Basic Finish
Learning to paint furniture that you love is made easier than ever with Amulent Decor Paint! Amulent's unique formulation allows it to have excellent flow and leveling properties, strength, durability and workability. Essentially, you can easily achieve a beautiful finish - no experience required! 01
B A SIC PR EP
02
SHELL AC
Nothing too much, just lightly buff any glossy surfaces and give it a good cleaning. The smoother your surface is to begin with, the better your overall finish will be. So, it may be worth it to you to spend some time on this step, but it's certainly not necessary for the paint to bond. While you don't need to prime, you should consider using a clear shellac at certain times. What are those times? Simply, if your base wood has any reddish tones in it (cherry, mahogany, etc...) you're going to want to use 2-3 coats of clear shellac before painting. It keeps those pesky stains (from the tannins) from bleeding back through your paint and ruining your finish!
03
PA INT
04
BUFF
Now you can get started! Always attempt to use just enough paint on the brush that it doesn't look "goopy" on your surface. Less is more! Aim for 2 coats. This is optional, but to get an extra gorgeous finish, buff the completely dried surface lightly with a fine grit sandpaper.
Follow these simple guidelines to achieve the beautiful (and stress-free) finish you want!

ew to painting? Here are some key tips to help get you started and make sure you have a long-lasting piece!
The Chippy Barn's paint called Amulent Decor Paint, is a great furniture paint for beginners as it goes on easily and smoothly with minimum prep required. The self-leveling properties in the paint allow it to even out without the appearance of too many brush strokes - so you don’t have to worry about painting it perfectly! It takes care of the mistakes for you!
COLOUR CHOICE
Have fun picking a colour that speaks to you! Don’t be afraid to go bold - statement pieces are always fun and great conversation starters! If you don’t like the colour - you can always paint over it. That’s the beauty of paint - you can paint over it easily! PREPPING
It’s always great to give your piece a good prep. This entails cleaning it as thoroughly as possible - old pieces can get build up of grim and dirt over the years so you want to

make sure it is cleaned off so the paint can adhere properly - diluted warm water with vinegar is a non-toxic solution! The Chippy Barn's paint, Amulent, really sticks to most surfaces - but it’s always safe to give the piece a good scuff with sandpaper - either between 150 or 220 grit. PAINTING
Amulent is so simple to use that this part is a breeze! I recommend using thin coats to avoid clumping - but Amulent self-levels, so it makes it really easy to get nice, clean lines with minimal brush strokes! Usually it will take two coats! TOPCOAT
Adding a top coat is a great idea for maximum durability of your piece. Picking a top coat really depends on the volume of

traffic your piece will get. If it’s going to be in a highly used area - like a bathroom/kitchen/ outdoors etc - I recommend using UltraTough Top Coat. For less trafficked areas wax is a great choice! ULTR A TOUGH TOP COAT
This is great for pieces that are used in high traffic areas such as kitchens, bathrooms or the outdoors. This will really protect your piece from scratches, water resistance and regular cleans. Use a sponge or a brush to apply light coats. One or two coats will often do the trick! WA XED FINISH
The Chippy Barn has some amazing scents that will make your piece smell wonderful and remove some of the musty smells commonly found in older pieces!
SPECIALT Y WA X
Use your lint free cloth to rub in a light layer of wax. Feel free to do this every 6 months to a year to keep it looking fresh! MAHOGANY STAIN WA X
Refreshing legs and small areas of wood: if you are looking to refresh legs or small areas on your piece but wanting to keep the natural wood look - mahogany stain wax is a great way to update tired wood! Just give the area a scuff with 150 grit sandpaper and using a chip brush apply the stain wax! Watch as the tired wood gets brought back to life with a beautiful mahogany tint! HARDWARE
Changing or updating the hardware can really be a great way to improve the appearance to the piece. Hardware can also be fairly pricey - but a good trick to updating hardware is to simply change the colour on the existing piece! The Chippy Barn has some great metallic gilding waxes that you can use to paint onto the hardware to give it new charm! All you have to do is take a small artist brush to apply. Have Fun! Painting is really easy and relaxing! Don’t be afraid to just dive in a try painting a piece! I warn you though! It is highly addictive!

Distressed Finish Adding a touch of distressing can instantly give your furniture a warm and inviting feel - like it's been in your home from the beginning.
Want to know why distressing is so popular? Other than being trendy, it allows you to take a piece of tired furniture in average condition and bring out its timeworn character. And it's super simple! Whether you're creating a slightly distressed look or you plan on completely going at it with the sanding block, The Chippy Barn's Amulent Decor Paint sands down smoothly and easily without chipping or peeling. Just use a sandpaper you like and distress where you like. You can even distress with a damp rag while the paint is barely dry, to achieve a ultrasmooth look. Some think that it looks best when distressing occurs where it naturally would - the corners, edges, etc... Or you can distress wherever you like, it's up to you!

Lemonade MAKING with Keegan Robinson of
LEMON DROPS R ECL A IMED
We chatted with Keegan where she spilled all the details about how she started her sucessful creative business, how the refinishing community has impacted her and why you should get started today! We've long been a fan of your work. Can you tell us how you got started refinishing furniture? I can't believe it but Lemon Drops Reclaimed will be four years old this August. I first tried my hand at refinishing while I was on maternity leave with my first child. I wanted a creative outlet as well as something that I could work on from home. I started with a few pieces for myself and slowly worked up the courage to try listing some pieces for sale. Luckily, those pieces sold fairly quickly and I was hooked. My business is now comprised mainly of custom work, but I'm trying to make time to do pieces that I've chosen as well. It's my therapy. Well, after four years I'm sure you've probably got a pretty good feel for the work you do... can you think of something specifically you know has helped set your business up for success?

I'd easily say joining forces with fellow refinishers. I've been very fortunate to have made solid connections with some very talented women in the refinishing community. I have a group of ladies who I communicate with regularly. We bounce design ideas off of one another, talk pricing, share tips and tricks etc. We've developed a really special camaraderie. Many of the tricks I've learned about refinishing have come from chatting with others in the business. Other women in the refinishing community, especially, have always been such a great source of fun and camaraderie! Speaking of women, what would you tell the woman reading this that wants to get started professionally? Take the plunge! It's so rewarding to pour your heart and soul into something that you love, and if you can make money doing that, then why not?! Start with some smaller, low investment pieces and work your way to
larger, more complex pieces. Oh, and reach out to those that inspire you. Ask questions. The refinishing community is full of kind people who are willing to share their knowledge. Switching gears a little, whether you're looking to paint your first piece for your own home, or you're already refinishing in the professional sphere, what are ways that you get inspired? I find inspiration from different places, but my main sources are Pinterest, home decor magazines/Instagram accounts and of course other refinishers. I do a lot of scrolling. What would you tell the person just looking to update a piece or two of their home furniture for the first time, but might be a little nervous to take the plunge? Most of the furniture paints on the market now are very beginner friendly. Do a little research about proper prep and then just go for it! If you make a mistake, sand it back and start again!

Let's face it. Stained Wood is never going out of style. And that's a great thing - because as much as we love paint, we love a gorgeous stained wood as well. But, staining can be a pain. Should you strip the wood? Or sand it down? Should you condition the wood? Or go for it and hope for the best? Our Mahogany Stain Wax couldn't make it easier. Just buff into a previously stained finish for a refresh with the protection of a waxed finish (um, time saver!), or lightly sand and buff into the surface.
