Who Has Seen It All? EDITORIAL DEPARTMENT

T

he truth is: no one. There is simply too much package design going on in the world to keep track of it all. Most of the time, designers are busy designing—not surfing the web to find striking, innovative, or exceptional package designs from the far corners of the earth. There’s only so much time in a day, and as there are many opportunities for category crosspollination, there are also many opportunities for cultural crosspollination. That’s how we hope to help, both here and in the future with online galleries of exceptional package design on www.packagedesignmag.com. Let’s not forget to mention the many sustainability initiatives being brought to market every year. Two awards programs in this issue are dedicated to more sustainable packaging (DuPont and Greener Package), while many other industry organizations have a special category for package designs or technologies that achieve significant sustainability gains. For as many package design innovations that we packed into this issue (196 images, to give you an idea), there are often many more award-winners to be found online at an organization’s website. Because space was limited, whenever possible we’ve supplied website addresses where you can find the complete listing of the award-winners and their images. In wading through the hundreds and hundreds of packages that won awards this year, I could not help but appreciate the many wonders of the Long John Silver’s Lobster Bites takeout package. This package combines fun, functionality, fabulous graphic effects, familiarity of form, brand reinforcement, product portability, recloseability—and it made me hungry for butterdipped lobster tail just looking at it! Of course, not every category can embrace the fun factor that is amplified here, but each category has a factor or two that could probably use some amplification. When you find examples of effective amplification, be sure to let us know about it so we can share it with our readers. In the meantime, please enjoy the many package design innovations we’ve collected here.

Best,

Ron 2

FORMULAS FOR SUCCESS Digital Executes High-End Design For Line of Nutritional Supplements WHEN BULLWATER HEALTH AND FITNESS, HOBOKEN, NJ,

wanted a high-end look for its Pomology line of nutritional products, the company turned to the design firm Selikoff+Company in New York City and eventually to Dion Label Printing in Westfield, MA, to execute the label for its top-selling anti-aging formula. Produced on an HP Indigo WS6000, the label was named the winner in the nutraceutical category in the Fourth Annual HP Indigo Digital Labels & Packaging Awards Contest at Labelexpo Americas 2010. The contest judges noted this label was printed on a surprising choice of substrate—metallic—rather than going with a simple foil hot stamp. The unique choice given to the customer by Dion Label Printing indicated ingenuity while imparting the softness of the matte effect the customer desired. Founded in 2005, Pomology strives to balance the purity and goodness of natural whole fruits and foods with advances in nutritional science in its unique line of premium antioxidant supplements, multivitamins, and super-fruit drink mixes. Pomology formulas combine pomegranates with other super-fruits and tailored nutritional ingredients to address specific health concerns effectively. The line is widely available across the country through well-regarded retailers like GNC, Sprouts, Whole Foods, and Target as well as at several online retailers like amazon.com and its home base at www.pomology.com. “Our product designations are straightforward,” says Brant Herman, v.p. of operations at Bullwater. “We make it easy for people to recognize what the supplement is for. Their names are condition specific. For example, formulas are designated antiaging, joint, energy, and so on.” Sophisticated design

The labels on the Pomology bottles, however, are anything but simple. Herman explains that their goal was to shake up the typically boring white-bottle look for supplements. “We asked our branding partner, Jonathan Selikoff, to take cues from higher end food and cosmetics packaging. We wanted to bring design aesthetics into our line.” Pomology bottles are black with black labels and a distinguishing color to differentiate each product. Text is knocked out from the black background. They also feature a background vignette and a burst logo to achieve an external watermark look. “We were able to create the look Bullwater Health wanted using HP Indigo digital printing,” says Stacy Santos, marketing manager at Dion. “Registration was an issue, and you could not avoid trapping lines conventionally. We were able to show Bullwater a press proof of the actual label. With digital printing, registration is precise. There are no trapping lines to see.”

Herman was pleased that he finally achieved the complete package design he desired. “Prior to this, we were never able to meet our designer’s vision,” he explains. Everyone wins

Dion Label Printing (www.dionlabel.com) specializes in pressuresensitive labels, shrink sleeves, tags, and tickets for industries ranging from health products to specialty foods to recreation. The company went digital in 2005 with the HP Indigo press ws4050. It has since added a WS6000 and replaced the ws4050 with a second WS6000. “Shorter runs, multiple SKUs, repeatable high-quality printing, and the ability for variable data have helped to maintain our steady growth,” says Randy Duhaime, general manager, Dion Label. “The addition of a second HP Indigo WS6000 will allow us to continue this trend with longer run lengths. WS6000 enhancements, such as its large repeat length and its ability to print on substrates from 12 microns to 450 microns, opens additional opportunities.” While quality of design execution was paramount for Herman, he also points out that digital production provides other significant benefits. He notes that they can purchase cost effective press runs between 10,000 and 50,000 labels depending on the product’s popularity. “An additional advantage,” says Herman, “is that we don’t have to stockpile labels and then throw them away if we need to make a change to ingredients or modify information. In our field, research keeps coming out, and if we find ingredients for a better formula we can make a quick update for accurate labeling.”

For child- and eco-friendliness, 25% PCR material was used in all of the line’s packaging except the pumps and closures. The Simpli Squeeze valve system on shampoo and conditioner allows squeezing the package with one hand while washing the baby with the other.

