A few notes from Annie about the Luminosity sets ... First of all, I want to thank you for your support of Paint the Moon and for your purchase of the Luminosity The Essence and/or The Artisan action sets. These sets have been in the creation process for almost a year and went through extensive testing for another four-months while being used in day-to-day workflows among professional photographers with varying styles of processing.

The Luminosity sets were designed to compliment each other and can be used with one another seamlessly. The actions in these two sets

are unique in that they stack on top of one another without ever interfering with the Luminosity actions you’ve previously run. The Artisan set also include the amazing Blender actions, which allow you to see at a quick glance each of the different actions in the Toppings category, as well as the fabulous creative opportunity to mix and match to create your own unique look and therefore, keep true to your own style.

These sets are designed to let you create YOUR own unique style,

not to produce the same look over and over for every user.

When working with the actions from Artisan, keep in mind that if you are stacking more than a couple of the “toppings” (your color toning,

matte colors, color pops, etc.) together that you’ll likely want to drop the opacity down a bit on each of them. Also, remember that Paint the Moon actions are completely customizable so that the user can tweak individual layers within the action’s group in order to get just the right results for your particular image and sense of style.

For color toning, matte or haze actions, I recommend sometimes painting the action off the subject. This isn’t always necessary or desired, but

sometimes when the matte finish or perhaps a blur action is very strong, you’ll want to maintain the details of your subject’s face by simply painting with black on the layer mask of that action.

When adding unique, color toned looks to your images think about using the Paint On Artisan Blender in order to paint dashes of color here and there on the background of an image using a very large, soft brush.

You may notice many of the edits in the recipe portion of this guide will use multiple Artisan toning actions. This is usually done at very low opacities and often the toning action will be painted here and there on the background only as shown below. See what I did in the example below ... in the after, all I did was paint on La La Love, Earthen Ruby and Rich Deep Matte around the background here and there.

Luminosity: The Essence contains 52 actions designed to

create a clean processed image with your base workflow all in one powerhouse actions for both color and black and white, beautiful finishing touches and indispensable tools for essential corrections and unique added style.

Fresh Start Actions At the beginning of The Essence you will find your Fresh Start category of actions. These are a way to begin your edit if you need to do an adjustment to exposure or color ... everything from temperature fixers to brush on color cast removers and other selective adjustments. From there select your Base Color or BW Workflow action(s).

Color Workflow Bases You’ll discover the Color Workflow Base actions contain everything from the action Luminous, which adds light and depth while bringing out vivid clean color, to the action Organic, which leaves your images with a beautiful matte finish, full of color with an earthy appeal.

Black and White Workflow Bases You will also find the gorgeous and diverse Black and White Workflow Base actions ... Gossamer, Full of Soul, Lavish and Audrey. From a dramatic and bold black and white to a matte, nostalgic classic film look.

Finishing Touch Actions

Luminosity: The Artisan contains 53 actions designed to take

your image to the next level with a wide variety of artistic actions and finishes. Rich color shifts and pops ... beautiful, deep rich matte looks ... colorful and pastel hazy looks ... vintage film looks ... so many possibilities. These are created to be used on an image that has been clean processed (with either The Essence action set, your own basic workflow or just a perfect straight out of camera).

Toppings for Your Base Within the “Toppings for your base” category you’ll find the heart of The Artisan set. You’ll find color shifts and toning actions; the deep, rich matte look that is full of color and so popular right now; soft pastel actions with delicate hazes; rich and vibrant color pops and styles that are reminiscent of film photography.

Artisan Blenders for Toppings Within the Toppings for Your Base category you will find the most useful and powerful of all The Blender actions that will run the heart of the Artisan actions in one swoop, leaving you with 34 gorgeous actions all stacked together and ready for you to turn on each one to quickly see the results and even better, turn on a couple here and there and adjust the opacity as needed. For those who enjoy using toning actions just here and there, especially popular to do with backgrounds, you can run the The Artisan Paint On Blender and simply paint on each action wherever you want a dab of added color, toning, matte, etc.

Next you will find the Finishing Touches for The Essence set. Fabulous and clever tools to do everything from add back some depth and oomph to the On the Spot tools (On the Spot Crisp, Angel Soft and Punch) for selective adjustments just where needed. Enhance the details and add clarity as needed and paint a lovely warm vignette that looks natural and pretty.

Also, in The Essence you will find the Softness and Blur category. Just the right touch to add some velvety softness with rich depth or a soft, whisper of an overlay. Be sure to paint back your subject with black on the layer mask so it doesn’t affect the details of your subject’s face or other areas you want ultimate crispness.

Create a myriad of beautiful, rich matte finishes, light and airy haze finishes, a nostalgic and delicious film look or a bright, clean pop of color. If you’ve added actions that have perhaps made the image too matte/hazy or bright, bring some depth back with the Matte and Haze Reducer action.

