These New Year’s Greetings Are All About Luck! By Barbara Andrews Even the least superstitious person may buy into some old myths when it comes to the first day of the year. This was certainly true on New Year’s postcards of the early 1900s. They thoroughly embraced a host of traditions calculated to ensure a happy, prosperous new year. For those who hadn’t exhausted their enthusiasm for mailing postcards at Christmas time, a number of firms published greeting cards to wish friends and family a happy new year. The large number available to collectors today confirms how important it was to send goodluck wishes. When the craze for post-

Check any assortment of New Year’s postcards, and chances are a baby will be replacing old Father Time, chasing out the old and ushering in the new. The Germans in the 14th century were the first to use an image of a baby with a banner to represent the beginning of a year. Since they printed most of the postcards in the early 20th century, it’s not surprising that the New Year’s There’s affection and toasting on this New Year’s card, but the artist baby was a common motif. didn’t get the horseshoe right. John Wayne’s Driver’s License, Green Beret, Other Memorabilia Sold In Record-Breaking Event More than 700 costumes, scripts, awards and memorabilia from the estate of legendary film star John Wayne brought more than $5.38 million during a two-day event hosted by H e r i t a g e Auctions, in conjunction with John Wayne Enterprises. Dozens of items brought at least two-to-three times their pre-auction estimates. The auction was held at the Hyatt Century Plaza in Los Angeles, and online. All prices realized quoted above include a 19.5 percent buyer’s premium and represent the actual, full price being paid by the winning bidders for the items. Top items included the signature green wool beret worn by Wayne in the notable film The Green Berets, selling for $179,250. His Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role in the 1969 film, True Grit, realized $143,400. The cowboy hat from two of Wayne’s films,

thought to scare away evil spirits. Toasting the New Year has an even more ancient beginning. The wine the ancient Greeks and Romans drank could be pretty nasty tasting. They floated a square of burnt toast to improve the flavor, and the last to drink ate it, hence the origin of “toasting.” The list of good luck superstitions goes on and on. Kissing at midnight insured affection throughout the year. Food in the pantry and money in the purse on the first day of the year insured prosperity. A new garment would bring new clothes during the year. Anger and breaking things would bring bad fortune. And, my favorite comes from the Scots: If the first person through a door in the new year was a
Big Jake and The Cowboys brought in $119,500; Wayne’s last Driver’s License brought a record price for a permanent Driver’s License when it realized $89,625 and his iconic eye patch from the Academy Award winning film True Grit sold for $47,800. More than 2,600 fans from around the world submitted bids, either in person or online. “The beret that Wayne wore in The Green Beret shocked the room when it brought the astounding record price for a costume hat of more than $179,000,” said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions. “The hat Duke wore in Big Jake and The Cowboys brought the astronomical amount of

Wayne, an A c a d e m y Award winner, died of the disease in 1979. “This was all about my father’s fans,” said Ethan Wayne, son of the legendary actor and President of John W a y n e Enterprises. “It was important to our family to give his thousands of admirers the chance to own a piece of my father’s legacy. He loved his fans almost as much as his family, and now they will always have something to remember him
tall, dark, and handsome man, good luck would surely follow him. Old superstitions are fun, but they also influenced the outpouring of early New Year’s postcards. There’s something irresistible about a fresh beginning, a new start, a year where nothing is predetermined. What could be more natural than to wish loved ones, family, or dear friends all the luck in the world in the coming year? A lot of people believed this enough to send out New Year’s greeting postcards. by.” “All the items were carefully preserved by Wayne’s family for the past 32 years, and that care has certainly paid off,” continued Rohan. “The prices realized s h o w just how beloved J o h n Wa y n e remains today. They also show that iconic Hollywood memorabilia items continue to sell regardless of the state of the economy.” John Wayne’s mon-
umental film career spanned six decades. He appeared in more than 170 films, a dozen-plus directed by legendary film director John Ford, and is one of Hollywood’s biggest and most durable box-office stars. Incredibly versatile, Wayne starred in almost every genre Hollywood offered, from war movies to romantic comedies, police dramas and biographies, but it was the Western - the American cinema - where Wayne made his most lasting mark. Wayne was nominated three times for the Academy Award, winning the Oscar for Best Actor in 1969 for True Grit. In a recent Harris Poll listing of America’s favorite movie stars, John Wayne ranks third, and has never been out of the top 10 since the poll’s inception. Marking The Date - New Year’s Style By Roy Nuhn New Year’s Day greeting style postcards with year dates as the major illustration theme were first issued in the waning days of the 19th century. Cards from the 1880s and 1890s, though, are extremely rare.

A Wonderful Price For ‘A Wonderful Life’ (And Other Posters) Heritage Auctions (www.ha.com) ended its latest auction of Vintage Movie Posters in November. Just in time for the perennial feasting on the classic Christmas classic movie, It’s A Wonderful Life (RKO, 1946), one bidder took home a memento of the iconic movie in the form of the one sheet, 27-inch by 41-inch poster for the film. The winning bid was $11,950. One of the most universally beloved movies ever made, the traditional Christmas favorite, starring James Stewart and Donna Reed, and directed by Frank Capra, was actually a box office flop upon its initial release, earning only $3.3 million against a cost of $3.7 million. Once the film lapsed into the public domain in the mid1970s, however, and became a regular TV staple during the holidays, it finally gained the recognition and admiration it deserved. The “star” of the auction was a Three Stooges movie poster, Three Little Beers

had views of Rio De Janeiro and were done in large letter style. From the early years of the 20th century there were some fascinating sets of year dates, as well as some duds. In this last category will be found Raphael Tuck and Sons’ “New Year Series 113” for 1908. These offered the year in various col-
ored flowers, all in slightly differing positions inside of flower frames. On the other hand, a very lovely set was done by an anonymous German publisher that shows marching children. On one of the cards the numerals for 1909 are found on the side of the band’s instruments used by the boys. On another, the date is located on the skateboards carried by a small group of little girls. All cards have gold borders.

Then there are the hold-tolight cards in this category. A novelty type, these glow when held to a strong light. First published in 1905 or 1906, sales of them continued up to 1910. A common variety, if any hold-tolight can be so called, has the year, 1908, formed out of children in the snow. Church scenes, often with falling snow with the year carved in the sky, predominate. lisher, whether of standard folded cards or souvenir postcards, has printed any of this topic. This is probably due to the fact that people nowadays rarely send New Year’s cards to one another as they once did. Year date postcards are just one other fascinating thing from the past that has never been revived. Collectors will just have to be satisfied with rummaging around in search of the oldies.
