The label is a symbol - a meaningful and memorable image conveying a balance of textual information and artistic imagery. If successfully rendered, it is even capable of enhancing a product’s value in the eyes of the consumer.

Twentieth century Chinese product label art was characterized by novel combinations of past traditions and contemporary perspectives. Labels were windows into worlds inhabited by an infinite realm of subjects, chosen for their ability to arouse positive associations.

The cultural icons used for banding products reflected the time, place and circumstances in which the product and its label were manufactured. The same holds true regarding the choice of ornamentation used in frames and borders, and the graphic style of the text. Often, label designers combined elements from multiple eras and streams of influence. Under such circumstances some of the most fascinating labels came to be, containing seemingly odd juxtapositions and incongruous symbolism.

Within China, the most prolific manufacting centers were cities in which the most extensive trans-cultural interaction had taken place. The intermin-

found their way into the Chinese design vocabulary.

Shanghai was the epicenter of foreign business and Western cultural influx, and consequently became home base to the most prominent commercial design houses in China. In contrast with the stature many career artists of Shanghai enjoyed, designers of product labels by and large belonged to a more anonymous realm. By some definitions, many labels could even be classified as “folk-art.”

For many firms, this meant production of their first color labels, and it was not uncommon for this to be noted in small Chinese characters in the top border of such labels.

Morphy’s To Auction Premier Adolf Grenke Breweriana, Beer Can Collection September 21 And 22 The convivial atmosphere of a century-old corner tavern welcomes visitors to Morphy’s southeastern Pennsylvania gallery in the run-up to the big September 21 to 22 sale of Adolf Grenke’s breweriana and beer can collection. More than 40 years in the making, the approximately 4,000-piece Grenke collection will be sold in its entirety and without reserve over the course of the two-day event in Morphy’s Denver, Pennsylvania, gallery.

At the core of the remarkable single-owner collection which also includes 400 beer taps and a selection of advertising signs, artwork and promotional items - are some 500 antique and vintage beer cans, many of which are exceedingly rare. “A few key examples are expected to exceed $50,000 each,” said Morphy Auctions CEO Dan Morphy.

A former plastics industry executive and president of an elevator company, Grenke became aware of beer cans as a collectible in 1972 after his wife took their two young sons to an educational lecture sponsored by the parks department in his suburban Chicago neighborhood.

“The fellow making the presentation was a Meister Brau salesman. He was there to encourage kids to collect beer cans and even handed out sam-

ple cans,” Grenke recalled. But it wasn’t until later, while on a family vacation in Texas, that Grenke himself caught the collecting bug.

The toys will feature pressed steel and Chein tin examples, as well as rare FisherPrice toys and more.

One of the nearly dozen fire apparatus pieces in the sale will be a 1922 Bull Nose Mack fire chemical ladder truck (estimate $25,000 to $50,000). Vehicles of the toy variety will include a circa 1920s Gendron Willys Knight Pioneer line pedal car in all original condition (estimate $5,000 to $10,000); and a Toledo Buick pressed steel toy car in excellent shape (estimate $10,000 to $15,000).

The Pioneer Valley is a primary foliage destination in the fall, with many scenic hikes and drives, and you can pick your own apples and stock up on cider, pumpkins and chrysanthemums while visiting.

The school is on Route 9, near Cooley-Dickinson Hospital; there’s plenty of free parking. Some illustrators capture the theatricality in Poe’s stories of violence and revenge, including Arthur Rackham, whose interpretation of “The Tell-Tale Heart” is full of exaggerated, dramatic gestures and expressions. He incorporates an explicit view under the floorboards (not part of Poe’s text) that more or less summarizes the whole story with its inclusion of the bloody knife, dismembered corpse and focus on the victim’s “vulture eye” - the very cause of the heinous crime, according to the narrator/murderer.

Poe’s exploration of all aspects of the human psyche has appealed to modern artists

through the present day, including those associated with the Symbolist movement, G e r m a n Expressionism, Surrealism and Abstract

Expressionism.

Robert Motherwell created a series of Poe-inspired Abstract Expressionist collages and lithographs during the 1970s. One of the lithographs, entitled Poe’s Abyss, references Poe’s “Descent into the Maelstrom,” in which a fisherman describes his harrowing and horrifying fight for survival when caught in a ferocious ocean whirlpool.

Motherwell uses bold brushstrokes and overlays of subtle color to suggest the darkness and swirling of the sea and its inherent chaos. Like Poe’s story, Motherwell’s lithograph symbolizes the descent into the turmoil of the subconscious, a theme resonant with Abstract Expressionists such as Motherwell, who saw Poe as one of the originators of modern art.
