ur fine assortment of enchanted literary tales, myths and truths wouldn’t be possible without our team of dedicated storytellers: Molly Oleson, Lily O’Brien, Janet Alexander, Matthew Stafford, Janelle Moncada and Stephanie Powell. Goldilocks wouldn’t have been able to eat her porridge and Snow White was, thankfully, able to avoid that poison apple, thanks to George’s Nightclub, which provided divine food, drink and locale for our photo shoot. Our princesses and headless horsemen were able to channel fables from the past, thanks to the legendary wardrobe of costumes provided by The Belrose, and styling by Katie Rice Jones, Chelsea Dederick, Janelle Moncada and Jessica Armstrong. Our storybook characters—also known as the people behind Marin’s best businesses—came alive, thanks to our magnificent photographer, Robert Vente. Pinocchio wouldn’t have to lie about the contributions of tech guy Matt Bearson and singer extraordinaire, Noah Griffin. You don’t need seven dwarves when you have a design team of three talented, darling ones, who artistically turned lore to life: Phaedra Strecher, Jessica Armstrong and Chelsea Dederick. Thank you to the Queen Bee and her worker bees, who brought the magic beanstalk home: Meredith Griffin, Rozan Donals and Danielle McCoy. Thank you to our Mother Goose, Cecily Josse, who made sure that everything went smoothly. And a big thanks to the Big Bad Wolf who made this all possible, Bob Heinen. Thank you to all! Well, if these two aren’t proof that vaccinations are bad...
››LETTERS Plum out of luck Thank you Sadja Greenwood and Steve Heilig, for a thoughtful, thorough and patient article about the importance and validity of vaccinations [“Please Vaccinate,” March 20]. The University of Google contingent will probably fire off another round of snarky letters in response, but with luck the Sun editorial staff will have mercy on their readership and choose not to publish them. While they’re at it, maybe they’ll beat back the recent outbreak of artless poetry.
Stanton Klose, San Rafael
about us not addressing him as doctor, is this why he had not signed his letters with his title?
Larry Minikes, San Rafael
Hates reruns So now the Sun makes cover stories out of reprinted editorials that previously ran in the Bolinas Hearsay News and the Point Reyes Light? “Please Vaccinate”? How about, please do some actual reporting? Or was this a joke?
Glen Redman, San Rafael
Yes, but they’re first in spittoons ...
A safe and reliable defense against the scourge of disease?
He’s not a doctor, and neither am I—but hear me out ... Thank you for bringing coherence and sanity to the vaccination debate, “Please Vaccinate—A professional and personal plea.” Dr. Sandja Greenwood and Steve Heilig performed a tremendous community service in this regard. We should all be eternally grateful for their efforts. Quoting from the above-mentioned article, when I responded on Feb. 20 to Don Harte’s disjointed letter, it was because I felt he is one of the “self-appointed advocates with little or no scientific background.” This is exactly what I hoped the Sun would do—counter those quoting “The University of Google.” I am not a scientist, nor am I qualified to discuss the scientific merits of the vaccination debate. But purely from a common sense layperson’s perspective, I do recognize gross medical misinformation when I see it. While he vainly attempts to respond to multiple critics, Harte’s response on March 5 is confusing and difficult to follow as it goes off in several directions. He complains, “In decent society, chiropractors are referred to as ‘Dr.’” What an odd statement considering he signed his two letters neither Dr. nor D.C. As a so-called professional in the health and wellness field, making unqualified medical statements puts not only Harte’s credibility into question, it may potentially cross the line between personal opinion and dispensing medical advice that could endanger some of the most vulnerable. While complaining 6 PACIFIC SUN MARCH 27 - APRIL 2, 2015
Editing a medical ethics magazine must give Steve Heilig practice at turning a blind eye. The medical industry is the third leading killer of Americans. Their own estimates range from 200,000 to 800,0000 dying from iatrogenic or medically induced causes. They’ve never actually bothered to count all their kills. Despite prestigious commissions exposing their deadly practices, the medical industry has not reduced their culling of the herd. Scientific evidence and for-profit medicine can fit in the same sentence, but they struggle to coexist in the same peer-reviewed paper. Was titling his article “Please Vaccinate,” while promoting a bill to force parents to vaccinate regardless of their personal or religious beliefs meant to be ironic? Making Californians follow in the public health footsteps of Mississippi, number one in infant mortality, childhood obesity, diabetes and mandatory vaccination rates surely is.
Stephen Simac, author of “Save Trillions with Universal Health Care”
And now for something completely different ... As a constituent, parent of a vaccineinjured child, registered nurse, independent researcher, historian, truth-seeker, libertarian, author and more, I feel the human obligation to inform you of the grave dangers we face. It is common knowledge that the pharmaceutical industry is among the most influential lobbies in the world. Can’t you see? It’s just as many ostracized health care professionals have stated for decades, some of which have mysteriously died! The wide array of possible vaccine injuries do in fact generate huge pharmaceutical profits on prescriptions for those vaccine injuries, often lasting a lifetime! While it all began with a well-intentioned discovery by Jonas Salk, it has since became the means by which a mega industry compiles enormous profits by disrupting the natural

biology of a rapidly expanding human population. It is by design. Stay with me. It gets more disturbing. So how is it that we blindly submit to the barbaric practice of piercing our primary protective barrier (skin) to inject the same disease it was intended to prevent? We abort all sense of logical rationale in the name of science. Hijacked science. Mad science. Science that resembles a watered down version of the Nazi eugenics program. But, of course, the entire U.S. medical and scientific community is directly rooted in the former Nazi Germany. A once brilliant intelligence operation to obtain scientific superiority has gradually transformed our entire nation via fear-based propaganda. Operation Paperclip in 1945 permitted 1,500 Nazi scientists to escape Germany post-WW II. Scattered throughout various U.S. government agencies including the CDC, FDA, AMA, NASA, military industrial complex and more, our nation has become completely infiltrated by the very secret societies that John F. Kennedy warned us about 52 years earlier. And, yes, it is common
knowledge nowadays that the CIA paired with organized crime to conspire and assassinate JFK. The most compelling documentary in my search among the dozens that expose the outrageous findings of the Warren Commission is titled, “JFK to 9/11, Everything is a Rich Man’s Trick” on YouTube. Within, you’ll also learn all about the Bush family ties to this Nazi agenda. Yep, for decades we’ve been so deceived on the grandest scales that we’ve elected these very secret society members as president, twice! Bottom line—if you’ve also been bought out, I don’t expect you to possess the spine to be honest with the people you supposedly represent. If you’re open-minded and genuinely concerned about the future of humanity, you’ll take the time to truly educate yourself, validate everything included above and act accordingly. It’s your conscience. It’s our nation and our race. Shall we call it “herd survival” since “herd immunity” is literally poisoning mankind?

