n January 1,2010, Healdsburg Lumber Company, Inc. purchased Marin’s leading window company, The Window Warehouse in Corte Madera. On January 1, 2011, Healdsburg Lumber Company, Inc. became HLC Incorporated and The Window Warehouse became Hudson Street Design of Marin. Most exciting of all, that same month, Hudson Street Design of Marin relocated to 3773 Redwood Highway in San Rafael (the old Breuner’s furniture store). The new location includes 16,000 square feet of showroom displays that feature a huge variety of windows, doors, and kitchen and bath vignettes that include the most current trends in cabinetry and plumbing fixtures. Hudson Street has also significantly expanded the hardware department with every imaginable style and finish of cabinet and door hardware. The showroom was designed to serve the consumer, interior designer, architect, and contractor. If you wish to see and touch the latest home products, then you are welcome to wander through the maze of displays. If you wish to sit privately with a consultant to develop the product specifications for your project, then there are quiet conference

rooms for your use. If the selection process is complete and you simply need to place an order, then there are eight highly experienced sales professionals who can process your purchase in a timely and accurate fashion. Finally, if you require a special order, service call or advice, then there is a separate service department that will address your needs. If you are looking for design assistance, Hudson Street Design has the expertise onhand with certified and licensed architects and kitchen/bath cabinet designers available to guide you through the entire process. With our showroom, distribution warehouse and operations now all under one roof, Hudson Street Design of Marin promises a smooth and responsive purchase experience. Hudson Street Design is supported by the HLC family of companies including Healdsburg Lumber Company, Gualala Building Supply, and Healdsburg Door & Sash Company—a pre-hung door and millwork manufacturer that furnishes top quality custom doors and millwork to the Northern California market. Over the last year, converting the staff, the systems, a31nd now the facility—has been an arduous task. We apologize to our customers who stuck with us through some difficult months. We have updated most of our systems, added to our staff, and now are located in a new (to us) and improved location. We are confident that we can provide the level of service and care that Marin County deserves. We hope to see you soon at the North Bay’s largest design showroom, Hudson Street Design of Marin. inda Applewhite is not your typical interior designer. She specializes in architectural design. This means her scope goes far beyond upholstery coverings and paint selection. Emphasizing and embellishing spaces to highlight and accentuate the natural architecture of a home is what really differentiates her from other designers. She works closely with architects and contractors to physically change spaces. “I’m a real advocate for homeowners. I encourage them to get what they want even if they are told their wishes are impossible—because quite often they are possible,” assures the enthusiastic Belvedere-based designer who loves the challenges that come with every project. The self-taught Applewhite has a few mantras she lives by. First, she stresses the importance of respect-

ing existing architecture. If clients are on a budget, she strongly recommends that they “stay within the footprint” of their home and work with the Linda Applewhite & Associates space they have. She also encourages clients to “live in their whole house.” Often there are lost spaces or underutilized rooms that she Learn how this designer is able to bring helped transform a into a floor plan 30-year-old Tiburon home with her strong design abilities. One of the first things Applewhite does with her

clients is to sit down with them to create a book or

10 “bible” they can both use throughout their project. Images of exteriors, interiors, lighting, fixtures, color preferences and more are included in this manual that provides a road map and gives Applewhite clear direction as to the clients’ preferences. “I listen and really learn what the client is looking for and then we work together to achieve it,” says Applewhite. A great example of a remodel that illustrates Applewhite’s broad design reach is pictured on these pages. This Tiburon house was built in 1968. The owners hired an architect to redesign the space to better fit their lifestyle. Their wish list included updating the house to give it a more contemporary look, increasing the usability and space in their kitchen— including the addition of an island—and creating a family room and dining room that had better flow and worked together in a more cohesive fashion. The fireplace was the first challenge. The original architect recommended the owners move it to the back of the dining room, which would result

