Rock Around the C hristmas Tree
How to pick the right tree for you and your family this holiday season By Keith Loria
Carroll’s Christmas Tree Farm in Lawrenceville offers trees and decorating options for the season.
he National Christmas Tree Association notes that getting a live Christmas tree supports life by absorbing carbon dioxide and other gases and emitting fresh oxygen. Farms that grow Christmas trees stabilize soil, protect water supplies and provide refuge for wildlife while creating scenic green belts. Real Christmas trees are grown on farms just like any other agricultural crop. To ensure a constant supply, tree growers plant one to three new seedlings for every tree they harvest. On the other hand, artificial trees are a petroleum-based product. The average family uses an artificial tree for only six to nine years before throwing it away, where it will remain in a landfill for years after disposal. Bonnie and Shawn Carroll, owners of Carroll’s Christmas Tree Farm in Lawrenceville, have been in the Christmas tree business for 24 years. “At our farm you can find Douglas fir, Frasier fir and Concolor fir trees. They each have a different needle, look and smell,” Bonnie Carroll says. “When selecting a tree you should check that the branches are sturdy enough for your decorations, you should make sure the needles are colorful and there are no brown spots.” In addition to selling trees, the farm sells wreaths, roping, mantle pieces, kissing balls, ribbon, tree lights and tree stands. The farm also provides a complete holiday experience. “We have beautiful, vintage horse-drawn sleds for families who wish to take Christmas photos,” Ms. Carroll says. “We also offer hot chocolate, coffee and free candy canes and coloring books for the kids.” As a family-run business, McLaughlin Tree Farm at 1312 Old York Road, Robbinsville, understands the importance of celebrating the holiday season with family. “We personalize the customer experience by offering numerous amenities complimentary, such as refreshments, hayrides, tree baling and carrying and loading of your tree,” says Greg McLaughlin. “We take the time to educate customers on the differences between the various trees and how trees in general play a role in our culture and lives. It is festive, fun and always more than just cutting down the tree.” The farm offers approximately 3,000 trees ranging in size from 5 to 8 feet in height, with some reaching up to 15 feet. There are seven
different species available and all are professionally sheared. Once a tree is brought home and put inside, Mr. McLaughlin says it is important to ensure daily watering. “Keep the temperature down in the room the tree is located within or crack a window,” he says. “If several days pass between cutting the tree and putting it up, it may be necessary to clean the bottom or make a thin, fresh cut. This opens the pores that absorb water.” Remember, since the tree is not actively growing, it is not using water, thus it will only take up water until it is fully saturated. Here are some of the top Christmas tree choices available, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. Balsam fir. These trees have needles that are three-quarters of an inch, to 1-and 1-a half inches in length, and last a very long time. They have a dark-green hue and retain their pleasing fragrance throughout the Christmas season. Concolor fir. These small, narrow needles are around 1- to 1-and-a-half inches in length. They have good foliage color, good needle retention, and a pleasing shape and aroma. Douglas fir. One of the most popular choices for families in New Jersey, the trees offer soft needles that are dark green to blue green in color and are approximately 1 to 1-and-ahalf inches in length. Douglas fir needles radiate in all directions from the branch. When crushed, these needles have a sweet fragrance. Fraser fir. The Fraser fir branches turn slightly upward, have a pleasant scent and offer good form and needle retention, perfect for hanging ornaments. Noble fir. Known for its beauty, the noble fir has a long lifespan, and its stiff branches make it a good tree for heavy ornaments, as well as providing excellent greenery for wreaths and garland. White pine. The largest pine in the U.S., the white pine has soft, flexible needles and is bluish-green in color. White pines have good needle retention, but have little aroma. White spruce. The white spruce is excellent for ornaments. It is bluish-green in color and has excellent foliage and a good, natural shape. The needle retention is better in a white spruce than it is among other spruces.