▼ The Calderon clan must be so proud. The mother, father and adult son sent a man to the hospital after they assaulted him with deadly weapons and battered him. The family affair took place just after midnight last Monday at the 7-Eleven on Medway Road in San Rafael. According to police, the male victim and Michael Calderon, 22, were involved in an altercation at the doorway of the store and the young Calderon stabbed the man. Papa Arnaldo Calderon, 50, joined the fray by striking the man with a tire iron. Finally, Mama Ambrocia Calderon, 47, entered the ring and battered the male victim and a woman. The kinfolk were arrested, the male victim will recover and the woman wasn’t injured. Another mindless memory for the family scrapbook. —Nikki Silverstein

Choosing thrills over frills Actress and costume designer Melissa Claire—and her 7-year-old daughter—on villains and princesses by David Te mp l e ton
“B
lech.” That’s a loose paraphrase. Think of that quote more as the mostly-silent-but-enthusiastic pantomime of a retching action of a 7-year-old girl eating a chocolate éclair. That’s how Bella—daughter of award-winning Marin County actress and costume designer Melissa Claire—reacts when asked what she thinks of movies featuring princesses in frilly dresses waiting for princes to come along and take them on an adventure. “Blech.” So, when Bella was recently invited to go see the new live-action adaptation of Disney’s Cinderella, she was reluctant. It was her mom who changed her mind. When I told her that Kenneth Branagh (one of the best Shakespearean actors and directors in the world) directed it, and that the money he got would pay for him to do more Shakespeare, she said, “OK. For that reason I’ll watch it.’” “I really like Shakespeare!” Bella says, in-
Glass slippers aren’t the best for running away from princes. dulging in the aforementioned éclair at a coffee shop, where we’ve settled in to talk about the tremendously popular Cinderella, which has raked in a quarter-of-a-billion dollars in its first three weeks of release. The éclair is a last-minute substitute for the chocolate croissant that was a strongly stated request when asked to tag along with her mom for this interview. Bella’s introduction to Shakespeare has included watching a recording of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and last summer’s Marin Shakespeare Company productions of As You Like It, and Romeo and Juliet. She also appeared last summer as the fairy Peaseblossom in Bacchus Theatre Company’s production of Midsummer. “She takes great pride in pointing out to me that she was doing her first Shakespeare when she was 6, the same age I was still playing a gumdrop in Hansel and Gretel,” Claire says. One additional element of Shakespeare exposure was Return to the Forbidden Planet, produced last year by Marin Onstage and
Lily James stars as the frilly-dress-wearing princess in ‘Cinderella.’ Pretty and all, but why wait for a man to come along before you go on an adventure?
Curtain Theatre. It was for that show—a blend of the Shakespearean text and B-grade science-fiction movies, with rock and roll classic for good measure—that Claire won a costuming award from the San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle earlier this month. Claire also played a roller-skating robot. “Of all the Shakespeare she’s seen, I think Bella especially liked seeing Romeo and Juliet,” Claire says, “because there are sword fights, and lots of people die.” To this last remark, Bella grins and vigorously nods. Unfortunately—aside from whatever pride she can take in having supported Kenneth Branagh’s future Shakespearean efforts—the actual experience of watching Cinderella was not nearly as much fun as watching Romeo and Juliet kill themselves. “I hate princess movies,” Bella says, just putting it out there plain and simple. “I think I liked them once—and my cousin REALLY likes them—but I don’t like them anymore, because princesses aren’t really very interesting.” Asked if maybe she liked the relatively interesting princesses in Disney’s Frozen, Bella shakes her head. “Boring,” she says. In the interest of full disclosure, however, it must be revealed that last October Bella did appear in public dressed as Queen Elsa from Frozen. It was in Copperfield’s Books’ annual Zombie Walk. “I played Zombie Elsa,” Bella says, giggling. “I was Elsa, but I was dead.” “As we walked along with all of the other regular zombies, a lot of parents were giving me silent thumbs ups,” Claire says. “I think every parent is a little bit sick of Frozen by now. Bella and I were talking about it earlier today, and she said that if she had a choice between playing a princess in a show, or playing a villain, she’d rather play the villain.” “Villains do things,” Bella affirms. “Princesses just wait for something to happen.” “But you have to admit,” Claire says, “their costumes are sometimes pretty nice, right?” “Blech!” Speaking of costumes, it must be said that in Cinderella—which is a fairly traditional take on the classic story, with only the faintest of revisionist twists on the original animated version—the costumes are spectacular. Even I noticed how spectacular the designs were, from the viper-green dresses of Cinderella’s deliciously evil stepmother (Cate Blanchett) to the stunning blue gown worn by Cinderella
(Lily James) at the Prince’s ball. “It’s a pretty spectacular dress,” Claire says, training her costumer’s eye on the work of designer Sandy Powell, who is almost guaranteed an Oscar nomination at next year’s Academy Awards. “But that said,” Claire goes on, “I couldn’t help focusing on the construction of the dress, particularly regarding the waist. I was thinking about what it would be like to wear that dress, with the corseting at the waist that would have been required to achieve that kind of thin-waisted body image. It’s not a very attainable look, for almost anybody but Lily James. As soon as she put that dress on, she didn’t really move very much. She did dance during the waltz scene, but she really didn’t walk very far or do anything very active, because I’m sure she couldn’t really breathe. “What did you think of the blue dress, Bella?” “It was pretty,” Bella says with a shrug. “But I don’t think she could really run very far from the prince in that dress.” And everyone knows that Cinderella does run from the prince, when the clock strikes midnight, resulting in the loss of a certain iconic glass slipper. “I did like those slippers,” Claire confesses of the shoes that looked as if they were crafted from diamonds rather than out of glass. “They didn’t look delicate. They looked pretty sturdy. And the Fairy Godmother said they were very comfortable, and I believe her.” In the original Brothers Grimm story, as told in Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods— Disney’s other recent fairy tale adaptation— the glass slipper wasn’t very comfortable at all, especially for the stepsisters, who each hack off pieces of their feet in order to fit into the shoe. The mere mention of such bloody podiatric mayhem causes Bella to burst into a fit of giggles. “After I saw Into the Woods last year,” Claire explains, “I wanted to show Bella the original show, and there’s that great PBS recording of the Broadway stage play, with the original cast. And when they did that scene, where they cut the sister’s toe off—and her toe pops off and flies into the air—Bella thought it was hysterical.” “I did,” admits Bella, a happy grin inhabiting her face. “It was funny. I wanted to watch that part again right away.” Y Ask David if his shoes fit at talkpix@earthlink.net. MARCH 27 - APRIL 2, 2015 PACIFIC SUN 11

