Save 56,000 gallons of water! Synthetic turf can conserve water, save you money and look great – if you choose wisely!

“I

finally stopped pouring money into my problem lawn – now, I pay less per month for my beautiful, low maintenance Synthetic Lawn.” A good synthetic lawn can conserve tens of thousands of gallons of water each year. It also eliminates the need for harmful pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides and fungicides. What’s more, you’ll never have to mow it again. Not to mention all the time you’ll save. But just as with any other major purchase, it’s important to know exactly what type of product you’re getting and more importantly who’s going to be installing it.

Count On Us Heavenly Greens is the leader in residential installations in Northern California, with almost 4,000 satisfied customers and nearly a decade of experience installing synthetic turf. They have even installed upscale sites such as Santana Row to major corporate campuses including Google and YouTube. Heavenly Greens is a Diamond Certified company and a member of the Better Business Bureau. We offer long-term reliability—just like the turf we install. In fact our turf comes with an industry leading 15-year warranty. FieldTurf Tarkett: The Global Leader The same qualities that make FieldTurf lawn products so effective for professional sports facilities also make it ideal for landscaping: durability, longevity, and economy. The positive environmental impact of FieldTurf provides the added benefit of LEED (The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building contributions and a commitment to protecting the environment. Think Green Forget about those “plastic lawns” of yesterday. Compared to natural grass FieldTurf ’s synthetic lawn products are the best choice for any green landscaping project. FieldTurf is the answer for areas where natural grass is too difficult to grow, water is limited, or the upkeep, mowing and irrigation is just not practical. hen Sausalito was merely a summer playground for wealthy San Franciscans, Major Orson C. Miller moved there and set about developing the “Old Town” area. In 1888, he and his wife built a large (14,000 square feet) house perched on a hill overlooking the town. With stunning water views from every window, the house had all the trappings of a fine Queen Anne Victorian, from gingerbread trim to stained glass windows and gorgeous woodwork. At a time when there were no street addresses, the house came to be known simply as “The Pines.” Major Miller died in 1903 and subsequent owners made significant changes to the property. In 1910, a glass conservatory from England was added to the south side of the house. Another owner divided the original 23 rooms into four apartments. One built a tacky carport down

by the road. During the 60’s and 70’s, hippies painted curlicues and flowers on the exterior woodwork. The next owner devoted several years to meticulously Interior Decorator, SanDee Law restoring the mansion to its original splendor only to have it gutted by a developer who purchased the property in the 1990’s. The sweeping How one family gave new oak stairway meaning to home sweet home and redwood banister were demolished, interior moldings and woodwork dismantled, brass hinges, rewired gaslight fixtures and

original radiators removed. He envisioned a modern Greek-themed manor with marble and columns. This construction dragged on for quite a few years and the property eventually fell into foreclosure. Seeing the potential in what had become a neighborhood eyesore, the house was purchased by a local Sausalito couple. For the past eight years, Gil Purcell and Roxanne Sheridan, and Gil’s dad, Gil, Sr., have hunted down materials and tradesmen to bring the house back to its original condition. Seismic and electrical upgrades were the first order of business, which meant rebuilding the brick foundation. Contractors scoured California and beyond for bona fide 19th century building materials including

thousands of recycled bricks for chimneys, walkways and the foundation. Masonry artisans skilled in the style of 1888 were secured to mortar the bricks. Ancient heart redwood was located, along with woodworkers who had the ability to re-create banisters, moldings and other missing Victorian-era woodwork. From an enormous pile of eradicated debris found in the basement, only three wood panels were able to be rescued, along with some original ironwork, including the front gates. Fortunately, the rewired gaslight fixtures and original radiators were salvageable and have found their way back upstairs. With a keen eye and the patience needed to browse antique stores, flea markets and garage sales, Gil has brought home unique period additions to the project, both functional and decorative, that have been worked into renovation – doors, windows, fixtures, knobs, trims, skirtings and cornices, as well as stately furnishings acquired during a trip to Bordeaux several years ago. A gorgeous antique stained glass skylight, circa 1880, from South America was installed over the stairway and the rooftop widow’s walk was refurbished. Committed to having The Pines be a part of the community of Sausalito, Gil and Roxanne have opened the doors to charities to host fundraisers there and donated studio space to Radio Sausalito, a local jazz station that broadcasts from a comfy brick room in the basement. For all its grandness, the home on Miller Avenue is welcoming and homey. It has taken more time than they originally anticipated yet this tenacious family has never lost sight of their goal to reproduce the period

details that were taken out of the majestic house. Inhabitants and guests always have claimed The Pines is haunted. Lingering whiffs of perfume, loud footsteps in the night and visions of a woman in a hat have been mentioned. Tinny music has been heard recently and people in colorful outfits reportedly roam the halls. Could Major Miller and the residents of the past be watching over the progress of the restoration? If so, they must all be quite pleased. Y

