In the first of three engaging articles pertaining to collecting early vintage movie stills, the cover story this month focuses on the intrinsic visual interest of movie stills. PACM contributor and Louisiana Tech University professor Saul Zalesch examines pre-1940 examples of movie stills. As explained by Zalesch, “Stills from before studios consolidated into names that remain familiar today, such as Paramount and Universal, are extremely rare.” In his quarterly “Hollywood Archives” column, author and researcher William Felchner delves into “Pirates In Hollywood,” outlining a series of both movies and associated memorabilia. Due to the snowstorm that affected large parts of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions in mid-January, the popular Boxborough Paper Town event will be rescheduled for March 12. Collecting Film Stills: Part One, Visual Interest By Saul Zalesch, Louisiana Tech University
This is the first of three articles on collecting early (pre1940) vintage movie photos (stills). It focuses on stills of intrinsic visual interest. (The later pieces will deal with stills of major stars and miscellaneous categories of stills for collecting.) Still collecting has a built-in peculiarity: one acquires vintage photos, often of great beauty, for trivial sums, even though photograph collectors routinely pay thousands of dollars for brand new prints from the negatives of famous “art” photographers.
Those collectors are buying names and famous images. Still collectors judge obscure photos, deciding for themselves which are interesting for their imagery or for associated factors to be addressed later. Movie stills measure 8-by10-inches. Before 1917, sizes varied; many 4-by-5-inch stills exist from the 1930s on, made for private studio use. Stills on heavier paper than the norm are often called deluxe. Even more desirable are stills mounted on linen, called Key Book stills. Each production kept a binder, a Key Book, of master photos of scenes shot and candids of stars and
directors snapped by the set photographer for the subjects’ and studio’s use. These master stills had an extra one-inch border with punch holes for the binder. This margin has often been removed, possibly so that photos could be framed. Many stills have strips of paper called snipes glued to the back. These describe the scene shown or talk about the star pictured. Snipes provide some assurance that a still is vintage, but this is not guaranteed. Be wary of all stills showing the most familiar scenes in the most famous movies. These images have been reproduced many times. When issued to accompany the rerelease of a film, they are authentically collectible, but many are commercial repros and have no real value. Beginning in the ’30s, photos that would actually be used for publicity had to be approved by the Advertising Advisory Committee, which was indicated by a green oval, later rectangular ink stamp, on the back. It seems doubtful that every copy of a photo used would get stamped, so photos that have this stamp may have been studio masters. This is something I cannot yet prove (I have seen only one photo marked on the back disapproved, in red; it shows dancers
revealing a bit too much underclothing). Stills from before studios consolidated into names that remain familiar today, such as Paramount and Universal, are extremely rare. There are few extant from before 1914, and not many at all until around 1918. The extraordinary mermaid image from “Neptune’s Daughter” (1914), showing Annette Kellermann, the “Million Dollar Mermaid,” may be unique (It cost $15). The same goes for this Babylonian scene from D. W. Griffith’s “Intolerance” (1916), which I found in a box of old stills (The leading auction site for movie paper, www.emovie poster.com, has never handled a still from this legendary spectacular). It is quite likely that some of the stills one acquires from films before around 1930 may prove the only existing copy of (Continued on page 6)

particular photos. Stills are available for most films of the ’20s, but you would have a hard time finding specific images from even the biggest blockbusters. It is pure chance which photos from a film survive and turn up. Stills have amplified historical significance from “Lost Films,” meaning those of which no copy survives. One can find exotic scenes as in “Dancer of the Nile” (1923) or the chariot race in “Ben Hur” (1925), the most expensive film of the ’20s. History is re-created in films like “The Iron Horse” (1924) and “Janice Meredith” (1924), which emulates Emanuel Leutze’s famous painting “Washington Crossing the Delaware” (1851). The bizarre survives in the forgotten “If Marriage Fails” (1926). The routineness of racism in 1920s America is apparent in “Warming Up” (1928). The “Janice Meredith” cost $4. “Warming Up” cost $59 because of its extraordinary racial content. The bizarre “If Marriage Fails” was $40. Obscure stills of the ’20s cost only a few dollars. Great ones from famous films like “The Thief of Bagdad” (1924) occasionally top $100. Those from horror and sci/fi classics
