Inside This Issue
As autumn turns to winter, we look forward to the holidays in this December issue. Author Roy Nuhn gives readers an in-depth look at early novelty Santa Claus postcards in one of this month's featured articles.

The Christmas season was a popular time for roughly 50 various preWorld War I postcard publishers. The portrayal of Santa Claus was a highly regarded and marketed image. These novelties were often more elaborate than what present-day publishers in the postcard industry produce. One example was the folded box type made by The International Art Co. in New York City, which included multiple scenes in a threedimensional stand-up construction. Made of various materials, they were considered toys and became collectible over generations.

Gesetzli converted many of its regular Santa designs, some drawn by the artist Mailick, to the hold-to-light form. A number of unknown publishers of greetings cards also joined the field, most of them using illustrations available from their other postcards. Being Europeans, the Santas are usually dressed in brown, blue, purple, or some color other than red. Identifying Authentic Audubon Prints About 3.4 million original Audubon prints were created between 1826 and 1871. That sounds like a lot, until you realize that there are over 25 million reproductions of these prints in circulation, and that number is constantly rising. Some of these reproductions are old lithographed book plates (made during and since the 1930s) that have been cut out and framed, while others are calendar prints or promotional pieces, all made from the 1940s forward. According to Audubon collectors, these reproductions are only worth the value of the frames they’re in. It’s fine to buy one of these reproductions to hang on your wall as long as the seller didn’t misrepresent the repro as an original print, for which you

Amsterdams do have the photolithographic dots that you won’t find on earlier prints. ended up paying hundreds or thousands of dollars. So how can you differentiate between an authentic Audubon print and a contemporary reproduction that someone claimed had been sitting in their great-grandfather’s closet for the past hundred years? There are several ways to do this. The easiest thing to check is the image itself. The majority of original Audubon print series were hand-colored with period watercolors, whereas modern prints will have millions of tiny colored dots that you can easily see with a magnifier. On the
Audubon prints were originally sold to subscribers, who generally would have them trimmed and bound into volumes. While most of those original prints did end up bound in book form, a small number of unbound, untrimmed prints still (Continued on page 7)

exist. And when it comes to authenticating Audubon prints, size definitely matters. You can immediately eliminate prints on contemporary paper sizes, those ranging between 8-by-10 and 16-by-20 inches, which fall in between the measurements of oversized original Audubon prints and their smaller octavo prints (printed between 1840 and 1871). The various Audubon editions were printed on different sizes of paper, but none were the same as typical modern paper sizes. For example, the original Birds of America Havell Edition aquatints, created between 1826 and 1838, were double elephant folio size, approximately 26-by-39 inches (unless they’ve been trimmed) and were printed on heavy stock. You would most likely see evidence if a sheet had been bound, such as small slits or holes along one edge from being stitched into volumes. The reason these sheets were so large is that John James Audubon drew all the birds

with life-sized proportions, which is another important thing to check for. By holding the paper up to a light source, you can look for the correct watermark for each edition. For the Havell edition, look for either J. Whatman or J. Whatman Turkey Mill (Whatman was the papermaker); each would be followed by a date within the Havell Edition range of 1826 to 1838. One exception is that a previous owner may have trimmed the margins to the point of eliminating the watermark in order to fit the print into a particular
P.A.C.M. - December 2013 Page 7 would also be a printed plate number in Roman numerals located in the upper right-hand corner. Bien Editions can pose a different problem. While the pages are still double elephant folios and the birds are drawn in life-sized proportions, images of smaller birds were printed on one sheet of paper. The problem with this is that “Bien” will be in the text at the bottom right corner of the page, not on each image. In addition, Bien pages had no watermarks. So if a previous owner wanted frame. In that case, you’d have to frame those smaller images to show the piece to an expert separately, they would cut the or use other means of sheet in half to separate the two images. Santa Claus Postcards (Continued from page 4)
The Worcester, Massachusetts-based Whitney Company, home of the frolicsome Nimble Nicks, produced a line of Christmas easel postcards just before and after World War I. Santa Claus was one of the subjects on these cards. Perforated for punching out rather than cutting, the cards could stand upright on a flat surface. The Gibson Art Company’s “Movie Post Card” set of Christmas subjects included at least two Santas - one with a wreath and one in a rocking chair. By folding over and inserting the tabs of the figure into the slips of the base, you get a rocking paper toy. Several types of three-dimensional stand-up novelty Santa Claus postcards rank high on collectors’ want lists. Those by the United States Art Co. have a top layer which