Workflow Tools

Finishing Touches

Lastly, The Workflow Tools in Essence are handy little helper actions with everything from a perfect sharpening for print to a custom size web re-sizing and sharpening action to noise reduction and more.

Includes creative and unique finishers such as a paint on soft and deep edges, a gorgeous and earthen ruby edge and creamy skin glows that brush on. You’ll also find some corrective actions that can help tone shadows that have turned too blue or to help with a yellow cast. Or if you’ve found that adding your toning and matte/haze actions has brightened your image too much or it needs some pop added back in, then the Contrast Boost or the Add Back Depth are perfect finishing touches for your masterpiece.

In the Overlay Simple Tones you’ll find the powerful Artisan Classic Tones action that gives you a multitude of classic tones and looks that you can mix and match. Also in this category is the Effortless Black and White ... perfect for when you want to quickly turn your color image black and white with beautiful results.

Luminosity: The Essence

Fresh Start Actions Use these actions to begin your edit or when extra adjustments to exposure, color, etc. are needed. Next, continue on to your Base Color or BW Workflow action(s). Add Some Warmth - For too cool images, adds warmth, reducing the blue and cyan tones. Cool It Down - Cools down too warm images by reducing the yellow and red tones. Enlighten Me - A fabulous action to ramp up the exposure and brightness. Dimmer Switch - Bring the brightness back down overall. This is a great action to run at the end of an edit if you find the toning you’ve done has caused an image to become too bright. Tone Down Highlights - Works on the too bright highlights of an image to tone them down. Brush On Highlight Saver - Paint on the Tone Down Highlights effect just where needed.

Verve - Packs a wallop of vivid color, fabulous clarity and bold but clean processing. Sunday Morning - Radiant and full of sunshine, Sunday Morning will add lively warmth and illuminate your images with it’s soft flush of color.

Delicate - Light and airy, for a more subtle edit. Just a slight amount of haze and perfect for newborns, indoor shots and when your image needs just a touch of a boost.

Organic - Earthy, full of beautiful color with a matte finish.

Paint a Deep Rainbow - Brush on a deep, velvety and saturated burst of color as desired. On the Spot Crisp - Paint on some clarity, detail and sharpness just where needed. Can be used as a quickie way of sharpening eyes (just go lightly!).

Matte Portobello Rich Deep Matte Earthen Ruby Paint on Edges

On the Spot Angel Soft - Brush on a very delicate, angelic blur as desired. On the Spot Punch - Use where needed to add some deep clarity and contrast boost. Paint on Warm Vignette - Allows you to brush on a warm, deep vignette to naturally deepen your image edges. Use a low opacity, large and soft brush to build up the effect.

Deep Crisp Details - Gives your image’s details some extra clarity that is a bit dramatic. Light Crisp Details - A lighter touch to add clarity to the details in your image.

Softness and Blur Be certain to paint back your subject’s face, or the entire body of your subjects, in order to maintain detail and sharpness. Often I will paint back the face of the subject at 100% and then drop my opacity on the brush to about 50% and paint over the rest of the subject, leaving the action on the remainder of the image/background.

Whispers - A soft, light and whisper-y blur. Velveteen - A gorgeous velvety blur with rich depth and smoldering colors. Petal Soft - A soft as silk action with a deep matte finish.

Workflow Tools Sharpening for Print - Perfect sharpening for your high resolution prints. Sharpening/Resize for Web (Select Your Size) - Just right for the web sharpening and the option to select your own custom size needed - great for blog posts, etc.

Sharpening/Resize for Web (960) - Facebook Horizontal - Specifically created for Facebook horizontal images - resizes to 960 pixels wide and sharpens.

Sharpening/Resize for Web (720) - Facebook Vertical - Specifically created for Facebook vertical images - resizes to 720 pixels tall and sharpens.

Noise Reduction - Helps reduce minor to moderate noise/grain in images. Revert to Original - If you want a complete do over from the last save. Flatten All Layers - Flattens all layers. Make Layer Mask - Creates a layer mask for the layer selected.

Within the Toppings for Your Base category you will find the most useful and powerful of all The Blender actions that will run the heart of the Artisan actions in one swoop, leaving you with 34 gorgeous actions all stacked together and ready for you to turn on each one to quickly see the results and even better, turn on a couple here and there and adjust the opacity as needed. For those who enjoy using toning actions just here and there, especially beautiful to do with backgrounds, you can run the The Artisan Paint On Blender and simply paint on each action wherever you want a dab of added color, toning, matte, etc. The best way to get to know these versatile and incredibly varied actions is to use the Blender and then experiment from there.
