EDITORIAL The need for packaging innovation has never been greater. The changing face of FMCG and retail is demanding ever more flexibility and speed. At the same time, consumers want to purchase, open, close, and interact with packaged goods in multiple new ways. And society as a whole rightly asks us to accomplish all this with zero negative environmental footprint. Against this backdrop, key arenas for sharing packaging technology, such as FachPack, play an even more indispensable role.

F

or as long as I can remember at Packaging Europe we’ve circled FachPack on the calendar as the focal point of our year in packaging. The essential exhibition for the Germany-Austria-Switzerland market, FachPack consistently makes a far wider impact – attracting a large international audience and showcasing the lion’s share of the year’s product launches and innovation. That’s why we have dedicated this special supplement to FachPack 2018. In the following pages you will find practical information about the event, an extended selection previewing many of the highlights from the expo floor, and FachPack in context. Cornelia Fehlner, FachPack’s incoming exhibition director, outlines her vision for this year’s show. Meanwhile, Thomas Reiner (chairman of dvi, the Deutsches Verpackungsinstitut, CEO of Berndt+ Partner and a judge of the Sustainability Awards 2018) addresses the fundamental issue looming over the whole packaging value chain this year: sustainability.

Cornelia Fehlner, Exhibition Director, NürnbergMesse

“TOMORROW BEGINS WHEN YOU CREATE IT” Cornelia Fehlner, FachPack exhibition director, speaks to Libby White Firstly, congratulations on your appointment as the FachPack exhibition director. As the new face of FachPack, can you please tell me what attracted you to the exhibition and why it is an important show for the packaging industry?

I

have always been fascinated by trade fairs. They are an important marketing tool. In my previous job as a business promoter for a town with a population of just under 50,000, I used to travel to trade fairs regularly. They are an ideal opportunity to get to know all the relevant market players and to network with them. FachPack is the best example. Over 1500 exhibitors and more than 40,000 trade visitors from various sectors travel from all over Europe to Nuremberg to take part. The exhibition booths, special shows and lecture forums during the three days of the event give them the chance to learn about innovative packaging solutions for consumer and industrial goods. FachPack covers all aspects of the four fields of packaging materials, packaging machines, package printing and finishing, and logistics systems. In short, Nuremberg is the meeting place for the European packaging industry. If you are in one of these areas, you need to be at FachPack.

What were your goals for the 2018 edition? How has it evolved and been improved upon from previous editions? We had a gap year in 2017, which we spent giving FachPack a facelift. In other words, we completely overhauled our brand identity, making it fresher and giving it a higher profile, as you can see from all of our advertising materials. It is also expressed in our new slogan, “Tomorrow begins when you create it”. After all, FachPack is a trade fair for achievers, it is pragmatic and focuses on solutions. FachPack is constantly growing. This year, for the first time, we are expanding to 12 exhibition halls. It is very important for us to be able to continue offering our customers clarity and guidance at the event. To ensure we maintain an overview with so many exhibitors, we completely revised the floor plan and divided it along subject lines, into one area for “Packaging and Processes” and another for “Technology and Processes”. What is new is that each of the twelve halls also has a quite specific key theme around which a significant number of exhibitors will design their presentations. Anyone attending FachPack with an interest in package printing, finishing and premium packaging, for example, should first visit our new set-up in Hall 8, with its high-quality layout. And visitors from the fields of medical technology, pharmaceuticals or cosmetics should head straight for Hall 3A, since that is where they will find the most products and services for their sectors. Packaging Europe | 5 |

We have also revised the product directory for FachPack and incorporated the latest technical trends to enable visitors to find what they want more quickly. In addition to looking for specific forms of packaging, e.g. jars or plastic tubes, it is also possible to search for packaging with particular features, e.g. smart packaging or packaging made of sustainable materials. “Find, don’t search” is the slogan used by the Industry Guide on the trade fair website. This means trade visitors can easily find the most important exhibitors, products, presentations and news items relating to their areas of interest and requirements at FachPack. Even before they arrive. The new Industry Guide helps to answer the question “Which industry do you want a packaging solution for?” There are seven fields to choose from: food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and medical technology, cosmetics, chemicals, automotive, consumer goods and industrial goods. A click will display all the exhibitors who offer products and/ or services for the selected industry, along with suitable product presentations in the supporting programme, and news texts on the website.

Can you tell me about the key trends influencing the industry and exhibitors this year? How do you address these issues and continue the conversation as an exhibition? The three mega-trends in the packaging industry that are reflected at FachPack this year are digitalisation, sustainability and design. A year before the fair, we started gathering materials on these key themes in the form of industry articles, infographics and videos in our new newsroom on the FachPack website (www.fachpack.de/en/news) and sharing them via our FachPack Twitter channel. These subjects will play an important part at many exhibition stands at the fair in September, as well as being seen and heard in the supporting programme. For example, there will be presentations in the new TechBox Forum in Hall 3 on “Digital twins”, “Intelligent packaging carriers” and “Data security on packaging lines”. A presentation in the PackBox Forum in Hall 7 will look at “sustainable trends in European packaging”, for example. Hall 7 is also host to the Marketplace: “Sustainability and plastics – no contradiction”. The new Hall 8 will focus on packaging design. Some 80 companies will introduce premium packaging options or offer solutions for package printing and finishing. A special show organized by bayern design will present around 30 innovative packaging exhibits. For a good overview of the entire supporting programme at FachPack, see our website: www.fachpack.de/programme

Are there any particular new highlights (for example conferences, sessions, dedicated areas) you would like to mention? FachPack is known for its attractive and extensive supporting programme, with special shows on specific topics, a range of lecture forums, lounges and the established German Packaging Award. Special highlights this year are the new Hall 8 that was mentioned earlier, which has been given a refined black-and-white design, with the special show on premium packaging. The popular PackBox forum, which had an audience of more than 4000 at the last FachPack in 2016, has grown further still, with the TechBox forum in Hall 3. This is where prominent industry partners will give presentations to share knowledge on packaging and | 6 | Packaging Europe

labelling technology, intralogistics and packaging logistics, and professional discussion will be welcome. The European trade and professional associations pavilion in Hall 6 is also new this year. Some ten professional associations and other entities representing professional interests in various European countries (e.g. Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, the Netherlands and Austria) will be presenting in the open and inviting special exhibition area, and will encourage participants to get to know them, share ideas and network.

FachPack aims to attract more international visitors. What are the main benefits of visiting this event? The range of products and services on offer at FachPack is unique. There is no other trade fair that covers the packaging value chain so extensively with its products and services: from packaging materials to packaging machines, package printing and finishing, and logistics systems. Every area is also represented in depth: for example, more than 200 exhibitors will present products and services on the subject of product finishing. FachPack is also known for its unique atmosphere where industry contacts can be cultivated, new deals prepared, and investment decisions made. We should also remember that FachPack is more than a trade fair. It is also a platform for sharing knowledge. Its extensive supporting programme offers information and inspiration on many industry topics of current interest. The economic region of Germany, Austria and Switzerland traditionally enjoys strong representation at FachPack. But the proportion of exhibitors from the other European countries is experiencing strong growth, currently accounting for about 35 percent of the total. FachPack is one of the most prominent of Europe’s leading fairs. It brings the European packaging industry together under one roof, which will also be highlighted this year by the presence of a pavilion for the European trade and professional associations to encourage discussion and networking. In brief, Europe is now at home at FachPack.

THE BUSINESS CASE FOR GREEN PACKAGING: SIX POINTS ON SUSTAINABILITY, THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND PLASTIC WASTE Dr Thomas Reiner, chair of the Deutsches Verpackungsinstitut, CEO of design agency Berndt+ Partner and a member of the judging panel for the 2018 Sustainability Awards, speaks to Elisabeth Skoda about the environmental challenges facing packaging today.

