Cardboard Gold Discovered In Ohio Attic A treasure trove of over 700 century-old, well-preserved baseball cards discovered in the attic of a Defiance, Ohio house earlier this year – and that could have landed in the trash with other items being tossed out - now is valued at several million dollars. One expert described the discovery as “…the most significant find of vintage baseball cards ever reported….” The first 37 cards from the trove, with names still familiar to today’s baseball fans, such as Ty Cobb, Cy Young and Honus Wagner, are expected to sell for a combined total of more than $500,000 in a public auction to be conducted in Baltimore, Maryland and online on August 2, 2012 by Heritage Auctions (www.HA.com), the world’s largest collectibles auctioneer. Other cards from the discovery will be offered in future auctions and private sales by Heritage. “The cards are all from a rare series known by collectors as E98 that were issued around 1910. They were acquired at the time for promotional purposes by Carl Hench, a German immigrant who owned Hench’s Meat Market &

late grandfather’s house when they found the cards in a box under an old dollhouse in the attic,” said Chris Ivy, Heritage’s Director of Sports Auctions in Dallas, Texas. When they discovered them in the attic, cousins Karla Hench and Karl Kissner didn’t know if the cards were genuine because they are smaller in size than modern cards and did not have players’statistics printed on the backs. “My cousin, Karla, opened the box and said, ‘Karl, what is this?’ We recognized names of players, but we were not used to seeing small size baseball cards. We put them back in the box, and just like everything else that was in the house we considered whether to pitch them or keep them. Fortunately, we decided to keep them and started doing research about the cards,” said Kissner, one of the 20 heirs who will share proceeds from sales of the cards by Heritage Auctions. “Every time we received more information we got more excited. At one point, I thought, ‘Wow! Oh, my! I’m holding a $70,000 baseball card. They’d been on my office chair and I said, ‘Let’s get these in a vault.’” (Continued on page 18)

I never anticipated how valuable that would have become years later.’ Other comments I hear include, ‘I can’t believe I forgot about that. I remember watching that television show every Wednesday night after school!’” “The Nostalgia Con has been growing every year,” explains Martin Grams, the events coordinator. “Unlike some huge comic cons held at convention centers that attract tens of thousands of fans, all lining up outside in the streets, we have plenty of aisle space for those in electric scooters to move about freely. seven years and still going strong. The fact that MANC has been breaking attendance records is impressive. The Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention is a great venue, whether you want to attend one day or three. Whether you buy, sell or trade, you’ll find everything you could ever want under one roof. If you are looking for an escape to the past - without Professor Peabody’s Wayback Machine - consider attending MANC for the first time this year. The entire schedule of events, including informative articles to read and enjoy, can be found on the convention website, www.MidAtlanticNostalgiaConv ention.com; or by phoning (443) 286-6821. Leftover program guides from last year’s convention are still available - free while supplies last.
“We kept the discovery a secret from the family for a few months until enough information was learned about the cards. We called the family members together for a meeting with Heritage Auctions representatives and told the family we found something in the attic with significant value. There were gasps and whoops and hollers when we told them about the baseball cards,” Kissner recalled. The cards have been authenticated and graded by Professional Sports Authenticator (www.PSAcard.com) of Santa Ana, California, the world’s largest sports memorabilia certification company. In 21 years of authenticating cards, PSA had only certified about 625 of the E98 series, and less than 10 were graded at a near-mint level. Now the total number authenticated

(NASDAQ: CLCT). “In terms of how this will impact the collecting market, it can be argued that this is the most significant find of vintage baseball cards ever reported when you evaluate the find in context,” stated Orlando. “It’s a cliché, but this is one of those once-in-a-lifetime discoveries that came out of nowhere: the ultimate buried treasure find. It’s one thing to find a $10,000 autographed baseball or a $50,000 coin, but it’s extraordinarily rare to find a single group of vintage baseball cards worth millions of dollars,” said Orlando. The auction by Heritage Auctions will be conducted in conjunction with the annual National Sports Collectors Convention. “As the word start-

ed spreading through the hobby grapevine, we’ve had quite a few phone calls and emails from collectors interested in obtaining the cards. This will be the first time so many high-grade examples will be available for collectors,” said Ivy. Kissner is still amazed at the discovery in his grandparent’s house. “Here’s something my grandfather stuck in the attic, and here it is 102 years later and we’re saying, ‘Wow!’ Imagine opening a box and realizing that right in front of you are Ty Cobb, and Honus Wagner!” Heritage Auctions nicknamed the discovery “The Black Swamp Find” in reference to the Great Black Swamp that helped protect Ohio’s Fort Defiance during the 1790’s Northwest Indian War. To identify and preserve their pedigree, the PSA holders for these E98 cards are specially labeled, “The Black Swamp Find.”
