These Vintage Cards Welcome Spring! will be March 20th. The scientific-minded will find an avalanche of information online about the how and why of the date, but postcard collectors tend to be more into the nostalgia of the first day of spring. For those living north of the MasonDixon line in the early 20th century, the heyday of postcards, the first day of spring was about life changes. It meant getting out of long underwear, packing away bulky coats, and hanging up the snow shovel on the garage or barn wall to await another winter. For farmers, still the dominant segment of the population in the early 1900s, it was time for plowing and planting. For housewives, it meant springcleaning, a process not welcomed by children drafted to help. Ver is Latin for spring, equi is aequus (equal) and nox is night. A very long time ago, people observed that the spring equinox comes as close as any day of the year does to having an equal amount of night and day. This made the date special, but it was also a day heralding the beginning of spring, a time for planting and the birth of domestic animals. It was an especially welcome time, and almost every culture in the Northern Hemisphere celebrated in some way. In pagan cultures, it was a time to ask the gods for good crops and large flocks. (The autumn equinox wasn’t as welcome since there was a long winter to look forward to.) On modern calendars the spring equinox comes on March 20th or 21st. This year it

In my generation, it was hopscotch with squares drawn on the sidewalk by soft rusty-colored rocks, roller-skating, bike riding, and picking wild flowers in the woods at the end of the road. Teams formed up for softball and kickball in imitation of America’s favorite sport, baseball. When the earth was soft enough to dig a small hole, marbles clinked in hotly contested competitions. Ironically, the name Easter was derived from the AngloSaxon goddess of spring, Eostre. Early celebrations in her honor centered around fertility rites with eggs used as symbols of new life. In fact, ancient cultures including the Egyptians, Persians, and Romans also used the egg to

The early church did a masterful job of incorporating pagan symbols of the spring equinox into the Christian celebration of Easter. Parades and new clothes to symbolize new life in Christ can be traced to ancient observances of the spring equinox. EPHEMERA 32 (Continued from page 16)

by Barbara Loe; and Packaging Ephemera for Shipment through the Mail or “How my eBay seller is single-handedly keeping the tape business profitable,” by George Fox. Exhibits are open during the Fair hours - Society President and Exhibits Chair, Art Groten, thought that, this

year, we might try something new. In keeping with our theme of how ephemera reflects social history, he is planning 20 single-frame exhibits on various topics whereby ephemera informs a social value. It might be a personal value, like honesty or romantic love, or a family value, like thrift, health, kinship or memory, or a societal value, likes patriotism, unity, justice or peace. The exhibit

should not be merely a showand-tell but a story, with a clear beginning, middle and ending. One may use a single type of ephemera or a variety, and the exhibits are non-competitive. Each exhibitor will receive a Certificate of Appreciation from the Society. In addition, there will be a Collectors Roundtable discussion by inveterate ephemera collectors discussing their collections Sunday morning at 9
