BARBARA Í GONGINI SPRING - SUMMER 2013
If I were to sum up my feelings about the Barbara í Gongini show I went to see in the beginning of August, I believe the most proper word to use is “confused”. I thought I knew what I was going to see: only dark clothes, and a completely autonomous universe. Oh boy, I was very wrong. Before I arrived at TAP 2, in Copenhagen where the show was being held, I had very high expectations, because just like Danish designers e.g. Stine Goya and Anne Sofie Madsen, Barabara í Gongini is a brand with an ability to drag the audience into another world. Looking back at previous seasons, Gongini created a dark, mysterious atmosphere with only black-, white-, and grey clothing. Everything was truly original and everybody I spoke to after the show would die for a wardrobe in the spirit of Gongini. But it is a matter of fact that Gongini’s universe has changed. The colour of the clothing has turned louder, and through the first part of the show, all of the clothes were in bright yellow, which you must say, is certainly not a suitable colour for a dark and mysterious universe. You could argue, that it is refreshing with bright colours on the catwalk, especially since the collection is meant for spring and summer, but I really believe that they ruin the spirit of Gongini. If we wanted to get inspired by colours, we would attend the Stine Goya show, which always is full of cute pat-

terns and soft colours. That said, I think the rest of the show was phenomenal! It was raw, rough, and certainly in the spirit of Barbara í Gongini! The clothing was (besides yellow) kept in white, grey and black colours, and picked up the best of Gongini: t-shirts and leggings full of holes, asymmetric dresses, and very high but sculptural shoes. All of the models were wearing huge wigs and their outfits were layered in the very right way. Maybe the first three minutes of the show were a failure and a disappointment, but the next ten definitely made up for it! Suddenly I forgot all about the dresses in loud yellow, and flew into Gongini’s fascinating universe. But when the show was over, I couldn’t help thinking about how little innovative the clothing actually was. We have seen it all before at e.g. Rick Owens and Maison Martin Margiela. There is nothing ground-breaking in creating dark and ripped clothes in 2012, and Gongini is just another fashion house in the “consumer-competition”. But don’t we all agree with the fact that it is almost impossible to create anything brand new and ground-breaking? I think, despite of the neon clothes and the international competition, that the show oozed of quality, originality and almost serenity. Barbara í Gongini just have to find itself properly.