1. Plastic waste: A global solution to a global problem

F

igures by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation show that in 2013, around 78 million tons of plastics were used for packaging, 68 per cent of which were collected after use. Fourteen per cent respectively were recycled or incinerated, 40 per cent ended up in landfill. The remaining 32 per cent, however, ended up in nature – an equivalent of almost 25 million tons a year. A big share of this ends up in the world’s oceans, where it joins other plastic waste, for example from fishery. In total, this amounts to 150 million tons of plastic in the oceans. Even Arctic seawater can contain over 12,000 micro plastic parts, according to research recently published by the Alfred-Wegner-Institut (AWI) in Bremerhaven in Germany. Looking at the sources of used plastic packaging in the environment, 98 per cent of plastic waste in the oceans worldwide comes from countries outside Europe and the US. Between 88 and 95 per cent reach sea via only ten rivers, eight of which are in Asia. The top three are Yangtze, Indus and the Yellow River. Regardless of regional hotspots for uncontrolled plastic waste, the problem must be solved on a global level. Our commodity flows cover the entire planet just as oceans do. Whoever launches a product on the market should also take responsibility. This is not just a question of ethics, but of economy, offering obligations and opportunities. A central factor for the solution of this problem are technological solutions and the creation of a suitable infrastructure in the countries concerned, with systems for collection and recycling. Right now, three billion people don’t have any access to such systems. There are projects in place working towards fixing this, but they don’t go far enough. At the same time, it is key to consistently optimise plastic packaging for later recycling.

2. Sustainability does not come for free The solution of ecological problems requires a lot of effort and costs money. In order to achieve the desired results, we cannot rely on industry and consumers across the world acting responsibly. Past experience shows that existing product alternatives cannot compete on the market without incentives. The business risk associated with the development of alternative solutions poses a real hurdle, as does the buying behaviour of customers, which, contrary to what

opinion polls may suggest, hasn’t shown a surge in demand for environmentally friendly products. Research has shown that sustainable consumerism can only prevail if it is promoted by the state, for example with energy saving home appliances or light bulbs. Let’s accept reality: where it is left to the market whether green products prevail or not, sustainable products never make it beyond niche status. State regulation can take different forms. Bans are one option, like the ones the EU has introduced for single use cutlery or plastic straws. Another option is taxes, as is being currently discussed for all plastic packaging. A third option uses parameters and quotas for recycling. The German Packaging Act, coming into force on 1 January 2019, stipulates pre-defined quota to reach an increase in recycling from the previously required 36 per cent to 63 per cent in the year 2022. The new EU plastics strategy stipulates that all plastics packaging must be recyclable by 2030. Similar measures are planned for the US, where the American Chemistry Council’s Plastics Division recently published its plans. Recycling within the framework of a circular economy is the only long term, sustainable solution in order to reduce plastics waste in nature. The EU has recognised this with its new plastics strategy. The necessary collection and recycling systems go together with a value rating system which is bureaucratic and costly but will be a valuable guidance tool. Currently, recycling systems such as ‘Der grüne Punkt’ in Germany only consider the disposal costs of a pack. In the future, recycling properties also have to be considered. Packaging that can easily be recycled receives a bonus, poorly recyclable packaging receives a malus. The European Union has announced a suggestion to such a system for the coming year. The EU’s plastic strategy has recognised that solving this problem can be a lucrative business model. Investing in innovative, new technologies protects citizens and environment, keeps industry competitive and creates new growth opportunities. The EU plastics strategy was not devised by the EU’s Environmental Bureau alone, but also included business departments. This happened for a reason. According to recent reports, the Chinese share of patents granted worldwide for circular economy technology grew on average by 13 per cent per year between 2010 and 2014. Packaging Europe | 15 |

Due to the fact mentioned above that three billion people don’t have access to controlled waste disposal, we have to export and share our own, innovative systems. Regulation and aid have to go hand in hand, especially in regions where public money is scarce.

3. The supply chain must accept responsibility Whether or not we will manage to get to grips with the global problem of uncontrolled plastic waste depends on companies within the supply chain who must provide solutions with innovations and by involving consumers. This includes product and packaging manufacturers as well as retail. Innovations in technology, material and processes are the foundation of the circular economy, creating the necessary possibilities and recycling convenience for consumers. Only solutions that are easy to carry out and that fit seamlessly into peoples’ lives will be successful. According to a current survey in Germany, almost 60 per cent feel that they’re not sufficiently informed about packaging. Therefore, it is comes as no surprise that packaging in general has a bad image and is wrongly judged with regards to its eco balance. At the same time, over 30 per cent of people surveyed failed to correctly dispose of used packaging, a figure that rose to over 45 per cent in the age group of under 24s. Retail, product- and packaging manufacturers should provide more and better information. Brands should routinely consider packaging as part of their product and make information about materials, functionality and recyclability more accessible for everybody. Retail should use its strong, direct contact with consumers and push forward innovative collection and recycling solutions. First and foremost, thinking and acting in closed loops has to be implemented and established as standard. Sustainability is more than disposal, it is key to look at the big picture.

4. Circular economy and closed loops The currently common distinction of single use and reusable packaging does not go far enough. Each pack should be collected and recycled after consumption. A good example for how innovative, sustainable solutions can be pushed by the supply chain is the PET bottle. The immediate collection through retail in the shape of deposit return schemes resulted in a particular purity of collected materials, which makes recycling simple and efficient. Even though this is not feasible for all types of packaging, there are plenty of opportunities that are currently not being taken advantage of, for example in the areas of plastic trays and cups.

Dr Thomas Reiner, chair of the Deutsches Verpackungsinstitut, CEO of design agency Berndt+ Partner

| 16 | Packaging Europe

This also solves the problem mentioned above that solutions should be convenient for the consumer. In times of communicative overload, educating consumers requires a lot of effort. Transparent, closed loops focusing on recyclable materials and automated separation technologies appear to be the most productive solution. The basis for a successful circular economy remains the practical, efficient recyclability of products.

5. Design for recycling: post-consumption is pre-consumption In the past, packs were developed according to different criteria. Cost (for purchase and disposal, the total cost of ownership), performance (machinability, barrier, resealability) and environment. Up until recently, environmental consideration played a small part. Following a short (and very expensive) phase of environmental performance evaluations, some retail brands focus on CO2 and carbon footprint. Experience shows that it is difficult and almost impossible to grasp environmental impact in its totality and use as development criteria for packaging. In recent years, the discussion focus has shifted from climate change to the waste problem. The ‘Design for Recycling’ principle seizes this point by not focusing on diverse environmental or disposal costs, but recyclability. This gives the topic of packaging sustainability an entirely new drive. Design for Recycling puts the recyclability of a pack in focus from the very start. Engineers and designers now start development with the end in mind. Design agency Berndt+Partner has focused on sustainable solutions for ten years, and founder Prof. Dieter Berndt was involved in the first packaging directive at the beginning of the 1990s. For us, design for recycling in the context of convenient technological solutions is a key tool for avoiding future problems. Marketers need clear guidelines and evaluation criteria, which is being worked out with the bonus-malus system mentioned above. Furthermore, recyclates for high value applications have to actually be used. Berndt+Partner is running several pilot projects. In a multi-client study, we examined the use of recyclates for high value packaging applications. The result showed that the issue wasn’t demand from brand owners, but the supply. The recyclate should become a business model for disposal firms, and it absolutely has the potential to do so. Design for Recycling can create or optimise requirements, by securing recyclate quality and quantity.

