n 2005, a group of “culinary adventurers” threw out a challenge to people from the Bay Area to eat within a 100-mile radius of their homes. The adventurers were four women who called themselves the Locavores and their story was featured prominently in the San Francisco Chronicle, Time Magazine and the New York Times. By 2007, the Oxford American Dictionary had chosen “locavore” as its Word of the Year, and a movement was born. Considering the deteriorating state of the planet, decreasing fossilfuel supplies, plus the growing rate of childhood obesity, consuming foods that are seasonal and produced within the eater’s region (aka foodshed) sparks a connection to what is on the plate, which has been lost in the global economy. According to Michael Pollan in his groundbreaking book The Omnivore’s Dilemma, much of what

Americans eat travels 1,500 miles from source to table. The cost to the planet in energy and damage in order to move that food has convinced folks across the country to hop on the locavore bandwagon. The increase in popularity and awareness of the movement has given rise to more sustainable produce, grass-fed beef, lamb and pork, pastured poultry and eggs and cheese makers galore. As the demand for local, organic, seasonal products has accelerated, markets, restaurants and farmers have risen to the occasion. Supporters are happy to vote for the local economy three times a day with their food dollars. Heck, there’s even a locavore app for the iPhone. The case for supporting locally produced food goes much further than saving energy. First and foremost, it tastes better, reflecting the earth it was raised on and the full ripeness achieved before being picked. Secondly, it supports biodiversity in the local ecosystem through sustainable agriculture practices. Finally, buying locally helps sustain the small family farm and the community surrounding it by keeping money in the neighborhood. We are blessed with being able to go right to the source for many locally grown or produced goodies. Luscious cheeses can be tasted and purchased, grass-fed meats chosen, oysters shucked, olive oil sampled, wine quaffed and farm-fresh vegetables and fruits bought right after they’ve been pulled from the earth. Going for a drive in the country to collect the bounty is part of the fun. Furthermore, several Marin—and nearby—farms offer “community supported agriculture”(CSAs). Consumers sign up for a box of farm products to be distributed on a regular basis, usually weekly or bi-monthly. Boxes are delivered to a central location for pickup or, sometimes, right to the buyer’s door. The benefits are that the farm has a guaranteed income and customers get a boxful of the freshest >4

Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese has recently opened The Fork, a cooking school at the creamery that enables visitors to learn some recipes, eat what they cooked and visit with the cows whose milk produces the classic Pt. Reyes blue cheese. At Drakes Bay, Hog Island and Tomales Bay, shoppers can buy, shuck and slurp their oysters within spitting distance of the bay where the oysters came from. Through Marin Organic, visitors can sign up for a hike or an event at one of their member farms (www.marinorganic.com). Restaurants in the county relish featuring locally grown products on their menus. From the Star Route Little Gems salad at Vin Antico to the juicy Rossotti Ranch veal at Stellina, Marin chefs set the table with bounty from the county. Whether dining in Novato or Sausalito, chances are you’ll ďŹ nd local products on the menu. Many chefs go out of their way to credit the farmers and ranchers for the amazing food they’ve created. It’s a powerful way to connect what is on the plate with its source. In Marinivore: Your Guide to Eating Local, Healthy and Green, we’ve gathered a wide array of farmers, ranchers, restaurants, farmers markets and all kinds of producers that contribute to the local foodshed of the county. As Marinites, we can take great pride in knowing that it is relatively easy to eat locally, creating community and celebration around every meal. ✞

t Mill Valley Market, they attribute their longevity to support from the community that they have supported all these decades. Starting with Grandpa Frank fighting the Mill Valley fire on July 4, 1929 (opening day for the store) to the current volunteer efforts of brothers David and Doug and their sons, the Canepa family believes in giving back. The market has a donation program called Shop and Give, which collects funds for local nonprofits. A percent of customers’ purchases are given to the organization of their choice, which, since 1992 has raised over $700,000. In addition, family members coach teams in town and they hire local youth for summer jobs. Hand in hand with being a good neighbor is the commitment to provide customers with local, artisanal products in the county. As an independent grocer, the market is able to buy from diminutive producers. Jars of ultra local honey can be found on the shelves alongside a large selection of granolas from Marin makers. There are multi-colored eggs from Woolly Ranch in Tennessee Valley as well as hot sauce, pasta, pesto, breads, cheeses and many more items from producers throughout the county. All over the store labels designate items from Mill Valley and Marin. Local, farm direct vegetables

