, Editors Letter Hey Key Clubbers, Wow. It’s been quite a while since I’ve made a normal newsletter! In my defense, it has been pretty busy for all of us: LTG elections, Volleyball-a-Thon, officer elections, officer appointments and all that jazz. There’s been a lot of special editions but I’m glad that I can finally get back to making these newsletters. It’s sad to think that this might be one of the last newsletter that I’ll make. Just a couple weeks until DCON. Let’s make this service year count! Yours in Caring and Service, Pak Chau EHTHS Key Club Bulletin Editor

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

OFFICIAL WEBSITE

The ELIMINATE Games. TheEliminateProject.org. After weeks of stressful planning from the LTG of Division 1A Chris Addonizio and LTG of Division 1B Kelly Tran, Division 1finally had their ELIMINATE Games together at the Galloway Township Library. At first I wanted to go as a spectator and take pictures of the event for my newsletter but I was swayed by the other tributes to join the brawl. I arrived at the library that Saturday morning and I was ready to compete. There was a brief waiting time for the other tributes form all around Division 1 and some setting up but the games went started with the beeping of the electronic timer. The first game was a game I played before: Johnny apple stack. The tribute had to balance three apples on top of each other and avoid being the last or face elimination. I ended up with some pretty deformed and I was in panic mode since everyone around me had already finished their stacks but in the end I was able to beat someone so I was not eliminated. After some other tense challenges like a cup stacking and a midair pencil grabbing game, I still remained. The challenges that seemed so simple and stupid were actually surprisingly challenging and at times borderline impossible. The most fun and most challenging activity was the Ready Spaghetti. My friend and I had to transport stack cans on a table located on the other side of the room using only spaghetti and out mouths. All in all the ELIMIANTE Games was a really good fundraising idea. Tributes and spectators both got to have an amazing time competing against each other as well as get to get some inter-divisional bonding done. Even though I didn’t win for my division I got two things out being a tribute: I got to the satisfaction of having an amazing time with my old friends and newly made ones and more importantly I got the satisfaction that a mother and her baby are using those $10 to save herself and her newborn from maternal and neonatal tetanus

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT The ELIMINATE Games of Division 1A and 1B had several challenges for the competitors. Some events include: 1| Johnny Apple Stack: Competitors had to stack three apples one on top of another into a single column. Although it might have sounded easy, physics and deformed apples made the challenge a lot more challenging. 2| Stack Attack: Competitors had to stack a stack of 36 cups into a pyramid formation and then disassemble it correctly before the other competitors finish. One misplaced cup compromised the whole pyramid. 3| Pencil Flip: Competitors put pencils on the back of their hand and had to toss them into the air and catch them with a over hand grab. One pencil was easy but as it built up to five or six pencils at once, the task seemed nearly impossible. 4| Ready Spaghetti: Competitors partnered up and had to use raw spaghetti to try and transport can from one table to the other. To make it even harder, the cans needed to be stacked into a pyramid formation. Losers faced a double elimination. 5| Blind Ball: Competitors partnered up and had to use raw spaghetti to try and transport can from one table to the other. To make it even harder, The cans needed to be stacked into a pyramid formation. Losers faced a double elimination. 6| Bull Dog: Competitors held a ruler I their mouth. Each ruler had Tic-Tacs containers hotglued onto the sides. Competitors had to try and shake out all the pellets only using the swinging motion of their head and neck. It may sounds easy but the small opening at the top was no easy hole to get pellets through!

Cupcakes for Cops

BY PAK CHAU Bulletin Eidtor

It was a casual Wednesday night when suddenly I received a notification from Mr. Stevenson. My first thought was that it was just another project so I clicked and read through. I skimmed the email and found out the detective sergeant of Egg Harbor Township needed 50 to 75 cupcakes by Friday for their awards show! My first thought was that it was that was a lot of baked goods at such short notice. Could we possibly somehow get together that many pastries by Friday? Our Key Club pulled through when Celine Xia baked eighteen, Kristen Jones baked two dozen, and Tiffany Dang and Ryanna Giang working together and baking four dozen cupcakes! In just a couple days notice they cooked up a storm and donated a total of 90 cupcakes! It was glad to see how devoted our Key Clubbers were. Seriously— four girls going out of their way to bake 90 cupcakes for cops. However I’m also sad to see those amazing-looking cupcakes go. At least they’re going to people who deserve it—people that also help serve our home, school, and community! BY FATIMA BEGONIA General Member