6. Beyond the circular economy A recent survey of European brand manufacturers showed that sustainability has become a number one trend topic in 2018. It would not go far enough to reduce this mega trend to environmental protection or the circular economy. It involves a lot more, including second or third generation bio plastics and renewable resources in general. Last but not least, we also have to focus on consumer protection. Berndt + Partner therefore adds a fourth R to the classic three (reduce, recycle, renewables): risk reduction. We introduced a traffic light system which reduces material risks and avoid critical substances, even if they aren’t regulated or banned yet. At the same time, we use a sustainability business tool, which means optimising packaging sustainability in all steps of development.

ZÜND: NEW SOLUTIONS FOR INDUSTRIAL FINISHING The focus of the Zünd exhibit is on modular automation in digital cutting. The leading supplier of digital cutting systems will present, among other things, a new automation solution for fully integrated industrial finishing.

T

he versatility of Zünd’s finishing solutions provides numerous options for sustainable productivity increases with minimal demands in personnel. The product offering for finishing includes an automatic tool changer, collaborative robotic material handling, and production lines with fully automated loading/stacking systems. At FachPack 2018 (Hall 7a / Stand 628) Zünd introduces a brand-new development in automated material handling designed specifically for industrial applications. With a maximum stack height of 1.5 m (5 ft), the system offers longer continuous production time and helps make highvolume finishing even more efficient and profitable. To illustrate high-throughput processing of corrugated board and foam even without automated material-handling, Zünd has a G3 cutting system on display configured for tandem operation. The tandem setup enables a continuous production workflow in which loading and processing occur at the same time. In addition, the cutter is equipped with an RML high-performance router and automated tool changer ARC. The latter holds up to eight different bits, which greatly facilitates jobs requiring multiple bit types and sizes. The operator never loses track of the tooling and can reduce the time spent in changeovers to a minimum for optimal use of the cutting system.

Roman Hasler, segment manager Packaging, explains: “Packaging providers are forced to produce under permanent time and margin pressures. With our modular cutting and material-handling solutions, we can meet individual needs for automation and assist our customers in making their digital finishing operations even more efficient and profitable.” An example is collaborative robot technology. Zünd demonstrates a possible application with a robotic device from Universal Robots. The robotic arm picks cut pieces off a Zünd S3 cutter and places them in predefined spots. Intelligent production planning, control, and monitoring are critical for creating productive finishing workflows. The software suite Zünd Cut Center ZCC provides a virtual control center for fully integrated digital finishing. With new features such as high-speed registration methods, even simpler production planning, and a dashboard for easy monitoring of Zünd cutter performance, ZCC Version 3 offers unprecedented flexibility and even more user-friendly operation. SCHUBERT PRESENTS NEW CARTONPACKER

For the first time at the FachPack trade fair in Nuremberg, Schubert will be presenting its new Cartonpacker – a machine from Schubert’s new lightline range, in Hall 1 / Stand 219.

T

he Cartonpacker consists of a single module and handles carton packaging in the smallest of spaces – with all the expected high quality and efficiency of a TLM system. The company now provides solution with a fast delivery time for packaging tasks that require less flexibility, i.e. that consist of only a few product and format variants. Schubert’s new lightline machine range includes packaging machines for standard packaging tasks with preconfigured system components. Along with the “lightline Cartonpacker”, these also address pick-and-place applications with the “lightline Pickerline” and packaging in flowwrap bags with the “lightline Flowmodul”. Schubert is offering its new, preconfigured, very compact case packer in four variants for different types of cartons – boxes, boxes with lids, wrap-around boxes or RSC cartons. Depending on the type of carton, the machine is equipped with a suitable closing tool and laid out for one product at a time, i.e. for bags, boxes, bottles or cans. The lightline Cartonpacker offers flexibility in terms of format variants for every type of carton and product. The machine design distinguishes itself by reduction down to essential functions only, which results in lower energy consumption and therefore reduced costs.

| 22 | Packaging Europe

Customers in all sectors benefit from very short delivery times and fast commissioning with the lightline Cartonpacker. Since the machine is delivered as a unit, installation is streamlined. Assembly and commissioning can be implemented within a week. This enables customers to respond quickly to market demands. With the Schubert lightline range, the company is targeting customers with packaging tasks that require less flexibility but who also attach great importance to high-quality machine engineering. Proven functional principles and intelligent machine control ensure reliable operation with high system availability over the machine’s entire service life.

All functions in a single module The case packer presented at the fair will package marzipan chocolate boxes into RSC folding boxes. With a throughput of 125 boxes of chocolates per minute, the machine can process up to six different product formats. In a single machine frame (3,500 x 2,500 mm), RSC boxes are erected, filled with chocolate boxes and closed. At the heart of the machine are three F2 robots from Schubert.

MONDI: PACKAGING INNOVATIONS AND SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS AT THREE TRADE FAIRS

Mondi will present a range of innovations that fulfil packaging trends and the growing demand for sustainable solutions at three major industry events this September and October: FachPack, Scanpack and Pack Expo.

M

ondi will showcase many of its best-selling products as well as its latest solutions for e-commerce packaging, convenience, premium design and other trends. Sustainability of raw materials, manufacturing processes and products is also an integral part of all of Mondi’s business areas. Mondi is further supporting sustainability in the industry by sponsoring the Packaging Europe Sustainability Awards 2018, which will take place in conjunction with the Scanpack fair.

| 24 | Packaging Europe

At all three fairs, Mondi will exhibit a new packaging laminate – BarrierPack Recyclable – that can help reduce plastic packaging waste through recycling. This plastic laminate for pre-made pouches and FFS roll-stock is fully recyclable without any compromise of quality or functionality. BarrierPack Recyclable won the 2018 Plastics Recycling Europe Award for “Best Technology Innovation in Plastics Recycling.” Mondi will also launch an advanced version of its perFORMing brand: a natural brown formable paper for shallow tray applications such as cheese, meat

or salmon. perFORMing combines two Mondi materials – Advantage Formable paper and a new barrier coating produced in-house – in a patented new thermoformable packaging solution that offers excellent packaging properties and optimal formability. Compared to other trays, it uses up to 70% less plastic and its paper grade is naturally brown instead of dyed brown. Mondi’s improved SPLASHBAG will also be a highlight at all three fairs. BEUMER GROUP TO SHOWCASE PACKAGING TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS BEUMER Group will showcase tailor-made solutions for consumer goods – from the filling of bags up to packaged product stacks ready for transport, including control and customer support.

AT

its booth (Hall 1 / 121) BEUMER Group will show its competence in the field of packaging technology. The full liner delivers everything from one single source: The customer has only one single point of contact and avoids vendor interactions. The system supplier dimensions the performance of the single machines and components as well as the high-level control in an optimum way. Thus the operator receives a complete line with optimum throughput. The BEUMER fillpac R filling machine fills bulk materials such as cement or building materials and other industrial pulverised goods into bags in an efficient and gentle way. It can fill very fine to very coarse materials into different bag formats and types, such as valve bottom bags and flat valve bags. BEUMER Group has now complemented the rotary filling machine with a BEUMER bag placer and a ream magazine. Due to its modular design, the BEUMER fillpac R can be easily integrated and adjusted with existing packaging lines. The highly efficient form fill seal system BEUMER fillpac FFS is used in the chemical and petrochemical industries. It forms bags from a prefabricated tubular PE film, fills them with the product of the customer and seals them. BEUMER Group introduces the BEUMER fillpac FFS form fill seal system both for the high-capacity range of up to 2,600 bags per hour and for low throughputs up to 1,800 or 2,500 bags per hour. Depending on the customers’ requirements the suitable machine performance class can be selected from the extended product range. Both the BEUMER fillpac R and the BEUMER fillpac FFS are equipped with a specialised weighing unit which ensures the correct quantity of the filled material.