Marin: A Sorta Fairy Tale
Once upon a time
“L
The emergence— and resurgence— of fairy tales
ife itself is the most wonderful fairy tale of all.” So said Hans Christian Andersen, one of the most beloved storytellers of all time. We couldn’t agree more. And what better a place than Marin to live out our wildest fantasies? From its pristine beaches to its rolling emerald green hills, Marin is a land of enchantment in which we’re lucky enough to work, live and play. Most fairy tale authors and illustrators would look no further than our eclectic towns and open spaces for pure magic and inspiration. In our two Best of Marin 2015 issues, we pay tribute to all those who make the county what it is, and who have won the hearts of readers in our annual Reader’s Poll. We invite you to get lost in these pages, as you would in your favorite storybook. Celebrate the adventure, the mystery and the fantasy. After all, life can be a fairy tale if you want it to be. Happily ever after,
Molly Oleson

F
airy tales, or their forebears, have been around for nearly as long as people have been talking to each other. For millennia, you could hear them spoken all over the world, shared around the evening fire or a beaker of brew, passed down from generation to generation, each storyteller altering the plot, characters and mood to fit his or her fancy. Even in its pre-written, spokenword form, the fairy tale influenced literature around the world: Aesop’s Fables, The Arabian Nights: Tales from a Thousand and One Nights, the fantastical prose of Liezi and Zhuangzi, the Panchantantra of ancient India, the Gesta Romanorum of medieval Europe, Apuleius’ Metamorphoses and Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. (Idries Shah’s 1979 collection World Tales: The Extraordinary Coincidence of Stories Told in All Times, in All Places identifies 65 folktales that reappear in several cultures.) “Once upon a time” begins the classic fairy tale, referring to that nearly forgotten age of magic and wonder “when wishing,” goes the old saying, “was still effective.” Fairy tales don’t
necessarily have fairies in them, but elves, trolls, witches, gnomes, mermaids and other such creatures are usually involved. (Homo sapiens, like princesses and evil stepmothers, are welcome, too.) Unlike myths, legends, fables and other folktales, fairy tales are also quickly paced and to the point, like a good short story; The Wizard of Oz, The Hobbit and the Harry Potter novels may be fantastic, but they aren’t fairy tales. Fairy tales weren’t actually written down until the Renaissance Era, when Italian poets Giovanni Francesco Straparola and Giambattista Basile collected, reworked and published several dozen of them in two seminal works. By the reign of Louis XIV, fairy tales were all the rage among the fashionable ladies who frequented Paris’ literary salons; one of them, Marie-Catherine Le Jumel de Barneville, Baroness d’Aulnoy, coined the term “fairy tales” (contes de fées). Another courtier, Charles Perrault, published his own collection, Tales of Mother Goose, in 1697. The popularity of the fairy tale diminished
during the Age of Enlightenment and the Industrial Age, but the Brothers Grimm’s 1812 collection Children’s and Household Tales helped the genre regain its popularity, especially after the naughty bits were replaced with stern lessons in morality. Their success at preserving the style and substance of old German folktales encouraged 19th century folklorists in Russia, Norway, Japan, Romania and Ireland to do the same with their own native stories. (Joseph Jacobs’ 1890 collection of English folktales included Jack and the Beanstalk, The Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.) Denmark’s Hans Christian Andersen, meanwhile, came up with several beloved brand-new folktales all his own. The wry, postmodern fairy tales of the past century have kept the tradition thriving, and range from James Thurber’s The Unicorn in the Garden and e.e. cummings’ The Elephant and the Butterfly, to Jon Scieszka’s The Stinky Cheese Man and William Goldman’s The Princess Bride. The older tales are re-emerging as well, oftentimes in retooled versions that (to crib from Freud, Fromm and Bettelheim) express today’s subconscious impulses, fears and desires in a positive way. Some things never change. Y

Not born yesterday A biographical background on the leading wordsmiths of fairy tales
S
cores of writers, historians and BEST folklorists have contributed to the enduring legacy of the fairy tale. Here’s a who’s who of the genre’s most significant personalities. Giovanni Francesco “Straparola” (1480-1557), “the father of the literary fairy tale,” was the first European straparola (scribbler) to write down the fantastical folktales that had been told and retold for centuries. His magnum opus, The Facetious Nights of Straparola, features 75 bawdy, heroic, fantastic stories ostensibly shared over the course of a 13-day wingding, including 15 that we’d define today as fairy tales. Published in 1550 (and banned by the Catholic Church 74 years later), it includes the earliest known versions of Puss-in-Boots and The Golden Goose. Despite a successful career as a poet and courtier, Giambattista Basile (1566-1632) is remembered for the two volumes of fairy tales he collected and that his sister published under a pseudonym after his death. The Tale of Tales contains 50 stories (including early versions of Rapunzel, Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty) written in Basile’s baroque Neapolitan prose (“the Sun with his golden broom swept away the dirt of the Night”). Neglected for two centuries, it was rescued from obscurity by the Brothers Grimm, who praised it as “the first national collection of fairy tales.” (A movie version of The Tale of Tales starring Salma
Rapunzel let it all hang down for love.