bursts from baskets in the produce section, including crops from their own farm. For 15 years, the Canepa family has been growing organic produce at Mill Valley Market Farm in Glen Ellen. On four acres, Doug and his son Wesley grow lettuce, juicy tomatoes, fragrant basil and melons. The farm has apple and pear trees as well as a small olive grove, from which they press estate olive Doug Canepa at the Mill Valley Market Farm in Glen Ellen oil. Their goal is to get fresh produce from the farm to the market in the same day, a locavores dream. or more than 40 years, Good Earth has been committed to the health of their customers and sustainability of the community. As Marin’s oldest, independently owned organic and natural market, they continue to be a forerunner by using green technology, supporting local food producers and keeping customers well fed and informed. As a leader in the promotion of the local food movement, the shelves at the market are ďŹ lled with hundreds of items that are produced here in Marin. From milk to green cleaning products to tea and beer,

if it's made in the county, Good Earth will have it. The produce department is all organic and each item is labeled with origin and miles traveled. Additionally, there are signs with the names of local farms providing the freshest fruits and vegetables seasonally. Within the next months, they will be rolling out a new labeling system to provide customers with as much information as possible about the food in the store. Labels will include: raw, whole grain, gluten-free, vegan, Non-GMO, Fair Trade, AND Locally Produced. As an integral part of the community, Good Earth is a partner to many dierent social causes, using outreach and nonproďŹ t support. The store is a meeting place for local producers to share ideas. They provide scrip cards for area schools, are a member of Sustainable Fairfax and the Environmental Education Council of Marin as well as donators to the food pantry at San Geronimo's community center. They are collaborators in the Non-GMO Project and have an Organic School Lunch Program. In October Good Earth will move to its new location, at the gateway to Fairfax. The bigger space will allow for more selection and the design will utilize sustainable concepts. Plans include an organic cafe, bakery and juice bar with indoor and outdoor seating, expanded seafood and meat counters and an olive bar. More space means more room for what Good Earth does best: sustain customers, the community and the planet. raditions are reassuring. San Rafael Joe’s has been serving hungry diners for more than 60 years and is still going strong. Started by Italian immigrants Guido and Theresa Farina and Hector and Nancy Rubini, the restaurant is still run by their families. To be successful, the restaurant has kept up with trends while still honoring traditions. One such tradition is the house-made ravioli—plump pillows served with meatballs, meat sauce or Bordelaise sauce. Patrons rave about the chicken piccata on the dinner menu, a classic revisited. Local products like Point Reyes blue cheese graces the huge cobb salad and Bordenave's bread has been a staple at the restaurant for decades. Sunday brunch is a popular time to visit San Rafael Joe’s. The menu includes gems like pulled pork with soft polenta served alongside eggs cooked to order. Each weekday features a dierent lunch special, such as the grilled sole ciabatta sandwich on Thursdays. There is a full bar for classic cocktails as well as a wide range of wines from both California and Italy. Marinivores will be glad to see a Pacheco Ranch Cab on the list, a winery located in Novato. With a bright, spacious interior and live music four nights a week, San Rafael Joe’s is old-school comfort with a modern twist. ✞

