Q: How can I get a beautiful mane and tail on my horse? --Mike L. via Facebook A: There is no easy answer to this one, Mike. A beautiful long mane and tail is
usually the reflection of excellent husbandry, genetics and sheer dedication. Barring any set backs, it takes approximately 3-5 years for a mature horse’s tail to grow from the end of the tail dock to the ground. Begin by giving your horse the best opportunity to develop a quality mane and tail by feeding premium feedstuffs. Quality does not equal quantity and a fat horse can be nutritionally deficient. Sometimes it can be too much of a good thing. For example, too much Selenium in the diet can create dry, brittle mane and tail hair as well as poor hoof quality. This can sometimes happen with “bullet” or random supplementation top-dressed over manufactured feeds. Best to work with a PhD in Equine Nutrition or your Feed Manufacturer to help develop a ration best suited for your horse to avoid these problems. Good grooming is key. Even if you are blanketing, your horse needs to be groomed head to toe at least twice per week. However, you want to avoid brushing or combing your horse’s mane and tail, especially when it’s dirty or wet. Don’t forget to keep udders and sheaths clean--we do ours monthly in the winter and more often during show season. Continued or excessive itching might indicate an underlying health problem that you might want to discuss with your Veterinarian. If the tail is kept loose or if the horse is a mare, wash the tail weekly with a mild shampoo and rinse thoroughly at the roots, under the tail dock and between the hind legs. Unless your barn is heated, washing the mane during the colder months will be more difficult. Mane hair tends to be more fragile. Use moisturizers and conditioners created for horses. Cover the tail hair from the dock down by keeping it loosely braided and in a tail bag. Manes can be protected under loose fitting, all-season neck covers made of lycra. As the weather warms, keep your horse out of the sun which will bleach existing mane and tail hair. Consider purchasing a quality, light weight fly sheet with neck cover rather than fly sprays to keep tail swishing to a minimum.

Something To Whinny About “No Whips, No Spurs!” Fourteen- year-old MicKala Watterson from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania is a young entrepreneur and the driving force behind the What Ever Color Company, which features 3 product lines that focus on education and the relationships between horses and humans. MicKala’s philosophy is simple: “no whips, no spurs, and you’ll need no cures”. The products she develops and markets are all intended to teach us life lessons and make us better, more compassionate horse owners. Micki Watterson, MicKala’s mother, has researched horse diseases since the early 1990’s. She has spent years trying to find new cures for equine illness and fatal diagnoses. She labeled her product line the Educated Equines series because the horses themselves teach a true story of survival. In 1993, Micki, her father Michael D. LaBate and Dr. Robert Maro, DVM of Lowelville, Ohio, produced a video called Horses Don’t Lie, the culmination of years of research on hopeless equine cases in which gravely ill horses survived despite all odds and despite what doctors and other horse professionals treating them advised. Micki was well on her way to developing new and innovative techniques and strategies to manage equine disease. Personal tragedy struck in 2003; Micki became very ill with a rare terminal cancer and became unable to work. After years of tireless work trying to help horses overcome hopeless diagnoses, Micki had to find it within herself to overcome her own poor prognosis. MicKala, then just 6 years old, stepped up to help her mother earn money by producing and marketing their helpful equine products. MicKala revamped their product line and took the initiative to improve their offering again in 2004 and expanded their products to include Question and Answer Educated Equine T-shirts, the E-story from our Kids Teaching Adult Series and Color It, Write it Clothes. Over the years, Micki has fought and overcome poor health and personal tragedy and she is proud of her daughter and the products they now offer. Although every day is a challenge for Micki, she is looking into the future and has hope for a healthy life and a bright future for her daughter. MicKala and her mother still hope to encourage and educate horse owners in the art of gentle horsemanship and to look beyond modern veterinary advice to find hope for every horse. Over the years the Watterson’s have taken “hopeless” cases and shown that with love, compassion, and some ingenuity horses and people can overcome grave illness despite professional opinions and advice. Take a moment to visit their website at HYPERLINK “http://whatevercolor.com/” \t “_blank” whatevercolor.com or their e-bay store at HYPERLINK “http://stores. ebay.com/What-Ever-Color-Company” http://stores.ebay.com/WhatEver-Color-Company. “The products are unique and each comes with a story behind it,” says MicKala. When she’s not riding and spending time with her horses, MicKala attends high school in the Beaver Falls area and hopes to attend Slippery Rock University as a Music Education major and minor in veterinary science or marine biology. She would like to follow her passion for teaching by becoming an educator after college. MicKala’s advice for up-and-coming entrepreneurs? “Follow what you like, sometimes things happen, out of the blue, follow your dreams.”
