessions with the cast and artistic staff follow every performance (except Saturday night), and the more intimate Lieberman Theatre next door features small productions, rehearsals and staged readings. The company also takes a kid-friendly play on the road to Marin elementary and middle schools every year and offers summer theater camp to children 7 to 14 years old. ------------------------------------------------Marin Theatre Company

model t’s & Jalopies BEST AUTO DEALER Everyone loves Hondas. But for Keith Rey of Marin Honda, his business is more about building community than it is just selling cars. “We’ve always aspired to be not one of the best car dealerships,” he says, “but one of the best businesses, period.” Attributing nearly 10 Best of awards to the fact that his staff is not only loyal to the company, but loyal to the Marin community, Rey is proud of Marin Honda’s reputation as a reliable and honest place to buy cars. After calling the Corte Madera location home since 1985, Marin Honda is moving back to San Rafael in a newly remodeled location at 2 Shoreline Parkway, across from Home Depot. Rey is excited about the new site, which he says has been designed to better suit customer needs. “We just love being here in Marin.”

With all the rickety jalopies, fuel-guzzling hayburners and collapsing Model T’s on the road in the Roaring Twenties—who didn’t need a darn good mechanic? Some things never change, and whether Gatsby and Daisy are driving out to West Egg or West Marin, there’s no underestimating the importance of quality auto care.

Both online and on-site estimates are offered, and “we also do complete claims handling, walking the customer through

every step in the process,” says sales and marketing rep Rebecca Brunk. Lifetime warranty, too! ----------------------------------------------Blake’s Auto Body

BEST FOREIGN CAR REPAIR As much as you hate the traffic in Marin, you love your cars. And thankfully, so does CRO Import Auto Service, a 32-year-old repair shop you trust with your adorable little rolling box of metal. Owner Carlo Gardin, along with his team of certified mechanics, empowers his customers to make decisions for their cars by offering facts—not high-pressure sales—on what the vehicle needs. CRO is a full-service shop (sans tires) that works on all cars, foreign and domestic, and even vintage restoration, although it specializes in Volvos. “There’s nothing we can’t do,” says Gardin, 82 PACIFIC SUN MARCH 25 – MARCH 31, 2011

BEST TIRE SHOP Whether you have a brand-new, 505-hp, 752-foot-pound twin turbo V8 Bentley Mulsanne, or a beat-up old ’71 Ford Pinto, you will go nowhere without tires. Not to mention, caring for the quality and maintenance of those tires is paramount to your safety, as well as the overall efficiency and cost of driving your vehicle. That’s why, year after year, you go to the friendly folks at Cain’s Tire, run with steel-belted integrity by the affable family of proud patriarch, Pat McAlonan. McAlonan has built up his well-tread empire—the largest single-location tire shop by volume in the country—over the last 54 years and at 80 years old, he still goes to work every day. Just a few months ago, the family also opened a used tire and brakes annex at 725 Lincoln Avenue. McAlonan objects to “gimmick” selling, relying instead on “competitive pricing, product knowledge, honesty and a sincere desire to help people.” Subsequently, McAlonan and his offspring (along with loyal, truly longtime employees, including Fred Corea, who’s

worked there for over 50 years!) are on a first-name basis with their customers, and the geniality is reciprocated. That’s because at Cain’s, you’re greeted like kin, outfitted with the tires of your choosing, and sent on your merry way in no time flat. Get it, flat? We’re sure you do. And, you know, Cain’s can help with that...

In the market for a used but not abused Aston-Martin? How about a late-model Mercedes or Jag? Savvy car hunters know that California Motors is the place for premium pre-owned vehicles, whether luxury models or the more utilitarian. Current inventory includes the aforementioned Aston-Martin, a Maserati and several Porsches along with Hondas, Hyundais, Mazdas and VWs. They’ll buy your car outright, sell it on consignment or take it as a trade-in. Plus, they offer assistance in obtaining financing. Check out what’s on the lot online. But, if the car you have your heart set on isn’t in the inventory, give California Motors your car criteria and price range and let them find the ideal vehicle. Week of March 24-March 30, 2011