In the next phase, the bags are stacked on pallets. For this, BEUMER Group offers the BEUMER paletpac high-capacity palletiser. It stacks even sensitive and valuable products as well as products with special flow characteristics in a gentle and efficient manner. Depending on the product requirements, it can be equipped with a clamp-type turning device or a twin-belt turning device. BEUMER Group offers the BEUMER robotpac, a space-saving articulated robot, for palletising cartons, boxes, canisters or trays. This fully automatic articulated robot is able to solve even complex palletising and de-palletising challenges reliably and efficiently. BEUMER has developed fully automatic gripping systems that are easily exchangeable and suitable for each item to be packed. The BEUMER stretch hood high capacity packaging system is at the heart of the packaging lines. In logistic centres for example, it covers the mixed pallet of merchandise with a highly elastic film hood, but also filled and palletised bags, boxes of detergent, buckets of paint or storage jars stacked on pallets. During shipment and outside storage, the merchandise is protected reliably against environmental influences such as sunlight, dirt and humidity. This is important for the operators who need their products to be transported reliably and in perfect condition to the customers. The BEUMER bag-in-bag offered by the system provider packages one or several filled paper bags quickly and reliably in a weather-resistant plastic film. This ensures that the contents are perfectly protected against moisture, dust, insect infestation and other environmental factors when they are transported or stored. The system can be easily integrated in existing filling or packaging systems.

ZANDERS PRESENTS NEW FLUOROCARBON-FREE BARRIER PAPER ZANBARRIER NGR Zanders will be presenting its very latest proprietary product, a natural barrier paper called Zanbarrier NGR in Hall 8 / 506. Due to a special manufacturing process, the use of fluorocarbon or other chemicals is completely unnecessary to ensure its function as a barrier.

Z

anders will also be showcasing its versatile range of label paper and cartonboard, including the high-gloss qualities of the Chromolux premium brand, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Visitors to FachPack are invited to toast the anniversary with Zanders in Hall 8 at Stand 8-506.

The abbreviation “NGR” in Zanbarrier NGR stands for “natural grease resistant”. In the unique production process of Zanbarrier NGR, the cellulose fibers are subjected to an incredibly intense grinding process over several refining stages. The surface area of the fibre is greatly enlarged, so that the absorption of water into the fibres is greatly increased creating a gel-like fibre mass - in technical jargon “slow draining” because the fibres actually feel greasy after refining. The cellulose fibres treated in this way form a tight, strong cross-linked sheet structure on the paper machine thus creating a finished paper which has a 100% natural barrier to oil and grease without the use of fluorocarbon or other chemicals. The applications for the new Zanbarrier NGR are identical to those of conventional barrier papers. In this way, all flexible food packaging requiring oil and grease-resistance as well as wet-strength papers is fully catered for. These include fast food packaging such as doner kebab, french fries, butter wrappers, bread roll bags, food labels as well as pizza and confectionery cartons. Packaging Europe | 35 |

SÜDPACK PRESENTS LATEST PEELABLE AND RESEALABLE FILM RANGE Südpack Verpackungen GmbH & Co. KG demonstrates how its packaging offers added value for products, consumers and the environment. The motto of the booth in Hall 7 / 242, consequently is “Respect generates sustainability”.

H

igh-performance films like Veraplex offer maximum protection for perishable products, they can be produced with up to 50 per cent less material. SÜDPACK will also present its latest development in the field of peelable films at FachPack: Smart Peel can be easily opened using the SÜDPACK peel system and thanks to its white colouring, offers plenty of space for attractive designs. Sustainability is a top priority at the family-owned SÜDPACK company – and this didn’t just start with the current debate about plastic packaging and its impact on global ecosystems. “Protecting products, people and the environment has always been a key factor in our work,” explains SÜDPACK Managing Director Johannes Remmele. “All three aspects are closely interlinked. Our film solutions protect fresh food from spoiling. This is not only good for consumers, who expect high product quality. It also conserves valuable resources and contributes significantly to minimising food waste and reducing CO2 emissions.” According to the expert, reducing material input and film thickness while ensuring consistently high product protection make a significant contribution to sustainability in the packaging industry. For example, the Veraplex and Veraplex Plus films exhibited at FachPack require up to 50 per cent less material compared to previous solutions. Veraplex film is ideal for top webs and flowpacks. The extremely tear-resistant Veraplex Plus is used as a top web for large packaging. Despite reduced material input, both films offer excellent technical properties including high barrier. SÜDPACK also uses less material for its resealable Multipeel range. This series of resealable films covers a variety of uses, from top webs to flow packs. Multipeel xPET offers excellent sealing properties as low as 145°C | 38 | Packaging Europe

for use in mono APET applications. It also ensures secure sealing on crystalline, silicone or antiblock treated PET and is available without reseal as Peel xPET. Combining the best of two worlds – sustainability and convenience – SÜDPACK Multiclose is a resealable solution made from a top and bottom film. Multiclose requires less material than conventional resealable hard-shell packaging for cheese or meat products. It’s also convenient. The wide pull tab and SÜDPACK’s own Easy Open sealed seam make Multiclose easy to reseal: the top and bottom film do not have to be perfectly aligned to protect the contents of the package. Smart Peel, another practical solution by the Ochsenhausen-based company, is making its debut at FachPack. With its high white coverage, this peel solution protects sensitive contents, such as dairy products and fruit spreads, from external influences without the need for additional white printing. The white coloration also offers plenty of space for attractive designs. It safely seals different packaging formats ranging from fruit jam to buckets for the catering industry. Consumers can open the packaging easily without tearing, thanks to SÜDPACK’s own peel system. Along with state-of-the-art products, SÜDPACK offers customers a wide range of supplemental services. For example, the company uses its own laser system to enhance film packaging as a way to make life easier for consumers and attract attention at the point of sale. SÜDPACK technicians can pre-perforate composite films for easy opening, a selective gas exchange or integrating add-on elements such as valves. These finished films can be processed on standard packaging machines.

BIOPLASTICS: SOLUTIONS FOR EVERY APPLICATION Perfect packaging is a harmonious combination of appearance, material and message. In packaging design, aspects of sustainability, such as recyclability or resource efficiency are becoming increasingly important. There are many innovative and powerful bioplastics available that contribute to this idea and that can be processed into customised packaging.