The heavy, square carafe is enhanced with designs screened on the side panels for a three-dimensional look. A pressure-sensitive label and a holographic sticker add color and style. The decorative maple leaf stopper top with melted wax is tamper evident. Printing is in four passes of ceramic ink, including gold.

We considered a celebration with cake and party hats, but decided free tooling would be even better. Transparent Container invented the combination run blister in 1980. At the time, our competition said it would never work. We proved it did work and then of course, everyone tried imitating us. But no one offers the low cost of entry, better speed to market, range of materials and gauges, production efficiencies and inventory flexibility like we do.

Heat seal tooling guaranteed to work. Live demonstrations at Booth #6110

Do your brand a favor and find out why Transparent Container’s combination run blister, ComboBlister,Ž is the best in the business. *Free blister mold tooling and 30% off heat seal tooling until Dec. 31, 2010

By: Sunshine Makers, LLC Distributor: Berlin Packaging

For the reIaunch of Simple Green Pet products, the distributor created a custom-handled gallon container with a matching trigger bottle. The handled gallon also features a notch along the bottom to aid the consumer when pouring.

á Sugar & Spice Gifts By: xCRUZA Design Studio

xCRUZA helped the brand owners redefine Sugar & Spice, which specializes in gourmet crackers, cookies, and candy. The glue-free packaging system consists of translucent polypropylene shells, internal micro-corrugated boards, and ribbon to tie different sizes together—an approach with flexibility for different quantities and seasonal variations.

Twist Candy Display Ü By: Cartocor S.A.

The goal was to solve—technically, using corrugated board—how to mimic the typical twist aspect of the candy packaging to attract attention. The system does away with internal reinforcements, requires less material, reduces costs, and cuts construction time as it is easy to assemble.

Ö New Four-Glued-Joint Package to Replace RSC By: Cartocor S.A.

Technology of the Year

The lamination of the 33% biobased content bags relies on an outer layer of polylactic acid (PLA) film converted by SKC Inc. from Ingeo resin supplied by NatureWorks LLC. Bryce adjusted printing inks, web tensions, process temperatures, and bonding processes to deliver a lamination that would provide adequate barrier properties for the snack.

By: Celplast Metallized Products Ltd./Vast Films Ltd.

Metacoat Roll Coating Technology

This technology allows coating and metallizing to occur in the same pass at standard metallizing speeds. A gravure coating station applies an acrylate and/or methacrylate liquid to the film surface and cures it immediately via electron beam exposure, and coating can occur before or after metallizing. Eliminating separate metallizing and coating passes improves economics as well as barrier properties.

WOW! WHAT A PACKAGE

Simplify, Simplify Water packaging at its most minimal

O

f all the consumer packaged goods on the market, it is likely that water is the one that is most discussed regarding its packaging. We have seen waters come in a wide range of packaging, with many of the newer ones having strong environmental positionings. Mintel research indicates that, although the primary factor for choosing a bottled water brand is price for U.S. consumers, 21% say they choose a bottled water because of its use of less plastic. And given that consumers’ interest in environmental issues has not dimmed during the recession, it behooves companies to look for ways to offer consumers more environmentally responsible products. In the cluttered bottled water market, we see a number of companies around the world offering consumers more environmentally friendly choices. Danone, for example, has turned to rPET (recycled PET) for its Volvic Eco Reserve water, sold in France. Not only is the Volvic bottle made from up to 40% rPET, but it is also in a large 8-liter bottle, further reducing plastic. Coca-Cola has had several initiatives, with its I-LOHAS water in Japan, which uses less material overall, and its U.S.-based PlantBottle, made from 30% plant-based materials. In the Netherlands, however, we find a smaller company going in a completely different direction regarding package form and material. This 250-ml SmartPack is a new shape of stand-up pouch for water consumption. The company, Dolphin Water (www.dolphinwater.nl), says the package was developed in conjunction with packaging company SmartPack. What’s unique about the package is that it is light, easy to use, and is 100% recyclable. The company says it also reduces waste—it certainly reduces shipping costs due to the lightweight nature of the pouch. What makes this pouch a bit different from others, and more appropriate for the bottled water market (or beverage market in general), is how it opens and how it is used by the consumer. It has a patented “tear and sip” tab that self-seals when not in use. The company believes this innovation makes the drink perfect for use during sporting activities. The package is a single material package with no label and no spout. You can sip from it, press the edges closed, and it will stay closed. Therefore, once opened, the pouch can be turned upside down and shaken without dripping. The company suggests that water is especially suitable for outdoor activities such as running or cycling. To that end, the company has been sponsoring sports events, such as triathlons, where it also supplies the water. The package, however, is suitable for a wider range of consumers, not just sports enthusiasts. The smaller size and light weight make it a good fit for children and their lunchboxes. Also, the light weight and easy grip-ability make it appropriate for older consumers as well. The Dolphin Water website claims that the package was 72

OCTOBER 2010 | PackageDesignMag.com

the first consumer package that was allowed to bear the mark “Nederland Schoon” (“Clean Netherlands”), an initiative from the Dutch government to support innovative package solutions that reduce waste in the environment. The package form could also contain flavored waters, iced teas, sports drinks, or other types of refreshment beverages. And although the package looks like it is relatively fragile, I’ve been transporting one in my computer bag and have shipped them (inadequately wrapped in bubble wrap) without incident, which seems to indicate that the pouch can withstand a fair amount of abuse. That’s worth a hearty yet minimalist “Wow!” ■
