FROM THE EDITOR

Inspiration and Revelations S

ometimes creativity needs a little help. In this edition, we’ve compiled examples of stellar package design and engineering from an international array of contests. The aim: to help designers amp up their imaginations to 11. One such piece of inspiration is the resplendent Anni perfume bottle and box, pictured on page 44. What struck me most about this 2011 o Prêmio ABRE da Embalagem Brasileira award winner is that it beautifully conveys the concept of reveal. Package Design magazine also has something to reveal: We have a new editor — yours truly. Prior to joining Package Design, I was senior editor at Packaging Digest magazine. I’ve also been lucky enough to work on some great graphic arts publications, including Graphic Arts Monthly, Converting and several Innes Publishing printing titles. The timing could’nt be more right. In addition to this issue being our Annual Awards issue, it’s also the issue that will be distributed at Graph Expo and Pack Expo. These shows, produced by GASC and PMMI respectively, are the annual gathering places for the graphic arts and packaging industries and great opportunities to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. I hope to see you there. If you plan to be in Las Vegas—September 26 to 28—for Pack Expo, be sure to check out the expanded Brand Zone. Sponsored by Package Design, the Brand Zone aims to inspire by introducing visitors to the materials and containers that help shape winning brands. While there, don’t forget to stop by the Package Design booth to vote in the 2011 Makeover Challenge, sponsored by Brushfoil. We’ll be located at booth S6046. For this year’s challenge, four design firms re-imagined brand positions and package designs for beverage bottler The Brazil Gourmet. If you can’t make it to the show, you can still vote for your favorite redesign at www.PackageDesignMag.com/MakeoverChallenge.

We design a little

“wow”

into every package. Was it the visibility of the product? Was it the shelf impact? Was it the functionality the packaging offered? Yes. It was all of those things and more. It drove her to the package, got it in her hands and created the moment we all work for. But before your product gets into her hands, it has to work in your marketing plan, in your boardroom and on the production line. It has to meet retail demands and it has to work on your balance sheet. We know, and that’s why our packaging solutions take brands from design to manufacturing to the shelf and into the cart. Let us put the “wow” into your next packaging project. Call us at 888-449-8520.

Digital Printing Achieves Lake Effect When owner and president Gene Pierce founded

Glenora in 1977, he used a label image that evokes the Finger Lakes District of upstate New York – the Glenora Falls that cascade into Seneca Lake near his winery in Dundee, Yates County. Now, some three decades later, he’s revamping his labels with the falls and other images that suggest the area. Their new shimmering look is made possible by the technical prowess of the prepress team and their HP Indigo press at Logotech Inc., Fairfield, NJ. “When we created our first label, it was a whole different world,” Pierce says. “We needed to transition away from paper and glue, and we needed a whole new look.” He explains that Glenora was the first winery in the area. “Today there are 60 wineries and the area has evolved into a tourist destination. Glenora has also prospered with a restaurant and the Inn at Glenora Wine Cellars that are on the property. “We’re the only winery that has an Inn in the area,” he says. At the suggestion of a neighboring winemaker, Anna Zugibe, Pierce retained Christine Witte of Classic Impressions, Great Meadows, NJ, and designer Erin Kelly, Warwick, NY, to create new labels that would have outstanding shelf presence and withstand the moisture of an ice bucket. “It’s been wonderful all the way along,” Pierce says of the process. Special Effects That Stick

A 24-year label industry veteran, Witte has spent the last four years as a printing reseller to high end companies. She’s a great fan of digital printing because of the special visual effects you can get and because of the quality it delivers. “The registration is remarkable,” she says, “and there are no plates or plate changes to drive up the cost. You just don’t get the sharpness and clarity from traditional methods that you do on an HP Indigo.”

