CHALLENGE
ACCEPTED “IF I WEREN’T SO INSANE, I COULDN’T BE SO BRILLIANT”
8
SEPTEMBER 2014 | THEHEALTHJOURNALS.COM
— THE JOKER i enjoy a challenge. one of the craziest challenges I’ve ever accepted was crossing a railroad trestle over the Rappahannock River. One misstep and I would have fallen to my death. I was 15. As Kenny Chesney sang it, “We were brave, we were crazy, we were mostly— young.” Stupid, too, I’d add. I’m older now and my friend David Cutting and I have been meeting at Starbucks for late lunch every Wednesday to discuss our reading of “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. The book is a 12-week discovery program that challenges creatives to walk in their artistic gifts. Each chapter ends with a series of tasks. One particular week, the challenge asked us to write down five things we would do if they didn’t seem so crazy. On my list were things like base jumping and auditioning for “The Voice.” Then there was one that stuck with me as something I may want to explore— growing out my hair. Challenge accepted. I’ve decided that I’m now crazy enough to grow my hair out. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years, but it didn’t seem fit with my station in life each time I’d considered it. It fits now. And it’s going down. I like the idea of a crazies list. It makes me feel alive and as a result, I’ve experienced more of a creative boost
in my work, in my life, in my marriage and in my parenting. I want to do more crazy. It makes my soul sing. Our Profile this month is Riverside general surgeon Harry Kraus. He left his medial practice to treat patients in Kenya. Wow. But it’s not just what he did, but what his young son said to him that was the game changer. His daring spirit left a lasting impression on his children, two of whom are now aspiring doctors. Also take a peek at our Featured Reader, Torrie Creamer. She waged war on her body when she tipped the scale at 322 pounds. She’s now 148 pounds lighter without fad diets and without surgery—just proper nutrition and exercise. It works, folks. What about you? What would you do if it weren’t so crazy? Make a list, pick one and get started.

road less traveled in his medical career
relocating to africa for six years in the middle of his medical career wasn’t a smart move for Dr. Harry Kraus Jr., in terms of finances or ambition. But what Kraus gained from his decision to focus on oftendesperate patients—sometimes flanked by security guards with automatic weapons—was nothing he’d ever trade. “You cannot see the tragic plight of the poor and underserved without becoming a profoundly grateful person,” he says. “You also learn you
can find common ground with anyone, even if it’s only that a person loves his kids like I love mine.” Kraus, a general surgeon at Riverside Doctors’ Hospital in Williamsburg, Virginia, and a prolific author of medical thrillers, was based in Kenya and did outreach missions to Somalia. He first went to Africa for three weeks in 2002 as a substitute surgeon with a Christian humanitarian organization but opted for longerterm sabbaticals from practice in Harrisonburg, Virginia, partly at the urging of his oldest son, then 13. Over the next 10 years, his family spent a total of six years in Kenya. “He said, ‘Dad, tell Mom to pack her bags—this will be OK for us,’” Kraus, 54 , remembers. Kristine, who became a nurse at her three boys’ international school, also supported Kraus’ trips into Somalia, where a tinted car whisked him around because his skin color attracted too much attention. “We just thought, ‘If not us, then who else is going to help these people?’” Kraus recalls.
Kraus helped train African doctors and handled a wide range of cases, including thyroid growths, esophageal cancer, enlarged prostates and complications from HIV/AIDS and malaria. He saved gunshot victims, removed goiters the size of second heads and treated one 19-year-old woman with an eight-pound breast tumor. His family lived in apartments an hour outside Nairobi, Kenya, where his boys thrilled at adventures such as chasing after giraffes and zebras on motorbikes. Harry and Kristine settled in Williamsburg once all of their children had returned to America for career or college ; one is an Air Force pilot, two are aspiring doctors. He has a new appreciation for how clean and well-equipped American hospitals are but also will conserve resources if possible: “Why use expensive surgical glue for $50 when a 10-cent Band-Aid will do just as well?” As a writer, Kraus has published 19 books, producing about one a year. Along with fictional thrillers starring doctors, he has penned non-fiction volumes centered on faith. Kraus doesn’t rule out a return to Africa in retirement, if he stays healthy. “The experiences that stretched me and my family,” he says, “were the best things that ever happened to us.”
“You also learn you can find common ground with anyone, even if it’s only that a person loves his kids like I love mine.”

