Novato Chamber of Commerce Presents

A 31-Year Neighborly Tradition:

Welcome

S

By Coy Smith, NCOC CEO

ince 1983, the Novato Chamber of Commerce has hosted the Novato festival – the largest free street festival in Marin County. We don’t do it alone. The Chamber staff and board thank the generous support of our sponsors at all levels, our many volunteers, wineries, Moylan’s Brewery, the musicians filling two great stages all weekend long, Eckerstrom Productions, which fills the artist and food vendor booths; and, of course, the 80,000 Novato, Marin and Bay Area neighbors who attend. This Novato tradition serves to promote our great city and provides the Chamber, Novato’s largest business organization, with the ability to represent the business community citywide as well as throughout Marin County. Proceeds support our members and affiliate organizations through business education seminars, economic pulse-point efforts, Leadership Novato, candidate and policy forums, best management practices in business and Novato’s tourism marketing. We’re proud to help strengthen the area’s economy – our number one priority. Thank you!

t wouldn’t be summer without the Novato Festival of Art, Wine & Music on the horizon. This is the 31st year the event has been presented by the Novato Chamber of Commerce. Some 75,000 people attend the annual affair, featuring more than 200 arts and crafts booths, a premium wine garden, food vendors, microbrews, a children’s area, and fun for the whole family. The free festival is set for Saturday, June 14, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Spanning two miles, the event continues along Grant Avenue downtown between Redwood Boulevard and Seventh Street. It is anchored by two stages — one at each end. This year Hopmonk Tavern will be sponsoring the Seventh Street location and will be presenting many of the acts that have been gracing their nightclub stages since it opened. Headliners will include: Eric Martin from Mr. Big; Afrolicious, with its funky electronic sound; and Volker Strifler, wellknown blues guitarist. Other headlining big names include: Crystal Bowersox, Megan Slankard, Jazz Mafia, Lacy J. Dalton and Frobeck. Also see Stefanie Keys, The Deadlies, Jesse Brewster, Sol Horizon, E Minor & The Dirty Diamonds, James Harman, Steep Ravine, Lumanation, CCB, One Grass Two Grass Red Grass Bluegrass, Steve Seskin & Sinclair, Keeley Valentino, Brittany Bexton and Amy Wigton. Find something for everyone in the family at the vendor booths, including a wide assortment of jewelry, outdoor garden art, surf signs, soap, fairy dresses, custom wine glasses, paintings and photography, dog and cat bandanas and frisbees, and all sorts of clothing including Aloha shirts, yoga clothing and more. A selection of wineries will pour their varietals including La Playa. Jacuzzi will

be sharing a 2012 Barbera (red), 2011 Primitivo (red), 2012 Arneis (white), and 2012 Giuseppina (white chardonnay. Cline will have its 2012 Marsanne Roussanne (white) and 2012 Cashmere (red). Cambridge California Cellars will pour a 2012 Cambridge Meritage, 2012 Cambridge Chardonnay, 2012 Cambridge & Sunset “Grass Cutter” and a 2013 Cambridge & Sunset “The Clippings”. A new drink booth will be near the Redwood Stage with all natural margaritas donated by sponsor Laughing Glass Cocktails. Locally brewed beer from Moylan’s Brewery will also be available. The purchase of a commemorative wine or beer glass for $6 is required to drink the alcoholic beverages purchased at the festival. Bank of Marin, Marin Roto-Rooter and Moylan’s Brewery are sponsoring the 2014 commemorative glasses. New to the festival food scene this year is formaggio — a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich. If you haven’t heard the grilled cheese has earned a new ranking as one of the most popular foods being puffed up to an elegant sandwich. Other menu choices will include: turkey legs, hamburgers, chicken skewers, fried rice, crab cake sandwiches, lobster rolls, hand-dipped gourmet corndogs, Philly cheese steaks and sausages. To whet your thirst non-alcoholic alternatives will include: Italian ice, smoothies, lemonade and more. Whole Foods will be serving fresh juices and coconut water. Tons of fun for the young ones can be found at The Smiling Turtle Kiddies’ Park sponsored by Novato Pediatric Dentistry, and throughout the entire festival. New this year is a giant pirate ship. For more information about the music line-up, or to volunteer, go to www.novatoartwinemusic.com. For more information, call 415-897-1164. Also find the festival on Facebook.

MUSIC SCHEDULE

Making music at the Novato festival By Shelley Shepherd-Klaner

Y

ears ago, Novato Chamber of Commerce volunteers debated changing the name “Novato Art & Wine Festival” to include “Music.” It was undeniable that music had become a core attraction of the festival, drawing thousands to see acts like Montrose, Lisa Loeb, Elvin Bishop and Jesse Colin Young play downtown Novato. Today, live music continues as a strong draw for the festival, with bands banging on the doors to play, and music lovers wanting to know who the headliners will be this year. Instead of one stage, there are two, anchored on either end of Grant Avenue.