Hayek is due for release later this year.) Charles Perrault (1628-1703), a favorite in the court of Louis XIV, lifted the fairy tale from its folksy, rustic origins and made it palatable for the aristocrats of Paris’ literary salons. His Tales and Stories of the Past (better known by its subtitle, Tales of Mother Goose), written after a long career as court poet, cultural arbiter and advisor to the Sun King, took the simple plots of Basile, Straparola and their Roman and medieval predecessors and modernized and embellished them with local color, Versailles gossip and a witty, sardonic tone. His stylish reinterpretations of Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, Blue Beard and Cinderella have earned him the title, “The founder of the modern fairy tale.” The life’s work of Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859) Grimm was to research and preserve German language, culture and folklore, and along the way they published Children’s and Household Tales, a scholarly tome of 86 stories of rigidly Germanic origin. Six revised editions and an additional 125 stories later, it formed the template for the fairy tale as we know it today. Gathered from peasant and aristo alike, and reworked and embellished with plot detail, psychological motivation and spiritual subtext, the tales were dark, violent “warning stores” for misbehaving children—a far cry from Perrault’s saucy adults-only fare. The brothers, who rejected the salonnieres’ high literary style for the regional dialects and “Low German” of the common Volk, brought fairy tales like Rumpelstiltskin, The Frog Prince and Hansel and Gretel to a whole new audience. Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was the first of the fairy tale scribes to come up with his own stories instead of collecting them from earlier sources. A prominent Danish novelist, poet and travel writer, his first two volumes of Fairy Tales were unsuccessful—until they were translated into several languages in 1845 and The Little Mermaid, The Snow Queen, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Princess and the Pea, Thumbelina, The Fir Tree, The Little Match Girl and The Red Shoes made him a famous and beloved figure around the world. (This despite the frequently somber tone of the stories— a tone inspired, perhaps, by Andersen’s miserable childhood and rumored lifelong celibacy.) International Children’s Book Day is celebrated on his birthday, April 2. Y

This very liberating shop sells lingerie, costumes, erotica, accessories and sex toys for men and women. She adds that her customers even include women and men in their 60s who have been referred by doctors to deal with sexual dysfunction. “When many people first come in, they are often shy and nervous, but once they relax and let go of shame, they blossom sexually and develop a new sense of health and confidence, and their lives improve in every way,” she says.

BEST WOMEN’S BOUTIQUE
“Effortless fashion.” That’s how Viva Diva Boutique manager Bri Lindemulder sums
up why Viva Diva was voted Marin’s Best Women’s Boutique. Owner Amy Anderson opened the contemporary, wearable fashion boutique 17 years ago by accident. “I was a waitress and irreparably injured my wrist, so I got a job as a clothing rep—hated it—and quit,” Anderson says. And by some kismet-like coincidence, Lindemulder found her way into Viva Diva after having to quit her full-time job cutting hair, due to a back injury she had sustained in a car crash. Both credit their unexpected turn of events for why their customer service is “hardcore.” “We just have fun; we’re here to style you, not just sell clothes,” Lindemulder says. And the style is “L.A. bohemian with New York rocker edge,” thanks to sourcing directly from each coastline. 1ST YEAR HALL OF FAME: BEST AUTO BODY REPAIR/DESIGN
Blake’s Auto Body is not only celebrating their Best of Marin win this year, but also 35 years in business. Specializing in state-of-the-art auto collision repair and painting, Blake’s—with four locations—works on everything from VW bugs to Maseratis. Companywide, they repair around 850 wrecks a month, and offer 24-hour towing and a lifetime repair warranty. “We strive to have the highest technology available,” says Rebecca Brunk, director of sales and marketing. Many of the employees have been there for years, and more than 90 percent of the customers are repeat customers. “I know that when I tell someone—refer my family or friends—I always know that they’re going to get great repair and be very well taken care of,” she says. Brunk says that Blake’s was the first to bring eco-friendly automotive paints to Northern California, and two of their locations are solar-powered. Anthony Algood, who has been with Blake’s for 16 years, says that he likes the challenge of restoring a car that’s been in a wreck. “And then the customer’s face when you see the shock in their eyes,” he says. “They say, ‘Wow, is that my car?!’” Blake’s Auto Body 31 Bay St., San Rafael, 415/459-6115, blakesautobody.com

“Try to pronounce my last name,” says Pat McAlonan, owner of Cains Tires. A legend himself, McAlonon has been with Cains for more than 60 years. Cains was the name of the original owner (they had been in business for 100 years), which is why McAlonon decided to keep the same name. “We are absolutely honest with customers,” he says, “and it’s hard to be honest in a business that is so full of deceit.” But Cains’ customers are like family. With a list of repeat customers that have been coming to Cains for 15 to 30 years, it’s no wonder that Cains earned a spot in the coveted Hall of Fame. “I teach my employees that the most positive thing you can have is spunk,” he says. “You can teach a person to sell tires, but you can’t teach enthusiasm.” Cains Tires 1531 Fourth St., San Rafael, 415/ 453-2942, cainstire.com

BEST TIRE SHOP
Elite customer service sets Toscalito Tire & Automotive apart, says Dave Steacy, inventory manager. “We pride ourselves on our nice, clean showrooms and our professional, can-do attitude.” With more than 43 years in the business, six locations and around 75 employees—many who have been there longterm—Toscalito has a family atmosphere, Steacy says, and offers customers good pricing on everything from tire and auto repair, to air conditioning service, to engine rebuilding. Steacy says that the most important thing is to keep customers happy and satisfied. “We say our focus is to maintain their cars so in the long run, they don’t have huge repair bills,” he says. “So they can avoid that big ticket— maintenance is key.”

Experience and good quality are what you look for when you have to get your car fixed, and it stands to reason that you could trust a business that’s been around since 1927! Brad Hunt and his brother Jack manage Jack L. Hunt Automotive Sales & Service, a family business, and everyone working there has at least 20 years of experience. Hunt says that part of the reason that they do such quality work is because they are ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certified, which takes a lot of work to get, and AAA approved. He adds that in addition to a dedicated repair staff, they also have a large staff up front to deal

What you see is what you get at Toyota Marin. Renowned for their transparency, this is a car dealership that reinvents the car salesman perception. “We want car-buying, servicing and the whole experience to be fun,” says Mike Christian, general manager. “It’s the second-largest purchase someone is going to make—it’s a tremendous emotional attachment that people have to their cars.” Operating under a set of ethos that considers the customer first, Toyota Marin is also known for its active role in the community—with
a team made up of many born-and-raised Marinites. And if that doesn’t “sell you” on why they are the best—maybe it will be the free car washes for life with any car purchase that will seal the deal.

