Sunbonnet Babies Continue To Charm Collectors

One by one, out of the ink bottle pop the little darlings spawned by artist Bertha Corbett’s imagination. Then off they march to rendezvous with mirth and adventure. Such is the scene depicted in one of the many black-and-white line drawings in Corbett’s first book, The Sunbonnet Babies, published over a century ago, in 1900.

successful, Sunbonnet Babies mania soon swept the nation. Meanwhile in a distant New Hampshire grammar school, Eulalie Osgood Grover, a teacher, was despondent over the lack of satisfactory primers for young students. By chance, her brother showed her some of Corbett’s Sunbonnet drawings and that gave Eulalie an idea. She wrote to the artist, suggesting they collaborate in producing a primer for school children. Bertha agreed, and soon they had it finished and quickly found a publisher - the prestigious firm of Rand, McNally

joined the Sunbonnet Girls for an adventure. In time Bertha Corbett became known as “The Mother of the Sunbonnet Babies.” Combining text and rhyming verse with illustrations, her books written in conjunction with Eulalie Grover brought her fame and wealth beyond her wildest dreams. But Bertha was by no means a single-talent artist. She worked in watercolors, did portraits in oils and created beautiful ivory miniatures. But most of her time was spent with her Sunbonnet Babies. At times, she gave chalk talks before large groups. At such presentations, Bertha sketched rapidly as she talked and wove remarkable stories around her “children.” So well received were these talks that she seriously considered offers to do a tour on the vaudeville circuit - a profitable venture taken by many cartoonists of the day. The Sunbonnet Craze People couldn’t get enough of the Sunbonnet Babies. A national craze for the little girls in large Sunbonnets erupted and for a few years they were America’s sweethearts. Businessmen flocked to Corbett’s door seeking rights to use the characters in products and for advertising. Within a couple of years of their first appearance, copycat artists, especially illustrators doing souvenir postcards, sprung up

Groundhog Day Postcards Celebrate Ancient, Beloved February Tradition by Roy Nuhn
While crickets can measure temperature, the only one of nature’s weather-forecasting critters to earn itself a special day of honor is the humble groundhog. Centuries-old tradition has it that if he sees his
Groundhog Day is truly a bit of American folklore - a time for forecasting the weather for the next month and a half. Like most of our country’s customs and traditions, it was brought to the New World by some of the millions of immigrants who came here during the 19th century. It was a bit over a century ago, in 1898, when many of the good citizens of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and environs, got together to form the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, formalizing something that had been going on more than two decades in the region. Ten years later, in 1908, a rival group in another Pennsylvania town founded the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville. As the years passed, still others elsewhere in the state and nation organized similar clubs.

shadow on February 2, then there will be six more weeks of winter. If not, spring is right around the corner. Each year at this time a group of men wearing top hats and tuxedos take a 10-pound groundhog by the name of Phil from his special glass case in the public library of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, and place him into a special burrow on the morning of February 2. Then they - and the rest of the country - hold their collective breath until Phil comes out again and either casts his shadow or not. It’s all nonsense and fun, of course, but the folks in Punxsutawney and its chamber of commerce, who publicize their town as “The Weather Capitol of the World,” have made the event a lucrative one for local businesses. They also hold a Groundhog Ball and crown a Groundhog Queen each year.
Published by Spirit Printing Co., and-white type.
Since then there has been a considerable amount of goodnatured ribbing among them, especially between Punxsutawney and Quarryville. The official purpose of all these groups is to observe the weather forecast of the groundhog and report it to the nation. The unofficial aim, on the other

Groundhog Day Postcards Of great interest to collectors are the very small number of postcards published prior to 1914 about this observance. The postcard has always proved itself to be an excellent documentary of what our nation was like several generations ago. Such cards tell us much about the customs, holidays and folklore of our ancestors, as well as what tickled their funny bone. Groundhog Day remains one of the most difficult holidays to find cards about. Such scarcity is probably explained by the regional nature of the event - mainly in the Northeast, where the “Home of the Groundhog,” promotionGroundhog custom was al postcard for Punxsutawney. really celebrated with pomp and circumstances on a plements the holiday. regular basis.
