hange is a part of life. It is often directly related to survival and can enrich one’s life in ways unexpected. Developmental years, especially childhood and young adulthood, are in essence a time of profound change and growth. It is exciting and disquieting at the same time. When it comes to our children and youth, we need to be sure that change is made for the better. We’ve been so concentrated on the brain, we forget about the rest of our bodies. This change in focus has led to an obesity rate that is unacceptable. Our kids are not as healthy as the generation before. Families used to live in a community. Many of us have lost that, keeping kids inside and losing a sense of neighborhood. Add to that the fact that our kids stand to inherit all the economic, social and environmental challenges we’ve created, and the legacy we’re leaving our children and youth begins to look bleak. So, how do we prepare tomorrow’s adults with thee skills, and more important,t, the competencies they will need to tackle changes in our world? We could start with a positive camp experience. A quality camp experience provides our children and youth with the opportunity tunity to learn powerful lessons in community, character building, lding, althy skill development and healthy living—a meaningful, engaged gaged and t. participatory environment. Camp promotes community. unity. It creates this great space that showss kids how to live together and care for one another. otiation of There are norms and negotiation boundaries; there are rules. s. stretching their social, emotional, physical and cognitive muscles outside the context of their immediate family. Camp teaches critical thinking. We need to remember how important it is to be actively involved in the learning process, and camp affords that. We’re going to need really strong problem solvers in the next century. We need the science, math and biology, but without the ability to relate, connect, empathize or inspire innovation, how will our children and youth be able to make a difference in the challenges now facing us? The camp experience embraces the natural environment. While kids today have fewer and fewer opportunities to be outdoors, the camp experience advances the outdoor learning environment. As we become more concerned about saving the planet, we run out and make DVDs and videos about it. But the environment needs to be experienced to be pp appreciated. Ki need to catch tadpoles in the creek, Kids wan among the trees and feel the sun on wander thei faces to understand the importance of their thos things. What happens to a generation those that may grow up not seeing stars in the dar of the night? dark C Camp creates future leaders. The camp exper experience offers kids a close-up look at com compassionate leadership through the cam director, counselors and other camp cam personnel. And kids get loads of camp opp opportunities to practice being a leader the themselves—song leader, lunch table leader, team captain, the list goes on and on. Camp is an equal opportunity life chan changer. It addresses universal needs not spe specific to a particular racial, ethnic or soc socioeconomic group. Nobody is left out. It s all about development. Camp has a It’ l lasting impact. One of the greatest gifts you can give a child or young adult is a sense of success and achievement. 6> Camp teaches kids how to be

try new things. They leave understanding that it’s OK to feel a little uncomfortable sometimes, because that’s generally what happens when you’re getting ready to learn something. The camp experience translates back in real-world experience—in an “I can” attitude. We need to advocate for our young people. We should promote opportunities for kids— give them camp experiences that serve as an antidote for the world’s challenges. We need to recognize this is not a series of frivolous activities. We often think if it looks like fun it must be unimportant, but “fun” is a young person’s “work”—to learn, to grow, to be productive, creative and happy. If they don’t do that work, they won’t turn into healthy adults. Now more than ever, kids need camp. THE LESSONS OF SUMMER CAMP B Y

or more than one hundred years, parents horrified at the prospect of having to care for their restless, sullen teens with no help at all from algebra teachers have been dumping their progeny on summer camps. In the old days, as ’80s period pieces like “Meatballs,” “Little Darlings,” and “Friday the 13th” document, these camps were shabby, isolated Edens of adolescent anarchy. Adult supervision was almost non-existent. Which of course means that summer camps were way too awesome to last in that form forever. According to the American Camp Association, there are more than 12,000 camps operating in the U.S. now — and yet how many tout their ability to develop character through food-based property destruction, or advertise themselves as places where 15-year-old girls place bets on who will lose their virginity first? In the old days, summer camps had their share of scheduled activities, but even with all the horsebackriding, archery lessons, and scavenger hunts, their main draw was the Thoreauvian idleness they imposed on their charges. Out in the deep woods, with no shopping malls, no TVs, and no video arcades, there was nothing to do except

ponder man’s true nature, the meaning of life, one’s place in the universe. Now, however, idleness and introspection have as little cachet at summer camp as they do everywhere else in contemporary society. Instead, productivity and highly specialized expertise are the goal of today’s camps. At the Digital Media Academy, for example, teen campers study “the most relevant software used in Hollywood and the entertainment industry, video game design, and web design while gaining hands-on experience under the eye of highly-accomplished professionals.” Others promise to launch 12-year-olds on the fast track to Harvard, Broadway, and the NBA via intensive, nurturing tutelage. But don’t worry too much about the long-term impact of that cultural shift. The traditional summer camp experience — with all its contemplative downtime, all its heterogenous drama — is still available to those who want it.

experience to sharpen a special skill or develop new ones. Even traditional camps are offering year-round camp experiences, as well as any number of specialty programs. This exciting diversification is an example of how the camp community is meeting the needs of today’s families. WHAT ACTIVITIES ARE POPULAR? The most popular activities at camps today are swimming, arts/crafts, challenge/ropes course, archery, and aquatic activities. In addition, ACA research shows 52 percent of day camps and 50 percent of resident camps offered one or more academic/science and technology programs. More than four in five ACA-accredited residential camps offer at least one environmental education program for campers. Whatever the activity, camp gets kids moving! While at camp, campers are typically active three to five hours per day. This exceeds the recommended daily amount of physical activity from the CDC (one hour per day). Discovery Day Camp at Walker Creek Ranch A program of the Marin County Office of Education, Mary Jane Burke, Marin County Superintendent of Schools. After over 40 years of serving children in the Marin County Outdoor School, and developing a deep understanding of the incredible transformation that can occur when kids learn and grow in a new and caring environment, away from the familiar surroundings of home and family, Walker Creek Ranch is very excited to offer the Discovery Day Camp program. Located in the heart of West Marin, the Ranch is blessed with 1,741 acres of rolling grassy hills, bay forests, and a four acre swimming pond. Our supportive staff helps each child have the best possible experience by acknowledging that each camper is an individual with his or her own strengths and challenges. Campers are encouraged to challenge themselves by experiencing new adventures; all within a program designed to best utilize the natural surroundings and facilities at Walker Creek Ranch. Memories are made and friendships are formed while campers hike, swim, boat, explore and play at the Discovery Day Camp at Walker Creek Ranch. We offer a wide variety of fun and exciting adventure and art-based activities. All campers will have an opportunity to swim in the pond, canoe, try their hand at archery, and complete a variety of arts and crafts projects. In addition each camper will choose from additional activities which may include mask making, a hike to Grandmother Oak, earth art, creek exploration, the challenge course, farm animal fun and organic gardening. We limit the number of participants in each activity period to ensure safety and adequate supervision. vision.
