INSIDE THIS ISSUE “Superheroes In Gotham”
This month, frequent contributor William Felchner presents an overview of Civil War movie posters and assorted memorabilia. From early films such as “Gone With the Wind” to later ones such as “Gettysburg,” “Glory,” and “Cold Mountain,” the author includes the market history of posters through recent auctions. An important cultural exhibition currently on view at the New-York Historical Society, titled “Superheroes in Gotham,” explores society’s most famous superheroes and the phenomenon of comic books stemming from New York City in the 1930s. Also in New York City and currently on view is “The Life and Writings of Ernest Hemingway” at the Morgan Library and Museum. Organized in partnership with Boston’s John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the important exhibition explores the writer’s life, notably his dynamic creative period, from 1918 to the aftermath of World War II. Of course, there is much more that any individual with an interest in paper, ephemera, and advertising is sure to want to read.

“Superheroes In Gotham” Latest Cultural Exhibition Takes Over The New-York Historical Society This Fall, the New-York Historical Society (N-YHS) will share the untold history of comic books, a cultural phenomenon born in 1930s New York City that has since taken the world by storm. On view through Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016, “Superheroes in Gotham” will focus on our culture’s most

legendary superheroes Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Spider-Man and Iron Man, as well as more recent characters inspired by the contemporary city. Beyond the characters, “Superheroes in Gotham” will consider the importance of New York City as a creative force behind a uniquely American mythology. Among the range of material on display will be a rare comic book featuring Superman’s first appearance (Action Comics No. 1, June 1938), clips from early radio and film adaptations, Philip Pearlstein’s Superman painting (1952), original drawings by Steve Ditko of Spider-Man’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy (No. 15, 1962), a Batmobile made for the Batman television series (1966), a costume from Broadway’s “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” (2011), and hiphop pioneer Darryl McDaniels’ DMC comic book (2014) and his signature fedora. “Comics are a huge cultural force, but few remember their New York roots,” said Dr. Louise Mirrer, president and CEO of the New-York Historical Society. “‘Superheroes in Gotham’ will immerse visitors in the early days of comics and

their evolution, so they can learn more about the genesis of their favorite characters, encounter new voices that continue the creative tradition today, and perhaps see aspects of their own neighborhoods imaginatively captured on the page.” The exhibition is curated by the New-York Historical Society’s Debra Schmidt Bach, associate curator of decorative arts, and Nina Nazionale, director of library operations. Exhibition Overview Upon entering the NewYork Historical Society’s Central Park West entrance, visitors will be greeted by an original working Batmobile (1966), one of three cars created for the 1966-68 “Batman” television series. The first gallery will trace each character’s origins within the context of their creators and period events. A range of first-issue comic books will be displayed, including Superman’s “Action Comics No. 1” (June 1938) and “Batman No. 1” (Spring 1940). During World War II, many superhero stories channeled American concerns about the conflict, and several of their creators also enlisted. drawing of Wonder Woman in an early version of her patriotic costume by H.G. Peter (ca. 1941) will be shown alongside a “Wonder Woman for President” issue (No. 7, Winter 1943). Two of Steve Ditko’s original drawings of SpiderMan’s first appearance in Amazing Fantasy (No. 15, September 1962) will be displayed alongside a copy of the published issue. Considered Spider-Man’s “birth certificate,” these drawings will be on public view for the first time outside of the Library of Congress. Other Cold War-era artifacts include original cover art for “The Invincible Iron Man” (No. 1, 1968). The second gallery will explore how superheroes flew from page to screen decades before they became blockbuster movie franchises. Scripts, audio recordings, animation cels, and cartoon clips will illuminate Superman’s multimedia adaptation less than two years after his comic book debut. One particular clip from the Superman cartoon (1941) will depict the character flying for the first time, rather than leaping as he did in print. After appearing in two film serials in the 1940s, Batman was reimagined in a popular television series (1966-68) and full length film (released in 1966). In addition to the original Batmobile (1966), the exhibition will feature three Batman set paintings by art director Leslie Thomas (ca. 1966-68) and a Catwoman costume (ca. 1966). Clips from the Wonder Woman television series (1975-79), as well as a copy of Ms. magazine’s first issue depicting her at the helm (1972), illuminate Wonder Woman’s development as a second-wave feminist icon. The final gallery will examine the enduring influence of superheroes on a wide range of New York-based artists, cartoonists, contemporary comic book creators, and fans. Known today for his hyperreal nude portraits, the exhibition will feature Philip Pearlstein’s “Superman” (1952), a proto-Pop art painting from his early career. Also featured will be cartoonist Mort Gerberg’s original illustration art for The New Yorker (“Do you have any references besides Batman?,”

