Problem Finding We visited two care centers, observing the environment and operation in the kitchen. We discovered that the elderly had very few chances to cook personally, while staff members usually cooked large amount of food once. The main reason why the elderly were prohibited to cook was all about security concerns, giving rise to some of the elderly who has the desire to cook having no chance to do it personally. Thus, we decided to design the problems they concerned.

We did some research about the wok, and found some major problems-wok too heavy, hard to fry and where to put the
lid. The woks nowadays were heavy, too bulky, and the handles
were tilted upwards. The points above not only caused cooking problems but also contributed to the discomfort of hand
movements. People needed to complete the process of cooking with an abnormal hand pose. Moreover, it caused a burden to the elderly gradually.

To solve the problems above, we refered to some research, and investigated every handles of the woks nowadays were above the wok surface and were tilted upwards, which forced us to give more strength to lift the wok.
Meanwhile, the problems also caused a so-called “ulnar deviation movement,

different woks in many markets to brainstorm. We found out that almost
not to mention rotating the wok. According to the points above, we decided to design a handle which could get closer to the center of gravity and reduce pressure.

Modeling We tried a variety of shapes of handles, and used washbowl to replace wok, sticking the handles to the edge of the washbowl to test model. We
thought of C shaped and T shaped before, but
after testing, these shapes all gave pressure to fingers. Thus, we revised the place of affording the pressure,

using palm to handle it.
We attempted to joint the handle and the center horizontal line together, and discovered that it was
much lighter than any other ways to joint. Therefore we continued to adopt this idea. Moreover, in order
to meet the shape of the hand, we used a curve-like
shape, and then modified it to let it more comfortable to grasp meanwhile reduced burden.

Fine Modeling We used orange and grey to differentiate the handle. As the main color, orange represented
friendly, optimistic and meanwhile eye-catching, which made the elderly pay attention to. The
grey part was where people grasped. We studied the pose of gripping, sketched the outline and it easier for the elderly to use.

Telephone-shaped handle was more closer to
the center of gravity, reducing the weight of lifting the wok. Enlarging the end of the handle made users grip smoothly.

The particular angle of the handle gave you a easy way to grasp and

only required few space.
Pouring Food Easily
When pouring food, the horizontal line
of the handle passed through the center
of gravity of the wok, making rotating the wok more easily with only little strength.