Since 1969, Good Earth Natural Foods has been promoting ways for people to become eco-friendly. It’s no surprise that this company keeps winning the Best of Marin title. It’s now entering the Hall of Fame after living up to its good name for more than seven years. Good Earth Natural Foods offers customers the best organically grown products and encourages farmers and manufacturers to “produce food of higher quality.” The company believes that eating organic food gives people the best chance to “heal the earth and their bodies.” Good Earth is certainly doing its job, and is committed to serving Marin’s communities by promoting an eco-friendly lifestyle. It’s hard to beat a wonderland of hills, redwood groves and more than 50 miles of trails that boasts breathtaking views of our gorgeous county, shimmering San Francisco and beyond. This 2,571-foot peak attracts everyone from those looking for a leisurely stroll or a picnic spot, to hardcore trekkers and campers. Visible from countless places in Marin, Mt. Located just 20 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, Stinson Beach is an easy escape for city folk, as well as Marin locals. The beach is favorable for walking and surfing, and swimmers can be seen splashing on the warmest of days. Facilities include rest rooms, showers, picnic areas and BBQ grills, and a snack bar in the summer months keeps beach babes refreshed. If you look out for rip currents, “sneaker” waves and sharks, Stinson Beach can be relaxing and enjoyable for all ages. BEST BIKE SHOP
Mike’s Bikes, founded in 1964 as one of Marin’s very first Schwinn shops, caters to every customer’s needs—whether it’s someone looking to get into cycling, or a seasoned pro. Mike’s strives to get as many people on bikes as possible, and when you walk into one of their 11 stores, you sense immediately that they know bikes backwards and forwards, love biking themselves and find joy in getting the community excited about cycling. “They buy bikes from
us, their kids have bought bikes from us and their grandkids are gonna buy bikes from us,” says Richard Morrow, general manager, of loyal customers. “Our staff is biking in the community that we’re serving,” says Tom Casson, sales manager. “It’s nice for [our customers] to see that we ride, too. The products that they’re buying, we’re using, too.” Not only do they wave to customers on the roads and on the trails, but Mike’s Bike’s staff invites their neighbors along for the ride. You can find a beginner cruise to a coffee shop or a farmers’ market, or choose to log some serious miles. Mike’s also offers free weekly tech clinics that have become wildly popular, so you can count on the experts to help you keep your bike in tip-top shape. BEST BUSINESS THAT PROMOTES GOING GREEN
With the goal of helping Marin reach zero waste, Marin Sanitary Service (MSS) has “going green” covered, from composting to recycling. “We invest in reaching out and educating students, businesses and apartment buildings in the community on what they can do to help improve their carbon footprint,” says Zoe Pearl, recycle program coordinator at Marin Sanitary Service (MSS). It’s a familyowned business that has been a county staple since 1948, thanks to founder Joe Garbarino. They have a partnership with the local sewage treatment plant to produce renewable energy that powers the plant itself. “The community is free to take tours of the facility,” the MSS team encourages, “to see how recycling actually works and where the garbage goes.” They even have pigs on the property to eat food scraps and reduce landfill. What is one of the main things that the Marin County Farmers’ Market is proud to announce? A permanent residence at the San Rafael Civic Center! The farmers’ market— managed by the Agricultural Institute of Marin (AIM)—had a ballot measure pass with 81 percent of the vote this past November. Right now, there are seven farmers’ markets around the Bay Area that AIM manages—most with temporary leases, a day or two here or there. With more than 300 vendors to manage at any given market, it’s no surprise that Marin’s farmers’ markets are considered the premiere spots to grab your locally grown goods. “We are especially excited about the permanent farmers’ market project,” says Peter Healy, farmer’s market manager at AIM. “We’re about to launch a little more of the public phase of our capital campaign and get the community involved.”

LAGUNITAS We at the Lagunitas Brewing Co. hope you enjoy these genuinely handmade ales. A lot hard work and enthusiasm go into every aspect of brewing this Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Ale. From building the brewery itself to putting the cap on each and every bottle, virtually every step was done by hand. Thanks for your trust, and as always: Think Globally, Drink Locally!... “And you’re full of ragwater bitters and blue ruin and you’re spilling out over the edge to anyone who’ll listen.” These are the words of our favorite Sonoma songsmith. They describe a cocktail of romantic despair wrapped in red flock wall paper and marinated in a soulful yearning. On the rocks. With a twist. We’ve all been there. The beer in this bottle, however, is none of that. So maybe Ragwater is a crappy name for the beer but we liked it, and so whatever. It’s always better to be happy than right. Mostly, anyways. Whatever. Forget it. Never mind... Anyway, we were going out to, uh, the, uh, you know, thing, and all, and when we got there, well, uh, the dude was like-“whoa man! I mean, and we were all, uh, you know- whoa! And stuff, and when I said to him, like you know, hey man and all, they, I mean he, was all “what?” and stuff- and I just told him what you said and all, and they were all man- “not cool dude”, but whatever- so uh, we split and went back to my lair and just hung out and whatever, but the whole thing was, like, just Such a bummer and all but you know, it was cool and stuff, but you just gotta, you know, about the dude and all, like, it’s cool and you know, but what’s up with the “blah blah blah”? Whatzit got to do with beer and all? I mean, really, dude, whatever… There I was, sweaty and strung out, holed up for the third day in a cheap hotel with a genuine Juanita on my lap. On the lamb was more than a way of life. It had a smell, and it stunk like hops. Juanita shrieked something about an “Escoba grande con queso en mota para la pelicula…”, but I wasn’t listening. For now I was focused on the undercover Ale clenched between jaunita’s knees and also how good it would taste later while she cooled out in the soon to be locked shed out back of Palmdale where the turkey farmers still run. Ale is thicker than even blood. I already knew this and I also knew that the dicks were not far behind and that ever at their distance they could smell everything and would never let up on me. Flip the dicks. Here come the bastards… Here they come…It has been broughten to our attrition that they're have been numberous spelling errors on hour various lables. From the cureous (as in 'steet') too the sublime (as in 'redempetion'). As a soulution to this problem we have retrained an imminent linguist from Stanford and have invested in a spel checker computter utilitiy. For now however, the thing I want to know is: Who are these werd police? Anyway? Who is the boss, ewe or the words? Huh? And besides, what dew words, let alone speling, have to do with beer anyway. I mean, who ever herd of some namby pamby pale lexiphile curling up buy a warm fire with a good book and a cold beer. This hole bussiness has gone plenty far enouph, don't you think?... Like Adam and Eve, Issac and Ishmael, Mao and confuscious, Good and Evil, Day and Night, Hittites and Visigoths, John and Lorena, or Groucho and Moe, Ales and Lagers are as different as can be. Still we must love each for who they are, separately but equally, with liberty, and justice for all. Cheers!... Those among you who have visited a brewery already know. Those who have not can not imagine. It is said that it takes a lot of beer to make great wine. What then does it take a lot of to make great beer? Answer: Human flesh, and lots of it. Not in the beer, of course, but on the blisteringly hot sides of the whirlpool tank, or on the spinning shaft of a pump head. If you should see one of our club footed, three-fingered, cycloptic albino brewers on the street, you might be inclined to give them a quarter. But don't! These individuals are highly paid professionals. Masters of their craft, and committed to their trade with little or no regard for their own personal safety or physical appearance. Beer is a cruel master. Masters are cruel, and beer is no exception. Just don't picture their twisted forms as you enjoy their fine ales... Well, well, well. The head brewer stood opposite the massive brewing vessels that were his to command. His mind raced through the possibilities. What is the temperature of the malt in the grist case overhead? Was the hot liquor tank up to temp? Would the ambient temperature affect the final mash temperature? Should he compensate for the delta temp by running a little higher mash-in temperature? A single degree in either direction would have a life changing effect on both the brewer and the brewee. The beer could be too sweet if a degree high, or too mild and dry if a niggling degree too low. The character of the future beer that this batch would be hung in the balance. The brewer drew a bead on the temp-probe, the mash tun waited, and the world held its breath...

