O
n this 55th anniversary of the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival, I think it’s more important than ever to recognize and thank the community, individuals, and businesses that have helped the festival not only survive in these difficult economic times, but also to thrive. The generous gifts of time, talent, and funds are what make the festival we have today possible. First, a very special thank you to Michael Osborne and Michael Osborne Design who designed our festival image both this year and last. And to Spectrum Lithographic who, through Michael Osborne Design, is donating all of the litho foil printing of our fantastic Art Poster. The Pacific Sun has been our major media sponsor for many years. They not only donate advertising but create this wonderful program. Wells Fargo has sponsored the Children’s Grove this year, and Bank of Marin made a generous contribution to our general operations fund. Pacific Union sponsored our banner in the downtown plaza (a first for us this year). KRON 4, The Marin Independent Journal and Marin Scope papers all support this fabulous festival. Acqua Hotel hosts our monthly committee meetings. Graphicon and One Globe Publishing did an amazing job updating our website. The Mill Valley School District makes parking for the artists at Old Mill School possible and Mill Valley Parks and Recreation allows us to have the festival in beautiful Old Mill Park. These are just a few examples of the kind of community support our festival receives, and requires, in order to be as fabulous as it is. It is only with this kind of support that the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival is possible. My deepest gratitude goes out to our Executive Director, Steve Bajor, and our Artist Liaison and Publicist, Erma Murphy, who, through their actions and dedication, show that they truly love the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. And let’s not forget our community volunteers, our hard-working committee members, and our Board members who Thank you, have all helped make this festival what it is today. thank you, And finally, a big Thank You to all of you for thank you! attending and to all our great artists for sharing their unique and quality art with us! This festival is truly a one-of-a-kind festival and I am proud to be a part of it. With this level of support and commitment we will keep the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival going strong! —Sarah Suloff, Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival Board President

Musings from the Festival Executive Director
I
was lucky enough to have been raised up in Mill Valley. That experience included the magic ’50s and ’60s in this town. It was a haven for liberals, artists, musicians and poets. It was the most creative and inspirational environment imaginable. From this Golden Age “goo” the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival was envisioned and founded. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival is perhaps the oldest Arts Festival in the Western United States. Fifty-five years later we are all still guided and challenged by that heritage. The Festival is very much today what it was then. It is still a unique opportunity for our artists and craftspeople to show off and market their works and the Mill Valley community to participate, support and attend their very own exceptional cultural event. The difference today is a new, professional and up-to-date approach. This is reflected on many levels from our publicity and advertising strategies to our new website and volunteer development program. This is totally due to the dedication and skills and resources of our 2011 We all hope Committee and Board of Directors. you enjoy the Festival Our Volunteer Committee and Board of Directors, result of our made up of local artists and involved residents, design, plan and produce the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival. This efforts. management structure is unique in this world of cookiecutter “Any City” Art & Wine Festivals. This group has brought our community and the greater Bay Area a spectacular event for 55 years. The Festival for 2011 is again the direct result of their efforts. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival attracts over 140 fine visual artists and craftspeople, many local and some from as far as Hawaii and New York. Our Festival is rated one of the top 10 fine arts and craft shows in the Northwest. It attracts thousands of art lovers and buyers from all over the Bay Area. The Festival provides exposure and a livelihood for the many fine exhibitors who display and offer their works for sale. Equally important, the Festival showcases our wealth of local preforming artists, many of national stature. It provides them important visibility and the opportunity to perform for old and new friends on their home turf. In addition, the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival helps supports many community art projects in the public schools and provides important promotion and fundraising opportunities for many of our local nonprofit organizations. —Steve Bajor, Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival Executive Director

he 2011 Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival Emerging Artist Scholarship was awarded to Tam High graduate Emily Deng at the Tamalpais High School senior awards night May 31 in Ruby Scott Gym. Lynne Klein, past president of the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival and Tamalpais High Fine Arts teacher, presented the award. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival awarded Emily $500 toward her college education. Emily will be attending UC San Diego this fall where she will continue her studies in photography. Emily won the award based on the exceptional Charlotte Passot aptitude she showed in photography. “Photography is my passion because it allows me to draw attention to the beauty in our world, and show others what I notice that may go unnoticed. A photograph perfectly captures a moment in time, preserving the life and emotions of the subjects.” The junior artist selected this year was Charlotte Passot. Charlotte’s focus is Drawing and Painting. She will receive her monetary award at the Fall Arts Festival. Samples of Emily’s and Charlotte’s work will Emily Deng be shown at the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival in Old Mill Park as part of Tam High’s Student Exhibit. The Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival committee is very excited to have implemented this scholarship program in 2010 and plans to continue the awards every year to one senior and one junior who excel in the arts. Students interested in being considered for the award are required to fill out an application and submit samples of their work to be juried.

Michael Osborne created poster design for 2011
L
ast year’s promotional poster, created by award winning graphic designer Michael Osborne, was so popular, the festival committee approached him again in hopes he would create another image that was equally bright, fun, artsy and eye-catching. He said YES and they were very pleased with the result. His creative use of words is playful and engaging. The Festival Committee wants to thank Michael for his generous donation to the 55th Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival.