The Life And Writings Of Ernest Hemingway New Exhibit Is Presented At The Morgan Library & Museum In July 1918, Ernest Hemingway (1899–1961) was serving as a volunteer with the Red Cross on the Italian Front during World War I when he was seriously wounded by mortar fire. He was just 18. Later he would write, “When you go to war as a boy you have a great illusion of immortality. Other people get killed; not you.... Then when you are badly wounded the first time you lose that illusion and you know it can happen.” “Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars” is the first museum exhibition devoted to one of the most celebrated writers of the 20th century. His direct, spare style influenced successive generations of authors around the world. And tens of millions would read his books and never forget the stories and characters in such masterpieces as “The Sun Also Rises,” “A Farewell to Arms,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and “The Old Man and the Sea.” Organized in partnership with Boston’s John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the exhibition explores the most dynamic period of Hemingway’s creative life, from 1918 to the aftermath of World War II, and his recurrent theme of confronting the fullness of life, and the finality of death, with grace and courage. Utilizing almost 100 rarely exhibited manuscripts and letters,

photographs, drafts and typescripts of stories, first editions, and artifacts from the author’s life, the exhibition reveals the man behind the myth, his struggles and triumphs. “Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars” is on view at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City through Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016. “It is difficult to capture in a single quotation the importance of Ernest Hemingway to literary history,” said Peggy Fogelman, acting director of the Morgan. “His influence on writers is

multigenerational, ongoing, and worldwide. His stories and novels form the very foundation of modern literature. His life, itself, from expatriate Paris in the 1920s to Key West and Cuba, is the stuff of legend. The Morgan is deeply honored to partner with the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum to present this landmark exhibition and offer an intimate view of one of the great icons of American literature,” said Fogelman, “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Morgan on this first-of-its-kind exhibition capturing Hemingway as he revolutionized the literary landscape. The Nobel-Prize laureate is often portrayed as a larger-thanlife figure. The materials on display, most for the very first time, will serve to humanize the man and edify his creative talent, ”said Tom Putnam, Kennedy Library director.

Exhibition Prelude “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, some are strong at the broken places,” -Ernest Hemingway In the early 1920s Hemingway had recovered from his war wounds and was determined to make his living as a writer. He moved to Paris with his wife, Hadley, and became part of a group of artists who found in the “City of Light” a conducive environment for work. His constellation of friends and acquaintances would include F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, and Joan Miró, among others. Sylvia Beach’s legendary bookstore, Shakespeare and Company, served as a gathering place. Looking back on those years, Hemingway would famously write, “If you are lucky (Continued on page 13)

Civil War Movie Posters And Memorabilia The American Civil War was waged from 1861 to 1865, pitting North against South in one of history’s bloodiest conflicts. The Civil War, or the War Between the States, as it has also been called, lasted four years, three weeks and six days, resulting in a frightful 1,030,000 casualties and forever changing history. War has always been a fertile subject for Hollywood, and the American Civil War is no exception. Here are ten top Civil War movies and the collectible memorabilia they generated. 1. “Gone with the Wind” (1939). The mega blockbuster of Civil War films, “Gone with the Wind” is based on the sweeping 1936 historical novel by Margaret Mitchell. Set in the South, the David O. Selznick production was budgeted at a
then-staggering $3.9 million and features Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Thomas Mitchell, Evelyn Keyes and Olivia de Havilland. One of the stunning achievements of the film was the simulated burning of Atlanta, accomplished via a $25,000 controlled inferno staged at MGM’s backlot in Culver City, Calif., which consumed unwanted sets from “King Kong” (1933) and “The Garden of Allah” (1936). “Gone with the Wind” took home nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Victor Fleming) and Best Actress (Vivien Leigh). “Gone with the Wind” (or simply GWTW) remains a huge favorite with collectors. A onesheet poster style DP (27-by-41inches), illustrated by Armando Seguso and depicting the Atlanta Bazaar scene, sold at auction for $20,000 in matted/framed condition. Other GWTW movie memorabilia and their winning auction bids include a signed David O. Selznick hardcover presentation script to costumer W a l t e r Plunkett ($22,500), a
big three-sheet movie poster (41-by-78-inches) in restored fine/very fine condition ($16,730) and an Atlanta National Bank prop check made for the movie ($8,125). 2. “Shenandoah” (1965). Andrew V. McLaglen directed this sentimental film in which the Civil War violently intrudes on the lives of a neutral Virginia farmer and his family. James Stewart heads the cast as crusty widower Charlie Anderson, with Doug McClure, Glenn Corbett, Patrick Wayne, Rosemary Forsyth, Phillip Alford and Katharine Ross in support. A standard one-sheet poster (27-by-41-inches) in fine condition sold at auction for $131.45, while a complete eight-card lobby set in fine/very fine condition brought a top bid of $103.97. 3. “Raintree County” (1957). Made for an estimated $5 million, “Raintree County” was filmed on location in Kentucky, Indiana, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee, with MGM’s backlot #3 in Culver City, Calif., serving as the fictional town of Freehaven in Raintree County, Ind. An Indiana schoolteacher (Montgomery Clift) marries Southern belle Susanna Drake (Elizabeth Taylor), joins the Union Army and searches for his missing wife and son amidst the chaos of the vanquished South. A 22-page pressbook, featuring the movie’s entire

