CLASSIC WORLD WAR II MOVIE POSTERS reign supreme in the World War II film poster collecting field. 1. “The Bridge on the River Kwai” (1957). Set in Southeast Asia during World War II, director David Lean’s cinematic masterpiece won seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor (Alec Guinness). Many collectors favor the exquisite “The Bridge on the River Kwai” French grande movie poster (46 x 63 inches) rendered by artist Jean Mascii, which prominently features stars Alex Guinness, William Holden and Sessue Hayakawa. One restored example in fine condition on linen sold at auction for just over $300. 2. “Patton” (1970). George C. Scott won a Best Actor Oscar (which he refused) for his bravura performance as General George S. Patton Jr. (18851945), who famously commanded American troops in

North Africa, Sicily and Europe during World War II. The Patton British quad poster (30 x 40 inches) always rates well with collectors. One example in folded very fine condition brought a top bid of $155 at auction. 3. “Stalag 17” (1953). Director Billy Wilder’s classic World War II comedy- “Saving Private Ryan” (1998) British drama set at a German pris- quad poster, $25. oner of war camp won William Holden a Best Actor Oscar for his superb performance as Sergeant J.J. Sefton, a despised American POW and alleged collaborator who later exposes a Nazi spy within their ranks. The big “Stalag 17” three-sheet poster (41 x 81 inches) is a great entry, with one example in fine+ condition bringing $74 at auction. “Sands of Iwo Jima” (1949) half4. “The Longest Day” sheet style A poster, $621. (1962). Producer Darryl F. Zanuck’s ode to the historic D-Day invasion of June 6, 1944, features a star-studded cast headed “The Bridge on the River Kwai” by John Wayne, Henry (1957) French grande poster, $311. Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Richard Burton, Sean Connery, Eddie Albert, Rod Steiger and Robert Ryan. Some collectors favor “The Longest Day” insert poster (14 x 36 “Patton” (1970) British quad poster, $155. inches), which pictures 42 international stars. One example in rolled fine/very fine condition sold at auction for a reasonable $40. 5. “The Great Escape” (1963). Steve McQueen, James Garner, Richard Attenborough, By William J. Felchner

World War II, mightily waged from 1939 to 1945, has been a favorite subject of filmmakers. World War II pictures number in the thousands and encompass many genres, including dramas, musicals, comedies and documentaries. World War II movie posters comprise some of the top movie poster art ever produced. Here are 15 classic examples that

“The Dirty Dozen” (1967) threesheet poster, $263.

Charles Bronson, James Coburn, David McCallum, et al. lead a daring Allied prison break from a special, highsecurity German POW camp in this absorbing, top-notch World War II thriller. “The Great Escape” standard one-sheet poster (27 x 41 inches) is a perennial favorite in the field, with one example in fine+ condition and preserved on linen bringing $418 at auction. 6. “Saving Private Ryan” “The Longest Day” (1962) insert “Stalag 17” (1953) three-sheet “The Great Escape” (1964) one- (1998). Last Of The “Black Swamp Find” Crossing The Block Nov. 7 To 9 At Heritage Auctions

This rare 1910 E98 “Set of 30” Ty Cobb card graded mint 9 by PSA is expected to bring $35,000 in Heritage Auctions’ Sports Collectible Catalog Auction.

Collectible Catalog Auction, which at 3,500 lots, is officially the largest sports collectible auction ever offered by any auction company. A rare 1910 E98 “Set of 30” Ty Cobb card graded mint 9 by PSA is expected to bring $35,000 to lead the collection. “The prices have been going up in each subsequent auction,” said Chris Ivy, Director of Sports Collectibles at Heritage. “People didn’t know what to expect when it first came out, and when they started seeing highest graded examples, the competition started. We’ve been seeing the prices for cards of [Ty Cobb] and [Honus Wagner] increase with every auction.” Ivy suspects the entire collection may top out at $1.5 million. Two sets from the “Black Swamp Find” have so far each resulted in sale prices of $239,000 and $286,800. Most of the cards from the collection have sold at auction for between $1,000 and $10,000; however, a handful have sold for less than $1,000. Some buyers are considering offers on a few cards previously sold at auction through Heritage’s Make Offer to Owner program, Ivy said. Ivy said handling the collection has been a highlight of his career for two reasons. “I consider it to be an honor,” he said. “It’s brought a lot of goodwill and good press to the hobby of card collecting in that there are still finds like this appearing 100 years after these cards were printed. But I think my favorite part of the whole thing is working with the family. There are more than 20 family members involved in this, and any time you bring something like this into the equation there can be some trouble. That’s not the case here,” Ivy said. “This family is extremely pleasant, and I’m really just happy that this happened to such a great family.” To learn more, visit www.ha.com.

Discovered last year in a dustfilled attic in a small Ohio town, stacks of neat baseball cards each banded by a short length of twine tied by a print shop employee nearly a century ago, rocked the sports collecting world unlike anything in recent memory. The collection of stunningly pristine single player cards were dubbed the “Black Swamp Find,” named after the damp landscape on the edge of Defiance, Ohio, where the cards served their one hundred years of solitude. The discovery turned the Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) population chart on its head like never before. To date the “Black Swamp Find” has generated more than $1.35 million, but that stands to grow substantially on Nov. 7 to 9, when Heritage Auctions offers the remaining complete set of cards, which is considered the fourth-highest-graded PSA existing complete set. Cards depicting Honus Wagner and Mordecai “Miner” Brown are among the 40 lots offered in the Sports
