Like a mirror, the arts reflects reality and yet presents life in a way that transcends reality. The ingredients of artistic creations come from what is seen and heard when you are living in the moment. The learning of the arts is not just about distinguishing artistic quality, but, more importantly, perceiving the broadness and depth of life through the arts, and nurturing the root of awareness. When is the best time to let it germinate, if not today? Don’t abandon the seeds by the roadside, on a drought barren land or among the thorns and let the golden seeds decay.

“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming.” — Albert Einstein Learning Arts can expand creativity and imagination. Engaging with artwork, attending performances and experiencing the making of arts are all about learning to wonder about as well as to wonder at. Arts is capable of furnishing learners with mind of many wonders, releasing their imaginations, enriching the understanding of the world thus in making them more capable people. However, we are living in probably the most complex and chaotic era of human existence. As such through arts, one can learn to become more creative and innovative, but most importantly to become resilient, empathetic, visionary and self-regulated human beings.

How can we imagine the future of our world without any boundaries and pre-conception? Sometimes people consider performing arts education as only a hobby or an entertainment but it can achieve far more than that! Engagement in performing arts allows us to see the new possibilities and potential in ourselves, and most importantly, the sharing of one’s thoughts with others regardless of their age, ethnic identities or educational backgrounds etc - performing arts is an universal language and touches people at the heart. The lively interaction between participants in the performing arts joins them together, while the dynamic and momentum it produces break them away from the usual ways of looking at themselves, others and the world. This new insight gives them inspiration and motivation to imagine a world which is yet to be created.

LEADING Exploration means constantly extending your boundaries. Through self-discovery, one returns to the origin. You need to be able to perceive and imagine the world in its wide context. Your mind is thus open. You can connect with other fellow human beings, while re-discovering your own virtues. You build pathways to link things together. When the arts takes place, those pioneers in front keep an eye on those at the back; those at the back attend to those in front. They extend their shared realm and change their pursuits. They go after excellence and innovation, exploring the possibilities of the world.

“Embarking on a 3D Journey – Search Diversely, Think Discreetly, Use Distinctively” The education reforms and the introduction of creative education concepts in recent years have changed the role of drama in education. The social welfare sector has even extended the practice of drama to aspects such as personal growth and social inclusion. This in turn enables drama to be applied to different occasions. The conference focused on subjects, including drama and arts education development, drama and language education reforms, the promotion of plural society and social inclusion, the social development and viability of applied theatre, and the influence of drama on the cultivation of traditional Chinese culture. Members from the education sector and the social welfare sector were able to acquire drama knowledge and practices in response to Hong Kong’s demands for drama education. The conference was co-presented with Hong Kong Drama/Theatre and Education Forum, with the goal to increase the number of affiliates from international or local arts workers, arts organisations, schools, educational institutions, scholars, teachers and communities in the neighbourhood, in order to build networks to promote the development of drama education in Hong Kong.

Reaching A process of thinking and action; arts begins with an individual and extends to a group. The arts is within every one of us. To let the arts shines, we cannot remain at the starting point, waiting for things to happen and congratulating ourselves. On the contrary, we should let the creations proliferate to reach higher and further. The height and depth of our mind increase and broaden our horizons. We believe the arts as a bridge of learning, allowing us to experience simultaneously the creation, appreciation and analysis of works. In the process, we capture the inspiration of living. Through the arts, we enable participants to arrive at another destination.

If everyone is endowed with the seed of the arts, it’s inevitable that their path of growth is met with doubts and puzzles. Yet, in this journey, there is always someone who is willing to give you a hand to stimulate your boundless imagination and limitless creativity, offering you the opportunities to appreciate performances and the arts. Every first-hand experience and aesthetic cultivation, applied with the skills acquired along the way, can become a melody. The orchestration will extend the story and turn into tradition. The fruits of the arts can then be passed down from generation to generation. smARTS Journey (Stimulating Minds through ARTS) (2008 – 2013) The project provided opportunities for primary and secondary school students and teachers to appreciate arts and stimulate their creativity through a series of educational activities. “When the City is overturned, the Arts stands up for itself” Through the involvement of the arts year in and year out, a community environment is created and becomes an organic entity. In fact, at any spot on the streets and alleys, there are people that create spectacles, which then bring about sentiments. When the arts is brought to the community, we try to look for space for us to co-exist, lowering the threshold for the arts and stimulating people’s understanding and imagination towards space and the arts. Under the auspices of Bloomberg Philanthropies, “Performing Arts Marathon” community arts project offered primary and secondary school students and community members performing arts education workshops “in the eyes of arts” to explore the time, space and people of the community. The Arts Mobile, in particular, expanded the usage of public spaces, creating opportunities of performing arts appreciation among members of the public. This project was acknowledged by the UNESCO Arts in Education Observatory for Research in Local Cultures and Creativity in Education as a “Star” Projects/Programs(SPP) and received the 2012 Hong Kong Development Silver Award for Arts Education (Non-School Division) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Starting from 2010, we had organised four projects to build performing arts networks and platforms to link up the youths in the community with young artists.