in substantial loss of natural light and would block views. Instead, Applewhite suggested the fireplace remain where it was, and update it by removing the massive brick facade and framing the original box with sheetrock and plaster. These materials were much less costly than brick, and the whole facade was scaled down to better fit the house and then painted a charcoal gray. She also recommended exposing the flue, which created a stunning focal point for the room. A box for firewood storage sits discreetly along the left side of the refurbished fireplace and provides a practical and clean solution for indoor wood storage. Given the owners’ love for cooking, it was very important to them that the kitchen become a room that could really work for them. They wanted an island and a door to the outside patio for outdoor entertaining. They were told they would need to add another room at the cost of $150,000 in order to achieve these items. Applewhite had a more costeffective solution. By moving a wall back several feet they were able to gain enough space for an

island and room for a door to the outside. They lost a small amount of patio space, but their goal for a roomier, more functional kitchen was achieved. Finally, in the original floor plan the dining room and family room felt disconnected. Applewhite had a balcony removed, and in its place created a large opening connecting the two rooms. On either side they managed to fit a pantry and a laundry room. By using paint to emphasize the architecture—the beams and the fat archway added a dramatic feature to the home. They also carpeted the living room to distinguish it and add warmth. A small amount of space was lost in the family room, but it worked. “Linda really understood how we live—she took a holistic view to our remodel. We had never encountered that before,” explained the owner of the Tiburon property, who was also very impressed by her attention to color and help with placement of art in their home. Applewhite acknowledges that color is very personal and she enjoys helping clients express themselves by learning the shades, shapes and textures they like. “Paint is one of the most inexpensive ways to embellish rooms and emphasize architecture,” explains the designer, who is always

looking for ways for her clients to save money. “You get a lot of bang for your buck with paint.” Applewhite stresses the most important thing is for clients to get what they want. “Because Linda listens and understands our sensibility, we trust her completely,” say the owners of this remodel. Endorsements don’t get better than that. Y Linda Applewhite & Associates, Architectural Designer, 431 Golden Gate Avenue, Belvedere. 789-8871. www.lindaapplewhite.com

o you live in an older home with beautiful architectural moldings and details? Are you living in a Victorian that has lost its roots? Whether you live in an architectural treasure or just want your home to look like one, the easiest way to add value to your home is by creating a distinctive look with historic tile. This is an exciting time in the world of tile. Historic collections and famous artisan lines have become available to anyone wanting to make a rich architectural impact with their home’s design. Steve Cerami, CEO and Ceramic Tile Design President of Ceramic Tile Design, says, “What has me excited this year is that we now offer tile lines reflective of our country’s Classic tiles give historic roots. When more-than-modern results our customers realize that they can now use famous designs from Rookwood Pottery or Hearst Castle and bring U.S. born antiquity into their homes, it adds something much deeper than just a design statement.” Rookwood Pottery Rookwood Pottery dates back to 1880 and is known for producing fine ceramics and artisan tile. Their ceramics are sought after by collectors and pottery-lovers alike and are part of many museum collections around the world. colors, to accent your home. According to Therese Brown, Showroom Manager at Ceramic Tile Design, “It’s surprising to see that the 1925 designs still look modern and contemporary. It’s a sign of great design that these tiles look fresh, even in 2011.” Hearst Castle Collection Hearst Castle is renowned for its amazing architectural details and gorgeous use of tile. Several collections, based on the patterns and designs created by original architect Julia Morgan, are now available for use in private homes. Hearst’s Roman Pool Glass Collection is wonderful for updating existing spas and pools, or for creating a stunning new design. Other Hearst-inspired tiles include Painted and Carved Stone, Glass Mosaics, and Mercury Mirror Glass, all of which are available in colorways reflecting tapestry, plaster, upholstery and carpets used in the various rooms of the Hearst Castle. Arts and Crafts tiles The romance of the Arts and Crafts era can be seen in tiles produced by manufacturers like Trikeenan or Pratt & Larson. Organic themes of nature, produced in true period glazes, offer a timeless and wonderful accent for bathrooms, foyers, patios or fountains. Homeowners can also achieve custom color matches and reproductions of original tiles to replace broken pieces. Whether you live in an Arts and Crafts bungalow or a modern home, there are many great tile options to help restore your home’s beauty and distinction. Y Ceramic Tile Design, 846 W. With over 40 years of experience between them, the staff is there every step of the way assisting with the coordination of everything from appliances, tile choices, countertops, sinks and accessories. The Novato-based company offers a complimentary CAD design layout plan that includes onsite consultation and measuring. Along with providing fixtures, Novato Kitchens & Baths also offers custom cabinetry to their clients. This allows customers to select specific sizing, kinds of wood (including exotic woods), paint and even designer finishes including glazes and distressed looks for cabinets and other built-ins. Most importantly, it also allows for the customization of a space that can result in better functionality and utility. “Our

