SEM Products seal of approval The rollout of SEM Products’ seam sealers is giving local repairers access to the enhanced speed, efficiency and quality of advanced technology solutions.

D

espite being relatively small, SEM Products has a long history of developing innovative, customer focused solutions. This made it an ideal fit with PPG, resulting in an acquisition of the U.S. based company in late 2018. That is exciting news for local repairers, as this region becomes the very first, outside North America, to access its market proven range, consisting of specialised adhesives, fillers and sealers designed to achieve an OEM style finish on automotive repairs. With such a large range to roll out, local launches are taking place in stages.

1K SEAM SEALERS Leading the first wave is single component seam sealers, all of which feature unique SEM Products formulations that are effective, reliable and easy to use. Comprising a regular version and a sprayable option, they provide excellent adhesion direct to metal and give an ideal amount of ‘working time’. They are paintable immediately, remain flexible without shrinking or cracking and quickly produce a professional appearance.

DUAL-MIX™

Seam seal, cure and get on with the job! Following on in early 2020 and featuring next-gen, fast curing 2K technology not seen before on the local market, the all new range of Dual-Mix™ Seam Sealers is set to change the way you seam seal. Importantly, it eliminates the main downside of 1K seam sealers – they take as long as 24 hours to fully cure (depending on ambient temperature) and moving the job beforehand can negatively affect that seal. In contrast, Dual-Mix™ 2K Seam Sealers cure in a matter of minutes, even when applied heavily. With just a small shift in thinking, this opens up a host of opportunities to reduce cycletime and increase productivity. It can be used in the same way as a SEM Products 1K seam sealer but the fast cure time means the technician can continue with the job, complete it more quickly and get it out the door and back to the customer. No matter which one you choose, you get the same userfriendly characteristics, speed and OEM mimicking performance!

COLOURS, FINISHES AND APPLICATORS TO MIMIC FACTORY APPEARANCE. As well as coming in a range of colours designed to match OEM sealers, SEM Products seam sealers (both 1K technology and Dual-Mix™) are backed with a variety of cleverly designed applicators, nozzles and accessories to make it easy for technicians to mimic the OEM appearance. Along with manual and pneumatic applicator dispenser guns, there are options to apply sprayable sealers to replicate the original factory finish.

PHASER gets the 2

PROTEC NEWS AND MORE

Complete with SATA’s revolutionary X-Nozzle System, the new generation SATAjet® X 5500 PHASER™ is all about style, sophistication and precision performance.

D

eveloped in co-operation with the Porsche Design Studio in order to create a whole new view on spray gun design, the original SATA PHASER model has been a big hit with those looking for killer looks, combined with advanced technology. Now the next generation PHASER is here and, like its predecessor, it’s no average spray gun. For a start, it looks seriously cool thanks to its clean, sharp styling, high-quality materials and superb black anodised body. Perhaps the biggest news is that the latest SATAjet® X 5500 PHASER™ also takes advantage of the groundbreaking nozzle technology seen on SATA’s current premium model, the SATAjet® X 5500.

The new Gold standard A major upgrade, featuring a new, computer designed, multi-hole configuration, once again proves that nothing is as good as Gold!

W

ith a reputation for all-round versatility, efficiency and quality of finish, the Gold range is MIRKA’s most popular paper backed abrasive but now it has received an extra performance boost thanks to a major makeover. Based on customer feedback and intensive research, the MIRKA team has introduced a variety of improvements headlined by new computer designed multi-hole patterns. Gold 150 mm (6”) discs are now available with the new patterns which have 37 holes for coarser grits and 121 holes for finer grits.

Dubbed the SATA X-Nozzle System, it features two distinct spray fan shapes that remain constant right across the nozzle spectrum. As a result, this advanced new nozzle system lets any painter easily synchronise their SATA gun to their application style, the paint system they use and the environment they spray in. Available in a selection of nozzle sizes and in RP and HVLP technologies, the exclusive SATAjet® X 5500 PHASER™ will be an ongoing part of the local SATA range and can be ordered from approved SATA distributors. Whether you choose it for its sensational looks or its advanced technology solutions, you get a high calibre piece of spray equipment that is like nothing else on the market!