t By controlling the seeds and only manufacturing Monsanto’s Roundup Ready corn, wheat, soy, etc., the diversity found in nature is being eliminated. A lack of biodiversity can lead to extinction and many varieties of produce have already disappeared. Stakeholders in the U.S. and Canada are uniting to bring about change to fight the hold corporations have on food. Grassroots anti-GMO activists helped pass measures in Marin and Mendocino counties, which ban the planting of genetically engineered crops. Other groups are working at certification and labeling so consumers know if they are getting food that contains GMOs. In 2005, a pair of natural food retailers—the Natural Grocery Company in Berkeley and Big Carrot Natural Foods in Toronto—came together to form the Non-GMO Project. According to the Non-GMO Project website, the mission was to create a consistent standard for what “non-GMO” meant throughout the food industry in North America. This would enable vendors to offer consumers an informed choice on the GMO risk in products. As the project gathered steam, the board of directors expanded to include representatives from all parties involved in the campaign: farmers, consumers, retailers and manufacturers. Marin’s own Good Earth Natural Foods took a leading role in the project. Today the group is working with Global ID Group, a leader in non-GMO testing and certification, and has created a verification program that began enrolling products in 2008 and putting a seal on those that met the standards. A growing list of approved items can be found at www.nongmoproject.org. Genetically modified organisms remain prevalent in our food system. With increased attention on the hazards, help from groups like the NonGMO Project and grassroots activism working on legislation to ban genetically engineered crops, consumers can now make informed decisions about what products are healthy, nutritious and GMO-free. ✾

it takes you, the villager, buying locally, to make it all work

Hi. My name is Brigitte. I’m the 2nd from the right. I’d like to introduce you to a few of my friends. Starting from the left, meet Stacy Carlsen from Marin County Department of Agriculture, Nancy Scolari from Marin Resource Conservation District, Bob Berner from Marin Agricultural Land Trust, Adrienne Baumann from Marin Organic, Dominic Grossi from Marin County Farm Bureau, then there’s me, Brigitte Moran from Agricultural Institute of Marin, and David Lewis from University of California Cooperative Extension. WHAT CAN YOU DO?

When you sit down to dine at a local restaurant, ask “Where does your meat come from, how was it raised?” When you buy coffee at a cafe, ask “Did a local dairy produce the milk?” Share how Marin is the dairy capital of the Bay Area. When you grocery shop, ask buyers to source from local farms. For you and yours at home, shop your local farmers market. Join our village in a local food revolution.

hose of us who have the pleasure of living in Marin County enjoy world-class cuisine, wine and miles of beautiful rolling hillsides leading to stunning coastal backdrops. Much of what enables us to keep this stunning scenery intact can be attributed to our hardworking dairy farmers. Without their tireless eorts to keep their farms functional and thriving, along with support from consumers like you, our picturesque backdrops might be ďŹ lled with tract homes and shopping centers. Located just across the Marin County line in rural Petaluma, for three generations Clover Stornetta Farms has been committed to supporting local dairy farmers. Clover works with these dairies to produce the cleanest, fresh pasteurized, local milk that we then deliver to your local restaurants and grocery stores. A favorite among both gourmet chefs and consumers, Clover is a family-owned dairy company that places high value on the concepts of sustainability, exceptional quality, the humane treatment of animals and educating consumers on where their food comes from. The milk we produce comes from contented cows who have the good fortune to graze along the Marin hillsides and coastlines people come from all over the world to see. We take pride in preserving these stunning Marin County landscapes for generations to come. ✞

Oakland) and one in San Francisco (Stonestown). AIM's mission is to educate the public about the nutritional and economic benefits of buying locally grown food directly from farmers, and to connect and support communities and agriculture. AIM is committed to educating the public through a number of different avenues in addition to the on-the-ground experiential learning that happens every week at AIM's farmers markets. AIM's Diggin' the Farmers Market Tours welcomes more than 1,000 tour participants to the Thursday Marin Farmers Market, ranging from local K-12 students to regional Rotary Clubs to visiting conference groups. Their Farm to Fork Program actively recruits and supports institutional customers such as hospitals, restaurants, schools and grocery stores in their transition to sourcing food from regional farmers. AIM is also proud to accept CalFresh, also known as food stamps, enabling people of limited income to benefit from having access to locally grown produce. Looking ahead, AIM is actively working toward the creation of a pavilion dedicated to local agriculture, a community hub where local farmers, ranchers, specialty food purveyors, artisans, agricultural organizations and the public will come together under one roof. very Thursday and Sunday hundreds of regional farmers, food purveyors and artisans, and thousands of consumers descend on the Marin Civic Center parking lot for a twice-weekly celebration of the best of what our regional foodshed has to offer. But even the most die-hard Marinivore may not be familiar with the organization behind the curtain—the one that makes the magic happen. Meet the Agricultural Institute of Marin, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit public-benefit organization based in San Rafael. Yes it can be a mouthful—you can call them AIM if you like. Previously known as Marin Farmers Markets, AIM represents over 500 regional California farmers, food purveyors and artisans and operates eight farmers markets in the Bay Area, four in Marin County (Marin Civic Center, Fairfax and Novato), three in Alameda County (Grand Lake, Hayward and