This year, HopMonk Tavern is the Seventh Street stage sponsor and brings popular entertainers from its three club venues to play Novato. Read more about these great performers.

Eric Martin is ‘Big’ Returning this year is Eric Martin. Beginning his career in the ‘70s with a band called 415, the group broke up after a tour with ZZ Top and Martin continued along with solo efforts, then teamed up with a band to form Mr. Big. After Mr. Big’s 2002 farewell tour, along with six albums, and numerous hits including Somewhere in the Middle, Martin continued to record his own sound with a focus on rock roots.

with generations to come.” Not only is Minden, Nevada-based storyteller Bj Fulmer a craftsman of words; he creates Campfire Legends leather handcrafts. Full-sized hides are cut to design specifications, then punched and sewed entirely by hand, one at a time. They become the “Campfire Story Book,” personal journals, artist sketch books, notebooks, High Plain Drifter Notebook, bracelets, wallets, bookcovers and more. rtist Joanne Robinson was surrounded by a muse of color while growing up in the

tropics. “My love of color developed while early on while I was surrounded by the vivid hues of the Caribbean,” Robinson recalls. “I painted many subjects, but when I painted my first rose, my obsession began. “I am fascinated by the way light and shadow play across the petals of flowers, especially the rose. I immerse myself in the color, light, shadow and form of each petal and enjoy the smiles that my paintings elicit from the viewer. “I work with photographs and life, and carefully draw a detailed sketch on canvas at my studio,” she explains. “Next, I create a grisaille (tonal underpainting) before meticulously building up layers of oil paint, working

ou know when I was very young I remember sitting around the campfire, spellbound, listening to my Grandfather tell stories about his journeys as a young boy riding bareback though the Ozark Mountains late at night.” These memories are what Bj Fulmer credits in his current journey of campfire legends and leather craftsman. Stories such as: The Headless Dog, The Grave Digger, and the Lantern were stories Fulmer’s grandpa told with great expression and passion. He would have everyone sitting on the edge of their seats, no matter how many times he had told them before. He was a true storyteller and I am sure that is why I have developed the love of storytelling as well. “And,” says Fulmer, “it is my desire to instill that passion in you. I hope that you enjoy these stories, do not be afraid to make them yours and share them

B on each petal separately. Painting flowers is the key to my private garden that I can enjoy and share with others.” Robinson’s work is on display and for sale at the 31st annual Novato Festival of Art, Wine & Music. Her canvases can also be viewed at the Blackhawk Gallery in Danville, and online at: jlorobinsonart.com.

orn and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and having worked 30 years at Ford Motor Company, Joe Shaw retired and decided to pursue his interest in airbrushing. Joe used a lot of his time to explore and intensify his artistic abilities. He also networks with other artists as a member of the Pinole Artisans of California. One day in Monterey, Joe saw several murals that looked like photographs.

A former muralist himself, Joe was interested in the techniques used and took a basic class on airbrushing and the airbrush as a tool. Only in the past couple of years has he been creating work so detailed and unique that it instantly captures one’s attention. Come by Joe’s booth at the Novato Festival of Art, Wine & Music, downtown Novato on Grant Ave., June 14 and 15. You can see more of his work at www.JShawpaints.com.

The Kids Area includes guided art projects, train rides, climbing wall and bounce houses, jumbo slides, water ball wading pool and a dunk tank. Novato Fire Protection District, Novato Police Department, Novato Disposal and other public agencies offer fun and educational activities geared to lessons in safety and conservation for children and adults. Our younth and young-at-heart racecar drivers find slot car racing challenges their reaction times. Lemonade, smoothies and frozen yogurt help kids beat the heat. Select artists specialize in children’s books, toys, gifts, clothing and accessories.

Greening the Festival

I

n 2005, the Festival committee explored strategies to reduce the event’s carbon footprint and raise awareness. Our early measures incorporated and continue to rely on: • recycling glass, cardboard and plastics with sorting services • bike valet parking, courtesy of Novato Theater, with rack rentals from the Marin Bicycle Coalition powering the Seventh Street Stage with solar panels, courtesy of PG&E • printing promotion and publicity materials on recycled paper whenever possible • In 2011, we expanded our greening efforts with a pilot food composting collection and we hope to take it Festival-wide this year. Efforts to become carbon-neutral continue.

Crystal Bowersox: more than an Idol If you are the fan of a popular TV talent show, Crystal Bowersox is a name that probably sounds familiar. While the Idol competition helped launch her, juggling children and Type One diabetes since age six, Bowersox’s career definitely hasn’t followed a normal route. “My career is really still in its infancy,” she admits. Bowersox has performed with Alanis Morrisette and BB King and her mix of blues, country, folk and rock makes her young voice a testament to her talent. All That for This was released in 2013.
