bit of extra speed in the refinish process is always welcome and the local PROTEC® Refinish Technical team has once again delivered, thanks to the launch of the new PS-6080 Accelerator Thinner. Indeed, it was customer feedback which started the development process, with users asking for an ‘accelerated mode’ for PC-3320 Paraglaze Maxiglaze HS Clearcoat and the Paraglaze Direct Gloss system. However, it was not just speed they were after – they demanded a no compromise option which still gave the same high gloss finish these products achieve in standard mode. The Protec Refinish Technical team, based at PPG’s Clayton, Melbourne headquarters, took up the challenge and came through with flying colours. Now, simply by utilising PS-6080 Accelerator Thinner, there is the flexibility to cut the bake time for either PC-3320 MaxiGlaze Clearcoat or Paraglaze DG in half, to just

As a Volkswagen enthusiast, himself, David has restored and sold plenty of older model Volkswagens over the years. In between, he completed a Business Degree and set about gathering extensive experience. This included working for various vehicle dealership franchises, as well as stints with Subaru Australia and Mazda Australia. As a result, David’s skillset covers virtually the full gamut, including parts and service, collision, aftersales marketing and new vehicle sales. In late 2018, he started a new chapter at Protec. “Joining Protec ticked a lot of boxes. The brand comes under PPG’s umbrella and that really attracted me. PPG has remained

Once mixed, there is a one hour pot life making this option ideal as a high productivity solution for quickly dealing with small components, right up to one large single panel or two smaller panels. What’s more, there are no downsides – it’s easy to polish, if it’s required, and it maintains the same premium shine and long term durability. With all those pluses and no minuses, why wouldn’t you take advantage of the speed and flexibility offered by PS-6080 Accelerator Thinner?

strong over a long period, they manufacture in Australia and it was somewhere I could see myself working until I retire. I also knew PPG from my time helping set up the Subaru Preferred Collision Repairer Network. We wanted high quality shops with high quality customer experiences and a lot of them were PPG shops. My role is about growing the Protec business in the marketplace and I cover from the Sunshine Coast, across to Toowoomba and down to the NSW border – some of the nicest geography in the world! It’s about educating people on who Protec is today. The range has totally changed over the past few years and we have added AquaMax Extra waterborne basecoat from MaxMeyer, so Protec really is a very good value proposition that produces excellent results. What’s more, with my business background, I offer more than just selling paint. Shop owners can also talk to me about other parts of their business and we can look at way to make positive changes. Protec operates inside a very complex and technical PPG business and that makes it a very exciting place to be!”

Having owned his ‘73 Ford Cortina for over 35 years, David Xuereb literally saw red as he created one of the best show cars Australia has seen.

mall moments in time often shape our destiny. In 1982, 14-year-old David Xuereb spied a ‘baby poo brown’ TC Cortina in a Parramatta Road caryard and subsequently bought it. Six years later he drove that same car to the first running of the Summernats. Wandering amongst the show cars with his brother, Mark, got the synapses in the back of David’s brain buzzing. It was left to bubble away for a time as marriage, mortgage and kids took over but, fast forward to 2006, and the time was ripe for the Cortina to come out of semi-retirement and blossom, says David. “Summernats in 1988 was the spark that started it all. Some of the ideas I had back then are now in this car. I actually wanted the Cortina to be a street car but after I tubbed it, did the chassis and started on the interior, the dominos fell and I realised it was going to be too good for the road. A lot of people came together to make it happen. My brother, Mark, and my cousin, Paul, helped with a lot of the panel work and I met Rod Cordingley from Rod’s Custom Restoration – he is a dead set artist. He said he was going to paint it in Protec and I had seen Rod’s work so if he was happy with Protec, then so was I. He did a fantastic job and it came up beautiful. And the boys at (Protec distributor) Auto West Paint Supplies were there to help whenever we needed something.” When it came to colour, David saw red – almost everywhere! Indeed, the red and chrome colour scheme has proven to be a real point of difference for the car. Even the 364 cubic inch Windsor V8 was finished in either chrome or red. Creating the slick, eye-popping effect took a lot of work, says David. “I didn’t want to mix and match colours – I just felt that it would not look right. We stuck with Protec red but used chrome as highlights, right down to all the polished stainless-steel bolts and washers. I spent hours and hours polishing them all – it was monotonous but I stuck it out and, when you combine it with the paint, it came up brilliant! “

Think Dynabrade and it brings to mind premium quality pneumatic tools that are built to last. Now, consumers across the region have access to this iconic gear.