Witte explains that she and Kelly worked with Anita Sparrow, art director and operations manager at Logotech to come up with the right look. “We chose a silver metallized BOPP film for the substrate with an adhesive that will adhere to glass in cold, wet conditions,” Witte says. “The color is a PMS yellow but appears as metallic gold.” HP Indigo presses support a wide range of media and substrates and offer the ability to print on plastic films, such as PVC, PET and PE. “Then we experimented with using a small percentage of white to cover parts of the film to create the reflecting effect,” Sparrow continues. “Because you’re using very small dots, it’s a complex process. That’s the beauty of the HP; you can look and then tweak. You can’t do that conventionally because of cost. A designer can take the time to make something special. We do this for many of our customers. We work hand in hand.” “We can try a couple of different things and show them to the client,” Witte says. “They can choose what they like. They can apply the press sample to a bottle and decide what they think. “Some 20 different varietals have the new waterfall labels,” she continues. “The Lake Series labels came next. The owner’s daughter loves to sit in an Adirondack chair on the dock at the lake and watch the sunset. That’s the image we’ve captured in this series. We’re working on the final three that will have images from Yates County.” To Gene Pierce, the labels capture the pleasure of watching his family and guests enjoy the peace and beauty of the winery he’s built and nurtured for a generation. “The thing that stands out for me is that the process Logotech uses creates the shimmering effect of the lake at sunset,” Pierce says. To him, the label is more than just a graphic. “Two of these chairs are on each patio at the Inn,” he adds, “so it’s not just a picture stuck on a piece of paper.”

The Convertible Clamshell

Bag-in-Box for Automotive Fluids

By: HAVI Global Solutions

By: Scholle Packaging

The hingeless, polypropylene package design provides operational efficiency improvements as well as product differentiation. In addition to its package design benefits for behind the food service counter, the creative packaging structure provides consumers with product protection, portability, visibility, insulation, and calibrated moisture release through the inventive integration of vents when the package is closed. The clamshell-to-plate package also is recyclable, reuseable, and formed from a custom, downgauged resin sheet thickness.

Scholle Packaging’s bag-in-box system for automotive chemicals and fluids allows industry suppliers to satisfy their customers’ needs with an efficient, environmentally conscious package. When used to replace one-L bottles of motor oil, each bag-in-box packaging system diverts 24 plastic packages from the waste stream. Overall, petroleum-based resin usage in the packaging is reduced by nearly 90% compared to rigid one-L bottles. The outer carton of the packaging system is also fully recyclable. PD

This distributor coordinated the purchase of the raw components and worked with the customer to source the labels.

Silver – Cosmetics & Personal Care People’s Choice Award

CHI Royal Treatment Hair Care Line By: Farouk Systems Inc. Distributor: TricorBraun The real story in this opulent-looking plastic bottle is the closure: a twist-open/close dispenser cleverly designed into the top “jewel” of the crown. The distributor designed the closure in this way so that customers wouldn’t have to settle for a standard dispensing closure in this “royal” line.

Gold – Drug & Pharmaceutical

Tone By: Complete Nutrition Distributor: Berlin Packaging The objective was to increase shelf presence in a cluttered and homogenous category. The customer also needed to remain with stock packaging to ensure that filling speeds and cost of goods didn’t increase. Solution: an overcap that lets filling continue uninterrupted but greatly differentiates the product on the shelf. Gold – Food & Beverage

Amoretti Organic Olive Oil By: Noushig Inc. Distributor: Berlin Packaging A hand-scripted brandmark is paired with an elegant amber glass bottle with a stair-stepped pedestal foot and soft, rounded shoulder. Gold – Pet & Vet

CHI Pet Best Friend’s Grooming Kit By: Farouk Systems Distributor: TricorBraun A photo of a fire hydrant inspired a design that looks like the real thing but can be easily manufactured. World Series of Poker Energy Supplement By: Alix Technologies Distributor: TricorBraun For an energy drink in a package that looks like a stack of poker chips, the customer chose a simple cylinder with a closure that fits flush with the bottle shoulder. The full-body shrink sleeve is printed to look like the chips. The blank bottles are held in stock and labeled on demand.

Silver – Household Chemical & Auto

Swimway By: Haviland Distributor: Berlin Packaging The assignment was to update an existing 32-oz. HDPE package, including an enlargement of the neck finish to aid in production. SEPTEMBER 2011

Environmental Impact, FDA-Regulated

Stonyfield Farm Yogurt Cup Stonyfield Farm switched from a high-impact polystyrene yogurt cup to one containing 93% renewable polylactic acid plastic for a claimed 48% reduction in global warming potential. Steps are taken to ensure that an amount of corn equivalent to what is needed for Stonyfield’s cups is grown to sustainable agricultural standards.

Innovator of the Year, FDA-Regulated

Ice River Springs In 2010, Ice River Springs became the first bottled water producer in North America to manufacture its own recycled PET resin and the first water bottler worldwide to produce a 100% rPET bottle in-house. Its new recycling facility in Shelburne, ON, is said to offset more than 75 million lbs of CO2 per year.

