The Inlet, Ithaca, NY | Site Research & Analysis

[in] Habiting The Inlet

D e s i g n S t u d i o Fa l l 2 0 1 2 T h e I n l e t , I t h a c a , N e w Yo r k

After careful consideration of the existing spatial and programmatic conditions in the downtown Ithaca area I noted how its main spine and adjacent spaces had been developed and contained the infrastructure for a sustainable operation: dining, retail, leisure, green s p a c e , a r t s , i n s t i t u t i o n a l a n d o ffi c e b u i l d i n g s , e t c . I therefore looked at The Inlet, walking distance from the downtown area, as a possible space for development located in between the dense urban fabric and the more spread out mountaineous condition that exists in Cayuga Lake. The idea was to develop a space and program that made active use of the site in both its adjacency to the downtown area and unique location which provides great views and access to water activities. The Inlet could therefore work as a second and equally important destination in the downtown Ithaca area.

The proposal for The Inlet consists of two hotels: one short term and one long term. They are placed above a public strip that plays with interior and exterior conditions to provide a space for leisure and entertainment usable all year long.
