Buffalo gnats or black flies also known as “no-see-ums” are seasonal in the late spring-early summer months, found primarily in humid regions in proximity to ponds and streams. The female gnat requires blood to reproduce and is tenacious in her quest to find it. While just a nuisance for some of us, these insects should be taken seriously. Buffalo gnats can spread disease and parasites to humans and livestock. Make sure that horses and pets are up to date with vaccine against encephalitis which can be spread by black flies. Severe infestations can result in enough blood loss to create anemia and, in humans, this gnat can be a carrier of a condition called River Blindness. Horses with allergies to the bite of this gnat experience intense skin reactions often scratching until their tail and under belly areas are raw. Horses with these allergies require veterinary intervention and should be housed inside with extra protection until the gnat’s breeding season is over. In the war against bugs we have 2 basic choices: Chemical repellents or Physical Barrier-type products. The “best” choice is probably some combination of the two. Barrier protection includes lightweight fly sheets made from mosquito mesh, fly masks that cover the ears and leg wraps made from breathable mesh materials. Barrier protection is the most reliable, safest and longest lasting for your horse. For coverage while riding there are quarter sheets, leg covers, fly masks or fly bonnets available. For those horses sensitive to even the sound of bugs buzzing about their face and ears, the additional use of ear plugs may help. Chemical repellents are often expensive and short lived. I asked Tami Johnson, Trail Master and Manager at Hickory Creek Wilderness Ranch, what her favorite insect repellent is. “Some people use roll on wipe,” said Tami. “I use a homemade remedy of cheap fly spray, a 16 oz. Bottle of [Avon’s] Skin So Soft, a 1/2 cup of vinegar and a 1/4 cup of Citronella.” In addition to fly sprays made just for livestock, consider lesstoxic human products like Cutter or Off with DEET which can also be effective against a broad range of flying insects and ticks. Although I have not tried them yet, the sunscreen products from Banana Boat--specifically their Sport SPF 50 in the orange container-- are supposed to work very well against biting gnats with an added bonus of sun protection.

Something to Whinny About

“Diagonals – NOT just for English Riders”

Posting the trot is a great way to make the ride more comfortable if you are riding a working or extended trot. It’s most common for English riders to post, but posting is also beneficial to Western riders in many cases, as well. If you ride English, there’s a good chance that you know how to post on what is considered the ‘correct’ diagonal… if you ride Western, maybe you know how and maybe you don’t. Regardless of whether or not you know HOW, it’s just as important to understand WHY. “Rise and fall with the shoulder on the wall,” many of us English riders are taught when we are learning to post the trot. If you were to ask why, many instructors would give answers like, “Because then the judge will know that you know your diagonals” or “Because that’s the way that it’s done.” A better answer that you might hear is ‘It helps your horse to balance correctly, especially around turns.” But even more than that, if you are preparing for a canter departure, posting with the correct diagonal will help your horse to take the correct lead…. Let me explain more: When the horse trots, he is operating off of two diagonally coordinated legs. In rhythm, these legs make the “one-two” beat of the trot to complete a stride. To be on the ‘correct diagonal’ a rider would rise and fall in time with the diagonalized pair of inside hind and outside front feet (inside and outside referring to the legs in terms of riding on a circle). When the horse canters, his footfall only changes slightly, but it makes a big difference in his gait. A complete stride sequence for the canter look something like this: (1) outside hind foot, (2) diagonally coordinated inside hind with outside front, (3) inside front. Notice the fact that in both the canter and trot, there is a diagonal pair of legs that operate together. When we are trotting, the correct diagonal legs to post with are also the diagonal legs that we see at the canter on the correct lead. There is where the secret to WHY is found. When the horse balances underneath us and we are posting the trot in time with the inside hind and outside front legs, the horse will be naturally inclined to take the correct lead because the diagonal we are working with at the trot remains the diagonal pair at the canter. This is also the reason that posting immediately in your canter to trot transition will land you on the correct diagonal (if you were on the correct lead to begin with)… those feet are still working together underneath you. So if you want to help your horse to make seamless trot to canter departures and ensure that you are on the correct lead, it’s a good idea to not only understand how to post on the correct diagonal, but also WHY. I hope this helps you understand things on a little deeper level.