Superior dust extraction is a long term MIRKA strength and the new Gold multi-hole patterns have been created to take it to the next level. By increasing dust extraction capabilities (compared to traditional paper abrasives and other multihole patterns on the market), this directly translates into improved workshop productivity and longer lifespan. What’s more, a reduced risk of clogging the abrasive surface not only increases speed of cut and durability, it also makes it easier for the operator to see the surface which improves the quality of finish. Best of all, this new MIRKA Gold abrasive works perfectly in conjunction with the outstanding MIRKA power tools range.

Iridium - a cut above The launch of MIRKA’s Iridium® range introduces a flagship paper-backed abrasive where you benefit from unique-to-the-category, performance boosting technology.

T

he research and development team at global surface finishing specialist, MIRKA, has a reputation for thinking ‘outside the square’ to come up with solutions and they have done it again by creating Iridium. It’s designed for an ultra-productive paint stripping and paint preparation process thanks to super-efficient dust extraction, with no clogging and an exceptional lifespan.

TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN While you don’t necessarily need to understand the technology behind Iridium, it does help to explain its market-leading performance. The key difference actually stems from the new manufacturing process. Instead of the traditional electrostatic method which tends to apply the abrasive materials randomly onto the paper-backing, Iridium uses a unique new process where the blend of ceramic and aluminium oxide abrasive grains is very precisely applied to the backing material. As well as even distribution, there is also a lot more grains per disc. In addition, MIRKA also developed a state-of-the-art new resin system to securely lock the grains down. What’s more, after being UV cured, it essentially leaves a non-stick characteristic on the abrasive surface so that Iridium effectively repels dust.

TUNED TO PAINT STRIPPING AND PREPARATION By powering through even the hardest of clearcoats, Iridium saves valuable labour time and job cost. At the same time, the abrasive grits for paint preparation have been specifically optimised to produce a scratch pattern that works perfectly with primers and fillers. Combined with the clog free abrasive coating, this helps eliminate costly reworks by preventing the development of dust pills which leave frustrating pigtail swirls in the surface. Available in a selection of coarse through to fine grits, Iridium discs and strips are perfect for use with MIRKA’s hugely popular electric tools but they also fit all backing pads. No precise alignment is needed – simply place the iridium disc or strip onto the backing pad and it’s good to go for ultraefficient dust extraction. Iridium has been thoroughly tested under local conditions where it out performed the best premium abrasives on the market. But don’t take our word for it – give Iridium a try or have a demonstration and see the advantages for yourself!

Combining that with a new computer designed, laser-cut multi-hole pattern and you have an abrasive with exceptional dust extraction and an aggressive cut that lasts and lasts.

Clear 1 litre Convenience T

o provide an economical option and greater convenience when it comes to tackling smaller jobs, CC-9240 Carmaster HS 2 pack Clearcoat is now available in a handy 1 litre can. Despite the smaller pack size, this reliable, high solids, acrylic urethane clearcoat still comes with features, including great flow off the gun, terrific gloss and easy polishing, as well as a choice of ‘normal’ hardener and a ‘hot weather’ hardener to help adjust to different application conditions. This cost effective clearcoat is designed to be used on general refinish type work and is available now from your Protec distributor.

Clean Choice

When it comes to wash ups after a job, SX401 ONECHOICE® Gunwash is the effective new way to get your guns spick and span.

A

fter the discontinuation of 101 Gunwash, PPG has come up with a new and even better solution in the form of SX401 OneChoice Gunwash. Indeed, it has been specially formulated to provide quick and thorough gun cleaning no matter whether you are using an epoxy or enamel coating, through to modern 2K refinish systems. Field trials have seen it receive excellent feedback. SX401 OneChoice Gunwash is available now in 20 litre, 60 litre or 200 litres containers.

Bold ‘55 Attention to detail, a series of subtle custom touches and an eye-catching Protec paintjob have transformed this 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air from sad and sorry to bold and beautiful!