One feature that blows people away is the fully painted suspension components, right down to the springs and dampers. David did much of the hard work, sandblasting components, priming and rubbing them until they were ready for Rod to paint. Despite this time-consuming process, David reckons there were bigger challenges in the project. “I fabricated the steel work, including the tubs, fixing the rust and filling in the plenum chamber but the twin-skin bonnet was one of the biggest challenges. It’s a six-cylinder bonnet with a hole cut in it and a four-cylinder bonnet top-skin welded in upside down. Fabricating the dash was another massive challenge – I must have had it in and out a thousand times!” After beginning in 2006, the epic project was finally unveiled at the 2018 Summernats. License plate TUF73C promptly walked away with a stack of awards and has continued to do so ever since, says David. “Our Cortina has picked up about four or five trophies every single time it has been shown. And, at each show we get an award for the paint – that is down to Rod and Protec. Rod is very, very fussy and he really knows how to get the finish right. We are now up to about 55 trophies in 17 months! It’s been bloody hard work for me and my wife, Lisa, and my brother and cousin, as well as everyone else who helped so to get all the recognition is great.” Indeed, Lisa Xuereb says the project is rolling proof of how far dedication can take you. “This Cortina shows that the average ‘Joe’ can do it – you don’t need a million dollars!”.

ver the past 50 years, Dynabrade has cemented a reputation for rock-solid reliability, longevity and industryleading performance. Now, PPG Australia has established a special partnership with the iconic American brand in order to make it more readily available to consumers across this region. In welcoming Dynabrade to the local market, Kurt Way (PPG Category Manager, Associated Products) says it brings an incredibly strong history of innovation and a very traditional USA-built philosophy. “Dynabrade has a very simple mind-set – produce very well engineered tools that are made to do a job and do that job very, very well! Right from the beginning, the company

developed a reputation for problem solving – to this day, it listens to the issues customers are having and develops effective solutions. Local customers will now be able to choose from a range of Dynabrade models aimed at boosting productivity and reducing overall job cost. We also see strong appeal from outside the traditional panel beating, fabricating and painting sectors. Grinding and sanding operations are very common in the light industrial and industrial sectors and that makes Dynabrade a perfect fit as a high productivity solution.”

Made to last Where other brands might design tools and then have them made overseas, every Dynabrade air tool package still proudly carries the words ‘Made in USA’. By continuing to manufacture at its headquarters in Clarence, New York, Dynabrade has maintained its quality and extraordinary attention to detail, say Kurt. “Dynabrade products are not cheap but they are definitely not throwaway items like some cheaper brands. Buy Dynabrade and you get very strong mechanicals that are built to last but that is not all. The air motors generate excellent torque which gets the job done quicker and easier and operator comfort is excellent thanks to lower vibration and noise level, lightweight and superb balance.”

Fully supported Thanks to the PPG partnership, Dynabrade arrives with a complete backup and support service. This includes an extensive stock of spare parts, as well as warranty and post-warranty repairs handled by a regionwide network of repair centres, complete with factory accredited experts to get your Dynabrade tool swiftly repaired and back in your hands. Training programs will also be available, along with access to best practice processes. While the sleek design of the new SATAjet® X 5500 gets plenty of attention, it’s what the game-changing new nozzle concept brings to your work that you are really going to love!

ou have to hand it to the R&D engineers at German spray equipment specialist, SATA. Despite the awesome capabilities of each existing model, they continue to come up with clever innovations that push the boundaries of spray gun performance and the new SATAjet X 5500 is a perfect example. In this case, the headline feature is the SATA X-Nozzle System. It’s based on two distinct spray fan shapes that remain constant in size right across the nozzle spectrum, making it easily adapted to suit all kinds of painters, paint systems and application conditions. In short, the SATA X-Nozzle System offers an effective solution to the downsides of existing nozzle technology where the size, shape and width of the spray fan and the available material flow rate tend to vary with each increase in nozzle size. As a result, this forces painters to make adjustments at each step to compensate.