28

“LIfe Blog Community Arts Projects” Since April 2010, around 130 young people had taken up the role as arts ambassadors, after acquiring skills from workshops on music, drama, street dance and choreography. Prior to a showcase at the Academy, they promoted the arts and presented public performances on a voluntary basis. This programme was supported by the Home Affairs Bureau and worked in partnership with The Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (BGCA). “Strangers Project” Since April 2010, artists and youths from Mess Up The Mess Theatre Company from Wales and Inspired Productions from New Zealand had collaborated with over 30 youths from BGCA and local artists to participate in a 5-day international exchange camp at the Academy. “Showing U @ Y2” From July 2010 to July 2011, we linked up participants from the multimedia community arts project “Strangers” with alumni of the Academy. They integrated multiple art forms, such as dance, drama, photography and videography in their creations, which were showcased at Youth Square in Chai Wan. Through various arts events, including outdoor performances, open classes and rehearsals, multi-media exhibition, behind-the-scene seminar and theatre performance, they shared with the public their creative process, as well as their arts journey and experiences. “Strangers Project” and “Showing U@Y2” were presented by Youth Square, supported by the Home Affairs Bureau, and produced by the Academy. “Spotlight on Young Musicians” From 2011 to 2012, we provided local young musicians with a platform to unleash their creativity and to stage professional performances, while displaying their musical talent and out-of-the-box imagination. The project encompassed classical music, contemporary music, jazz, Chinese music and multi-media performances, such as dance and singing. Participants learned how to break the mould to create and experiment with different forms of music. In the collaboration, young musicians demonstrated their passion for music and their pursuit for excellence. Apart from performances, we also organised seminars and educational activities to bring music to new audiences. We would like to show people that talented artists are also keen on giving back to society, while encouraging emerging musicians and music lovers. This programme was commissioned by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, presented and produced by the Academy.

03 Communicating

Knowledge and Resource Sharing 32

Audience development, in the end, is about arts education and communication with the public, so that the public understand more of the value and significance of arts

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts

Extracted from the interview of “ArtsEd in Chat” 33

34

Communicating The integration and passing down of knowledge are never easy. Those who are equipped with knowledge naturally shoulder the responsibility to share it. Performing arts exists in the moment; it is an “art of grief. Despite the excitement during the performance, everything becomes a memory with the passage of time. We try to capture such vivid experience through spoken and written words. We extract its essence and share it, hoping the sharing may produce fruitful outcomes in the present and future.

Distinguished artists, masters and educators in the field were invited to conduct engaging and inspiring lectures and workshops to community practitioners, advocates of performing arts education and interested listeners since 2007. This project aimed to facilitate the exchange of innovative ideas, raise awareness of the performing arts in the community and promote the development of performing arts education. In 2015/16, we presented the “Non-credit Bearing Lectures Series” to invite guest speakers from the Academy as well as local and overseas art scene to present their works, ideas and experiences in an interactive way. Speakers we have invited so far include Chan Wai, Yank Wong, Tse Chi-tak, Ellis Yip, Pong Yat-ming, Peter Moser etc.

36

The series can be categorised into three main themes: . Music of the Community (community music) When you sing, your heart echoes the melody. Is the reverberating sound at this moment a breathtaking melody or the endless everyday noise? Musical instruments are indispensable when we play music. We also need to approach the mass public by ourselves to make it happen. . Stories of the City (story-telling) Savouring the city’s trivia is like a little chick learning to walk. Catch the scent; relish the taste; listen to the sound; have a good meal. As long as there is adventure, everything is delectable. . Souls of the Building (audience, space and participation) Wandering the streets as a lone observer, you see a crowded alley. On your own, you walk against the crowd to explore the empty space within the city.

04 Generating

Collaboration Research & Development 40

More and more, the arts are going to shape what’s going to happen in education

Professor Ralph Buck

University of Auckland, New Zealand

Extracted from the interview of “ArtsEd in Chat” 41

42

Generating There are three days in life: yesterday, today and tomorrow. Learning is the transfer of knowledge. More importantly, it requires handson practice. Experience is built upon the trials, failures, corrections and further trials in the past. The discoveries today stem from past experience and knowledge; we transform and refine the explorations of our ancestors so as to anticipate the future. The more we discover, the less we realise we know. Contemplating the past and the future, while living in the moment, the culmination in the arts is like threading these three days together.