Spine
Chest
Makes the spine more elastic; when practiced regularly can correct a slouched posture.
Opens the front side of the body, including throat, chest, pectoral muscles and deltoids.
Upper leg
Hip Flexors
You'll feel a deep stretch along the entire length of the thigh muscles (quadriceps).
Stretches the hips and deep psoas muscles, which can become tight from sitting.
ready? Begin lying face down on a yoga mat or other soft surface. Place your forehead on the mat and arms by your sides, palms facing up. Exhale fully. Inhale and reach your arms behind you, grasping the top of each foot from the outer edge of the foot. Try to keep your knees close together. Release the air from your lungs, and on the next inhale slowly lift the crown of your head, nose, chin and finally chest off the mat. Engage your thighs to lift the knees toward the ceiling. Next press the tops of your feet into the hands to come up higher onto the hip bones and open the chest. Make sure the knees and thighs stay parallel. Hold for at least 10 seconds and very slowly release, reversing the steps until your forehead returns to the mat. If you have difficulty grasping both feet, try by holding one foot at a time to gain flexibility.

THE Sacroiliac Joint
can be a real pain in the butt ❥ WRITTEN BY KIM O’BRIEN ROOT
that pain in your back might be because of a joint that is sometimes overlooked. Yet by addressing this joint—in a minimally invasive procedure performed by a handful of doctors in Hampton Roads—people might be able to help their pain without major surgery. The sacroiliac, or SI, joint located at the base of the spine connects the tailbone to the pelvis. It becomes damaged over time from injury, and sometimes from childbirth. The resulting pain can radiate from the lower back to the buttocks and upper leg. “It drives people crazy,” says Dr. John Aldridge, an orthopedist at Hampton Roads Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Newport News, Virginia. “It causes terrible pain. Most people don’t treat the SI joint because they don’t know what to do with it, so they just manage the pain.” Fusing the SI joint can help. Low back pain can have many causes, and sometimes can be difficult to pinpoint. Determining if pain is caused from the SI joint requires specific diagnostic testing that can include X-rays, CT scans or MRIs and most reliably, injecting the joint with a local anesthetic to see if it brings relief. If symptoms are relieved with this anesthetic, it might mean the SI joint is the culprit. Up to 30 percent of all lower back symptoms are said to be due to the SI joint, but diagnosis is somewhere around only 1 percent, according to Mike Francesca, the Mid-Atlantic regional manager of SI Bone, the 6-year-old company that developed an SI joint
implant system called iFuse. “You really have to pay attention to the signs” of an SI joint issue, Francesca says. “It’s probably the least diagnosed pathology.” Historically, fairly major operations were needed to fuse the SI joint— requiring a big incision in the back, Aldridge says. Other surgical back procedures done to alleviate pain require fusing vertebrae together to keep the bones from slipping against each other. Since April, Aldridge has performed about 60 SI fusions—a method that surgically places three small titanium implants across the joint. The method immobilizes the joint and causes bone to grow and fuse over the following months. Described as a minimally invasive surgery, the procedure requires only a 1- to 2-inch incision and avoids disruption to the surrounding soft tissue. Some 11,000 of these procedures using the iFuse Implant System have been done around the world. The procedure began to see widespread use in the United States early this year. On the Peninsula, Aldridge and Dr. Jeff Moore with TPMG are doing the iFuse procedure at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital, along with Dr. Mark Kerner with The Spine Center of Hampton Roads in Portsmouth, Virginia. Several surgeons affiliated with Sentara are also performing the procedure in South Hampton Roads, according to Francesca. Aldridge, however, has done the most. On a recent Thursday, Aldridge was
prepped for surgery in an operating room at Mary Immaculate Hospital. On the table was 46-year-old Tina Patron, who was hoping to get relief from pain she had had for nine years—pretty much since her daughter was born. Aldridge was pretty sure that Patron’s SI problems stemmed from childbirth. The SI joint is designed to expand during childbirth. If it doesn’t go back in place correctly, it can cause pain that mimics sciatica, which runs through the buttocks and down the leg. Patron, of Yorktown, Virginia, described the pain as “just uncomfortable all the time.” She had dealt with it with heating pads, massages, physical therapy and steroid shots, but the pain always came back. She finally decided she couldn’t take the pain anymore and decided to pursue surgery. Aldridge spent about 20 minutes on Patron’s surgery, watching several X-ray screens positioned around the room as he worked to make sure he was in just the right place. He hammered in the implants after first making sure that he wasn’t near any nerves. “And we’re good,” he announced. Patients so far have been very happy with the procedure, Aldridge says. A week out of surgery, Patron reported being almost pain free—except for in the glute area—and able to walk without a walker. “I’m pretty happy I did this,” she says. “I’m already not feeling that shooting pain down my leg every day. I know each day it’s going to get better. And I know by the end, I should be pain free.”