ARIES (March 20 - April 19) It is your birthday cycle and the desire to simply be who you are is strong. Your most unique characteristics are obvious right now. This may be easier for some people to handle than others. On Wednesday, loquacious Mercury starts moving backward in your impulsive sign. If tempted to discuss religious philosophy with your future in-laws, don’t do it. TAURUS (April 20 - May 19) It’s springtime and summer vacation plans should be on your mind Friday and Saturday. Your imagination is vivid, so you may decide to book a trip to somewhere completely different from the usual. Meantime, on Sunday, Venus (your ruler) leaves the intellectual sign of Aquarius to enter the perceptive sign of Pisces. This can help you develop your powers of intuition. Hence your eBay search for a discounted crystal ball. GEMINI (May 20 - June 20) No matter how demanding your duties, you are meant to spend more time with others this week. It is the call of spring, which means getting outdoors and engaging in group activities. Some of you may start practicing softball, some may volunteer, some of you may decide to start a neighborhood garden. I’ll let those of you who prefer lustier group activities to figure it out yourselves.... CANCER (June 21 - July 21) The Moon in your opposite sign of Capricorn over the weekend leaves you vulnerable to low energy. It doesn’t do much for your sense of humor either. On Monday, you are determined to balance pleasure with responsibility, but you may not accomplish this until Tuesday, so try to be patient. Speaking of patience, any abrupt changes in your career plans should be postponed until the end of April. Trust me on this. LEO (July 22 - August 22) Adventures are ever so much fun when the Sun (your ruler) is in the daredevil sign of Aries. That the Sun is under the influence of upbeat Jupiter and rebellious Uranus makes it even more exciting. It is the perfect week to explore, travel and converse with attractive foreigners. Those with a finished manuscript may be able to convince a publisher that you’re the next great American author. Stop doubting and start believing. VIRGO (August 23 - September 21) Restrictive Saturn has a stranglehold on your finances. But the mushy Moon spends most of the weekend in your house of love affairs and romance. Don’t let concerns about money keep you from finding a honey. There is wild and exciting planetary activity taking place in the sector of your chart ruling your intimate life. Working on your taxes or your love life, what’s it going to be? LIBRA (September 22 - October 22) You’ve been in a tough spot for an extended amount of time and are having trouble seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Intellectually, you know it can’t stay this way forever, but emotionally, you feel as if you’re at the mercy of fate. The passage of your ruler (Venus) from the objective sign of Aquarius to the irrational sign of Pisces on Sunday will not help matters. Neither will a pitcher of martinis ... SCORPIO (October 23 - November 21) Your ruler (profound Pluto) battles it out with the flamboyant Sun this week. This could lead a co-worker who cares more about outward looks than inward character to test your patience while working together. In better news, lovable Venus joins sexy Mars in your house of romance. This may not make it any easier to deal with your superficial co-worker, but it certainly helps you enjoy your after-hour activities. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 - December 20) No matter how much fun you are having, you still feel like something is missing. The opposition from constrictive Saturn to your ruler, expansive Jupiter, is particularly strong this week. This dampens your innate optimism and limits your usual abundance of joviality. The solution? Follow the ways of fellow Sagittarian Woody Allen: Put on a Groucho Marx movie and laugh your cares away. CAPRICORN (December 21 - January 18) While many signs look at springtime as an invitation to go outdoors, your sign has a tendency to get domestic. Suddenly, you want to try out new recipes, paint your bathroom and plant potted herbs on your patio. Meanwhile, you’re trying to deal with all the old friends and past lovers who have suddenly reappeared in your life. Well, at least you’ll have help painting your bathroom. AQUARIUS (January 19 - February 17) The party happening in your house of interaction has a lively effect on your relationships with siblings, neighbors and new acquaintances. You are happy to discuss anything with anyone and really don’t care whether you’re toeing the party line or not. You may butt heads with your sister, let your dandelions creep into your neighbor’s yard and delight in shocking your new pals. Well, after all, you are the zodiac’s most famous rebel, aren’t you? PISCES (February 18 - March 19) As the weekend begins, your “my way or the highway” mentality spoils your reputation for being the sensitive one. By Monday, you regain your sweetness while still holding on to just enough of a sexy edge to make it all work in your favor. One of your pals may try to tap into your renowned willingness to give by asking for a “loan” on Monday. Unless you really don’t care if you ever get repaid, you may want to gently refuse... < Email Lynda Ray at cosmicclues@gmail.com or check out her website at www.lyndarayastrology.com MARCH 25 – MARCH 31, 2011 PACIFIC SUN 93