custom-made island is an especially wonderful addition to our kitchen,” raves customer Christina Waldeck, who describes partner Paul Price as the nicest person to work with. Not only is the talented team at Novato Kitchens & Baths friendly and helpful, they also bring years of experience to their respective roles. Mary Baron Smith, who holds a degree in architecture, has been working in design and architecture for nearly 30 years. She really listens to clients and helps them interpret their vision. Granite Transformations

Superior surfaces Transform your kitchen and bathroom with these exceptional stone products

E

very salesperson at Granite Transformations in Santa Rosa was a customer first—including owner Cynthia Mayo. Seven years ago Mayo had her own kitchen redone and was so impressed with the results she immediately called GT and said she wanted to go to work for them. It has now been five years since Mayo bought the North Bay franchise, and she remains more enthusiastic and committed to the company than ever. “Our customers love the fact that most of the surfaces are installed in one day, there’s no mess, and nothing goes into landfill, explains Mayo, who takes pride in the fact her company is green and recycles existing granite and doesn’t take any out of the ground. Specializing in kitchens and baths, Granite

Transformations provides engineered granite surfaces including their core product line, Trend Stone, which is comprised of 95 percent natural stone mixed with a specially formulated polymer that provides greater strength and durability than traditional granite. The surface is also heat, stain and scratch resistant and backed by the company’s limited lifetime warranty. The surface is adhered to existing surfaces with an epoxy product. Not only are the products exceptional, but new countertops are fabricated in the company’s nearby shop so that none of the time-consuming mess occurs in clients’ homes. Granite Transformations takes all of the necessary measurements and then builds surfaces, and installs them directly over the existing ones. It literally is a countertop that fits on top. There is no demolition necessary and often the installations can be completed in one to two days. From kitchens to bathrooms, fireplaces to bars, granite gives homes a sleek, sophisticated look. t’s becoming more and more popular; people are making the decision to replace their lawn with an artificial turf system. The clear advantages of doing this are numerous; however, the biggest reason yet, is how realistic and soft these next-generation turf products are. Going green is easier than ever when you install an artificial lawn. Not only is it good for the environment, but it’s easy to maintain, makes economic sense and looks and feels just like real grass. In fact, these new products from Heavenly Greens look so real you won’t believe your eyes. One thing to keep in mind is that not all artificial turf products are the same quality or manufactured with the same standards and materials. Heavenly Greens is the only distributor in Northern California that exclusively offers FieldTurf, the world’s leading artificial-turf system. There are many impostors but only one FieldTurf—don’t be fooled into using an inferior product. FieldTurf holds more patents than any other turf company and leads the industry in product innovation and turf sold. FieldTurf has recently introduced their new MaxxFlow product line specifically designed for the residential and commercial turf market. This new product has an exclusive proprietary backing system that’s 100 percent permeable, capable of draining up to 95 inches of water an hour and has a 100 percent recyclable lifespan. The revolutionary new backing, combined with the latest coating and tufting technologies bring environmental benefits unlike any other turf on the market— it’s even supported with a l15-year warranty. Heavenly Greens has been installing artificial turf systems in the Bay Area since the company started in 2001.
