EDITORIAL Here we go with our Fall 2016 issue and the first thing you all are going to notice is a change in style. I know many of you are already thinking, “Why are they going to change the style of the magazine?” Truth be told, this change has been coming for some time. When we added the print edition, I quite simply thought, “I’ve done layout before how hard can a magazine be?” Well one year into the plan and I can tell you there are is a lot more that goes into the print version than I could have ever photos courtesy omniversal.com

imagined. Just the spelling and grammar alone eats up days and day of time. When you have an E-zine, you can make changes anytime and that is just one little difference in moving to a print version. Nevertheless, here we are Fall 2016, I hope you like the changes we have made, please let us know.

As the Wheel turns (sounds like a Pagan nighttime soap opera or should be) to my favorite time of year…Autumn! I’m not sure what it is about the season, maybe it’s the ability to wear sweaters, the crispness that is in the air, all the beautiful colors that nature shows us, or the fact that I can be outside without “burning up”. Whatever the case may be, I’m usually elated when fall arrives. But I find myself a little melancholy just the same. This has been a big year for myself and my family. In addition to ta-

A Year Of Anger This Year Has Seen a Whole Lot of Anger. This Anger, if left unchecked, may burn through our community and destroy more than just our connections. As the year comes to a close, I look back on this year and think this was the year of the Angry Pagan. Over this last year, we have seen a lot of anger directed in a lot of different ways, in the views of those who support one presidential candidate or another. The trans-gender question has driven wedges in Homes, Covens and Councils across the country. I have seen Covens and Councils being torn apart over sexual consent questions that arose after gatherings. I won’t even get into the other issues which seem to dominate headlines across this land. All in all, this has been a very angry year. Now, I personally do not have a problem with anger. In fact, I believe anger is helpful. It is good to get the blood pumping as someone stands up and shouts at the top of their lungs about something you would spend a lifetime opposing. But as Pagans, we know as Buddha would say, “Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” We should

How The Gods and Goddesses Can Empower and Enrich Our Lives 16

Pagan Living Magazine Fall 2016

Here we are with thousands of goddesses and gods, from many civilizations around the globe, some of whom originated in the Paleolithic era and some of whom are much more recent. What do we do with them? Many Pagans will say that we do not worship our gods, so much as work with them, partnering with the divine to improve our lives and conditions on this planet. Prayer is not usually part of our practice in the way it is with those who worship a monotheistic God… That is, we do not offer up pure praises to their glory, nor do we send up petitions to the supreme creator and then sit back and hope they are granted. Which is not to say that no Pagan has ever muttered, “Help me out here, Artemis” or “Odin, this is a totally squirrely situation and I could use some ideas!” More than anything else, what we are doing here is invoking the bold action of Artemis or the deep wisdom of Odin that resides within our own minds and personalities. Of course, a hard polytheist might

It is hard to believe harvest time is upon us. It feels like the older you get, the quicker the seasons turn, especially the warm ones. Harvest time was an important time of year for many ancient cultures including the Greek, Roman, and Celtic societies and as a result, there are many gods and goddesses, major and minor, who are associated with crops, agriculture, and the harvest.

LEARNING A NEW GODDESS

A BRIEF VIEW OF

HECATE

I am well aware that Hecate (or Hekate if you will) is probably one of, if not the most well-known of Goddesses in Pagan circles, so one could ask why would we choose her for our Fall Goddess? Well to put simply, to learn more about her.

Pagan Living Magazine Fall 2016

For many modern witchcraft traditions, Hecate is the Dark Goddess and associated with the spirits of the dead, ghosts, the dark of the moon, baneful herbs, curses and black magic. For others, Hecate is the Crone Goddess, ruling over the third stage of a woman’s life, that beyond her childbearing years when she can focus on deepening the skills and information collected throughout her lifetime when knowledge and experience are refined into wisdom. Yet to others, Hecate is associated with crossroads, entrance-ways, dogs, light, magic, witchcraft, knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants, ghosts, necromancy, and sorcery. What is very clear is that Hecate has served many roles. She is an incredibly ancient Goddess with origins stretching back into mists. Yet she is also in post-Christian writings of the Chaldean Oracles (2nd–3rd century CE) where she was regarded

MONEY

Financially Secure Pagan - Part 3

Part Three of Our Ongoing Series to Help You Become a Financially Secure Pagan As we continue our journey to becoming a financially secure pagan, I would like to first take a step back and look at the areas which we have covered. In our Spring 2016 article, we spoke about the need to get organized. In our Summer 2016 article, we learned the differences between income, expenses, and savings. Now, we move forward into the land of investing. First and foremost, let us look into what investments are. In their simplest form, an investment is a gambling tool you can use to increase your income. It is important to understand two vital parts in that last sentence: 1. A gambling tool, 2. You can. Let’s look at the first one: a gambling tool. All investments, no matter how great someone makes them sound, are still gambling with your money. There is no such thing as a “safe”, or “guaranteed” investment. Investments can and do lose money. So why would you consider something where you could lose your money? Because you can also make money on your investment. It is a way where you can increase your income without working more hours. The second part of that sentence is: you can. “You can” is an important concept. Everyone has the ability to make an investment, no matter what your income level. Every investment has a minimum investment level and although, when you start out it may seem out of reach, with planning, you can achieve that goal. Additionally, with investment plans on the web, the cost of getting into an investment is getting lower all the time. So, with all that said, where do you begin? That is completely up to you. There is a wide range of invest-

Working With The Ancestors

Time of Reaping By Rev. Chris Allaun Author of the forthcoming book Underworld: Shamanism, Myth, and Magick Autumn is the time of change, transition, and yes decay. If you look at the natural world around us we notice that the leaves are turning from green to brown and the vegetation is dying off. The next few months, not only are we harvesting what we have planted in the spring, but we are reaping those things in our lives that are no longer helping us upon our path. There are many things that are not propelling us forward in our lives. It may be a job is that is a dead end and has no spiritual value or perhaps a relationship that has ended. If we do not rid ourselves of the emotional and spiritual energy from these events, then they will chain us down and not allow us to go forward. It may seem strange to hear, but we can only hold so much energy in our aura. By allowing old energies to remain, new events and circumstances cannot flow to us and enter our picsart.com
