PHULKARI EMBROIDERY Haryana Phulkari embroidery technique, originating from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, literally means flower (phul) work (kari). Malwa, the south eastern region of Punjab, and Haryana are the main hubs of phulkari embroidery now. Originally embroidered by grandmothers for their granddaughters on coarse cotton during marriages and festivals, Phulkari threadwork uses linear stitches to create intricate flower-like geometric patterns. This time-intensive, colorful embroidery is now experiencing a resurgence by being incorporated into home dĂŠcor items such as cushion covers, table cloths, and wall hangings.

WARLI ART MAHARASHTRA Warli art is found in the tribal wall paintings of the Warli tribe of Maharashtra. The art is centered around the concept of nature and daily life, depicting images of humans, animals, and scenes, such as hunting, dancing, sowing, and harvesting. White is the only color used in creating these paintings, with occasional dots in red and yellow. Today, these paintings are a popular fashion motif, with designers directly painting or printing the art on raw silk or cotton to create unique sarees and home dĂŠcor items.

KHATWA BIHAR Khatwa is one of India’s lesser known art forms representing the appliqué work of Bihar, and is commonly used to create tents, canopies, shamianas, sarees, cushion covers, curtains, and much more. In garments, such as caps and blouses, embroidery is combined with appliqué. Usually made with a light background color, this technique sews together pieces of waste cloth to create a unique design each time. The motifs include human figures, trees, flowers, animals, and birds.
