A concept book about the industrial heritage of my hometown Grimsby. Developing ideas from the Grimsby fishing heritage centre, a museum demonstrating the past life of the working fishermen. This research has influenced my designs and the production of my final garment.

An observation of the fishermen’s work wear, drawn from a statue in the memory of the men who never came home.
4
Focusing on the 1950’s era as this was when the fishing industry was most popular. Looking at photos of my ancestors to see what they would wear for work and the job role the women would take on whilst the men were away at sea.

Taking structured shapes into consideration, looking at the details of the trawler men’s suits and the collage of fish.

This research stimulated my idea of fabric and pattern. I looked at the fishermen’s tartan scarf with the fray feature which lead me to create my denim samples, experimenting different ways of fraying fabric. This repetitive pattern gave me the indication of choosing my polka dot denim material in my final garment.

For my photography I decided to go to the urban, citified areas to get a street style feel to my images. This creates more of an edgy look in theme with the outfit.

Paige Spence Concept Generation DE1135 For my ‘Sense of Place’ I have absorbed my surroundings and took an interest into the artistic graffiti. I was drawn to the colour and silhouette, the colours reminded me of sportswear. From this I produced a sports luxe/swimwear collection. I decided to design swimwear because I thought my print developments would be more adventurous on a swimwear garment.
ResearchI drew from observation for my research to get the idea of silhouette for my designs. I took some photos of graffiti and made a collage from this I experimented using different colour and print techniques.
TypographyUsing my key words I came up with my own typography in the style of graffiti displayed in Newcastle, this influenced my designs in terms colour.
Prints and Colour storyBelow are my finalised prints and the colour story. I had to narrow down my prints into a theme which I thought would work best.