S

ince throwing open the doors to his business, Rides Custom Shop, four years ago in the northern NSW town of Lismore, Andrew McDougall has seen a growing catalogue of restoration jobs flow through and this has generated many fond memories. One of his proudest moments was handing over this 1955 Chev but, he remembers, it did not start well. “It’s a Brisbane based car that originally came to us to finish a few things and do the paint. However, when we looked into it, there were ‘issues’ beneath the surface. The owner was shocked and disappointed but they commissioned us to do a full bare metal strip down. We took the whole car apart, re-sandblasted it and ended up having to put two rear quarter panels on and do a multitude of other repairs. The opportunity was also taken to do a few modifications. It’s designed to be very recognisable as a ’55 Chev Bel Air but with subtle touches around it that the owner wanted. For example, we did some extra modifications with the righthand drive conversion and fabricated some custom metal work for the dash, the engine bay and the front guards. At the same time, we worked hard to make the panel gaps close and even all the way around by modifying panels and door edges. A car this age would never have had such tight panel gaps when it left the factory but, ultimately, it’s that sort of finer detail you pay for with this level of car.”

Almost everything was done in-house at Rides Custom, with jobs such as upholstery outsourced to a Lismore business. Indeed, the custom-made interior is a highlight, complete with special leather imported from Scotland. Under the bonnet is a 350ci Chev V8 which Andrew describes as a ‘healthy’ crate motor with a few pretty bits. One of the biggest challenges was reproducing the colour the owner wanted and Andrew did it with Protec support. “The green and white colour scheme was the owner’s idea and it was up to us to execute it. In particular, getting the green colour right and consistent across the whole vehicle was by far the most stressful and difficult part. Both colours are three-layer pearl but the custom green just highlights any imperfections so it came down to close attention to detail prior to painting. The painting process was also crucial and for that we relied on Colin Bremner (Protec Technical Demonstrator Manager QLD) – he provided all the specs and guidance we needed.” “We set up with Protec when the business opened. We did all the homework on paint systems and the combination of the quality of the Protec products and our local distributor made the decision easy. Although we use a wide variety of Protec products, as well as products from PPG’s Commercial Performance Coatings range, we stick to Paraglaze for restos. Colin works closely with us to get the best combination of products from bare metal to clearcoat.”

PROTEC NEWS AND MORE

Despite the show car standard of the finished ’55 Chev, Andrew says it was always built to be a ‘driver’. Indeed, it’s regularly driven, including to car shows where it has been rewarded with a whole cabinet full of trophies! According to Andrew, it’s one of the cars that helped establish the excellent reputation Rides Custom Shop has today. “The earliest resto we have done is a 1927 T-Model Ford but the bulk of our jobs seem to fall into the ‘60s and ‘70s and mostly early Holdens and Falcons. The latest car we have is probably the XE Falcon in the shop now. We have six other restos in at the moment and 14 more booked in so we’re pretty much booked out until 2021. I believe it’s all about thorough attention to detail and the simple care factor. I am out to do it right for our customers, while also making a profit for ourselves. For me, it’s just a love and a passion!”

Sheen tops The Bash 2019

When it came to fundraising at the 2019 Variety Bash, there was none better than Sheen Panel Service and PPG was proud to support ‘Car 50’ on its epic journey.

T

he team from Melbourne-based MSO, Sheen Panel Service, has put in a superb performance to complete the 2019 Variety Bash, comprising 5102 kilometres from the start in Melbourne all the way to finish in Geraldton, WA. As they trekked across the country in their faithful Holden WB Statesman, the intrepid travellers were not idle – indeed, the Sheen Panel Service team managed to raise a staggering $402,000 to be named the highest fundraisers for 2019 Variety Vic Bash. Throughout the 11-day event, entrants stopped at local towns along the route to visit schools and organisations where they could see the direct impact of their fundraising efforts aimed at helping children and their families. Overall, this year’s Bash raised $1.82 million – the highest amount ever raised and a credit to everyone involved!

Wealth of knowledge With the aim of putting old heads on young shoulders, the ‘Tiki T’ project is boosting the skills and confidence of young people as it creates the next generation of hot rodders.