urricane Katrina refugee Michelle Elmore acquired the Koee Klatch in Fairfax, serving a mix of classic diner standbys and favorites from N’awlins, using local, organic products. The sunny space is warmed by butter yellow walls and large portraits of Mardi Gras Indians. Breakfast brings the lightest beignets this side of the Mississippi with cups of a special organic blend of fair trade coee combining French roast and chicory. Fresh eggs from Red Hill Ranch are used on the Lobster Eggs Benedict and bread from the Fat Angel Bakery next door is turned into toast. The lunch menu oers classics like a soft shell crab BLT and fried green tomato sandwich. Local oysters from Drakes Bay are used in po ’boys, omelets and a divine salad with spinach and bacon. Mary’s organic chicken avors the spicy gumbo and the lovely Queen Salad. Top it o with an organic Tara ice cream milkshake or a piece of homemade sweet potato pie. Dinner is served Friday and Saturday nights and, in addition to the regular menu, features one classic New Orleans dish each night. With fresh, local ingredients and authentic southern fare, the Hummingbird is THE place to taste the avors of the Big Easy in Marin. Âœ

fter years in the music business, Tony Tutto planted his passion for pizza in a cozy, bright space in Mill Valley. With a large deck for catching rays and outstanding music that gets your groove going, the restaurant is a welcome place to chow down on some of the most innovative pizzas in Marin. Tony gets his inspiration from what's in season. “The farmers market on Thursday and Sunday mornings is like going to church or heaven in a sense. Instead of 16 it's like having a box of 120 crayons to choose from!â€? he says. His mushroom pizzas are lip-smacking good. Combinations like butternut squash with sage and smoked mozzarella, or a vegan concoction called “Garden of Love Lightâ€? with arugula, pine nuts, herbs and Meyer lemon, reect the owner's artistic sensibility. All ingredients are vegetarian and mostly organic, and half the pizzas are vegan. He only oers a daily special if he is in love with it: “These pizzas are my creations, like songs, and are meant to be experienced as they are, without additions or substitutions.â€? Just like a good song, the melody of Tony Tutto's pizzas haunts you night and day, keeping happy Marinivores coming back for more. ✞ Tony Tutto Pizza, Address: 246 E. ook no further than the Tiburon Grill for modern comfort food served in an elegant, friendly atmosphere. With a variety of seating choices from sofas by the fireplace to a communal table for socializing to private seats on the sunny patios, TG is the perfect place for Marin style get-togethers. The menu is varied with plenty of fresh leafy salads, a wide range of sandwiches and classic entrees as well as a list of appetizers that are perfect for sharing. Just right for spring is the Grilled Globe Artichoke with Lemon Aioli, while the succulent Braised Pork Nachos are ideal for hungry carnivores. The Chopped BLT Salad is topped with Pt. Reyes Blue Cheese, adding a nice tang to that classic combination. One of the more unusual selections is an Ahi Banh Mi Sandwich featuring seared ahi served Vietnamese-style with spicy vegetables on a French roll. The wine list has several choices from Larkspur's Pey Marin Vineyard and the restaurant carries Marin Brewing Co.'s Dirty Blonde Ale. Yelpers are abuzz about the Happy Hour at Tiburon Grill. Offered every day from 4-7 p.m. and all day Sunday, many menu items are half off and beer, wine and martinis are discounted. At Tiburon Grill, fresh seasonal ingredients come together to offer delicious, contemporary cuisine. ✾ Tiburon Grill, 1651 Tiburon Blvd., Tiburon. 435-5996. www.tiburongrill.com.