MIRKA deletes cord, gains productivity MIRKA has done it again! After revolutionising sanding tools with the electric DEROS and DEOS, the new cordless AOS-B and AROS-B do the same for the spot sanding process.

G

iven all the advantage they offer in terms of performance, control and productivity, it’s no surprise MIRKA’s electric tools are such a big hit in the modern workshop. Via a whole host of advanced design innovations, the MIRKA Power

Instant fan favourite When purchasing the SATAjet X 5500, painters still choose between HVLP or RP technology but the SATA X-Nozzle System introduces the choice of two different fan shapes. Called ‘parallel’ for I-nozzles and ‘oval’ for O-nozzles, each has unique characteristics which different painters will prefer. However, the clever design means that, as the nozzle sizes increase, the material flow rate also increases in constant increments. Therefore, the painter no longer needs to adjust their technique because the spray fan size and width remain unchanged across the entire spectrum. SATA is the first manufacturer to offer this advanced type of nozzle system which, combined with all the features of the SATAjet X 5500, offers advantages which simply cannot be matched by conventional technology. No wonder SATA calls it the spray gun that is perfectly in sync with you! As well as remarkable functionality and exceptional atomisation (substantially reducing paint consumption), the SATAjet X 5500 also features a Whispering Nozzle™ design to reduce noise level and a newly designed fluid tip and air cap which eliminates the need for an air distribution insert.

SATA selector Which SATA X-Nozzle is right for your SATAjet X 5500 will depend on various factors and, to help, SATA has introduced handy selection tools, including a specific SATA webpage, www.sata.com/nozzlefinder, and the free SATA Nozzle Selector App for download to suit IOS or Android. The SATAjet X 5500 comes in the popular DIGITAL version (with a digital air pressure gauge built into the gun handle).

Why SATAjet X 5500? • Efficient – Considerable material savings under the same application conditions • Precise – Optimised material distribution for more uniform and enhanced atomisation • Silent – Optimised airflow geometry of the Whispering Nozzle™ reduces noise level • Low maintenance – No separate air distribution insert makes cleaning easier and faster • Revolutionary – SATA X-Nozzle System takes atomisation to a whole new level • Versatile and individual – Two fan shapes for each nozzle size helps match any application requirement, including the properties of the paint material, the climatic conditions or the painting method (application speed and control) • Consistent – Uniform fan size across the entire nozzle spectrum with linear increments of the material flow rate

Tools department has really pushed the boundaries on electric tool performance, including a pair of clever new spot repair sanders, says Kurt Way, PPG Category Manager, Associated Products. “By ditching the power cord, the AOS-B (32mm with a 3mm orbit) and the AROS-B (32mm with a 5mm random orbit), make it easy to move around the job without an air hose or power lead getting in the way or potentially causing damage to the job. Small and light, with a pistol grip for easy control, they accurately target just the area to be sanded and combine perfectly with MIRKA Polarstar SR abrasives. This keeps the job as small as possible, thus increasing process speed while gaining worthwhile labour time savings.” Unlike pneumatic sanders, the AOS-B and AROS-B require no lubrication which removes the risk of job contamination. At the same time, MIRKA’s state-of-the-art brushless electric motor provides excellent power and torque, yet doesn’t have the

There is around 16 hours of use, in applications such as spot repairs, and a full recharge takes just 45 minutes. Each tool comes with a spare battery which can be kept on charge, ready to go. As energy prices rise, the remarkable efficiency of electric tools is an added advantage. Indeed, tests show the AOS-B and AROS-B use only around 1% of the energy needed to perform the same tasks with a pneumatic tool. Having deleted the power cord, MIRKA’s compact, battery driven spot sanders offer no-hassle, electric performance that is a winner for repair process productivity.