media campaign, including sample poster and lobby card images, brought a top bid of $60.95 in very fine condition, while a complete set of eight theater lobby cards in fine condition sold for $89.63. 4. “Friendly Persuasion” (1956). Gary Cooper and Dorothy McGuire head the cast of this $3 million film in which a Quaker family’s pacifism is sorely tested when Morgan’s Raiders threaten their homestead in southern Indiana. Pat Boone scored a No. 5 hit on the pop charts with the movie’s theme song “Friendly Persuasion (Thee I Love).” An insert poster (14-by-36-inches) in folded very fine condition sold at auction for $62. A twopage amendment movie contract signed by Gary Cooper brought a top bid of $310.70. 5. “Glory” (1989). Matthew Broderick stars as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the white commander of the all-AfricanAmerican 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment (Continued on page 9)

There would be no peace in his time.” Section 3 — Paris “Paris was the place,” said Gertrude Stein, “that suited us who were to create the 20th century art and literature.” Hemingway took up residence in Paris in January 1922. “learned a lot” from Stein “though not half as much as he learned from Ezra Pound or one tenth as much as he learned from James Joyce.” Hemingway covered the Greco-Turkish war in September–October 1922, and from that time began to regularly publish his poetry and short stories in literary magazines. enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.” With the city as his backdrop, Hemingway would launch a career that in the next two decades saw the completion of five novels, two works of nonfiction, and five collections of short stories, most of which have taken their rightful place in the canon of 20th century American literature. The Exhibition Section 1 — The Class Prophet In his famous 1958 interview for “The Paris Review,” George Plimpton asked, “Can you recall an exact moment when you decided to become a writer?” Hemingway replied, “No, I always wanted to be a writer.” Hemingway began writing and publishing in his teens, his first fiction appearing in “Tabula,” his high school magazine. In 1917 he took a job as a cub reporter at “The Kansas City Star,” where he learned the essentials of good writing from the newspaper’s style-sheet. Rule number one was, “Use short sentences. Use short first paragraphs. Use vigorous English.” Other rules included, “Avoid the use of adjectives,” and “eliminate every superfluous word.” Hemingway remained with the “Star” for a relatively short period, from October 1917 until he enlisted in April 1918, but the precepts he learned there shaped his literary style and endured forever. Section 2 — World War I “The reason you are so sore, you missed the war,” Hemingway told F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925, “because war is the best subject of all. It groups the maximum of material and speeds up the action and brings out all sorts of stuff that normally you have to wait a lifetime to get.” Hemingway’s participation in World War I was brief, but its impact on his writing career was profound. In spring 1918 Hemingway enlisted in the American Red Cross and arrived in Italy on June 4. Little over a month later he was severely wounded. After a series of operations to remove 227 shrapnel fragments and bullets from his legs, he returned to the United States in January 1919. writer of fiction and, in doing so, forged a new style in literature. When “In Our Time” was published in 1925, “The New York Times” commented that “his language is fibrous and athletic, colloquial and fresh, hard and clean, his very prose seems to have an organic being of its own.” Included in this section is a letter written to Hemingway by F. Ernest Hemingway (Continued from page 13)
Scott Fitzgerald in December 1926. Fitzgerald was an early champion of Hemingway’s work and wrote to congratulate him on the critical reception of “The Sun Also Rises,” saying “I’m delighted with what press I’ve already seen of The Sun ect. Did not realize that you had stolen it all from me but am prepared to believe that its true & shall tell everyone. By the way I liked it in print even better than in manuscript.” Section 4 — Key West and Havana Hemingway resided in Paris until the end of 1929. For the next 10 years he lived mostly in Key West, Fla., with his second wife, Pauline, although he returned periodically to Europe to attend the Fiesta San Fermín in Pamplona, Spain. In the spring of 1939, Martha Gellhorn, who would become his third wife, rented a farmhouse, the Finca Vigia near Havana. Hemingway moved in with her, and they purchased the house shortly after their marriage in November 1940. Hemingway’s literary fame grew steadily in the 1930s on the heels of the highly successful 1929 publication of “A Farewell to Arms,” which he completed in Key West. The exhibition includes the first two pages of the manuscript with the famous opening paragraph: “In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear and swiftly moving and
blue in the channels. Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees. The trunks of the trees too were dusty and leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves.” This section also features a September 1929 letter from Dorothy Parker to Hemingway accompanying a draft of a profile of him she was writing for “The New Yorker.” Nervously, she writes, “part of the Artist’s Reward is having shit like this written about you.” While Hemingway maintained his fierce commitment to literature, he also indulged his passions, and it proved to be a decade of diverse adventure and excitement for him. He published a collection of short stories, “Winner Take Nothing” (1933), wrote fiction and journalism for “Esquire” and “Cosmopolitan,” hunted in Sun Valley, Idaho, and on the Serengeti Plain, and fished the Gulf Stream. In 1937 he reported on the Spanish Civil War, which he prophesied as “the” dress rehearsal for the inevitable European war, and drew upon his experiences in Spain for the novel that consolidated his literary reputation in 1940, “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Section 5 — World War II In the mid 1930s Hemingway was vehemently isolationist. “Of the hell broth that is brewing in Europe,” he told his “Esquire” magazine readers, “we have no