the mediterranean diet has recently received a great deal of attention with respect to potential cardiovascular benefits. It is rich in vegetables, fruits, peas and beans (legumes) and grains. It also contains moderate amounts of chicken and fish. There is little red meat and most fat is unsaturated and comes from olive oil and nuts. It has moderate amounts of red wine (one drink a day for women; two for men). In combination with moderate exercise and not smoking, the Mediterranean diet offers a scientifically researched, affordable, balanced and health-promoting lifestyle choice. This diet is a pattern of food proportions, rather than a set list of particular products, ‘superfoods’ or recipes. As such, there are many possibilities to be creative using locally sourced and affordable produce, according to your taste. Recent studies have shown it has important benefits, including improvements in blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cholesterol, inflammation and overall cardiovascular risk. Following the diet has also been linked with a reduced risk of early death and has proved a successful strategy for healthy weight reduction—more specifically, protecting against type 2 diabetes. This diet is rich in fiber, slowing down digestion and preventing huge swings in blood sugar. preventing heart disease and strokes. This diet discourages refined breads, processed foods, red meat and hard liquor which have all been linked to heart disease and strokes. keeping you agile. The nutrients gained with this diet may reduce a senior’s risk of developing muscle weakness and other signs of frailty by about 70 percent. reducing risk of alzheimer’s and parkinson’s disease. Researchers speculate that this diet may improve cholesterol and blood sugar levels and overall blood vessel health—all factors that may reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. In a diet containing high levels of antioxidants that prevent cells from undergoing a damaging process called oxidative stress, the risk of Parkinson’s disease is practically cut in half. Increasing longevity. When there is a reduction in developing heart disease or cancer, as in the case when you follow this diet, there is a 20 percent reduced risk of death at any age.

Heather Snead of Williamsburg, Virginia, says her 2-yearold son enjoyed it, particularly the play kitchen area, and is looking forward to a return visit.

SIX your BUTCHER THINGs
wants you to
KNOW
❥ WRITTEN BY KIMBERLEY CUACHON HAUGH
i’ve made friends with my butcher, have you? mine is a 10-year ex-vegetarian turned butcher who owns The Whole Ox in The Plains, Virginia. Derek Luhowiak calls it “the neighborhood butcher in the middle of nowhere.” As I stand at his butcher block, he shows me the Ossaba Island hog’s head he is pickling to make head cheese. He tells me that the only way he would eat meat again was to do it the best way that he could hence the reason why he opened his shop two and a half years ago, and therefore the reason why everyone should have a butcher to rely on.

they’re not just a bunch of meatheads Many butchers are ex-chefs and are true gourmands. Using the entire animal and keeping their product fresh requires it. According to Luhowiak, his meats are refrigerated for three days, and then they move on . For instance, The Whole Ox makes stocks, mousses, terrines, pâtés, soups, pies, ground meats, charcuterie and sausages. Needless to say, your butcher has a world of knowledge on how to cook and how to eat, says Luhowiak.
they’re not expensive While you may believe that you’re getting a bargain at the big box store, remember that you’re probably buying a cut of meat pumped with sodium water to add weight and flavor. That’s where all that moisture comes from when you’re trying to get that perfect sear. Butchered meat keeps its natural flavor because it’s never frozen. Their meat is nothing but straight up flavor.

