What is a Space? Space is one of the elements of design of architecture, as space is continuously studied for its usage. Architectural designs are created by carving space out of space, creating space out of space, and designing spaces by dividing this space using various tools, such as geometry, colors, and shapes. It is an undefined expanse of land given to an architect to define.
movement or lack of such capabilities and how that movement took action, flow or stoppage . Space is created by a specific set of natural and artificial things whose architecture is involved in its creation . Everything which has no space is not architecture. Every building creates two spaces at the same time: interior space and exterior space. Interior space is the essence and basis of architecture.

one can somewhat reserve engineer the architects intent and method of designing a building. Architectural analysis can be done by observing some of the following aspects of building design & experiences. Experiencing space and meaning:• • • • •
Scale. Approach to a building. Entrance to a building. Layout of spaces. Public and semi public spaces. • Private and semi private areas. • Visual Connections: Interior
• Passages. • Connection betweens spaces. Furniture layouts: • Functionality of the space. • Service areas and their treatment. Materials and Finishes: • Architectural. • Interior Spaces. Lighting: • Artificial. • Natural. • Transformation of space through the Spam of a day and random. Climatological Factors: • • • • •
Wind direction. Sun path/Orientation. Humidity. Vegetation. Quality of light.
Space is a basic tool of architecture. It is what is created, when forming geometrical 3D structures with mass, an other element of architecture. It is the air between objects, the nothingness. It can be perceived because of the existence of light, the qualities of which are in turn used to make beautiful and meaningful rooms. Space is anywhere, both in and outside of buildings and it is formed by all objects whether man made of not. Conventions of creating space and conceptions of it vary greatly from culture to another.
Architectural space can be perceived objectively and feel directly and it can identify by its defining elements. The relation between inside and outside, which is the first aspect of objective space, shows that spaces have various levels of extension and surrounding. Space can be identified by its limitation elements and its character followed by the condition and the order established among these elements. These elements include: floor, ceiling, wall, material and surface, openings.
A space is the dimensions of height, depth, and width within which all things exist and move. How do we visualize a space? Space can and should be perceived through the capabilities (potentially) of

Introduction • Born in 1919 • Educated at Royal College and Middle Temple, London and became a Lawyer. • Studied architecture in Architectural Association, London in 1956 • In 1957, at the age of 38 , returned to Sri Lanka qualified as an architect to take over Reid’s practice. Philosophy
Architect Study: Geoffrey Bawa The Sri Lankan Architect Geoffrey Bawa is now regarded as having been one of the most important and influential Asian architects of the twentieth century. His international standing was confirmed in 2001 when he received the special chairman’s award in the eighth cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, becoming only the third architect and the first non-Moslem to be so honoured since the award’s inception. Early life of Bawa Geoffrey Bawa’s family background neatly reflects the ethnic and cultural diversity of his native Sri Lanka. His paternal grandfather, Amaduwa Bawa, was a Moslem lawyer from the ancient Arab port of Beruwela who traveled to England to further his studies and there married Georgina Ablett, an Englishwoman of French Huguenot extraction. Their eldest son, Benjamin, became one of the most successful Colombo lawyers of his generation and in 1908 married Bertha Marion Schrader, a Dutch Burgher of mixed European and Sinhalese descent. That marriage produced two sons: Bevis born in 1909 and Geoffrey born in 1919. Benjamin Bawa died in 1923 and his sons were brought up by their mother and two maiden aunts in their Darley Road home. 12
• Highly personal in his approach, evoking the pleasures of the senses that go hand in hand with the climate, landscape, and culture of ancient Ceylon(Present day Sri Lanka). • Brings together an appreciation of the Western humanist tradition in architecture with needs and lifestyles of his own country. • The principal force behind TROPICAL MODERNISM. • He has work with a sensitivity to site and context. • His designs break down the barriers between inside and outside, between interior design and landscape architecture. • He reduced buildings to a series of scene graphically conceived spaces separated by courtyards and gardens. • His ideas are providing a bridge between the past and the future, a mirror in which ordinary people can obtain a clearer image of their own evolving culture. Bawa’s Work 33rd Lane (Geoffrey Bawa’s House in Colombo – Sri Lanka) – 1959-1970. Geoffrey Bawa’s house in Colombo (1959 – 1970) is an exercise in horizontal densification. The result of decades-old process of annexation of four rows of existing bungalows is a labyrinth of rooms and garden courts where the traditional hierarchies of figure-ground or insideoutside relations disappear, while the illusion of a limitless space is created. 13

Composition of the concepts
Initial Exploration on papers: Initial concepts were derived from the mood board and sketches were created on the basis of the forms derived from the mood and from the ideas derived by spending time at the space.
26
The sketches started with the form generation, and forms were put up in different color options. Then putting the forms with different sizes and creating multiple composition
with adding textures, colors and considering techniques. The concepts derived were mostly geometrical and group of forms combined together. These ideas helped me to convert the paper concepts into fabrics, and to help understand the play of the forms in the surface.
27
Fabric Explorations
Fabric Samples The samples are derived from the initial sketches and then converted them into real swatches by using different techniques using the skills of, dyeing, Tie & Dye. Using running stitch and different embroidery stitch. The initial samples were derived from the tie & dye techniques and adding embroidery stitches on the pattern. The colors derived 28
from the palette used in the samples. The contrast color threads are used for the embroidery. The ideas was to create a canopy which can be sourced locally. The other set of swatches are using patchwork using different color of fabrics, and the forms were derived from the mood board. The swatches were having layers, so was not suitable for the canopy, it was having lot
of weight and was not able to get hanged on the canopy easily and required more maintenance. The other sets were derived using machine stitches, The idea was to create swatches using the waste of the hotel using dyeing and other panels stitched together in the form derived from the mood board.