Q:

According to you, most women aren’t interested in seeing pictures of naked men. To quote you, most would “run past a naked man to get to shoes.” So, how do you explain all the women who go to clubs to see male strippers? Looks like somebody has to admit she’s wrong! —Gotcha!

A:

Men and women go to strip clubs for different reasons. But, don’t just take it from me. Let the Wiggle Willy Head Bopper do the talking. It’s a headband with two glitter-flecked plastic penis antennae sprouting out of pink marabou feathers that women wear to strip club bachelorette parties. Just wondering... when’s the last time you saw a man enter a strip club with a big plastic vagina strapped to his head? A man’s goal in going to a strip club is getting turned on and maybe having strippers grind in his lap—not having all his friends laughing in his face. If women were wired like men and could get physically aroused just by looking at the opposite sex, you’d see something you never do, the lone woman at a male strip joint on her lunch hour, nursing a whiskey and clutching a wad of ones. According to researcher Beth Montemurro, who watches women watch men strip, women show up in giggling herds because they mainly go to bond with their girlfriends. The bonding comes through shared embarrassment, and if the ladies start breathing heavy, it’s probably because they’re hyperventilating from laughing so hard. For women, Montemurro found that the stripper is less a sex object than a source of humor. Yes, it’s just like in all those pornos for guys where they replace the moaning and screaming with the laugh track from Two and a Half Men. While a guy will spend the week’s grocery money trying to get a stripper to ride him like a pony, Montemurro observed women gingerly touching a male stripper’s butt, then pulling their hands back as if burned. Some women find the strippers hot, but most describe them and the experience with words like “disgusting,” “mortifying” and “humiliating,” writes Montemurro in Something Old, Something Bold: Bridal Showers and Bachelorette Parties. One woman she interviewed had root canal-like enthusiasm for seeing a stripper, deeming it “something you should probably do once and then you don’t have to do it again.” Don’t tell me—that’s exactly the sort of dread men feel at the prospect of watching naked girls gyrating around a greased pole. Beyond the research, just look to the marketplace. There are eleventy bajillion strip clubs for men and the occasional one for women. Women often feel compelled to go to these places on their girls’ night out—as a rite of passage, a hazing for a bride-to-be or a way to get even with a fiance for having a bachelor party. But, the neon signs across North America most effective at separating women and their dollar bills are the ones that say “Nails, Nails, Nails!” not “Live Nude Males.” Sure, some women love to finish their girls’ night out with a lap dance, but probably loads more would rather finish with a coat of clear polish.

Q:

Throughout my three years with my boyfriend, he’s been less than faithful. Two years ago, he told me he met “a cool girl” while out of town. He claimed nothing had happened but good conversation. They’re Facebook friends, and I have an overwhelming urge to message her and ask for the truth. This would give me the resolution I need.—Agonizing

A:

Facebook is just the place to find answers to all of life’s big questions: Which Pokemon character are you? What color gummy bear? How long would you survive a zombie apocalypse? And then, are you one of the skanks my boyfriend cheated on me with? You could ask this woman that last question—ideally, in somewhat more polite language—but even if she writes you back (and maybe even truthfully), what could she tell you that you don’t already know? Your boyfriend is a cheater. Cheaters cheat. Unless he’s given you reason to believe he’s mended his ways, the person you should be asking questions of is yourself: Is my relationship making me happy? If not, why am I still here? Tempting as it is to focus on confirming your suspicions, wouldn’t real resolution be getting into a relationship where you don’t have them? Then you could go back to using Facebook like so many people do—to have an hourly window into how wildly dull their friends are, and yet how intent they are to communicate it: “I’m cheating on Cheerios with oatmeal!!!!!” Well, that does beat yesterday’s “I’m having my breakfast... mmmm.” <