they’ll change your mind about lard Lard has such a bad connotation. But if it’s from your butcher it’s not hydrogenated, meaning that it will not outlive you. It’s also healthier than you think. Pure lard contains no trans-fat and its monounsaturated fat is oleic acid. That’s the same heart-healthy essential fatty acid found in olive oil and associated with decreasing LDLs, which can lower “bad” cholesterol. Non-hydrogenated lard is almost impossible to come by unless you go to your butcher who has already laboriously prepared it.
they can save you money Are you used to making osso bucco with veal shanks? Then ask your butcher if he has any beef shanks in today. You’ll spend half the price without sacrificing flavor. The same goes with skirt steak; it’s both economical and delicious. These are tips you can get from your butcher—if you know what you’re looking for or what your meal plans are. Keep an open mind about unconventional parts of the animal like pig ears; your butcher will have plenty of ideas on how to prepare them delectably.

they can turn cuts of meat into art Have you ever heard of a double boneless lamb loin chop rolled around tenderloin? These are the decadent cuts that your butcher can do for you. Imagine serving this at the dinner table, perfectly cut and trussed ready for roasting, or pan searing and then finishing in the oven.
they have a vested interest in quality Most butcher shops are independently owned. Therefore, their product is their calling card and for the most part their only advertisement. Ethical butchers know where their animals are coming from, so don’t be afraid to ask for a list of names.

CHAIN skipping the grocery store and buying direct from a farmer is now returning as a popular way to purchase fruits and vegetables, and even meat, eggs and dairy products. More people are buying food at farmers’ markets and even driving out to buy directly from farms. The Virginia Department of Agriculture says that farmers’ markets are the primary way for consumers to buy directly from farmers. “We’ve definitely seen an increase and I think it’s safe to call it dramatic. For example, in 2005, we had around 80 farmers’ markets in the state. Today, we have around 240,” says Elaine Lidholm, from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS). That’s a 180 percent increase in less than a decade. But customers are also driving out to the farms to make their purchases. Michael Drewry, of Drewry Farms in Wakefield, Virginia, says that he thinks his farm has seen a 50 percent increase in people buying directly. “Young parents with small children are deeply concerned about food health and safety. Young educated adults who are rejecting chemical dependent factory farming are coming to our farm asking

questions and supporting our mission,” he says. Health concerns appear to be a significant part of the increased traffic at farms and farm stands. Although research about the specific benefits of organic foods is ongoing, the lower residue of pesticides is an advantage. In response to increased awareness, Drewry now offers strawberries for picking, grown without using pesticides. “We had a huge increase in people coming to our ‘you pick’ strawberry patch this spring for pesticide-free berries. Especially since strawberries once again made the list of 12 most pesticideladen fruits,” he says. Drewry also uses non-genetically modified grain to supplement pasture-raised beef and pork, and says he’s seen an increased interest in people directly purchasing meat, too. A recent United States Department of Agriculture survey showed that while organic food is only about 4 percent of all groceries, more people want to purchase humanely raised meat and poultry. Additionally, food contamination scares in recent years also encourage people to buy closer to home. But there is a
the value of the farm experience VDACS has also seen a significant increase in the number of “agritourism” venues such as pick-your-own farms and the autumn festival events at pumpkin patches. “I believe the greater appeal for pick-your-own, or agritourism
venues, is the fun and novelty of gathering their own food and in spending the day on the farm,” Lidholm says. Many locations have additional fun, such as pony rides, corn mazes, fishing, feeding animals, greenhouses, gift shops and ice cream stands. The experience of a day on the farm may add to the cost of the picked produce, but it’s also part of the unique experience of farm life for guests, particularly children. “That on-farm experience is becoming more and more attractive each year as fewer people have access to a private farm. Twenty years ago, many families still had a grandparent, uncle or cousin who farmed. Today, only one percent of the population is actively engaged in production agriculture, so the on-farm experience is harder to come by,” says Lidholm. Drewry cautions people though, that a visit to a farm for a day is not reflective of the life of a farmer. “The romantic idea of county farming is far different from the reality of dealing with hogs, chickens and cattle as well as the struggles to keep mold from the berries without chemicals and the demands of consumers who don’t understand the farm isn’t a grocery store,” he says. One of the benefits of buying direct from a farmer though, is that you get to see where your food comes from, appreciate the hard work that went into it and support the farmer with your purchase. Plus, it’s delicious!