Window Replacement and affordable solutions... 3MTM Window Film is like sunscreen for your home

or many homeowners window replacement can be a great way to upgrade the efficiency, comfort and style of their home. More of a home’s energy is lost through its windows than through any other source. In fact, as much as half of a home’s heating and cooling costs can be lost through windows that are not energy efficient, but the question arises what happens when window replacement isn’t in the budget or what if my new low-e windows are not performing as expected? While damaged or deteriorating windows must be replaced, 3M™ window films provide an affordable alternative to new windows. Window films not only improve energy efficiency they also can reduce uncomfortable solar heat, stop the harmful fading effects of the sun and add a valuable layer of protection against break-ins and natural disasters. Best of all, new and improved window films such as 3M™ prestige series window films can provide all of these benefits without changing the look of your home or the window itself. They can do this because of the new nanotechnology used to produce these window films allows the window film to be made without the use of dyes or metals. This manufacturing process allows 3M™ to make a product with extremely low reflectivity in most cases less reflective then glass itself and high visible clarity. 3M™ Prestige Series films allow 40% to 70% of the natural light into your home. The only thing you’ll see day or night, inside or out, is a beautiful window. Creating a beautiful home or office takes an investment of time and money. Damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can ruin that investment, fading your fabrics, photos, artwork, wood, carpet and wallpaper. But, because 3M™ advanced film blocks over 99% of UV rays, you can fully enjoy your beautiful interiors for years to come. With energy costs seeming to increase every year, 3M™ prestige series window films are a great way to save money and help the environment. Solar heat comes from two primary sources, the visible light you can see and the

infrared light you can feel. Prestige Series window films reject up to 97% of the sun’s infrared light and reject up to 60% of the heat coming through your windows. Best of all 3M™ window films are designed to last, when professionally installed by a licensed contractor such as ClimatePro™ formerly know as Climate Insulating Products, a life-time warranty is given to the homeowner and many cases the window warranty is also covered. 3M™ window films are professionally installed by contractors such as ClimatePro™ to make sure the installation is done correctly. ClimatePro™ has been serving Northern California since 1979 when Louis Miller founded the company out of his garage in Santa Rosa. Since then ClimatePro™ has continued to be owned and operated by the family. ClimatePro™ is unique in the fact that “majority of their employees has been with the company since the beginning” says Jeremy Dobbins the Operations Manager. This fact alone allows ClimatePro™ to deliver top notch customer service and products, being one of the few chosen 3M™ prestige authorized window film dealers in the nation allows them offer the best product on the market backed by one the largest companies in the nation. Andrea Oreck Fine Arts

Bringing the outside in Realistic murals and artistic paint finishes that enhance the beauty and warmth of your home

W

ith a gift for seeing the possibilities in every big, blank wall, Andrea Oreck crafts gorgeous scenes that transport the viewer to another time and place. From hanging Tuscan gardens to an open window beckoning to the forest beyond, Andrea’s murals spark the imagination. The process begins with a consultation where the client describes what theme they had in mind. Ideas unfold and Andrea explains how she sees it on the wall space. Using photos of the wall and computer

software, she is able to show the mural before it is ever painted. Client and artist then work out final details and the painting begins. Most jobs average three to eight days to complete and are tailored for each individual client. Works of her brilliant scenes may also be done on canvas, which allows the art piece to be moved to a new location. Because of the collaborative nature of Andrea’s murals, the client shares the experience of being an artist. Andrea has many talents which contribute to home decor. She does faux finishes, which can expand the mural’s feeling throughout the room and enhance its impact. On-site color consultations for interior and exterior walls allow the homeowner with confidence to find colors that they love. With her precise knowledge of color and different paint manufacturers, Andrea then makes up a final color map to guide the client on their choices. Whatever your artistic and color needs are, call Andrea Oreck for a complimentary estimate. Y Andrea Oreck Fine Arts, P.O. Box 2227, Sebastopol, CA 95473. 707-695-6288. www.andreaoreckfinearts.com

ith 18 years experience as a painter, Ron McGarry knows how to take care of any job. From multi-room business interiors to the tallest cathedral ceiling, Ron is there with paint, brushes and a smile. Back in his home state of New Jersey, Ron owned rental property and did his own maintenance. From remodeling kitchens to patching drywall, most tasks involved painting. He found he was pretty good at it and eventually started getting jobs through word of mouth. Eighteen years later and Ron’s career satisfaction keeps growing. In fact, his favorite motto is “I’m still in a good mood at the end of the day.” Com-

mitment to customer satisfaction is one of the keys to success in Ron’s business. He wants each client to be thrilled with their paint job and will stop at nothing to ensure that goal is fulfilled. Chiosso Bros.

Specializing in custom upholstered furniture for over 50 years The greenest furniture is your furniture...reupholstered!

M

y grandfather and uncle worked for an auctioneer in S.F. in the 20’s and 30’s, reupholstering furniture from estates. When the auctioneer retired, the brothers opened their own custom upholstery shop catering to interior designers they had come in contact with over the years. My father worked for them after WW2, learning the trade from the ground up. He took over in 1954, working out of a shop on Union St. I grew up around the shop, meeting a wonderful group of interior

designers along the way. He moved to a larger shop on Market St. in1962. After graduating from U.C.S.C. (B.A. in History 1978) I went to work with him to see if I wanted to make a career of it. I took over the business in 1987. With the changes in the design trade, and a desire to work closer to home, I moved the shop to San Rafael last year. I want to bring my knowledge and skills I learned working with the design trade to the general public here in Marin. From antiques to mid-century, through modern furniture, I can refurbish your upholstered furniture to last. New custom pieces, made to order, have alder wood frames, jute webbing, steel coil springs, hand tied, and down cushions. I carry many lines of fabric, can work with the customers own or help find fabric on line. Y Chiosso Bros., 58 Paul Dr., Ste. 15, San Rafael, CA 94901. 415-479-5444. www.chiossobros.com