New Zealand Movie Magazines Of The 1940s “Picture Show” and “Picturegoer,” which were published fortnightly during the war, and in the early post World War II period Australian editions of “Photoplay” and “Motion Picture” came on sale. The “Australian Photoplays” contained content Americans had read five to six months before. “Filmland” was the established New Zealand movie magazine when “Screen Parade” debuted in August 1944. The older magazine began life as “New Zealand Theatre and Motion Picture” in December 1920. Acknowledging that silent pictures belonged in the cinematic past, editor/publisher Frank Millar changed the name to “NZ Talkies and Theatre” from the January 1931 issue, and retained it until March 1940 when “NZ Talkies” became “Filmland.” After noticing the new name, the next thing readers would have
seen was the increased price of sixpence (5 cents) per copy. “Filmland” had less content than its predecessors, and it was now printed on newsprint, with issues averaging 20 to 24 pages. World War II paper shortages even saw them appear with bright green, blue or pink pages. However, the covers always remained glossy although the art paper inserts of its pre-war incarnations had gone. Film companies then had their New Zealand offices in Wellington, the country’s capital, where Millar would call regularly to collect copy and photographs. After the change of name to “Filmland,” he continued his association with Ferguson & Osborn, sticking with the printing firm that had produced the previous versions of his magazine. Frank Millar died on Sept. 4, 1944, several days after he suffered a brain hemorrhage while speaking at a meeting. His widow, Winnie, assumed the role of Filmland’s editor, moving the magazine’s office from Customhouse Quay in the central city to the family home in Overtoun Terrace, in the Wellington suburb of Hataitai. Mrs. Millar appears to have edited the magazine until post World War II conditions enabled her to sell the publication. The November 1947 issue was the last she edited. F.J. Whelean purchased the magazine, and readers noticed gradual changes until the smaller quarto-size page format June 1945: Bette Davis was 11th came in June 1948. in “Screen Parade” readers’ 1945 October 1946: Betty Grable’s By early 1950, the magazine popularity poll. third of five “Filmland” covers. was being printed in Auckland by By Christopher Moor
In the 1940s New Zealanders were avid moviegoers, second only to Americans in the number of times they saw a movie each week. If World War II kept imports of American film magazines out of the country, New Zealanders had their own to keep them informed about their favorite stars and the new pictures coming to their local theaters. The era was dominated by “Filmland” and “Screen Parade,” two monthly rivals that would end up as one magazine in the early 1950s. Neither title had the color plates of the American fan magazines, although full page movie adverts, pictorial spreads, fashion pages and candids were found in their pages, as they were in U.S. magazines. Their competition included the imported English weeklies,

An otherwise mint cover on both magazines can be spoiled by a bookseller’s stamp or the name of the original owner written in ink, reflecting New Zealanders’ habits of the 1940s. cutting while maintaining its price in an effort to retain a dwindling readership. The marriage of “Screen Parade” and “Filmland” lasted nearly four years. “Screen Parade” ceased publication with the November 1954 issue, leaving New Zealanders without a locally-produced movie magazine until the introduction of “Cinema, Stage & TV” in June 1956. Today some may think of “Screen Parade” and “Filmland” as being quaint. They come from a conservative era when New Zealand’s population was around two million people, making their collecting appeal that of rarity rather than value. Both magazines occasionally turn up on eBay or TradeMe, a New Zealand Internet auction site, and just as infrequently in

definitely the superior product for both content and appearance; illustrations were clearer reproductions, with the covers showing less wear from handling. But these improvements came at a price. The magazine cost one shilling and sixpence (15 cents), three times that of its rival, “Filmland.” Readers got 64 pages for their money at the magazine’s peak, which included full page portraits, articles on both stars and character players in the new releases, and news from British and American studios from regular columnists. MGM advertised regularly on the inside cover page, and its product received much greater coverage than the minimal attention from “Filmland” under the Millars’ editorship. More non-film-related advertisements also appeared in “Screen Parade.” They were aimed at what was a predominantly female readership, with the latest in cosmetics, shoes, fashions, swimwear, undergarments and stockings featured. “Screen Parade” invited its readers to vote for New Zealand’s favorite stars, with the results published in February 1945. Greer Garson topped the poll, followed by Betty Grable