“Battle for Hong Kong 1941” Interactive Drama at The Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence

When yesterday is gone, the enduring history reemerges. It’s reflection; it’s perspective. Students followed the actors’ pace to traverse a historical scene they’d never gone through. With modern day wisdom, they reflected on the past’s right and wrong. Making use of the Museum’s setting, actors guided students to analyse the performance with theories. The experience would create more possibilities for the future development of the theatre. History, drama and education are interdependent and their interaction creates meaningful outcomes, equipping students with knowledge and allowing actors to go further in their exploration. Unlike conventional drama performances, interactive theatre is a unique creation marrying theatre with education objectives. It emphasises the interaction between actors/teachers and participants. Through active participation, the participants learn within a theatre setting. This educational event was divided into two sections: preperformance workshops and interactive theatre at the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence.

44

Students first participated in the pre-performance workshops. Through Process Drama activities, they gained an initial idea of the historical background and the setting of the performance. Afterwards, students visited the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence to take part in the interactive performance. Actors also took up the role as a teacher, “acting while teaching”. They time-travelled with students along the Historical Trail and inside the Exhibition Galleries. Being in the characters’ shoes, students were able to get involved in the drama through appreciation, participation, imagination and evaluation. Students in turn could learn about the history behind the historical monument from various perspectives. This programme was sponsored by Leisure and Cultural Services Department and HSBC.

Documentary of “Changing Hong Kong” Museum Interactive Drama

From concepts to text, from rehearsals to public performances, every footprint was recorded. We captured the bits and pieces of each performance with video recording – be it the moment the director was working painstakingly on the creation, or the moment the actors were rehearsing whole-heartedly, or the moment curious students were being amazed. These faces and motions brought about the fruit of collective dedication. Documenting the interactive theatre is more than recording the hard work. More importantly, it helps integrate the path of a creation, presenting faithfully the objective, process and outcome. Regardless of future changes, our accumulated experience always stays with us; regardless of future transformations, our endeavours will not be erased, as we have captured them in the videos. Documenting the creative process and performance of “Changing Hong Kong” Museum Interactive Drama enables teachers, students, curators, education practitioners and the general public to understand specifically the possibilities of interactive museum drama. Thus, they can use it as performing arts teaching materials and references. “Changing Hong Kong” Museum Interactive Drama was sponsored by Leisure and Cultural Services Department and HSBC.

Curriculum and Professional Education 48

We believe the performing arts is an essential component of a student’s education no matter what career track they may eventually follow

The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts 49

50

Inheriting Every person is endowed with the sprouts of the arts. Its flowers are rooted in daily life. Space enables the roots to germinate; space gives the arts freedom; space facilitates learning that creates the future. Learning the arts in this era, one needs to confront the confusion of truth and falsehood and experience the tug-of-war between speed and slowness, while maintaining rationality and emotional sensitivity. An old generation departs and a new generation arrives. They meet in the space of the arts, where education takes place. A new world is seen through the eyes of the teachers and the students and their horizons are broadened. Hence, what is essential can be passed down to the future generations.

“Applied Learning Courses”

“The Essentials of Dramatic Arts” “Taking a Chance on Dance” “Introduction to Cantonese Opera” The moment we use imagination in our daily life is the moment we are really able to apply what we have learned. After class, students return to everyday life to search, observe, listen and perceive, giving their life more dimensions physically and spiritually. This learning journey allows participants to engage in in-depth exchange and interaction with students from other schools. On the other hand, from teachers specialised in different subjects, students can also appreciate the arts as a pursuit, as well as the derived perseverance and passion. This in turn inspires their future direction and goals. Since 2010, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts offers three specially designed “Applied Learning Courses (ApL)”, including “The Essentials of Dramatic Arts” , “Taking a Chance on Dance”, and “Introduction to Cantonese Opera” as part of the Senior Secondary Curriculum by the Education Bureau. Based on the education vision of “triple-unit learning: performance, creation and appreciation”, the courses allow students to acquire the knowledge and theories in the respective performing arts genres 52

through application and practice. This in turn develops their generic skills in a performing arts context. The courses focus on developing students’ foundation skills, thinking skills, interpersonal skills, values, attitudes and career-related competencies so as to prepare students for further studies and lifelong learning.