B

ioplastics are biodegradable, biobased or both. All of these types of bioplastics are suitable for various manufacturing processes and enable packaging in a multitude of shapes. But, when it comes to selecting a biobased or biodegradable plastic resin, the application and further the type of disposal have to be considered. Sole biobased plastics like Green PE or Bio-PET can be recycled in existing post-consumer waste streams. Especially with drop-in biobased plastics*, sustainable concepts can be implemented in two ways. First, a bottle made of biobased plastics consists of renewable raw materials and secondly, it can be recycled using existing recycling systems. In turn, the packaging itself becomes a valuable material which can be reused in the production of other products. Hence, creating a self-contained cycle modelled on nature. An example for the versatility of bioplastics packaging is the GREENline series from the company Rebhan from Stockheim in Upper Franconia, Germany. The plastic packaging specialist focuses on primary packaging in the cosmetics industry. In order to be able to offer its customers sustainable packaging products, Rebhan now relies on various materials from FKuR, one of the leading suppliers of bioplastics for flexible and rigid packaging solutions. FKuR advised Rebhan on the selection of the most suitable bioplastics for the specific requirements and offered

Innovative and high-performing bioplastics allow packaging in different shapes like this compostable tray made from Bio-Flex®.

extensive technical support, from the project implementation phase through marketing upon launch, with special consideration of the bioplastic aspect. Depending on customer requirements, for example, completely or partially biobased plastics are used for various flacons and bottles. The company now offers transparent, stretch blow molded bottles made of Eastlon by Fenc, a partially biobased PET distributed by FKuR. Depending on geometric requirements or for more flexible products, Braskem’s Green PE is used in the extrusion blow molding process. Like Eastlon, the polyethylene is chemically identical to conventional grades and can therefore be easily recycled. Both materials are, therefore, also non-biodegradable. If the customer requires biodegradable/compostable products, Rebhan has recourse to Bio-Flex® PLA blends from FKuR with different flexibility, which can also be excellently extrusion-blown. Bio-Flex® consists mainly of natural raw materials. The bioplastic specialist FKuR is a full-range supplier and will be presenting its broad product portfolio of biobased thermoplastic materials at FachPack and Scanpack. *Drop-in biobased plastics are counterparts to conventional plastics and can be processed without any adjustments to machines and processes.

WORLD PREMIERE OF THE HERMA 500 Embracing web compatibility and Ethernet control for interconnectivity, the new HERMA 500 is a highly integrated, high-performance applicator.

U

nder the motto “Leading performance – smartly connected”, the selfadhesive technology expert HERMA is introducing the newly developed applicator generation at this year’s Fachpack exhibition in Nuremberg, Germany, in Hall 3a / 236. It marks a step forward as the packaging and labelling sector moves towards adopting smart factory principles. Its intelligent features satisfy the criteria imposed by Industry 4.0.

Remote control The successor to the HERMA 400 labeller offers compelling connectivity, intuitive operation, highly flexible integration options, and outstanding performance parameters. HERMA has delivered an innovation with the new machine’s online functionality, as Martin Kühl, head of HERMA’s Labelling Machines Division, explains, “In the future users will be able to parametrise, maintain, and operate the applicator as necessary by way of the internet – quickly and simply. And the labeller itself responds to remote control as well, all of which further helps to reduce setup and maintenance times, and therefore costs.” It can also be connected to an upstream controller by way of OPC UA and Industrial Ethernet interfaces without any additional components. “For users and operators alike, this capability fosters the more efficient control of production processes, which is especially relevant in the case of complex packaging lines,” he continues. Thanks to compliance with UL and CSA requirements, the new labeller can be used immediately and without any modifications in both the USA and Canada.

that is easy to incorporate, even if very little space is available. Repositioning the labeller within a line, or moving it to a different one, can be accomplished in just a few simple steps. With regards to geometry and physical interfaces, moreover, the HERMA 500 is largely backwards compatible with its predecessor. Replacing an old applicator could hardly be easier – simply take it out and install the new model. And it’s a job worth doing, simply in view of the substantially enhanced performance. Even with mechanical unwind and rewind units, the HERMA 500 can provide a feed rate of 50 metres a minute – the previous limit was 40 metres. “From the overall perspective of connectivity, flexibility, and ease of use, the performance scope of the HERMA 500 is unprecedented worldwide,” he concludes.

No more than three clicks The 4.3-inch colour touchscreen rotates in three 90° increments to ensure optimum visibility in any situation. It responds reliably to finger pressure, irrespective of whether or not the operator is wearing gloves. The menu is configured so that the user can always navigate to the desired menu item with three clicks at most. In addition, the HERMA 500 is preconfigured to show messages and other plain text in more than 30 languages. Its easy-to-read touchscreen is also ideal for viewing user manuals, threading schemes, and help topics. “The necessary information is presented to the operator at the machine, which is a very efficient way of enabling users to help themselves,” remarks Martin Kühl.

Flexibility within a very small footprint Like its predecessor, the new HERMA 500 does completely without a switch cabinet. The control unit is directly integrated in the device itself. This solution gives rise to a compact applicator Packaging Europe | 43 |

A NEW LEVEL OF FOOD SAFETY – HENKEL’S TECHNOMELT SUPRA PRO RANGE Henkel is introducing the Technomelt Supra Pro Range, a new line of hotmelt adhesive products for end-of-line packaging – in time for the Fachpack 2018. As a leading manufacturer of adhesives, the company offers a range of food-safe solutions that meet the highest consumer safety expectations.

H

enkel’s focus in product development revolves around the needs of consumers, in order to help packaging suppliers, food producers and retailers to increase consumer confidence in the safety of their products. A recent study carried out by the University of Göttingen on behalf of the German consumer advice center Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband e.V. shows that one in four consumers (24 per cent) believes that food producers only make a small or very small contribution to the safety of products. For the food retail industry even one third of the respondents (35 per cent) hold this view. The new Technomelt Supra Pro Range meets the regulatory standards for end-of-line packaging while reaching new levels in food safety. Henkel has also expanded its Food Contact Statements for these products by including additional qualitative and quantitative tests for traces of mineral oils, promoting security within this contentious topic of discussion. With the adhesives from the Technomelt Supra Pro Range Henkel is launching a line of innovative high-performance hotmelts. These products offer food safety advantages, particularly in the case of “sensitive foods” such as rice, pasta, cornflakes, or cereals. These foods have a long shelf life and are therefore prone to a higher risk of contamination with mineral oil particles migrating to food from the inner and outer packaging. The risk of contamination also increases when temperatures rise. Furthermore, Henkel has expanded its Food Contact Statements for the Technomelt Supra Pro products with additional qualitative and quantitative tests for mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH). This provides assurance to retailers and brand owners that the products comply with all mandatory legal requirements. Henkel carefully selects the raw materials used and

| 44 | Packaging Europe

carries out a detailed risk assessment to offer end consumers a high level of food safety. Technomelt Supra Pro is also a step change in terms of technical adhesive performance. The products enable more efficient processing. Among other benefits, they are composed of “free-flowing” granules, facilitating automatic adhesive feeding. “While developing the Technomelt Supra Pro Range, we made a point of optimising the properties of the various product range adhesives for each of their respective areas of use,” explains Schott. The Technomelt Supra Pro Range includes solutions for all areas of end-of-line packaging, such as for sealing boxes and cartons as well as for attaching straws and erecting trays. The line of products also includes low-temperature adhesives. The use of adhesives with a low application temperature of 100°C, instead of the usual 165°C to 170°C for hotmelts, makes it possible for users to save energy and thus increase production process sustainability. The Technomelt Supra Pro Range’s multipurpose adhesive also offers high line speeds without any “stringing” of the adhesive. This leads to an increase in process efficiency – also, because cleaning cycles can be prolonged. Packaging with challenging surfaces, such as polyethylene or those for flour or sugar, can also be sealed. Moreover, these adhesives are suitable for packaging products containing essential oils. “As Europe’s leading trade fair for packaging, processes, and technology, we believe Fachpack is the ideal platform to introduce our various Technomelt Supra Pro Range adhesive solutions to our customers and to advise them on the suitable solutions for their individual applications. You can find us at Booth 118 in Hall 2,” concludes Schott.