Innovator of the Year, Non-FDA-Regulated

Ecovative Packaging Ecovative’s protective packaging for Steelcase office furniture is made from mushroom roots that bind locally sourced agricultural byproducts, such as cotton-seed hulls, into molds of any desired shape. The compostable packaging can be grown within seven days in dark indoor environments, using one-tenth the energy used for traditional synthetic materials.

Environmental Impact, Secondary/Large-Format

Cleaning Systems Inc. A car wash-chemical dispensing system replaces 30-gal. and 55-gal. drums with 1-gal. containers and film bags of ultra-concentrated product. The resulting net reductions in diesel fuel and gasoline for transport are said to be equivalent to a 232,000-kg CO2 reduction per 10,000 drums.

Environmental Impact, Non-FDA-Regulated

Ecologic Brands The Seventh Generation liquid detergent container features a compostable, molded-pulp outer shell made from 70% recycled cardboard and 30% old newspapers. The inner polyethylene pouch can be recycled with plastic grocery bags. Because the shells can be nested and the pouches transported flat, one truckload equals nine truckloads of rigid plastic containers.

NOT PICTURED Beyond the Package Award

APPE APPE’s investment of $14 million in its Beaune, France, PET recycling plant increased the facility’s capacity by 40% to 35,000 metric tons, making it the largest food-grade rPET producer in Europe. Environmental Impact, Secondary/Large-Format

Intelligent Thermal Solutions Intelligent Thermal Solutions’ 36-Liter EcoTherm refrigerated shipping containers can maintain an internal temperature of 2˚ C to 8˚ C for five days while using less material than a typical cold-chain shipper.

Environmental Impact, Packaging Machinery

Intralox The S7000 Switch conveyor system uses new roller-belt technology to gently handle film-only multipacks of bottled products at high throughput rates without jams or product damage. Environmental Impact, Packaging Machinery

OctoMAX System The OctoMAX monitoring system gives packagers optimal settings for stretch-wrap film use. With its variable film-tension settings, operators can program how much tension to apply at all stages of the wrap.

Beyond the Package Award

Starbucks Coffee Cup Starbucks Coffee Co., International Paper, Georgia-Pacific, and Mississippi River Pulp successfully partnered to develop cup-to-cup and cup-tonapkin recycling processes for singleserve, coated hot cups. The pilot program is in support of Starbucks’ goal to make 100% of the 4 billion cups it uses globally each year recyclable or reusable by 2015. PD

This package features nine colors printed on a lamination of polyethylene/foil/PET using Rotoflex inks and indirect laser engraved cylinders on a Ten press. Conventional screening in the dark blue produces a nice vignette, and the use of stochastic screening gives a smooth effect in the tonal areas. The judges commented that the dark and light blue background, clear type, and excellent rendering of the coffee granules made an attractive, bright package, and an outstanding example of what gravure can achieve.

Cel-Met and O2 Barrier metallized sealants permit downgauging of approximately 25% without compromising the barrier properties or performance of the barrier laminate. Both sealants reduce threeply structures to two plies while providing high barrier properties. Eliminating the need for a second pass in the lamination process also conserves adhesive and reduces energy requirements. Sustainability Award

The Perspective

why we love it

Novel package forms are not unusual in the Japanese market, where package design can be valued as highly as the functionality of the product. Worldwide, packaging is especially important in the hair styling market, which can be complex and confusing because of the wide range of product functionalities and ingredients. This extraordinary package stands out for its quirky design and ability to quickly communicate a key product ingredient— egg shell membrane, a moisturizer.

This clever package is unlike any others we’ve found in the Japanese hair care market, and it helps consumers understand what’s inside. It’s also pretty darn cute.

The market Mintel reported on 119 hair styling product introductions in Japan in 2010, and between January and July 2011 we’ve seen 81 additional new products. Having some sort of way to stand out in this crowded marketplace is essential.

the innovations This little pink egg not only tells the story of the ingredients inside, but also offers functionality. Note the indent toward the top of the egg (just like you might see on an actual hard-boiled egg after you peel it). That indent makes for a handy place for a finger or thumb to squeeze the egg and dispense the contents. The flip cap is on the bottom.

72

september 2011

Future Prospects The company, Demi Cosmetics, offers a line of hair styling products (five different varieties) under the Uevo brand, all in this unique egg-shaped container. Can the company further leverage the name and package shape to create more products in this packaging? Other companies with eggbased products also might benefit from this type of package. PD