D

espite a passionate membership base, the Whangarei Rod & Custom Club, in the Northland region of New Zealand, had one worrying statistic – the high average age of members. As a result, the club decided on an innovative community project that gave local school students the opportunity to learn how to build and paint a hot rod from scratch. Not only that, the club actually funded much of the project and sought sponsors, including Protec which was happy to contribute. After partnering with the Automotive Academy at the local Tikipunga High School, the initiative swung into action in early 2018, says club president, Barbara Massicks. “Each week six club volunteers, who are retired gentlemen, would come along and guide the students through the build process. Nothing was off-the-shelf so it was a huge engineering feat as the students fabricated or rebuilt all the components that went into it. For example, we were donated a Chrysler V8 motor but it needed reconditioning. The students stripped it down and we found a local business who took them into the workshop where they reconditioned it. Plenty of work also went into the body. It’s a traditional Ford T-Bucket style hot rod but we decided to widen and lengthen the body to give more space.

It was a massive undertaking for the students to cut, refibreglass and reframe the body and prepare it for painting. Our local Protec distributor, Wynn Fraser Paints, organised all the Protec products for us to use from start to finish and we got fantastic help and support from Cottrell & Ross Panel and Paint where the colour scheme was applied. It draws on the school colours of maroon, gold, black and white and I think it looks quite startling in its Protec finish – we couldn’t be happier!”

Tech Tip

with Nathan Horsley Technical Demonstrator / Territory Manager – VIC

S

ince its debute, Mazda’s 46V Soul Red Crystal has become a favourite with buyers and is now available across a range of models. This makes it more likely than ever that a Mazda in this exotic colour will arrive in your paint shop and that means being prepared, says Nathan Horsley. “It’s important to understand that Soul Red Crystal uses a different system to the previous Soul Red but, once you get your head around the tinted clearcoat used as a translucent mid-coat, it’s quite straightforward to do. Getting the best end result comes down to following the process and doing all the ‘one-percenters’ right. Some of the steps to look out for are to always use the recommended groundcoat and to heck the sprayout card against the car. Every painter is different – some apply product a little heavier and others a little lighter – so it’s important to mask off the sprayout card into different sections with, say, two coats, three coats and four coats of midcoat. Then you can check each of these against the car you are working on to see the best match. I would also recommend using the same top quality clearcoat for both the midcoat layer and final clearcoat. Avoid putting the tinted midcoat on too heavy – it does not have to look like the final coat of a conventional clearcoat layer. If it’s applied too heavily, it tends to ‘frame’ around the edges of doors, guards, etc. and may cause it to go darker. Winding the fluid back half a turn to a full turn helps reduce the risk of this happening in the tinted midcoat.”

The car has been built to road register and, in early 2020, the finishing touches were being applied before driving it to the popular Beach Hop festival at Whangamata in late March 2020 for its official unveiling. Over the next 12 months, the plan is to show off the student’s work at as many events as possible before the ‘Tiki T’ goes to public auction. Remaining proceeds will then go to the Automotive Academy at the Tikipunga High School. Although there were challenges along the way, such as the current generation’s need for instant gratification which is difficult to maintain over a two-year project, Barbara says it was an immensely satisfying initiative. “Seeing the youngsters gain some really good skills as they work together with the older volunteers has been massive. I just love seeing them proud of what they have achieved and they should be proud! Best of all, they are like old mates, now. They have gotten to know us and the club so well, we are hoping they will be friends for a long time!”

“While painters should be aware of the differences, a job involving 46V Soul Red Crystal is not something to be afraid of. We have done specific training with many of our customers and when they have the right products, such as the AquaMax Extra waterborne basecoat system or the Paraglaze basecoat system, along with the right process and tools, it quickly becomes very straightforward.” If customers have any concerns, getting support is as simple as contacting your Protec Territory Manager or Protec’s Customer Service hotline 1800 076 466 (Aust) or 0800 436 783 (NZ).