he machine from the Loesch R-Series is designed for the packaging of small-sized chocolate products in premium fold wraps. With the horizontal flow pack of the F-Series, the firm has a concept solution that combines efficiency and performance with low packaging material costs in its range. “The RCB-HS for small chocolate products and bars combines a premium look and maximum product protection in an end-to-end tightly sealed pack,” said CEO Dr Thomas Cord. “The extremely compact RCB-HS machine platform is designed for top performance and handles the primary packaging in modern chocolate production reliably and flexibly.” The innovative concept of the Franconian experts in special purpose machinery was presented at interpack 2017 and since then has undergone continuous advanced development. “Since the recent successful market launch of the RCB-HS, the platform has established itself in the market,” reported Cord proudly. “The concept has met with enthusiastic response in the Asian market.” Consumers can enjoy products with longer shelf lives and an optimised taste and texture experience. The chocolate products are presented in the premium fold wrap look that has made LoeschPack a global market leader in this segment for decades. “With excellent performance of up to 600 packaged products per minute,

the RCB-HS is unrivalled in the chocolate sector. In a variant for open folding, we even achieve speeds of up to 800 products per minute,” said Cord. The firm is systematically working to further develop the R-Series and expanding its product range with regard to the format range, folding, and performance parameters, according to Cord. The RCB-HS is a continuously operating machine that produces the fold wrap in a wrapping head and circumferentially heat-seals or cold-seals the packaging material. The variant with cold seal-capable film has the advantages of gentle material handling and excellent usability in machines, while the heat-seal variant uses less expensive packaging material. The heat bars always seal film against film, ensuring extremely tight packaging and preventing thermal damage to the products. This eliminates the need to use hot-setting glue when closing the packaging. In the next step, folding elements produce the premium fold wrap. For an optimal packaging look, small heat bars carefully affix the sealed film areas to the underside of the packaging in the discharge area. “Our conscious decision to dispense with glue to seal the packaging reduces machine contamination, minimises operating costs and simplifies machine operation,” said Cord. An integrated opening aid makes it easy to open the packaging.

GENERATION PACKAGE

RKW presents its Generation PackAge portfolio including films, nets and also nonwovens for a broad range of applications in Hall 9 /310.

R

KW’s Generation PackAge products include films, nonwovens and nets that are tailored to meet the requirements of both customers and end consumers in terms of efficiency, convenience, product protection by extending shelf life and improving transport protection, and sustainability. The Generation PackAge portfolio encompasses multipack films for the beverage and food industry, diverse household products such as waste bags, base material for the production of labels and tags, FPO® paper-like films with a high mineral fill of more than 50 per cent, and nonwovens for packaging applications (RKW HyJet®). Transport and pallet protection films, in particular stretch-hood films, ensure safe transportation of customer products. Plastic sacks for powdery goods, barrier and lamination films as well as pallet nets complete the offering. The product range is as broad as the industries and application possibilities. Sustainability is one of the most important topics in the plastic industry, especially in the packaging market. This not only applies to the material used to make the packaging, but also to its entire life cycle. In all phases of a product’s life from its inception to the end of its life, RKW strives to protect natural resources, to reduce emissions, to avoid waste and environmental pollution, and to optimise logistics. RKW meets the challenge of combining product protection, convenience for the consumer and eco-friendliness by smart packaging concepts based on innovative technology. Film thickness reduction, for example, helps to save resources: less material usage, less waste and less transportation. The film thickness, and thus the hood weight of RKW’s shrink-hood films, which protect pallets and goods to be conveyed, was reduced over the past 25 years by 40 per cent, and RKW’s stretchhood films achieved a reduction of raw material consumption of 30 per cent over the past 15 years. | 48 | Packaging Europe

RKW multipack films feature convenient and easy opening for consumers, as well as high performance and outstanding printing quality for our customers. RKW has now developed multipack films, which can be digitally printed with the HP Indigo system without the need for a primer, as required with conventional films. The newly-developed film without primer is a mono material and can therefore be easily recycled. Moreover, the quality of the recycled material is better than that of multipack films using primer. RKW’s mono material FPO® for aluminum-free wrapping of butter and other dairy products is made from polymers and more than 50 per cent mineral fillers. The clever combination of materials ensures that, correctly converted, the package protects sensitive products effectively from light, oxygen, and water vapor. It features outstanding printability and a pleasing, paper-like look and feel. Moreover, thanks to its high mineral filler content, less polyolefin is used compared to traditional packaging options, thus helping to save resources and to reduce the carbon footprint. RKW ProVent® is RKW’s innovative self-venting packaging solution that keeps powdery goods safe and dry. Customers profit from a range of benefits including a significantly extended storage life, robustness, tear resistance, safe outdoor storage, and clean handling. At the same time, RKW ProVent® sacks are much more environmentally friendly than paper sacks, consuming 14 per cent less energy than paper sacks during production. As no composite materials are used, these bags can be easily and completely recycled. Recently, RKW launched the first T-shirt starseal waste bags for organic waste that are fully compostable and consist of more than 50 per cent from renewable materials. The bags are certified according to the European standard EN13432 by the DIN Certco institute in Berlin (Germany). Combining practical features with benefits in terms of sustainability, the new bags are an environmentally friendly alternative that makes the disposal of organic waste much more convenient.

NEW STAND OUT SQUARE CAN BY SONOCO Sustainable packaging solutions will be at the heart of Sonoco Europe’s exhibit. The design of the booth in Hall 5 / 247 mimics a life-like environment consisting of a kitchen area and a supermarket corner. A ‘Wall of Recyclability’ shows how Sonoco reduces material consumption and ensures high recycling rates for its packaging solutions. One of the product highlights at the trade fair is the brand new Hermetic SquareCan, which offers producers of sensitive goods like nuts or coffee a stand-out, nearly square packaging solution with excellent design opportunities.

“F

or Sonoco, producing consumer packaging means listening closely to what consumers say, but also understanding what our clients need,” said Séan Cairns, VP and general manager Sonoco Consumer Products. “The perfect package does not merely protect its content from things like moisture, or handling during distribution; it must also be convenient and stylish – while having as small an ecological footprint as possible.” At the FachPack, Sonoco invites visitors to see and feel the advantages of its packaging solutions first-hand, and in the environment where consumers use them most. In the kitchen area, samples of clients’ products range from muesli to mini sausages, and highlight what Sonoco’s packaging is all about: combining optimal product protection with advanced design features. In the supermarket corner, Sonoco demonstrates how elaborate decorations, individual packaging shapes and high-quality materials can be used to catch consumers’ attention.

Introducing the Hermetic SquareCan The Hermetic SquareCan, which will debut at the FachPack, is a prime example of a packaging solution that combines design and functionality. With their unusual rectangular format, Sonoco’s SquareCans stand out at the point of sale. Printable lids produced with in-mould labelling technology (IML), such as a convenient hinge lid, offer additional printing space for brand messaging, or for extra content, such as recipes and health tips. The virtually square shape of the

| 50 | Packaging Europe

rigid paperboard container also increases the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of logistics processes, as it optimally uses the available space during transport and in storage facilities. Sonoco produces the Hermetic SquareCan in a newly developed process that considerably increases the container’s stability. In addition, a sealed-on aluminium membrane turns the new solution into an air- and gastight vault perfect for sensitive products like coffee, nuts or even baby food products, including powdered infant formula (PIF).

Sustainability as a crucial factor When it comes to creating new packaging solutions or improving existing ones, Sonoco’s development team always considers the use of recycled materials and possibilities for recycling after use, in addition to features that will keep the product safe and attract consumers. A printable paper-bottom for instance, further enhances the recyclability of the new Hermetic SquareCan. “We put sustainability at the heart of our product development”, explains Andreas Rothschink, Sales Director at Sonoco Consumer Products Europe. “The use of IML technology, for example, enables us to produce monomaterial plastic packaging where both the container and the lid are made of polypropylene and thus have a recycling rate of close to 100 percent. At the same time, we produce our rigid paper containers using recycled paperboard as the main material.”