significant price premium on organically grown food, plus the cost of driving to different locations to pick up items. Despite the obstacles, people continually want to know where their food is coming from, and how it is being grown or raised. Jenn Haynes, from James City County, visits several locations to pick fruit and buy produce. “I want to know where my food comes from, and I want to have a relationship with the people. Labels are not as good as looking someone in the eye who grew it,” she says. Some of the farms are out of the way—including New Kent County, Mathews County and Surry County. Haynes enjoys hand-picking the fruit that she uses to make jams, and believes the quality is much better. “The blueberries are so good, I’ll drive that far,” Haynes says. It’s not always easy to return to the process of visiting different places for different foods, driving miles out of the way for just one type of item, but the experience may be part of the fun.
QUESTIONS TO ASK your
FARMER
BEWARE THE BANANA!
If you find food that is typically not grown in our region being sold by a farmer, show some healthy skepticism about its origins.
1. What’s this best for? Share your plans and they’ll be able to recommend the best cucumbers for pickling, the best fruits for jams and the best veggies for your recipe. 2. What sort of growing methods do you use? While certified organic may be ideal, many farms use natural practices without the certification. There’s also a difference between types of pesticides and whether they spray the plant or the fruit. 3. Is this grown on your farm? Some farm stands offer products from other locations, such as peaches from further South or honey from another grower. 4. What is in season now and what will be available soon? Educate yourself about what fruits and vegetables are available in your area and when. 5. Where else do you sell your products? Find out if they have a regular stand at the farmers market, if they offer a CSA (community supported agriculture) subscription or if they supply a local restaurant.

it’s september, summer is drawing to a close and flavors are on the cusp of seasonal evolution. I had a quick pow-wow with Angela Steil, the world’s youngest certified Cicerone, and asked her to review some fall style beers. She detailed a handful of season-appropriate beers to look for and how to pair them with other seasonal fare.
what seasonal beer styles should we look for this fall?
what fall flavors would these styles pair well with? • Pumpkin beers: Dessert. Not pumpkin pie necessarily, but dairy forward desserts. Think Tiramisu or Creme Brûlée. • Oktoberfest beers: Preparations of chicken and seafood that have light-to-mild character. • American Brown Ales: Beef Stroganoff and a mushroom swiss burger - medium heartiness and earthy characters in terms of food. • Belgian Dubbels: Pairs with just about any hearty, autumnal entree. This one you can get very creative with.
SNIP-SNIP! CUT ALONG THE LINE TO KEEP THIS RECIPE.
Pumpkin beers and Oktoberfest style beers are very traditional during this season, and they are incredibly delicious. I personally tend to lean more towards drinking American Brown Ales and Belgian Dubbels. All of these beers, to me, epitomize the atmosphere of the season, which is crisp, cool and festive. These brews have a ‘warming’ element to them that is not quite as heavy as, say, an imperial stout, but still add a robust nature to the season as a whole.