Warm Things doesn’t just have you covered when it comes to mattresses—this familyowned business locally manufactures all things warm and cozy—including pillows and down comforters. “We know the materials,” says Richard Smith Aller, president and owner. “And so we know how to put it together to make it the best product possible.” All products are made here in Marin:—“We don’t just sell something, we make it and sell it.” The entire staff prides itself on its breadth of knowledge, which is understandable considering that Warm Things has been in business for 41 years. The team is proud to announce that they are currently renovating their San Rafael location. “We invite everyone to come down and see it,” Smith Aller says.

“I love blowing people away,” says Elliot Atlas, owner of 26-year-old Atlas Window & Carpet Cleaning. “When we come in and it’s just like, ‘Whoah!’—That’s one of the most satisfying things.” He believes that carpet cleaners are not created equal. “Why be the quick in-and-out kind of guy,” he says. “Why not do an excellent job?” The company uses superior cleaning and drying tools, a truck-mounted carpet cleaning system and safe and effective cleaning agents. The time, energy and dedication shows. “I love Atlas,” a customer recently said of the business. “They’re always on time, they’re efficient, they care and they’re polite. You’ve seen their cars zoom past you on Highway 101—what can be said about Molly Maid (of Marin) that hasn’t already been said? Pat Belardi, the owner of the Marin chapter, explains that it runs in the family. “I worked for my father growing up,” Belardi says. “He
had a commercial janitorial business.” With a team of nearly 38 people—Belardi and crew tackle Marin and the western part of Contra Costa County. “We want to be dependable, accountable and flexible,” she says. “Once you do all three of those things—you can get the job done right.” If the company’s open dialogue approach with customers doesn’t convince you of its eminent status, perhaps its philanthropic work with the Center for Domestic Peace will—every October a portion of the cleaning fees go to this nonprofit. In business for 21 years, and with more than 39,000 customers, Computer Connection has a simple secret. “We just make it happen,” says owner Mike Eagan. On any given day, Eagan and his four computer experts will have 20 or more projects going on, and follow their customer service credo to do things “quickly and efficiently.” The bulk of the troubleshooting involves PC viruses and spyware; only 10 percent of their calls are for Apple products. Computer Connection also visits offices to personally treat malfunctioning networks and temperamental technologies. Eagan himself has been working on PCs since he was 16 years old, with no signs of powering down anytime soon.

After 28 years of business, it’s fair to say that Clough Construction knows a thing or two about building and contracting. “We got into the business because we are nature lovers,” Deanne Clough says. “Our projects transform people’s homes and offer a meeting place between nature and home.” The company illustrates most of its projects with architectural designs done by a drafter, and then executes projects with sustainably harvested wood. Clough is also invested in the next generation—supporting a slew of school projects to educate students. Construction as a whole is consuming 50 percent of all of the world’s natural resources, Clough notes, which is why the company has committed to being educators on sustainability. “It’s such an honor to be voted [Best of Marin] by our community and to be of service,” she says. “It’s very sweet— we’re grateful.” Clough Construction 4220 Redwood Hwy., San Rafael, 415/444-5554, cloughconstruction.com 2NDJust Fences, Novato 3RDMarin Fence Company, San Rafael

“My honey purchased the building in 1982 and converted it over to self-storage, and then it was all one floor,” says Bellam Self-Storage & Boxes owner Andree Jansheski, looking over adoringly at husband and co-owner Dr. J. “He was the first person to go vertical with three floors,” she explains. The building is complete with three floors, elevators and artwork that adorn each crevasse of the edifice. Bellam went solar in 2006 and produces more power than they use—the self-storage company sells the extra power to Marin Clean Energy. In addition to helping to reduce Marin’s carbon footprint, the business has also partnered with San Rafael Clean for the Butts Program—which collected more than one million cigarette butts off the streets in a one-year period.

The customer is always right. It’s a saying that Ken Sites, owner of Ken’s Crystal Clear Windows lives by. And with customers coming back again and again over the past 25 years, he must be doing something right. “I try to do a good job,” Sites says, noting that his window-

cleaning motto is, “You’ll see the difference.” “I call myself reliable and reasonable. I show up, give ‘em a good price, get the job done.” When Sites first started out, he didn’t have any formal training in business. It was a struggle, he says, but he learned by teaching himself and watching other people. “They always told me, ‘Keep it simple.’” An ad in the Pacific Sun led to “a good many calls.” The best part about what he does? “Being independent, self-employed and meeting new people all the time,” he says.

