Dear Key Clubbers, It’s been a really busy week having to go to what seems to be an endless amount of events. From waking at 5:30 to volunteer at the Multiple Scleroses Walk to working past my bed time on these newsletters, I must say, I’m a little exhausted. Although I barely have any time left for myself I really don’t mind at all because all that time spent at events is worth it. Time isn’t wasted when you’re doing something you love to do—in my case that’s Key Club! Yours in Caring and Service, Pak Chau EHTHS Key Club Bulletin Editor

The long awaited Annual March for Babies (March of Dimes) finally took place at the Ocean City Boardwalk Music Pier. The weather was perfect for the summer and music was blasting through the boardwalk to get everyone pepped up. The walk consisted of a 5 mile walk from one end of the boardwalk to the other end and back. Hundreds of walker attended to help fundraise for one sole cause—to save and prevent premature babies. Environmental Committee Chairs Tyler Wan and Jesus Perez, Service Committee Chair Melissa Lam, Membership Committee Chairs Shirley Luo and Jasmine Lee and Recording Secretary Cynthia Thurairajah walk the Ocean City Boardwalk.

Amongst the other walkers, Key Club made an appearance as one of the many teams that attended. Together, our Key Club was able to donate $348.64 in total which far bypassed our goal of $114. We’ve also exceeded all of our goals from the previous years as well. Let’s try to compile even more next year!

Prom Fashion Show With prom quickly approaching, the Egg Harbor Township helped set up, find donations, and run the first ever Kathleen’s Closet Prom Fashion Show. The fashion show was organized to help model and sell slightly used and cheaply priced prom dresses. The profits and proceeds benefitted the New Jersey Food Bank. Not only did it helped the food bank but it also made prom cheaper for those who needed dresses. Many hours of preparation were put into organizing the show. Some of the guys, including me,

helped the girls up onto the catwalk and aided them getting off. It took a lot of time to prepare all of the girls’ hair and makeup so they could strut down the runway for a good cause. Eventually, the music was booming and the girls dressed as if they were going to prom. The hair stylists from fashion schools were curling away at numerous girls’ hair, the fashion show was going as planned. As the girls walked back and forth the runway and posing several times the audience applauses for the elegant models. 

General members Abby Sales (left), general member Annabel Corpus (second left), VBAT Committee Chair Jessica Pamfilo (middle left), Membership Committee Chair Shirley Luo (middle right), Reporting Secretary Vi Ngyuen (second right) and Recording Secretary Cynthia Thurairajah help model some of the dresses on sale.

Key Club in cooperation with Kathleen’s Closet collected approximating 70 slightly used dresses that were modeled and put on sale at the show!

Multiple Sclerosis Walk

General members Rebecca Wong (left) and Tracy Wong (right) help pass out T-Shirts to the Multiple Sclerosis Walk walkers.

BY DOMINIC DILLON General Member

The Multiple Sclerosis Walk on Sunday, May 6 was a rewarding and prideful event. It started off with walkers and volunteers registering and donating to the help victims of multiple sclerosis which affects the brain, spinal cord, and the central nervous system. Well over 500 people gathered there and nonetheless, our Key Club was there to help out by checking in all the walkers, giving them t-shirts and taking pictures of the walk. There was food and drinks for the walkers and all of those who were donating. Although it was a very busy service project to attend, there were many great moments throughout the day; one of

them had to be when a boy came up to me to donated $505 that he had saved! After the walk ,when people returned they receive a medal and lunch which was a variety of things from hot dogs and pizza to drinks like water and ice tea. It was an amazing event full of music, food, and fun! 

Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week comes around annually and this year Key Club decided to make cards for all the teachers at the Egg Harbor Township High School. A total of 238 cards were completed and put into the teachers’ mailbox by Friday, May 11. Card making, although sounds easy, was not a simple task at all. The card making session spanned from Tuesday, May 15 until Thursday, May 17. Each card had a custom hand-drawn design and a friendly message to each teacher. Throughout the school year, teachers had put up with lesson plans as well as teaching us and now Key Club gives back with a friendly card to appreciate their time. 

Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! 6

Field of Dreams

BY PAK CHAU Bulletin Editor

Bulletin Editor Pak Chau (left) , his “buddy” Mawule (right) , and Mawule’s mom (far right) at the Field of Dreams event.

Whenever someone asks me what my favorite event of the year is, I have trouble picking. However, on event that really distinguishes itself from the normal road clean-ups and food bank projects is the Annual Field of Dreams on Saturday, May 12. This year was my first time going and it was a life changing experience. During the event, children with disibilities of all different ages were sorted by their age and enjoyed a game of baseball with other children at the Dr. Jonathan Pitney Recreational Park. Key Clubbers helped guild the children from base to base as well as hitting the ball. I was paired with three different children throughout the day. I have to admit, it was hard work trying to have them cooperate and play correctly but one kid stood out; his name was Mawule. He didn’t talk at all but he seemed to know what I was trying to tell him by nodding and shaking his head. He was really enthusiastic about playing baseball and always ran for the ball. He was insanely

Community Pride Day

friendly to all the other children, voluntarily giving the ball to some children that were in wheelchairs or children that were too shy to get it themselves. Even if he got out or missed hitting a ball, there was always a smile on his face. Even though it was a mere hour of running around with him before he left and I had to partner up with another child, I got to know him pretty well and it was hard to part with him. The fact that I got to directly interact with the people I’m helping really gave me a new experience and renewed my perspective on Key Club. It’s not just an organization that fundraises for charity organizations but also a club where you really get to have hands on experience to help and care about someone. Caring—Our Way of Life. 

Key Club teamed up with the local Kiwanis Club for the Annual Community Pride Day. Starting early in the morning on May 12 at 8:30, Key-Clubbers and Kiwanians worked side by side and “Slam Dunked the Junk” along the busy street of West Jersey Avenue. I had the opportunity to meet the local president of the Kiwanis club, Mr. Hodson and work with him to clean up the road. After the cleaning up the road, Mr. Hodson drove us to the community center where other members of the community that helped clean up different parts of the township got together for a community luncheon.  (From left to right) Vice President Parth Parikh, Webmaster Michael Tran, Advocacy Committee Chair Anthony Woo, President Valerie Wong, Social Committee Chair Hai Le, Bulletin Editor Pak Chau, and future Key Club members Curtis Wong and Raymond Chau.
