with more fanfare than ever. Fairgoers travel from miles around to attend the annual event that signals the kick off of summer with more than 200 arts and crafts booths, live music on two stages all day long, food vendors, a premium wine garden, children’s area and fun for the whole family. The free annual festival is set for Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, June 9, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Presented by the Novato Chamber of Commerce, the event continues at its Grant Avenue location, downtown between Redwood Boulevard and 7th Street. With a healthy group of volunteers (see page 7), the committee creates a homegrown festival. A selection of wineries will pour their varietals including the newly launched local Trek Winery and locally brewed beer from Moylan’s Brewery will also be available. The purchase of a commemorative wine or beer glass for $6 is required to drink the alcoholic beverages purchased at the festival. Bank of Marin, Moylan’s Brewery and Randall Brothers Automotive sponsor the 2013 commemorative glasses. Familiar fair food will abound with treats such as corn dogs, barbecue oysters, ribs, crab-cakes, gyros, sausages, calamari and teriyaki chicken. Whole Foods will be serving tacos. (see page 7) The arts and crafts booths will feature vendors from all over the country, displaying fine arts, home décor, jewelry, pottery and more. Find trinkets for your pooch, toe rings and fun seaside items for the home. There is something for everyone. Tons of fun for the young ones can be found at The Novato Pediatric Dentistry Kiddies’ Park and throughout the entire festival including a train ride, art projects, a climbing wall, motorized mini race cars, a giant slide, multiple bounce houses, a puppet show and more. New this year the kids will enjoy the Water-Ballerz, giant balls children can roll around in. (see Map on pages 6 & 7) But the highlight of the festival is always the wide selection of top musical entertainment and this year is no exception with major stars such as the Tubes, Davey Pattison, Tender Mercies, The Americans, Metal Shop, Luv Planet and more. (see pages 8 to 10 for bios and pictures of all of the performers). No pets or smoking are allowed at the event due to Novato city ordinances. Bike valet parking is also available and being provided by volunteers from the Novato Theater. The green element at the festival has been growing each year. There will also be recycling containers and full-service composting provided by the Conservation Corps North Bay. Novato Chamber and service group volunteers largely staff the festival. Volunteers are always needed. The event is the primary fundraiser for the chamber, allowing the organization to offer its services to the community. For more information about the festival, or to volunteer, call 415-897-1164. The festival can also be found on Facebook or at www.novatoartwinemusic.com

NOVATO FESTIVAL OF ART, WINE & MUSIC
MUSICAL MAYHEM
IN
MUSIC ARTISTS DOWNTOWN NOVATO
By Shelley Shepherd Klaner
The Novato Festival of Art, Wine & Music didn’t always have the word “music” as part of its title; it was the simply the Novato Art & Wine Festival. Some folks still call it that — since old habits die hard — but as the event became one of the premiere festivals for bands to be seen and heard, the music became such an important element that planners at the Novato Chamber of Commerce decided it was appropriate to add “music” to the name. Big stars such as Montrose, Commander Cody, Lisa Loeb, Robben Ford, Chuck Prophet and Tommy Castro have performed as well as dozens more. The music became such an integral part of the festival that a second stage was erected on the opposite end of the event at 7th Street. It started as a smaller entertainment stop with the stage on Redwood Boulevard billed as the Main Stage, but that quickly changed. Now both stages offer an equally stellar line-up appealing to every musical taste — from blues to country to jazz to good oldfashioned rock ‘n’ roll the festival provides something for everyone.
MUSIC ARTISTS
when he would go solo. “The challenge with a solo career is that I’m known for my work with Gamma and Robin Trower, both rock acts, but I have never really considered myself just a rock singer,” he said. Pattison has also played on jazz, country, pop, blues and soul albums. Pattison’s solo work reflects his broad background. His solo discs include Pictures and Mississippi Nights. (Sunday, June 9, 4:45 to 6 p.m., Redwood Stage)
TENDER MERCIES
You can’t mention Tender Mercies without mentioning the Counting Crows since two of the members Dan Vickrey (vocals, guitar) and Jim Bogios (vocals, drums) are part of that mega band. Tender Mercies also includes Patrick Winningham (vocals, guitar) and Kurt Stevenson (vocals, bass). Counting Crows fans will recognize songs from the Tender Mercies including Four White Stallions, Wiseblood and Mercy. The band originally formed 28 years ago and played under different names throughout the years. When Vickery was asked to become guitarist for the Counting Crows, fate stepped in when his songs were added to the Crows’ stage show. The Tender Mercies reformed in 2012 and have a self-titled CD. (Sunday, June 9, 1:45 to 2:30 p.m., Redwood Stage)
THE AMERICANS
THE TUBES FEATURING FEE WAYBILL
The 2013 festival continues the tradition of hosting big-named entertainment with The Tubes. The San Francisco band’s 1975 debut album The Tubes, which included the mega hit White Punks on Dope, propelled them to fame. Two bands originally from Phoenix merged in the Bay Area with a line-up that remained stable for a decade including vocalist Fee Waybill. That first album included another one of their big hits What Do You Want From Life. The Tubes stage shows range from the imaginative to the outrageous and also includes many of their other chart toppers: Don’t Touch Me There, She’s a Beauty, Talk to You Later and more. After seven albums, Waybill left the band only to return in 1993. The Tubes continue to be a rock ‘n’ roll favorite to those who grew up in the ‘70s and ‘80s and continue to captivate with their stage performances ripe with satire, politics and excess. (Saturday, June 8, 5:45 to 7 p.m., Redwood Stage)
The Americans perform original rock ‘n’ roll rootein rural blues and traditional folk music. Formed in Los Angeles in 2010, they have toured all over the country. The band, which recently appeared on the David Letterman Show, includes Patrick Ferris (vocals and guitars); Zac Sokolow (guitar, banjo, violin): Tim Carr (drums); and Jake Faulkner (bass). The band performs The Parting Glass on the upcoming film Inside Llewyn Davis. The soundtrack also includes Justin Timberlake and Marcus Mumford. The Americans song Sweet and Low is on the album Sons of Rogue’s Gallery, which also features new music from Keith Richards, Tom Waits and Dr. John. This is a two-disc collection of pirate and seafaring songs produced by Johnny Depp. The band’s drummer Tim Carr is from Novato. (Saturday, June 8, 1:30 to 2:15 p.m., Redwood Stage)
METAL SHOP
DAVEY PATTISON
Davey Pattison was invited to come to the U.S. by the late concert performer Bill Graham to front the band Gamma being formed by rock guitarist Ronnie Montrose. He co-wrote many of the band’s hits with Montrose including Thunder & Lightning, No Tears, Razor King and Voyager. Gamma toured with AC/DC, ZZ Top, Journey and more. After Gamma split up, Pattison joined Robin Trower, where he played on the band’s albums Passion, Take What You Need and In the Line of Fire. With the release of the Best of Gamma album in 1992, Pattison reunited with Montrose to tour and support the new recording. For years Pattison was asked 8 NOVATO FESTIVAL OF ART, WINE & MUSIC 2013 PUBLISHED BY THE PACIFIC SUN