Not Your Parents’ Sch getting kids to eat what’s on their plate is an everyday battle for many parents. Now, the federal government is joining the fight by implementing new school lunch requirements in an effort to help kids eat healthier. Beginning this school year, school cafeterias participating in the federal school lunch program will be required to serve “whole-grain rich” breads and pastas, meaning those items contain at least 50 percent whole grain meal and/or flour. School lunches will also have to adhere to new sodium restrictions (1,230 mg per meal for grades K-5, 1,360 mg for grades 6-8, and 1,420 mg for grades 9-12), and there are new nutrition guidelines for snacks sold during the school day. These are the latest changes to be rolled

out as part of the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 , administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The legislation enabled the USDA to make major reforms to what foods could be served in school cafeterias, with the goal of reducing childhood obesity. Some school districts are ahead of the changes because they began adding whole grains to their menus years ago. In general, the switch from white to wheat bread has not been a hit with students. “[Students] are not sold on that brown bread at all,” says Julia Bryant, director of food and nutrition services with Hampton City Schools. “We found that out during focus groups and by looking in the trash can.” Hampton now uses lighter wheat flour.
then:
“We are always cognizant of what that bread is going to look like in terms of color,” Bryant says. The Hampton, Norfolk and Williamsburg-James City County school districts have already taken steps to lower sodium levels in their lunches and are on track to meet this year’s new requirement. “The [food] industry has done a great job reformulating products to meet our nutritional guidelines,” says Helen Phillips, Norfolk’s senior director of school nutrition. But two future reductions, scheduled in 2017 and 2022, are worrying food service managers. The proposed 2017 levels cut sodium levels to just 935 mg for K-5 students, with small increases for older students. 2022’s

changes are even lower, at a meager 640mg for K-5 students. Phillips believes those levels will be readjusted because of the difficulty of meeting them. The new Smart Snacks in School requirements could have a major financial impact on sales from cafeteria a la carte items, vending machines and school fundraisers. All snacks sold during the school day have to meet new calorie, sodium, fat and sugar limits. That means school clubs can no longer sell candy bars between classes, and students will be limited to healthier choices, such as baked chips and whole-grain cookies. Students may not embrace the changes, but the new standards are intended to help reduce America’s childhood obesity epidemic.
SALAD BARS ARE COMMONPLACE NOW IN SCHOOL CAFETERIAS
“I think the changes we are making are a good thing,” says Jane Haley, supervisor of child nutrition services with Williamsburg-James City County Schools. “The changes we are making now should give the students a good foundation for their future choices. The school breakfast and lunch programs provide meals that demonstrate good examples of healthy choices students can make in their daily food selections. Hopefully these changes will be ones that the students practice well into their future.”
What’s on the menu? Below is a sample lunch menu from Williamsburg-James City County Schools to give parents and students a flavor of what to expect from their school cafeterias this fall. ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS Choose one: spaghetti with meat sauce; honey mustard chicken wrap; yogurt/cheese stick/graham cracker combo; or spinach strawberry chicken salad Choose two: steamed broccoli and fresh salad Choose one: assorted fruits/fruit juices MIDDLE SCHOOLS Choose one: cheese quesadilla with salsa and Spanish rice; southwest grilled chicken BBQ sandwich with Spanish rice; yogurt and goldfish/cheese sandwich combo; fajita chicken taco salad; or Domino’s pizza Choose two: carrots and celery with fat-free dip and baked beans Choose one: assorted fruits/fruit juices HIGH SCHOOLS Choose one: Philly cheese steak sub; oven-fried or roasted chicken with whole-grain roll; salad bar; available daily sandwiches; pizza Choose two: mashed potatoes with gravy and sweet green peas Choose two: assorted fruits/fruit juices

WITH THE STANDING BOW SERIES, RELEASE THE RIBS AND PELVIS TO GET MORE OXYGEN INTO EACH STRETCH:
STRETCH THE FRONT OF THE BODY
A Using the same side of your body, step one leg back while lengthening the arm in front. Reach your foot and fingertips in equal but opposite directions while inhaling as long as possible. B Keep inhaling and continue the arc into an overhead side bend. C Swivel your elbow out behind you and around to further expand the ribcage and chest. Key: Back should not arch, pelvis should not tilt. This is not a back bend.
HANGING FORWARD BEND: A Inhale fully as you raise your arms out to your sides and overhead. Feel the air flow in through your nose while allowing your belly and ribcage to inflate. B Exhale as you fold forward and hang. Take another full breath while hanging feeling your belly expand toward your thighs. Exhale to return to standing position and repeat. Key: Breathe in s-l-o-w-l-y while relaxing the belly and keep exhaling evenly and fully.