Where is more fitting for an antique store than the former No. 1 antiquing capital of the world? San Anselmo’s very own Dove Place Antiques, Consignment & Estate Liquidation is a mom-and-pop shop that isn’t afraid to take antiquing to the next level. It’s the silver, jewelry and Chinese antiques that are the hottest items today, says owner Wayne Wechsler. “We sell a lot of stuff on eBay,” says son and employee Matt Wechsler. “We have over 5,000 on our feedback score, so we’re a really trusted seller. We are insured and we pack and send the item ourselves.” Peruse the latest inventory or bring in an item and have the team help you sell it on eBay with the potential of reaching a worldwide audience. The store’s largest sale amounted to $40,000 from an eBay auction. Stop by and find out why Dove Place and the Wechslers are the best.
When you’re looking for an especially nice gift for someone—or for yourself—you’ll be delighted at the selection that the David M. Brian gift shop offers. The store itself is lovely, and everywhere you look, you’ll see something beautiful—from cut crystal vases and plates to specialty soaps and lotions. Plenty of practical items are on hand, too, including small kitchen appliances, cookware, games, books and a huge variety of decorative items. Services also include a gift and bridal registry, custom invitations, cards and announcements.

Ever wonder what made Clive Owen look so good in The Knick? Or how Johnny Depp’s cheekbones managed to look so sharp and sexy on the big screen in The Lone Ranger? Nowell’s Lighting can fill you in on a little secret—it was their lighting! Juan Pineda, co-owner of Nowell’s since 1998, recounts a laundry list of epic projects that the lighting store has assisted with—from illuminating blockbuster movies, to the Ford Theater, to the U.S. Treasury Department. “Our reputation is out there and it means a lot to many people,” Pineda says. “We are thankful to our customers—thank you for keeping us in business. We will continue to do the best we can.”

you find it, or you can discover it on your own,” he says. With two locations, hundreds of titles, more than 800 events a year, in-store classes (for credit), an emphasis on school book fairs, and partnerships with nonprofits, it’s no wonder that this place has won the hearts of lovers of the written word. “We’ve become such a community center,” says Luisa Smith, the store’s buying director. Kathryn Petrocelli, event and conference coordinator, agrees, noting that people view the store as a hub where there’s always something exciting happening or about to happen. “Book groups have formed here; friendships have formed here,” she says. “It’s a place that people feel embraced and welcomed.”
hasn’t looked back since. Fairfax is nothing short of a mythical place among Marin’s towns. It’s credited as the birthplace of the Bay Area’s mountain biking pioneers, is an undisputed New Age enclave of peace, love and patchouli oil—and proud of it—and the only city to have its own currency, Fairbucks. “The character of the town is historically rooted in fun,” Kopelman says. Its eclectic mix of shops is a reflection of the city’s distinct population, a blend of young-spirited older residents and today’s youth. “It’s a town for the whole family that attracts creative, progressive and alternative lifestyles,” Kopelman says. With such an open and inviting character, it’s no wonder that Fairfax was voted this year’s best town in the county.

ViDEO Fantasy and mystery Part three, chapter one of THE HUNGER GAMES came in for criticism last fall for trying to milk every last dollar out of fans, and to be sure MOCKINGJAY—PART 1 is hardly a standalone the way the first two were—if you start here you’ll be lost. But the film’s two-plus hours are anything but filler: This We can only hope that the magnifying glass is in your coat brooding chapter has the internal pocket, Cumberbatch, but where’s the essential Sherlock logic of a series breather, and as a Holmes pipe? tension-builder for the fireworks to come—it can’t be beat. We join Katniss as she arrives back at the hub of the uprising, District 13, where shadow-like President Coin is marshalling resistance forces for an assault on the capital. To win hearts and minds, the movement needs a figurehead—and Katniss is a natural for the part—but she finds herself put to use in propaganda in ways not unlike Snow’s at Panem. One only hopes the rebellion’s motives are more pure. Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Julianne Moore star. Non-Panemaniacs can steer to an equally thrilling cult series from across the pond, the BBC smash SHERLOCK, which has gone to world fame since first airing in 2008; three seasons (nine episodes) are now available on Blu-ray. In this superbly clever updating of the Conan Doyle stories, Benedict Cumberbatch plays the consulting investigator for hire, whose fin-de-siècle spirit is retained even as the detection brings newfangled tech-like GPS and text to bear. No fan of the originals will fail to be charmed by Cumberbatch and his Watson, Martin Freeman, who have all the intellectual chops and bravura of the books—along with old favorite nemeses like Irene Adler and Moriarty. A Christmas special is expected this year.—Richard Gould