e all know Product Data Sheets are important because they contain all the information you need to safely and effectively use a particular product. Unfortunately, the time when I often see technicians using them is after they have a problem – in other words, ‘if all else fails, read the instructions’! To help, Protec has a super easy solution for getting all the very latest Product Data Sheets at your fingertips. Simply go to the PDS finder website – www.pds.ppgaccess.com.au – on your phone or portable device and create a shortcut on the home screen. With this done, you can quickly and conveniently search for the PDS of any Protec or PPG product using either the

product name or number and the information is absolutely up-to-the-minute. And because it’s on your phone, which these days most people carry everywhere, you have access to this vital information virtually wherever you are. I would encourage all customers to read the PDS before using a product – it only takes a moment, after all. There are many situations where it can save you valuable time and hassle. For example, for a new product, don’t just go by hearsay or assume it’s the same as another product you have used before. Even if it’s a product you have used before, the PDS can give you useful information. For instance, you can quickly check if a particular primer can be use direct to metal, as a high build or a primer surfacer, or whether it has a Wet-On-Wet mode. With the PDS finder shortcut on your phone, there really is no excuse for not being up-to-date. Not only that, if the paint shop computer is Internet enabled, you can also add a shortcut to the home screen to make things quicker and easier there, too.

> Kleen as a whistle

>Are you colour capable?

Bodykleen has joined the ONECHOICE® universal ancillary brand making it easier than ever for you to clean up on convenience, quality and performance.

As vehicle manufacturers continue to use colour as a key selling point, is the refinish system you have chosen up to the colour challenge now and into the future?

T

M

ainstream vehicle brands have gotten more adventurous with colour because it’s all about selling more cars. While this is great for OEMs, all the average bodyshop cares about is ‘do I have the tools to efficiently and effectively refinish one of these colours when it rolls through the door’? It’s here that some people still believe refinish systems are all pretty much the same. However, the constant arrival of exotic vehicle colours (think Ford Ruby Red, Subaru’s K7X WR Blue and Mazda 46V Soul Red Crystal and 46G Machine Grey) has shown it’s not the case. Some paint brands struggle to match exotic colours, while others require extra process time in order to achieve a match. The insurance company ‘paint rate’ for the job does not take into account whether your paint system is fast or slow. Therefore, even if you are not running a high volume bodyshop, you can’t afford inefficient colour capability eating into your profitability. One of the key strengths of the PROTEC® and MAXMAYER® brands is that they fall under the PPG banner. ‘Colour’ is highly valued at PPG and this flows right from the OEM level, directly to users of the company’s refinish brands. As the world’s largest maker of transportation coatings, PPG has strong links to vehicle OEMs around the globe. As well as supplying a large percentage of the world’s vehicle makers with products (from e-coat and

N E W S

primer to basecoat colours and clearcoat), PPG’s R&D Teams actually work in conjunction with OEM personnel to develop new colours, pigment technologies and application techniques. As a result, when OEMs introduce them, PPG is typically able to access advanced information which assists in providing a refinish formulation and, if necessary, a repair process before it’s actually seen on the road. In addition, PPG operates a worldwide network of colour laboratories specifically to support colour in each region. The colour labs constantly feed data into a central database which is shared across PPG’s global network. Whether it’s an exotic new colour or a variant or special, these resources are all about keeping colour up-to-date. The net result is that bodyshop operators have the opportunity to save considerable time and energy simply by choosing a refinish system with strong colour capabilities, such as Protec’s PARAGLAZE® paint system or the AQUAMAX® Extra waterborne basecoat system from MaxMeyer. Sooner or later, one of today’s exotic new colours, or perhaps one that is set to be released in the future, will arrive in your bodyshop. Therefore, you need to have the colour capability in place (colour data, tinters, a spectrophotometer and the painter’s own colour library) to meet every colour challenge and deal with it as quickly as possible. These days, you just don’t have time for anything else!

o get productivity really humming you need to ensure the basics are done really well and Bodykleen is a perfect example. It’s a no-fuss product you can use to quickly and effectively clean vehicle surfaces prior to sanding. Protec now offers a whole range of super-efficient OneChoice products and it has now been joined by Bodykleen. This means it’s ideal to use with any of Protec’s premium paint systems, as well as the AquaMax Extra waterborne basecoat system (part of the worldclass MaxMeyer range from Protec). As well as efficiently getting rid of general traffic film (such as bug splatter, etc.), the high quality ingredients in Bodykleen make it an excellent choice for removing contaminates, such as mould release agents from new plastic and GRP components, sanding sludge, silicone polishes, heavy oil and grease. It can also be used to neutralise chemically stripped surfaces. While purchasing Bodykleen, check out the complete range of OneChoice products at your Protec distributor and think of all the opportunities they offer for boosting productivity without sacrificing the quality of the end result.