www.paperandadvertisingcollector.com such as “Metropolis” (1927) and “Phantom of the Opera” (1923) can fetch much higher prices. Condition plays some role in the value of a still, but this is incremental, not geometric as with baseball cards or comic books. Few silent films retain legions of fans, but several enduring classics that appeared in the ’30s do, including “Snow White” (1937) and “Gone with the Wind” (1939). Crime films remain powerful. A “Public Enemy” (1931) still evokes a gasp when Jimmy Cagney shoves a grapefruit in Mae Clarke’s face (A leading dealer has never seen this scene in a vintage still; I showed one from the 1954 rerelease, by which time this scene was iconic). “I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang” (1932) introduced middle-class Americans to the dark side of our criminal-justice system. “GMen” (1935) educated an audience that had hardly heard of fingerprints. “The Roaring Twenties” (1939), with both Cagney and Bogart, brought the great crime films to a stunning climax. This still of making bathtub gin has unusual documentary status because a newspaper clipping reproducing this very photograph is pasted to its back. Among the numerous costume spectacles of this decade, Cecil B. DeMille’s “Cleopatra” (1934) and (Continued on page 7)

impressive special effects in “Dr. Cyclops” (1939), one of the more affordable horror films for collectors, and in the ghostly manifestations in “Topper” (1937). So there is something for every taste, often very reasonably priced, in collecting film stills. There are three secrets to getting good buys: knowing more history than other collectors, so one can discern previously unnoticed elements or qualities in a still; being ready, even eager, to seek and value qualities or circumstances in an image that may not interest others; and blazing your own trails in collecting rather than joining and following herds. The pioneers who first collected film stills in the ’50s and ’60s are dying off, and their collections are flooding onto the market. Also, newspapers that were routinely sent photos in the hope that they would publicize a film have sold off, or are selling off, their archives. Much of this material finds its way to auctioneer Bruce Hershenson at www.emovieposter.com, which stages 12 online auctions every month, one of which is devoted to single stills and another to groups of stills from single films. Miscellaneous batches of stills appear in this site’s regular bulklot auctions as well. This has made the last few years a golden age for acquiring wonderful material easily and cheaply. “The Crusades” (1935) remain among the most enjoyable. Disney already dominated cartoon releases. Stills from “Snow White” are readily available. Less easy to find are those from shorts like “Two Gun Mickey” (1934) and “Merbabies” (1938). Efforts at raising movies to a higher level of art resulted in such films as the choreographic masterpieces of “Busby Berkeley,” represented by Dames (1934); the films of Metropolitan opera star Grace Moore, which included the incredible bathroom scene in “Love Me Forever” (1935); and that legendary interpretation of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (1935) in which Jimmy Cagney played Bottom, shown donkeyheaded. Racial mores gave us the unbelievable image in “Steamboat Bill” (1936) of Stepin Fetchit in a whale’s mouth; the strange massage scene in “The Duke Comes Back” (1937); and the boisterous dancing in “It Can’t Last Forever” (1937) that includes future star Dorothy Dandridge. These culminated in Hattie McDaniel measuring Scarlett O’Hara in “Gone With the Wind” (She became the first African-American to win an Oscar) and, that same year, staging a dueling facedown with Georgia-born Oliver Hardy of “Laurel & Hardy in Zenobia” (1939). Then there are the stills that are just plain peculiar. Strangely, three include elephants: W. C. Field’s “Poppy” (1936), “Zenobia” and “Gunga Din” (1939). In “Swing High Swing Low” (1937), beautician Carole Lombard works a mechanism that would appear more suitable for a torture chamber. We see

Pirates In Hollywood: Great Pirate Movies And Memorabilia adapted for the big screen in 1934 by MGM. Directed by Victor Fleming, this action story of piracy and buried treasure stars Wallace Beery as Long John Silver, Jackie Cooper as young Jim Hawkins and Lionel Barrymore as Billy Bones. “Treasure Island” was lovingly filmed on location in Hawaii and on California’s Santa Catalina Island. “As fine a lot of cutthroats as ever have infested a film turn up as pirates in the latest cinematic conception of Robert Louis Stevenson’s ‘Treasure Island’,” reported Mordaunt Hall of The New York Times (9/18/34). A lightly restored one-sheet poster style D (27-by-41-inches) featuring Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper in fine condition on linen brought $896.25 at auction. A lot of four theater lobby cards (11-by-14-inches) picturing various scenes from the movie in very fine+ condition sold at auction for $448.13. 