FAST EVACUATION TIMES FOR MORE PACKAGES PER DAY Everyone is talking about deceleration, but not the new rotary vane vacuum pump, which Gebr. Becker GmbH is exhibiting at this year’s fair. Thanks to the shortest pump-down times, the Becker U 5.300 increases efficiency and productivity and at the same time reduces process costs. The new vacuum pump is thus a targeted response to the demands of our time.

T

he growing challenges that food packaging has to deal with due to this trend also place enormous demands on modern machines. This calls for even more efficient packaging processes and the development of increasingly productive plants and systems that, for example, package meat, sausage and cheese faster in vacuum packaging, or keep fish and seafood fresh in a modified atmosphere. “Standard vacuum pumps can no longer significantly reduce evacuation times, so at Becker we questioned every known part of a vacuum pump and replaced it with better components and solutions. The result: The new U 5. series from Becker. Detailed test series confirm that with at least seven per cent faster evacuation times compared to commercially available vacuum pumps, they are among the most efficient high-performance vacuum pumps for the food packaging market,” says Frank Rischewski, Project Manager R&D-P New Product Projects, who was instrumental in the development. The objective of food processing companies is to make the cycles in the packaging process as fast and economical as possible. “Every tenth of a second is hard cash,” says Sebastian Lehmann, Market Manager Packaging at Gebr. Becker. And adds, “With the Becker U 5.300, we are consistently expanding the series and offering our customers a ground-breaking product that has been specifically developed to meet their wishes and requirements, especially in the food packaging market.” Compact structural dimensions ensure the smallest footprint and easy integration into packing machines without expensive special-purpose machinery.

Optimised rated motor power reduces power consumption and guarantees energy-efficient performance. Highly efficient air de-oiling elements ensure a long service life and service intervals. Smooth product surfaces facilitate quick and easy hygienic cleaning. In the U 5.-O2-Pack version, it also provides a safe and easy way to pack red meat and seafood with concentrated oxygen. Thanks to lifelong oil lubrication, this pump version does not require an oil change. It has the same length as the standard unit in the U 5. series. This means no product extension through additional separation and simple integration into the packaging machines. For even more speed, high operational reliability and availability, the Becker U 5.300 can also be optionally used as a partially centralized pumping station solution in combination with a Becker RBP booster pump for fast highperformance packaging processes. The efficient pumps in the U 5. series are also ideally suited for use with and without a Becker RBP booster pump in central vacuum systems. A vacuum pump is essential for the vacuum supply in a packaging machine. It evacuates air from the vacuum chamber and is responsible for obtaining the lowest possible pressure and/or the highest possible vacuum in the packaging after heat-sealing it. Airtight sealed packaging ensures high quality with a long shelf life. In order to create a protective atmosphere in the packaging, a gas can additionally be jetted into the packaging. This process maintains the freshness, appearance and taste of food. Packaging Europe | 53 |

STRAPPING INNOVATION UNVEILED Mosca is showcasing a full range of strapping solutions for a variety of applications at FachPack 2018. Celebrating its premiere at Stand 513 in Hall 4a, the compact EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV is designed for maximum efficiency and high performance – especially for strapping pallets with reduced strap tension. The machine’s “big sister,” the KZV-111, is ideal for preparing shipments containing bulky and heavy goods on pallets. The EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H shows how strapping technology can be integrated into Industry 4.0 set-ups. A network connection ensures that the machine can be checked and controlled at any time from any location.

T

he new EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV will be presented for the first time at FachPack 2018. The machine is specially designed for products with feet such as dollies, wire mesh containers or pallets requiring lower strap tension of max. 450 N. Due to the lower strap tension and force-limited traversing units, the machine, which is supplied CE-compliant from the factory, does not require a safety enclosure. This significantly lowers the purchase price. The operator is not required to leave the safety zone during machine operation and can feed packages faster. The EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV comes equipped with the patented Mosca SoniXs ultrasonic sealing unit that is positioned to the side of the product to be strapped. This ensures protection against contamination by falling particles or dripping liquids. It also allows a lower conveyor height enabling the machine to strap pallets on the ground. The movable sealing unit has a stroke of up to 340mm.

The “big sister” to the EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6 KR-ZV, the KZV-111 is ideal for vertical strapping of bulky pallets. It also has a movable tongue that slides under the product. The sealing unit is positioned above the package on a sliding plate, which makes it easy to handle packages higher than 350mm. The KZV111 can be integrated into existing production lines and guarantees seamless package processing.

High speed for bulky goods The EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H is ideal when it comes to fast horizontal strapping of bulky items like furniture or white goods. The machine triple straps up to 180 packages per hour, making it suitable for handling high-volume production runs. Heavy goods are best strapped horizontally, which is why the MS-6-H features a side sealing unit with a vertically sliding frame capable of safely strapping packages at up to ten different heights. The machine can be optionally equipped with a horizontal sealing unit to strap packages that are not optimally aligned. Setting the strapping position is easy: Either the operator selects a suitable program via touch panel or the EVOLUTION SoniXs MS-6-H uses sensors to determine product height and completes the strapping operation according to user-defined parameters.

Network solutions for Industry 4.0 Mosca engineered the fully automatic EVOLUTION SoniXs TR-6 Pro for integration into existing packaging lines. The high-performance machine straps up to 45 packages per minute and is best suited for tightly-scheduled logistics operations. The optional double strap dispenser reduces set-up time by automatically switching from an empty roll to a spare coil during operation. The EVOLUTION SoniXs TR-6 Pro bridges the gap between high-performance strapping technology and Industry 4.0 with a network interface that enables the user to check and regulate machine operation as needed at any time from any location. The networking options are not limited to the machine itself. The model on display at FachPack 2018 features a strap coil with RFID tags. This enables the coil to transfer information to a company’s enterprise resource planning system, determine stock levels, and autonomously place reorders. At the same time, employees can track automated processes via the ERP system.

FINISHING WITH UV AND LED TECHNOLOGY UV system manufacturer IST Metz will be presenting a broad product portfolio of UV lamp and LED solutions for the finishing of packaging. The manufacturer of UV curing systems will be exhibiting together with PrintCity Alliance in Hall 7a / 138.

UV

lamp systems are used primarily for print jobs with very exacting and diverse requirements. These are mainly highly-finished products such as packaging in the luxury segment, but also involve print jobs with stringent safety requirements in production – such as printing food packaging, for example. The BLK lamp system from IST Metz, which was developed for the highest industrial requirements, is predestined for this. Compared to conventional UV systems, the BLK LAMPcure offers an extraordinary increase in drying performance without increasing the UV lamp output. This means more productivity with reduced operating costs. A clever modular basic concept in combination with its extremely robust and compact design allow the user maximum flexibility and versatility with the new LEDcure LED system. The system is freely scalable in length and can be adapted to all machine formats and installation situations. This makes it possible to use an LEDcure unit at different positions on a machine. A specialty of UV printing is the curing of inks and coatings under oxygenreduced conditions. In this form of UV curing, oxygen is replaced by an inert gas, usually nitrogen. IST Metz’s inert UV systems are gaining in importance, especially in packaging printing, because they enable products with flawless sensory characteristics while at the same time complying with the legal requirements for food packaging.

PACKSYNERGY TO EXHIBIT WHOLESALE AND LOGISTICS EXPERTISE PackSynergy’s enlarged exhibition presentation at this year’s FachPack will be located in Hall 6 / 211.