Winning formula The long running PPG International Colour Matching Competition is proving to be an excellent formula for improving colour matching skills. Do you have what it takes to win?

D

espite the hi-tech colour tools painters have at their disposal these days, manual colour matching is still a crucial skillset. For well over two decades, the annual PPG Colour Matching Competition has given apprentices across Australia and New Zealand the opportunity to hone colour theory and colour matching practical skills and 2019 was no exception. It climaxed with nine finalists gathering at Kangan Institute’s Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE), in Melbourne’s Docklands precinct, to battle for the coveted trophy.

2020 COMP – HAVE FUN, WIN PRIZES, BE A CHAMPION! As the region’s longest running colour matching competition kicks off for 2020, it asks the current crop of automotive spray painting apprentices a key question – ‘do you have what it takes to be champion?’ Regional and state competitions are being held between June and August, and apprentices currently attending a TAFE college or completing an equivalent course are strongly encouraged to ‘have a go’. And why not – the PPG Colour Matching Competition is a fun way to get valuable colour matching experience, along with bragging rights on your mates! Not only that, there are great prizes to be won, including SATA spray equipment and MIRKA tools. Speak to your training provider, get your entry in early and the PPG team will look forward to seeing you at the 2020 PPG Colour Matching Competition!

Sticking to the format of preliminary competitions, the final involved matching two colours – a solid COB and a metallic – with 60 minutes allocated for each. To ensure individual skills were the deciding factor, each finalist got an identical workstation, with all equipment and tinters necessary to match the colours. In addition, judging was done ‘blind’, thanks to final spray-out cards that were numbered, not named. After a tense final, it was Western Australian thirdyear apprentice, Jarrah Moon, who was announced as the 2019 winner of the prestigious event, taking home some very cool prizes.

Staff Profiles As well as a strong product line-up, Protec is also getting praise for its impressive customer service. Indeed, behind the Protec brand you will find some of the best people in the business.

TOM MCCOY, BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER – NSW

W

hen it comes to expanding his skills over and above being a spray painter, Tom says he had the perfect mentor in his late father, Norm. “Dad owned a large smash repair business and as a kid I was always there – that was my choice. Dad taught me the ropes and he was keen for me to learn more of the business side.” After spending time outside the industry, where he started and built up the Stolen Recipe beverage company, Tom says he has now followed his passion back to collision repair, taking up his role with Protec in mid2019. “The Protec product range is very different to just a few years ago and I feel the quality of customer service we offer is a lot better than other paint companies. Being customer focused is something my father drilled into me from an early age. What excites me is the challenge of working with customers to help them grow their business, as well as our business so it’s a win / win. It’s not just about selling them paint – everything I have learnt in business from and running my own company gives me a lot of knowledge to add value for our customers. At Protec, I believe we deliver on product performance, we deliver on price and we deliver on service. Very few can say that!”

DAVID LA SELVA, TERRITORY MANAGER – VIC While he was not a big fan of school, David has always enjoyed cars so following in his father’s footsteps to become a spray painter was a great solution. After spending 15 years in the trade building on his knowledge and experience, including five years as a paint shop foreman, he brought that knowhow to his Protec role in mid-2019. “I saw it as an opportunity to use my skills at a large, global company. I am the Territory Manager for the northern suburbs of Melbourne where I look after whatever our customers need. I am also able to use my experience to sort out issues and give them a helping hand with everything from gun setups to updates on PaintManager® XI software.” “When I was on the tools, I had used the old Protec system but, when I got to use the MaxMeyer AquaMax Extra waterborne system and the rest of the current Protec range, I could see the big, big improvements – I can understand why customers love them! What I enjoy about this role is the opportunity to see the different strategies each shop has for getting things done. For me, it’s all about building a bank of knowledge and experience which I can pass onto other customers when they need it.”

NATHAN HORSLEY, TECHNICAL DEMONSTRATOR / TERRITORY MANAGER – VIC For someone from Wagga Wagga, in southern NSW, Nathan “Often, people are says one of the biggest challenges he faced after moving surprised by how far Protec has to Melbourne in 2019 was the traffic.