2. “Captain Blood” (1935). Hollywood bad boy Errol Flynn has the title role of Captain Peter Blood in this swashbuckling tale of betrayal, rebellion and piracy on the high seas. Directed with flair by Michael Curtiz, the film also features Olivia de Havilland, Lionel Atwill and Basil Rathbone. “Captain Blood” This “The Black Swan” (1942) was made for a then-staggering midget window card sold for $1.2 million and went on to capture five Academy Award $1,015.75. nominations, including Best By William J. Shiver me timbers, there’s nothing like a good pirate movie! A longtime staple of Hollywood action fare, pirate movies date back to the earliest days of the cinema, providing viewers with plenty of seafaring adventure, swashbuckling thrills, romance and always a hint of intrigue. Here are 10 great pirate movies and just some of the valuable paper and advertising treasures they generated. Ready to walk the plank down Hollywood pirate movie history? 1. “Treasure Island” (1934). More down to earth was a colorful, lightly restored “Captain Blood” Spanish two-sheet poster (39by-58.5-inches) in fine+ condition which sold at auction for $1,434. 3. “Swiss Family Robinson” (1960). Based on the 1812 novel by Johann David Wyss, Walt Disney’s “Swiss Family Robinson” stormed into movie theaters during the 1960 Christmas season. Expertly directed by Ken Annakin, the movie stars John Mills, Dorothy McGuire, James MacArthur, Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran as the Robinson family, with Janet Munro and Sessue Hayakawa also on board. The big three-sheet poster (41by-81-inches) provides a grand spectacle for collectors, featuring a bare-chested Burt Lancaster swinging from a rope and waving the Jolly Roger. Originally printed in two sections, one example in folded very fine condition sold at auction for $119.50. 5. “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” (2003). Johnny Depp, in the role of pirate captain Jack Sparrow, stars in this $140 million spectacular directed by Gore Verbinski which launched the wildly successful “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie franchise. Also in the cast are Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. There’s lots of action in this one, as Depp and Bloom team up to rescue the governor’s fair-haired daughter from the evil clutches of buccaneer Rush and his cursed, undead crew. “Finally, there’s a big-budget popcorn movie that delivers what moviegoers hunger for: humor, action, thrills and charismatic characters,” said Claudia Puig of USA Today (7/16/03). S a t u r d a y , March 12. The location and all else remains the same. This is the original Boxborough Paper Show where showgoers can find all things paper from classic ephemera to books. A long-time favorite of both dealers and customers, the promotors continue to make changes and improvements to ensure the continued growth and success of the long running show. and more diverse offerings. Exhibitors from across the Northeast and Canada will gather to present an outstanding array of fine, rare and unusual old books, maps, postcards, autographs, prints, posters, advertising, classic vinyl, and much more.

Impact Events Group Announces Book And Paper Fairs Lineup Marvin Getman of Impact Events Group announced his lineup of book and paper fairs for 2016. Eight years ago, after 36 years of producing consumer shows, Getman promoted his first Book Fair in Boston, Mass. Dealers were impressed with his attention to detail and knack for advertising and promotion. Over the past three years he has steadily been adding fairs. Getman now produces
fairs in Concord, N.H., both Brooklyn and Manhattan, N.Y., and also Boston and Lexington, Mass. Gordon and stars Charles Herbert as Jimmy Warren, a young pirate fanatic who is magically transported back to the days of Blackbeard the Pirate via a genie in a bottle. Murvyn Vye plays a memorable, lusty, robust Blackbeard, with Susan Gordon, Paul Guilfoyle and Joe Turkel in support in this kiddie fare from United Artists. One of the prized treasures from the film is the Dell Movie Classic Four Color #1117 tie-in comic book. One example, featuring Charles Herbert and Murvyn Vye on the cover, in graded CGC near mint 9.4 condition sold at auction for $155.35. 10. “Abbott & Costello Meet Captain Kidd” (1952). Any pirate movie compilation should include at least one comedy, with Warner Bros.
“Abbott & Costello Meet Captain Kidd” ably filling the bill. Bud and Lou, one of filmdom’s all-time comedy duos, play a hapless pair of tavern waiters who accidentally happen on a treasure map, leading them to the notorious Captain Kidd and buried treasure on Skull Island. Directed by longtime Abbott & Costello movie alumnus Charles Lamont, the film also features Charles Laughton as Captain Kidd, Hillary Brooke, Bill Shirley and Leif Erickson. A complete set of eight lobby cards (11-by14-inches) in fine+ condition brought $143.40 at auction.