Good Neighbor Bowl

On Saturday February 23, 2013 the Community Quest Inc. organization held an event at King Pin Bowling alley. The event was a family friendly event that invited every one of all ages to play. The afternoon session started from 3:00pm-6:00 pm and the evening session began from 7:00pm-10:00pm. The package included the bowling session, bowling shoes, and a food ticket for the players. Players for an additional $5 dollars could also participate in the Colored Pin Contest and other raffles. Community Quest Inc. is an organization that strives to improve the quality of life of New Jersey individuals and families by providing quality services in the field of customized housing and career development. For their very busy event on Saturday, the Community Quest Inc. organization needed volunteers to help out. Volunteers and Key Club members who participated were asked to help keep track of the Colored Pin Contest. If the player wearing a red wrist band and bowled a strike with the head pin being a colored pin, the volunteers would give them a ticket so they could go claim a prize at the front table. The night was a very fun event that allowed everyone to have fun. While raising money for a great cause.

Volleyball-a-Thon: Serving for Service

BY CECILIA KANG General Member

On Friday, February 22nd, Egg Harbor Township High School’s Key Club held its 12th annual Volleyball-A-Thon to benefit the New Jersey District Project. For the 2012-2013 service year, the district project is none other than the ELIMINATE Project—a partnership between Kiwanis International and UNICEF (one of Key Club’s preferred charities) to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus. Volleyball-A-Thon (VBAT for short) ran from 6PM to closely around 1PM, while setup started immediately after school hours. Teams started to check in at 5PM, and the high school’s gymnasium filled up quickly as the event started. The players took their courts, and the games began. The fundraiser itself was a great success. Students and faculty members exemplified great sportsmanship while also giving the games their all. Although everyone started getting tired as the time got later, players continued to stay energized and referees stayed focused. Attendees and volunteers enjoyed the experience and gave positive feedback. In fact, some players even exclaimed that they couldn’t wait until next year’s VBAT!

18 Number of referees refereeing the six volleyball games at once during the event. Each referee had designated shifts and swapped with referees that were off duty at set times so that the referees would not suffer from exhaustion or lose their voice too soon in the night.

She Will Be Your LTG!

BY CYNTHIA THURAIRAJAH Recording Secretary

Hey fellow Key Clubbers, my name is Cynthia Thurairajah and I have been elected as 2013-2014 LTG-elect of Division 1B. I’m from Egg Harbor Twp High School and I am currently serving as the Recording Secretary and previously served as a committee chair for International Partners. I’m very excited to be part of a board filled with amazing new and current officers as well as LTGs. My plans for the next service year include improvement of communication within the division and promoting new Builders Clubs and K-Kids. Passion for service starts young and I think by working together we can increase the membership of clubs as well as the overall dedication from members. I look forward to meeting all of you and serving our community together. (Left) Lieutenant Governor of Division 1A Christopher Addonizio, (Middle-left) Lieutenant Governor of Division 1B Kelly Tran, and Immediate-Past Lieutenant Governor of Division 1 Cecilia welcome their newest addition to the New Jersey District Board: Lieutenant Governor-Elect of Division 1B Cynthia Thurairajah, Cynthia will officially start her term as lieutenant governor as of DCON.

Once Upon a DCON

BY PAK CHAU Bulletin Editor

This picture was taken on the last day of DCON. It was right before we left. Valerie just became the new president and Parth just became the new vice president. Cynthia and VI officially took their places as the recording and corresponding secretaries. This was the first picture of when me and Michael took on our jobs as editor and webmaster. Now Valerie and Parth are about to graduate. Cynthia has moved on to soon become the Lieutenant Governor of Division 1B and Vi has taken her place as the president-elect of the club. Even Michael has taken the new position of recording secretary and I’m left to campaign for my position at DCON. It all passed within just a short service year. And another is about to start. (From left to right) Corresponding Secretary Vi Nguyen, Recording Secretary Cynthia Thurairajah, Webmaster Michael Tran, President Valerie Wong, Bulletin Editor Pak Cha, and Vice President Parth Parikh all took their position last year at DCON and this year at DCON everyone goes through another change.
