The History of Freehold
The Lenni Lenape Native Americans were the earliest known people to live in the area that became Freehold. The Lenape were a huntergatherer society. They were prolific hunters of small game and birds. They were also skilled fisherman, and were known to harvest vast amounts of clams from the bays and inlets on the Jersey Shore. They also practiced some agriculture to augment their food supply. During this time, an important crossroad of two major Lenape trails was located in the area of Freehold.

burned down. Freehold also has a relatively forgotten but important place in the history of the bicycle. Cycling champion Arthur Augustus Zimmerman resided in the town during his racing career in the 1880s and 1890s, and from 1896–1899 operated the Zimmerman Bicycle Co.; the company’s bicycles were known as the “Zimmy.” Today, Freehold Borough is home to the Metz Bicycle Museum, where the only extant “Zimmy” can be seen. Freehold divided At the beginning of the 20th century, Freehold was an increasingly divided community. The issue of local tax dollars, used as funding for public works and infrastructure projects, was the primary point of contention. The Freeholders living in the downtown area, around the courthouse had very different ideas about how to spend public money compared to the Freeholders living in the surrounding farmland. Tension within the community increased greatly in 1916 when a severe polio epidemic swept through Freehold. After contentious public debate, a referendum was held to on the future of Freehold, and voters overwhelmingly decided to split the town into two separate municipalities. On April 15, 1919, Freehold Borough formally separated from Freehold Township. Freehold residents generally refer to the different municipalities simply as the Borough and the Township. The Borough, the downtown area around the courthouse, retained all the existing government buildings around Court Street and Main Street. The Borough also kept the designation as county seat. Freehold Township, the farming communities that surrounded the courthouse, set up a new Continued from page 13 (Dine Downtown Freehold)

city hall complex on Schanck Road. The Township completely encircles the Borough. On September 7, 1926, Freehold Borough annexed additional territory from the Township. The Borough in the 20th century Freehold Borough initially prospered in the early 20th century. However, by mid-century, the Borough began to decline as downtown areas across the country shrank, and suburban areas began growing. In 1961, the A & M Karagheusian rug factory closed. This factory had long been the largest employer in the area, and its closure had a devastating effect on the economic stability of the Borough. In 1992, Freehold Borough received a priceless gift of renewal and stewardship in the formation of The Freehold Center Management Corporation, the nonprofit entity established by ordinance to manage the municipality’s special improvement district. The Freehold Center Management Corporation known today as DowntownFreehold.com is founded upon the recognition that Downtown Freehold is the heart of Freehold Borough, and Western Monmouth County. Downtown Freehold works on behalf of all those who live, work or invest in the Downtown to achieve the following goals: Foster the downtown’s economic development, Encourage the downtown’s revitalization, Preserve the downtown’s historic past. The Borough with the help of Downtownfreehold.com managed to turn around its economic decline by establishing the downtown area as a center for restaurants and nightlife. Several wellknown local restaurants on Main Street are now crowded every night of the week. – From Wikipedia

Art
in the
Borough
by Lynn Reich
The Borough of Freehold has had its share of resident artists. One such artist, named Wini Smart was commissioned to paint a collage about the history of Freehold on the interior wall of our town hall, in the late 1970’s. It is still there. Several local art teachers have made Freehold their home. There are many musicians who call Freehold their hometown, but few are as notable as Bruce Springsteen, Rock and Roll icon. Architects have affected the look of our town through the years as they designed homes for our wellto-do citizens. However, in 2011, a group of interested citizens decided that it was time to organize an arts council to bring together like-minded people to inspire and promote the arts. Thus, the Freehold Borough Arts Council was created. To herald in the FBAC with a bang, fund raising enable the arts council to hire a muralist who would design and supervise the painting of a very large mural downtown. The design was solicited from the local citizenry. The public was invited to paint the sketched-out forms. Children and adults all participated in the painting that depicted various scenes from our town’s history. The mural cause quite a stir and liven up the vacant business on which it was painted. This effort created a wonderful buzz for the new Freehold Borough Arts Council.
Now, the FBAC and its partners are hosting numerous events in Freehold. The St. Patty’s Day Parade, which traverses 1 ½ blocks is billed as the “States Shortest Parade”, but there is no shortage of celebration. On Sunday evenings in the Summer and Fall, a Jazz & Blues series entertains restaurant patrons. The Freehold Art Gallery has been open for 2 years and is providing exhibit space for locale artists. The Downtown Concert Series at St. Peter’s Church is a venue that welcomes unique musicians from around the world. The Arcadian Chorale, under the direction of the renowned Marina Alexander, entertains at holiday time at St. Rose RC Church. All year long the Center Players, Freehold’s resident community theatre, brings plays and readings to its venue at 35 South Street. The Freehold Center Management Corporation also known as DowntownFreehold.com organizes many events throughout the year, A Jazz and Blues Festival in May, weekly popular concerts on Thursday evenings, and a Freehold Idol singing competition on Wednesdays in the summer, Wednesday concerts in September and October, many holiday events, and much more. Never have the Arts been more vibrant than they are currently in Freehold. Support from Downtown Freehold has encouraged the FBAC to be an economic generator which brings more people into our “hometown”. Promoting the Arts in Freehold has been a “win-win” situation for the whole town.

According to the NJDOT’s website, Transit Village designation creates incentives for municipalities to redevelop or revitalize the areas around transit stations using design standards of transit-oriented development (TOD). TOD helps municipalities create attractive, vibrant, pedestrianfriendly neighborhoods where people can live, shop, work and play without relying on automobiles.

recommended improvements to parking, pedestrian and bicycle facilities,” cites Jeffrey Perlman, Freehold’s project head at NJTPA. This project will also update the site design, architectural and parking guidelines in accordance with the state’s Transit Village Designation Criteria. “The Transit Village Initiative is an excellent model because it encourages growth in areas where infrastructure and public transit already exist. Municipalities must meet the Transit Village Criteria and complete a Transit Village Application in order to be designated a Transit Village,” says Perlman. In addition to community revitalization, the Transit Village Initiative seeks to reduce traffic congestion and improve air quality by increasing transit ridership. Studies have shown that adding residential housing options within walking distance of a transit facility increases transit ridership more than any other type of development. Therefore, one of the goals of the Transit Village Initiative is to bring more housing, businesses, and people into the neighborhoods around transit stations. “Freehold is a town with deep community ties, diversity, and close-knit neighborhoods. One of the major things lacking in recent years has been an influx of tax ratables. We are looking for public-private partnerships that can bring in property tax revenue to relieve the burden on current local taxpayers, and improve the town,” says Higgins. “We plan to make Freehold Borough an even better place through these efforts.” “One thing we can all count on: change will occur,” predicts Mayor Higgins. “The vision report ensures that those who care most about a vibrant, healthy, and prosperous Freehold Borough are holding the reins when that time comes.” To read the full Vision Report, go to this link: http://www.freeholdboroughnj.gov/Borough-Vision-Report.pdf