EOFF GRAHAM was born in Berkeley, CA, and has been drawing and painting since he was two years old. He has a Master’s Degree in Egyptology from Yale University and has studied the technical aspects of painting and selling fine ceramic serving pieces at Cinnabar Ceramics for many years. He believes that he is now producing his finest work, inspired by the themes and vegetation of Italy, the homeland of his mother’s family. A HIGH STANDARD OF DYEING
estival goers of all ages love the youth activities at Novato’s Festival of Art, Wine and Music. The Kids Area includes guided art projects, train rides, climbing wall and bounce houses, jumbo slides, water ball wading pool and a dunk tank. The Novato Fire Protection District, Novato Police Department, Novato Sanitary District and other public agencies offer fun and educational activities geared toward lessons in safety and conservation for children and their parents. Our young and young-at-heart racecar drivers find slot car racing challenges their reaction times. Lemonade, smoothies and funnel cakes, ice cream and frozen yogurt help kids beat the heat. Select artists specialize in children’s books, toys, gifts, clothing and accessories.
GREENING THE FESTIVAL
In 2005, the Festival committee explored strategies to reduce the event’s carbon footprint and raise awareness. • Recycling glass, cardboard and plastics with sorting services provided by Conservation Corps of the North Bay • Bike valet parking, courtesy of Novato Theater, Inc., with rack rentals from the Marin Bicycle Coalition. • Printing promotion and publicity materials on recycled paper whenever possible In 2011, we expanded our greening efforts with a pilot food composting collection and we hope to take it Festival-wide this year.
When I create my designs and color schemes, I choose colors that blend and work well together. This has always been the focus of my art and what hopefully makes me stand out from others. I currently have over 10 designs and 45 color schemes that I work and match with on a regular basis with more concepts on the horizon.
Efforts to become carbon-neutral continue...
BEER

one.” Choose a pint from Moylan’s Brewery - from Pale Ale to Stout to Hefeweizen. Moylan’s is Novato’s own award-winning micro brewery and the NOVATO CHAMBER’s 2012 Large Business
Although I have created these set designs and color choices, what you are getting is truly oneof-a-kind wearable art. But when held up two feet away, one can then identify the unique patterns and differences in each shirt or pants. There are never two identical. That’s why this art form is so cool. ––Jonathan Kates

FOOD BOOTHS
hat’s a festival without food?! For some, the Festival is about kabobs, corn dogs, souvlaki, Philly steaks, soft ice cream and curly fries. Then, there are the gourmet artisan stands, featuring restaurateurs with menus complete with tri-tip and artichokes, bar-be-cued oysters from the second-year Green Lantern Catering company; calamari, pulled pork sandwiches and veggie wraps. Ethnic foods include Indian from Spice Affairs and Greek cuisine. Country Lemonade quenches the thirst and is served throughout the two-day festival.