ON

the occasion of its 20th anniversary, the network will be focusing on machine solutions, load safety, best ways to pack and ship industrial goods and special solutions, for example for bicycles. The network also provides a special offer for other wholesalers who would like to counteract the pressure of investor conglomerates and multi-branching with a successful alternative. 14 regional market leaders from Denmark, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, Slovenia, Spain and the Czech Republic form the PackSynergy network with over 35 locations. Since it was found in 1998, the association of medium-sized entrepreneurs has been able to look back on continuous growth, as CEO Thomas A. Baur confirms with one restriction: “We are not looking back, but moving forward. But we have the experience of 20 successful years back. It strengthens the network, is an important basis for its reliability and impressively demonstrates the added value for members and customers.”

Processes, Machine Solutions, Automation At the FachPack 2018, the network presents itself on an enlarged area. “For example, we can make our competence for process, machine and automation solutions around packaging even clearer,” says Baur, who is also looking forward to new products from renowned suppliers such as Sealed Air, Maillis/ Siat, FP International, Ranpak and Fanuc. “From Fanuc, for example, we show the collaborative robot CR-4iA, which with its extreme compactness is ideal for packaging in a tight space,” says Baur. Load SecuringAnother focus is on cargo security. Here the network presents its digital measuring system for the objective verification of the required load

| 62 | Packaging Europe

security when using stretch film. “We offer the measuring system as a service, which means for customers that they do not have to invest to improve their cargo safety. On the contrary: By optimizing the measuring system, we enable our customers to save up to 50 percent on their material, “says Mr. Baur. PackSynergy member Wepa Verpackungen also offers basic training in load securing with its technical “Melior seminars”. “We want to sensitize all logisticians to devote themselves even more to safety on the road, sea and airfreight traffic - because the load securing does not only start taking place on the loading area,” explains Dirk Dietzel, managing director of Wepa Verpackungen. In addition, Dietzel draws attention to the new EU Directive 2014/47 on load securing of transport packaging, which has been in force since May 2018. “It requires every cargo to be tested and certified for its cargo stability. At the same time it transfers the liability of the transport companies to the client “, says the Wepa-managing director.

Special solution for bicycles According to the managing partner Thomas Horna from the network member Horna Verpackungen is “Europe’s leading packaging wholesaler in the field of bicycle packaging been operating successfully on the market for more than 20 years”. Under the slogan “Take a ride on the safe side”, Horna offers tailor-made solutions for the packaging, padding and shipping of bicycles and wheels. “We have the right solution for every bike, we ship free of charge and we have bundled our offer online under the motto “Bike Packaging,” emphasizes Horna.

Opportunities for dealers According to CEO Thomas A. Baur, the PackSynergy network provides a special offer as a whole - not only for customers, but also for others, owner-managed, regional market leaders from all over Europe. “PackSynergy is the only successful alternative in the face of growing pressure from investor-driven large conglomerates and their affiliate strategy. In times of global, as well as national and regional networking, one remains a lone fighter on the track. Anyone who, as a medium-sized packaging wholesaler or logistics expert, does not want his company, his employees and his life’s work to be dissolved in a conglomerate, needs a functioning, proven network based on personal trust, common interests, combined purchasing strength and strong know-how to present a vital counter model.” At the fair, Baur hopes to establish new contacts with regional market leaders from all over Europe, but especially from Germany and Austria. “The cake is here - and at the round PackSynergy table, a few new partners are still finding their lucrative place,” says Baur, adding: “Meeting point is in hall 6, booth 211.”

EFFICIENT AND SAFE BONDING WHEN APPLYING HOT MELT MANUALLY With adhesive applications carried out by hand, it is not always easy to make the bonding process safe and efficient.

T

he Germany-based adhesive specialist Bühnen offers a range of solutions that optimise manual hot melt applications, for example in the bonding of cardboard boxes and in the production of displays. The company recently launched two new hot melt glue guns incorporating innovative technology: the HB 240 and HB 250. The special feature of the two new devices for the manual application of hot melt sticks is a patented “inner life”, developed in Germany, by which the trigger pull forces are reduced by at least 30 per cent. This leads to fatigue-free work, thus also increasing the motivation of employees, for example in the production of displays. An additional asset is the feature that the trigger distance to the handle can be adjusted to different hand sizes. “In combination with the high melting capacity, the mechanical stroke limitation, and an extremely stable temperature control with status indicator, high productivity and process reliability are achieved with manual gluing,” says Christoph Zunder, Head of Product Management at Bühnen. The HB 250, the

most powerful device in its class, offers an extremely precise temperature regulation and, with a capacity of up to 400W, enables the processing of 12mm hot melt sticks at up to 230°C. At Stand 2-306 the trade fair team will be advising in detail on bonding with hot melts in the packaging industry – not only with regard to manual application. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the operation of the new hot melt guns, as well as a hot melt bulk tank system type HB 5010 live on site.

ECOCOOL PRESENTS SOLUTIONS FOR THE FOOD AND PHARMACEUTICALS SECTORS The manufacture of packaging for temperature-sensitive goods is a technically demanding field, and one in which Ecocool GmbH has become highly specialised. The Bremerhaven-based manufacturer will be showcasing its extensive product portfolio focusing on the core markets of food and pharmaceuticals.

L

ocated in Hall 9 / 237, the trade fair booth will focus on two areas. The first is refrigerated packaging for the shipping of online food orders – a sector that is currently booming. Here, the company will be presenting the Coolmailer and the new Smartcooler, two products that Ecocool has designed for online retailers operating in or seeking to enter the sector. Our second focus will be on pharmaceutical boxes for the GDP-compliant distribution of medicines. “Among our solutions for this sector is a logistics concept – developed in collaboration with other companies – for the safe and economical distribution of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals during the final leg of the delivery process,” explains Dr Florian Siedenburg, Managing Director of Ecocool GmbH. This project for Germany’s online pharmacy sector is to be presented in more detail at the trade fair. “To create a sound technological basis for these supply chain concepts, we conduct extensive climate chamber testing as well as real transportation. We then analyse with the aid of data collection instruments.” These temperature data loggers are not only used by Ecocool, but also actively distributed. At this year’s Fachpack, the Bremerhaven-based specialist for cooling packaging will be presenting the product ranges of its partners SWiTrace and IMEC. These will be complemented by Ecocool’s own range of thermal covers. These are designed to protect temperature-sensitive goods during shipping, especially by air. The innovative Smartcooler refrigerated packaging, which Ecocool launched in June 2018, is set to be among this year’s trade fair highlights. Made of a | 64 | Packaging Europe

synthetic fleece and fitted with cooling elements, the Smartcooler insulating bag facilitates excellent temperature control. It is also sustainable, with 80 percent of the packaging consisting of recycled PET bottles. The Smartcooler’s core consists of an insulating fleece made of recycled materials. This is surrounded by a special, thin PE envelope to turn it into a bag. The system is closed by means of the sticker provided. A more inexpensive version of the Smartcooler is Ecocool’s Coolmailer, a thermal envelope already well-established on the market. Ecocool’s pharmaceutical boxes for the 2 – 8°C temperature range offer GDP-compliant, pre-qualified cooling packaging suitable for the shipping of high-quality refrigerated pharmaceutical products. The boxes are able to keep products refrigerated for 72 – 96 hours. They are available in five standard sizes ranging from 2.5 – 53 litres. The low-cost standard version is based on a specific combination of water-based cooling elements. Where a higher cooling performance or longer cooling periods are required, the company can offer a version equipped with +5°C PCM cooling elements. Ecocool will be using FachPack not only to showcase its refrigerated packaging products, but also to exhibit its range of temperature data loggers. These can be inserted with the packaged goods and serve to reliably and continually monitor and record temperature values during shipment. These data loggers are the only way of verifiably recording whether, during their transport and storage, temperature-sensitive products were exposed to temperatures that could have potentially negative effects on their quality.