STRETCH THE BACK OF THE BODY WITH THE FIGURE 4 STRETCH, RELEASE THE HIPS AND INNER THIGHS:
STRETCH THE CENTER OF THE BODY
A Seated or standing, cross one ankle over the other knee. Inhale fully into your belly and exhale slowly as you bend forward. Keep your back lengthened as you reach out diagonally, first toward the right and then toward the left. B Draw your top knee towards your opposite shoulder as you exhale. C Press your top knee away from you to stretch the inner thigh. Remember to breathe deeply and exhale fully.
MIND/BODY BREATHING Tension created from holding your breath is the greatest enemy of stretching. The lack of oxygen causes the brain to send stress signals to the muscles. Enjoy deeper stretches with deep breathing borrowed from mind/body workouts like Pilates and yoga. Deep, continuous breathing tells your muscles to release and makes stretching more effective. HOW TO BREATH:
NASAL (AWARENESS) BREATHING:
Inhaling slowly though the nose gives the brain a direct hit of oxygen and sets off a cascade of feel-good hormones. Using your index finger, close your right nostril and inhale slowly. Pause your breath as you close off the left nostril. Allow the air to leave the right nostril. Try to feel the sensation of the air as your nostril gently flares. Cycle your breathing this way several times then switch sides. Finish by trying to feel the cycling of your breathing without holding either nostril shut.
BELLY VS. CHEST:
Lie on your back with one hand on your chest and one on your belly noting which hand rises first. If only your top hand rises, you are a shallow breather and will struggle with releasing into a stretch. Practice inhaling until your belly hand naturally rises first.

cycling 'Super bowl' headed to richmond UCI ROAD WORLD CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS CREATING EXCITEMENT

{
richmond, virginia, hosts the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Road World Cycling Championships (Worlds) from September 19-27, 2015. It’s the second time the United States will hold the event—the first in 28 years. Cyclists from around the globe will compete in 12 elite and junior races during the nine-day event. “It is a rare opportunity for the athletes to compete for their country, just as they do during the Olympic games,” says Paul Shanks, director of communications and digital marketing for Richmond 2015, Inc. “Athletes compete in three different disciplines including the traditional Road Race, the Individual Time Trial and the recently introduced Team Time Trial. World champions are crowned in each discipline.” MORE THAN 1,500 CYCLISTS FROM 75 NATIONS ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE, WITH 450,000 LOCAL SPECTATORS EXPECTED TO TURN OUT AND 300 MILLION PEOPLE WATCHING GLOBALLY.
“In cycling there is no stadium,” says Shanks. “The roads become the stadium, and the roads chosen in Richmond to be a part of the courses for Worlds display the beautiful, historic city of Richmond. It truly is going to make a great venue for these world class cyclists to compete for a world championship.” Eric Schofield, an avid cyclist who started competing in road cycling competitions three years ago, directs the Bon Secours Elite Cycling Team and is one of many residents looking forward to Worlds. “I am excited to see the world’s best cyclists compete in Richmond and the reaction to the event from non-cyclists,” Schofield says. “These athletes are capable of amazing things on a bicycle. My guess is that even non-cyclists will appreciate this sport at its highest
level and the event will increase awareness and possibly tolerance to cyclists in the area. I have not seen an event of this magnitude in person and I am sure that it will be even more unbelievable than I envision it in my mind. I can’t wait.” Earlier this month, Virginia Commonwealth University senior Chris Jones, a member of the university’s cycling club, as well as the Bon Secours team, won the Division I Individual Time Trial in the Collegiate Road Cycling National Championships, riding on a course similar to the one that will be used in next year’s cycling championships. “It was awesome,” he says. “It was really, really hard; very challenging. That should make the actual race very interesting.” Jones likened next year’s race to “asking a football fan if he is going to see the Super Bowl.” “I will definitely be there,” he says. “It will be like the Tour de France coming to Richmond. It is going to be huge.” Richmond City Mayor Dwight C. Jones is equally thrilled and feels the race aligns with his Healthy Richmond Campaign. “Increased pedestrian activity via bicycling and trails is a central focus of my Healthy Richmond Campaign,” the mayor says. “Not only is the UCI World Road Cycling Championships a wonderful opportunity for Richmond to shine globally, but the Championships will naturally engage the public around an event that reflects healthy and active lifestyles. An event like this on such a large scale can have a lasting impact on young and old. I believe the energy that Richmond is about to experience as a result of this event will have multiple residual outcomes.”

