Morris Hall Meadows By Nell Whiting Elders who are facing the prospect of needing skilled nursing care often do not know where to turn. Morris Hall Meadows at Lawrenceville was conceived and designed to alleviate this concern and to create a place that is home. Morris Hall Meadows is an extension of the St. Lawrence Rehabilitation/Morris Hall campus conveniently located in Lawrenceville, on Franklin Corner Road near the intersection of I-95 and 206. Specifically developed with innovative ideas about engaging the mind, body and spirit of our Elders, Morris Hall Meadows is an Elder-centered model that places the maximum possible decision-making authority into the hands of the Elders or those closest to them. “We follow The GREEN HOUSE® model developed by Dr. Bill Thomas,“ says Soni Pahade, Director of Admissions and Marketing. “We emphasize three core values: a Meaningful Life, Empowered Staff and a Real Home. This means focusing on community, compassion and comfort for every individual, in an environment that provides outstanding medical physical and emotional support.” “Morris Hall Meadows Elders live in actual homes with significantly more privacy and comfort. Each of the thoughtfully designed singlelevel homes has ten private bed-and-bath suites overlooking beautifully landscaped grounds. Elders control their own daily routines and rhythms for waking, sleeping, meals, and alone time. Each has a say in how they live and has direct involvement in his or her own care plan.” Pahade continues, “At the center of each home is a spacious hearth room with a fireplace facing a comfortable patio, a shared dining room, an open kitchen, as well as a spa area and a cozy den , which is accessible to Elders and their families at all times. Our goal is for everyone to enjoy formal and informal opportunities for engagement inside and outside of the home.” “Elders’ health care, wellness and social needs are supported attentively by a multi-disciplinary staff of professionals. This care team devotes themselves to knowing each individual and their families with the aim of providing the utmost care and attention,” says Pahade.

First opened in March 2016, Morris Hall Meadows is still expanding. Three homes are currently occupied and a forth slated to open in December. The homes offer 24-hour skilled nursing, on-site physical and occupational therapy as well as end of life and palliative care. There is no entry fee and a flat daily rate covers all services. “Living in an environment where families are an integral part of the care team and are welcome at any time, where Elders help plan meals and govern their own daily routines, Morris Hall Meadows offers Elders the future of skilled nursing home living where the emphasis is on living. We all deserve to be respected and engaged at every stage of life.” says Pahade.

Get Creative this Summer at Arts Camp

By Keith Loria Dancers ages 11 to 18 can improve their skills at the Rutgers Summer Dance Conservatory.

ot every child is a wannabe sports star or a lover of all things outdoors, and that can present a challenge when looking for a summer camp. But fear not, because there are art-focused camps out there that help kids discover and explore their creative sides. “Summer arts camps give students the unique opportunity to explore an art form free from pressures and distractions common to the school year,” says Christopher Kenniff, director of Mason Gross Extension Division, the community arts division of Mason Gross at Rutgers University. “There’s no homework and they get to meet and hang out with kids who share the same artistic passion. It’s like spending their entire school day in the elective class. It’s pure fun.”

is the collegiate atmosphere we provide,” Mr. Kenniff says. “Students spend their camp day on a university arts campus and get a taste for college life, especially if they choose to stay at the dorms.” Participants range in ability from intermediate to advanced. Generally, the camp aims to provide access to students of varying ability and age levels within each camp. For example, the dance conservatory offers pre-conservatory, junior and senior levels to accommodate a variety of age and experience levels.

Nutrition Matters Being at camp doesn’t have to mean kids can’t eat healthy foods

etting your children to eat healthy can often be a chore, but when your kids are spending their days (and sometimes nights) away from you at camp during the summer months, it becomes that much more difficult to track their eating patterns and make sure they aren’t eating just junk. For those kids who go away for weeks, parents normally send care packages full of baked goods and treats, and rarely are fruits or vegetables in those “fun” boxes that are ripped open each day. That’s why nutritionists understand that getting kids to eat the healthy foods they need while at camp is a challenge, and they urge camps to do their part in helping. Getting kids to eat enough vegetables, or any vegetables for that matter, can be very difficult, especially when Mom and Dad are not around to encourage them. Let’s be honest, it’s that rare child who actually prefers vegetables over sweets and junk food, so odds are there will be more apple pie and fewer apples while away at summer camp. Rachel Cuomo, registered dietitian and founder of the private practice Kiwi Nutrition Counseling in Princeton, says parents should pack healthy, and fun, snacks and lunches for kids. “The main reason kids opt for junk food is it seems more appealing,” Ms. Cuomo says. “Cut sandwiches into fun shapes with cookie cutters, send homemade, makeyour-own pita pizzas or black bean tacos, send vegetables and fruit slices with healthy dips. Showing kids how healthy foods help to build bone, muscle, and improve sport performance is a great way to make those foods more appealing. Discuss how treats are OK, but to only choose treats that they really love so that they are worth it.” Andy Pritikin, owner and director of Bordentown-based Liberty Lake Day Camp, says providing healthy food options aligns with its mission and goals to do everything it can to grow healthy children and smart citizens. Parents are things, which we are happy to do. We also do have our staff very aware of what is going into their children’s bodies.