need to drink. Europe has always fought, the intervals of peace are only Armistices. We were fools to be sucked in once on a European war and we should never be sucked in again.” But in the same article he also observed ruefully that “No catalogue of horrors ever kept men from war.” His own first-hand knowledge of war, and its fatal dangers, did not keep Hemingway at home. In 1944, upon returning to Europe to report the war for “Collier’s” magazine, he explained his presence at the front line by saying, “I got war fever like the measles.” He was widely admired not only by many of his fellow war correspondents, but also by military personnel, who saw him as an “imaginative military technician and strategist.” Colonel Charles T. Lanham, commanding officer of the 22nd Regiment, described Hemingway as “the bravest man he ever knew.” On view in this section is a heavily-bearded Hemingway’s Overseas Visa issued by the Allied Supreme Command. The ASC would later bring charges against the writer that he had taken on a combat role in his coverage of the war. Section 6 — An Old Hunter Talking with Gods “Writing well is impossibly difficult,” Hemingway told George Plimpton, and “the time to work is shorter all the time and if you waste it you feel you have committed a sin for which there is no forgiveness.” After the end of the Second World War, the austere discipline that had always been self-imposed and which had served Hemingway so well from his earliest days as a writer grew increasingly burdensome to him.
He became more keenly aware that, as Eliot put it, “every attempt / Is a wholly new start, and a different kind of failure.” Hemingway continued to write prolifically but finishing what he had begun became more and more difficult. Depression and deteriorating health took their toll on his creativity. After the mostly negative reviews of his 1950 novel “Across the River and Into the Trees” he published only one more book, “The Old Man and the Sea,” for which he received the 1952 Pulitzer Prize. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in literature in 1954 “for his mastery of the art of narrative and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style.” Organization and Sponsorship “Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars” is co-curated by Declan Kiely, Robert H. Taylor curator and department head of literary and historical manuscripts at the Morgan Library & Museum, and Susan Wrynn, Hemingway curator at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum. This is an exhibition by the Morgan Library & Museum in collaboration with the Ernest Hemingway Collection at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. Lead funding for this exhibition is provided by Karen H. Bechtel, with additional generous support from Tina Santi Flaherty and the Charles E. Pierce Jr. Fund for Exhibitions. The Morgan Library & Museum is located at 225 Madison Ave., at 36th St., New York, N.Y. To learn more, call 212-685-0008 or visit www.themorgan.org.

ASK ABOUT OUR PHOTOS ON APPROVAL SERVICE
Since 1978 we have housed an eclectic mix of 17th-20th century antiques, collectibles, paper and advertising items including over 2,000 historical documents. Thousands of photo archives depicting Hollywood celebrities, musicians of all genres, sports legends, and world leaders. Other items include first edition books, classic magazines, legal and illegal casino memorabilia, antique jewelry, Hummels, and vintage signs. “We are just temporary custodians of the artifacts,” says proprietor and resident researcher Jim Episale. It’s something that all of us, both young and old, can share, enjoy and treasure, we sell the objects that people throw away and thus help preserve the past.