Falling For It
1 IN 3 SENIORS FALL. TRY THESE TIPS TO PREVENT IT. ❥ WRITTEN BY TERESA BERGEN
most older adults know somebody who’s had serious consequences from a fall, whether an injury, a long stay in a rehab facility or even death. About one in three adults over age 65 fall every year. Results can include head trauma, hip fractures and loss of independence. Even those who escape serious injury may develop an increased fear of falling, resulting in a more restricted and compromised lifestyle. The good news is you can do many things to decrease your chances of falling and up the odds of a long, healthy and adventurous life.
Vision and Med Check
38 SEPTEMBER 2014 | THEHEALTHJOURNALS.COM
As people age, vision often suffers. And diminished vision can cause balance problems. An annual eye checkup can help catch changes before they trip you up. Medications can also affect your balance. Both over-the-counter and prescription meds may have side effects, like drowsiness or dizziness, that make you more prone to falling. Read labels and ask your pharmacist.
Take a Fall Prevention Seminar Many senior centers and homecare agencies offer free fall prevention seminars. Sometimes organizations team up to help seniors and advance ongoing research. See if such an opportunity exists in your area to assess your fall risk and get some personalized tips to decrease your chance of fall-related injuries.
Exercise Exercising regularly can significantly improve your balance. Activities that focus on balance, such as tai chi and yoga, are especially beneficial. Do movements that simulate losing your balance and then recovering. It is the skill you’ll need—recovering your balance instead of falling. Strengthening your leg muscles can also reduce fall risk, especially your quadriceps and the plantarflexors and dorsiflexors that move your ankles. Multi-component training is key, according to the American Council on Exercise. For example, you could combine physical and cognitive training by practicing heel to toe walking while counting backwards from 100. Or you could combine two physical tasks, such as standing on one leg while tossing a lightweight ball from hand to hand. For best results, do your balance exercises before your resistance or flexibility exercises. When your muscles are tired, balancing is even more difficult.
Assess Your Home People get accustomed to the way their homes are arranged and may not think to adapt their surroundings to age-related changes. But small fixes can make a big difference. Houses are often full of tripping hazards. Here are a few of the most common problems and solutions: || Toe catching on a throw rug? You might be safer without rugs, or by adding a non-slip backing. || Move furniture back to give you more space to safely navigate rooms. || Beware of cords and wires. Coil them or tape them to the wall to avoid tripping. || Hire an electrician to install more outlets and thus improve your cord management. || Grab bars make toilets and showers much easier to use safely. || Banisters on stairways should be sturdy. || Add strips of colored tape to stairs to help you see where each stair ends.

Because emergencies aren’t about waiting
Heading to the Emergency Department means you need medical treatment. That’s why we work hard to make sure you will be seen as quickly as possible.
•
Advanced technology and an electronic medical record assist our staff in initiating diagnostic testing quickly.
• • •
Help us to help you by carrying your medication list with you on your visit. RDHW is staffed by Board-Certified Emergency Physicians 24/7/365. Many patients can alert us that they are headed our way by using InQuicker, an online program that works similarly to “call ahead seating” at a restaurant. Go to Riversideonline.com.
You can’t always avoid accidents and illness. But you can avoid long waits for emergency treatment. Count on Riverside for care that is effective, efficient and fast.

Sheila Tapp, M.D. A primary care physician should be an advocate for patients and able to hear what they are not always saying with
New Name. Same words. I like forming relationships with my patients and getting to know them over
time. I joined Riverside because they share my belief that patients should always come first and be treated like family members. It’s very rewarding for me to hear patients say they feel comfortable