You want a CPA whose ethos is compatible with yours, one who can talk your language. So forget the old paradigms about accountants and forge an intellectual partnership with your new CPA. You need one who understands entrepreneurs and can bring new ideas to the table. If you are less than satisfied with the tax and financial help you’ve been getting, call me. WHAT’S YOUR SIGN? WEEK OF MARCH 27- APRIL 2, 2015
BY LEONA MOON
ARIES (March 21 - April 19) Lean on me, Aries! Felt a bit like a onewoman (man) band lately? Sure, you’re capable of rubbing your stomach and patting your head at the same time—not to mention just about anything else as a natural leader, but it’s time to ask for some help. Find a partner in crime on April 2. TAURUS (April 20 - May 20) Drop it like it’s hot, Taurus! Can you think of a certain someone (who uses the last of the toothpaste and never replaces the toilet paper) who has been getting on your nerves? Annoying is turning into toxic—and holding in all of those feelings isn’t helping the situation. Try dumping a certain someone special on March 31. GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Not sure if you want to commit, Gemini? Well, the stars have decided for you—you’re getting pregnant! If you think you know what to expect when you’re not expecting—think again. Some kind of emotional breakthrough with your dearly beloved is celestially scheduled for April 2. CANCER (June 21 - July 22) Someone came in like a wrecking ball, Cancer. If you’re feeling caught off-guard or slightly let down, it’s understandable. Unforeseeable changes are headed your way on March 28—do your best to rely on your innate intuition. Collaboration is key, but in this planetary lineup, it’s vital to take charge and lead the way on certain tasks. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 22) Big changes are headed your way, Leo! We’re talking a sleeve tattoo or maybe moving in with your significant other after a few months. It’ll be the perfect dash of adventure that you’ve been yearning for—good luck! And, remember, you could buy a car for the price of a successful tattoo removal, so don’t get those initials just yet. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 22) You can’t force someone into being with you, Virgo! You’re going to have to let go a little bit here. Your potential flame is being scared away by your “swag,” which is actually more like peer pressure. You’re jonesin’ for this one—we get it. But keep it cool if you want to keep this babe on lockdown. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 22) Tired of being bossed around, Libra? We can tell! Your assertive self is coming forward to take names and take charge on April 2. Let go of your follower role and take the driver’s seat. No more unloading the dishwasher or emptying the cat litter for you this coming week—it’s all about delegating! SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 21) Bring ’em out, bring ’em out, Scorpio! It may be time to say goodbye. Are you still secretly smoking cigarettes in the bathroom while that Anthropologie candle is lit? Or dating that prick who you told your friends you dumped ages ago? A huge weight will be lifted off of your shoulders if you just go toward the light and tell the truth! SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Getting by with a little help from your friends, Sagittarius? Looks like you’ve found a bandwagon of likeminded people to collaborate with. These new partnerships will likely provide a fountain of ideas that will earn you extra accolades at work (and some new drinking buddies, as well). CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 - Jan. 19) Do you like who you are dating, Capricorn? Do you love who you are dating? Chances are you’re not in the mood for a light-hearted fling. So if the person you’ve been courting still has a Tinder profile, you might want to end things ASAP. Remember rule No. 1—you should never have to play second fiddle! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 18) Get ready to drop some knowledge, Aquarius! Have you been holding in a thought or two that has your insides turning upside down? Speak the truth on April 1—trust us, you’ll be no fool. It’s better out than in—even if it stings a little. PISCES (Feb. 19 - March 20) Are you ready to write your will with a special someone, Pisces? You may be feeling all things love on March 31, but a special someone might be seeing it as possessiveness. Tone down your passion and embrace a certain je ne sais quoi. That’ll keep the interest, and your partner guessing. k MARCH 27 - APRIL 2, 2015 PACIFIC SUN 53

Q:
I’m a 35-year-old guy who’s doing online dating and who’s against having kids for moral reasons. Don’t get me wrong; I love kids. I just don’t think we need any more people on this crowded, violent planet. I’m wondering whether I should make the “no kids” thing clear in my profile. I know this can be a major deal-breaker for many women.—Nobody’s Daddy
A:
Saying you won’t have kids for “moral reasons” sounds better than my reasons: I find them loud, sticky and expensive. There’s also the problem of how long they take to, uh, ripen, which used to be 18 years—before kids started living at home until 30. (Many murder sentences are shorter.) And now, bear with me as I put a buzz saw through your reasons. As for this “violent planet” business, it used to be that somebody was always cracking somebody over the head with a cudgel. But today, as psychologist Steven Pinker reports in The Better Angels of Our Nature, the planet is less violent than ever, and violence continues to decline. As for the “crowded” argument, in 2011, National Geographic’s Robert Kunzig reported that all seven billion earthlings could fit comfortably in Texas—“if Texas were settled as densely as New York City.” And it turns out that women in the U.S. aren’t having enough children to replace the population dying off. According to World Bank data, American mommies are only having 1.9 children, while demographers put the replacement rate at 2.1 of the screeching, airplane-seat-kicking little darlings. The good news is that if you truly like kids, you don’t have to bring them into the world to bring them into your life. There’s adoption, of course (though most women who can give birth to children will want to instead of importing one “made in China”). But there are also countless kids already in existence whose divorced, widowed, or otherwise single moms have a harder time finding boyfriends—even if they’re uber-hot and so sweet they make your teeth hurt. Do profile searches for moms, and say in your profile that you don’t want to create new earthlings but love kids and are open to a woman who already has some. To describe the likely spike in your popularity after hanging the “Welcome, Single Moms!” sign, well, ever watch a pack of wild dingoes descend on a downed cow? Then again, say you like your life child-free but went all eco-pacifist so you wouldn’t seem like a big meanie. Definitely put the “nobody’s daddy” thing in your profile. You might also want to consider a vasectomy (with a surgeon who does loads of them, which lessens the risks). Unfortunately, getting snipped is not the deterrent to aspiring mommies that you might think it would be. Women pining to spawn are prone to chirp, “Vasectomies can be reversed!”—forgetting that it’s a little harder to reverse a man’s aversion to, say, tapping into a quartermillion-plus dollars of his earnings to fund orthodontia, grad school and rehab. More bad news: For some women, not wanting kids at the moment seems to be no guarantee of not eventually wanting them. Badly. Desperately. And by the way, I’ve always found the, “Come on, you’ll want kids someday!” remark insulting, as if some random stranger at a cocktail party could know my mind better than I do. But a study in the Journal of Evolutionary Psychology by Finnish researcher Anna Rotkirch found that women—like me—who were sure they didn’t want children sometimes found themselves suddenly experiencing “baby fever,” which goes way beyond the wish to have a child. It’s a painful physical longing to have a baby (often experienced in a woman’s early 20s and between 28 and 35). One of Rotkirch’s subjects, a woman in her 30s who knew it wasn’t the right time for a child, described feeling an “agonizing” and “all-encompassing desire” to have one, to the point where she was “practically ready to rob a sperm bank.” In other words, yes: Disclose! Disclose! Disclose! State your preference in your profile. But don’t think that this will be any sort of mandate for women to care about what you want. Some will—even some of those with a uterus howling, “I WANT A BAYBEEE!” They’ll be the ones who default to their ethics instead of their biology. So until there’s highly reliable male birth control that doesn’t require a scalpel, make it your priority to find out whether a woman is ethical before having sex with her. It’s really your best—and maybe only—defense against the joy of bringing something into the world that spends half its time hating you and the other half begging you for money. Y

If either party to this action should die before the jointly held community property is divided, the language in the deed that characterizes how title is held (i.e., joint tenancy, tenants in common, or community property) will be controlling, and not the community property presumption. You should consult your attorney if you want the community property presumption to be written into the recorded title to the property.
