, Editors Letter Dear Key Clubbers, We’re finally back in school and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who thought that the summer went back WAY too fast. It seems like just yesterday was Relay for Life and last week was the Kick-Off Party . I can’t necessarily say I’m glad to be back in school again but the one thing that I’m glad to start doing again are newsletters. Even though we were active in the summer, I missed the numerous projects throughout the school Year. It’s good to be back! Yours in Caring and Service, Pak Chau EHTHS Key Club Bulletin Editor

MESSAGES & ELIMINATE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome back to school, Key Cubs! I hope you are all getting used to your new schedules and enjoying your school year. To all the freshmen and new members, WELCOME TO KEY CLUB! :) I’m really glad that you all decided to join this wonderful organization! To all the old members, welcome back! Thanks for joining us for yet another wonderful school year. To all the seniors, YAY! We’re almost out into the real world! :P I can’t wait to spend time with all of you at Fall Rally, Induction Dinner, VBAT, and all the other events/projects that we have. If you didn’t know, my name is Valerie Wong and I am currently serving as your 2012-2013 Club President. I was also the club bulletin editor for the 2011-2012 service year. Key Club has become one of my most loved things in the entire universe–I mean, sure, it gets hectic at times, but it all comes down to one thing: service. As president, I hope to work with my officer/committee chair (OCC) board to provide more opportunities for everyone to obtain your required 50 service hours every school year. That sounds like a lot, but trust me, it’s not. It’s actually really easy for you to gain your service hours. Just sign up for projects and attend them! I want this year to be one of the best years that EHTHS Key Club has ever seen. And to achieve that, I need the help of everyone in this organization. I hope you all have a great time in this club and that no matter what your reason was to join this club, whether it be because of your friends or for college, you’ll learn to love this club and take advantage of all the opportunities this club offers you. You never know, maybe one day, you will be the proud President of this club. If you ever have any questions, concerns, or just want to talk, you can always find me! Thank you for joining Key Club and I really look forward to working with each and every one of you. Stay caring, Cubs! In Caring, Love, Friendship, and Service, Valerie Wong EHTHS Key Club President

Introducing ELIMINATE. TheEliminateProject.org. The New Jersey District Key Club’s main focus for the year is the ELIMINATE Project which involves the elimination of MNT (maternal and neonatal tetanus). With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International, and UNICEF have joined forces for the cause. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This process requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take approximately $110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families. (Source: TheEliminateProject.org) 

4-H Fair Fun For All!

4H is a club similar to Key Club in the sense that it allows youth to reach higher potentials The four “H”s stand for “Head, Heart, Hands, and Health”.

Tools 4 Schools

BY SELINA SU Treasurer

During the summer, the 4-H fair took place nearby. This was my second year volunteering at 4-H Fair and it was just as fun! I enjoyed working part of the time as a volunteer concession stand operator. I loved it because during the busy lunch and dinner hours and the job is extremely fast paced and so you are constantly busy and moving. There were some large orders and the entire stock of burgers and bags of chips disappeared in what seemed to be a blink of an eye. It was like an intense real-life version of the popular computer game “Diner Dash”! I also enjoyed working with the Kiwanians that also helped out throughout the fair. It was great to work with other branches of the K-Family since we all have same goal—to help our home, school and community. I also got to work some of the others things that took place in at the fair. There were a lot of different booths set up that had interesting knick-knacks to buy—sure wish I had brought more money. Some people performed throughout the day in events like karate and music and towards the end of the night Miss New Jersey made an appearance and even sang. Her voice was amazing! It was such a great experience and there is no doubt that I would try my best do attend again next year! 

BY CYNTHIA THURAIRAJAH Recording Secretary

It’s back to school month and everybody is in a rush to buy all their school supplies. Most of the time there are a lot of extra supplies that end up sitting in the closet. There are many underprivileged students and schools that can’t afford all their necessities—why not give those extras supplies? Get hours just by donating school supplies. Every year at Fall Rally, students donate new school supplies to the Community Food Bank of New Jersey’s Tools 4 Schools program which helps the underprivileged get the necessities to have a good school year. Two years ago, New Jersey Key Clubs donated over 1,156 pounds of supplies to the program which was an all time record! To help support the Tools for School program, anything from binders, notebooks, pencils and pens can be donated to Mr.Stevenson’s room located at E117. Hours will be given based on how much is donated. Remember to include your name and grade on the bag when you drop it off! Get some hours for helping the underprivileged afford to go to school! School supplies are gathered together and distributed at the New Jersey Food Bank to the underprivileged.

Kicking Off with a Kick Off Party!

BY AARON CHUNG General Member

The Egg Harbor Township High School Key Club’s KickOff Party was tons of fun. It’s main purpose was to try to recruit new members into the club. Although not as many people came as we anticipated, the overall turnout was great! A multitude of events were active at the Kick-Off Party. There was a kickball games in which Key Clubbers and their invited guests played on randomized teams to get to know each other more; similar to an ice breaker. Aside from that, we hosted a volleyball tournament which also helped fundraise for the ELIMINATE project. There was even some Key Clubbers and guests playing at the tennis in the courts. Even though the party was so much fun, it had some serious Key Club business behind it. The volleyball tournament and a concession stand earned money for the ELIMINATE Project and some incoming freshmen were recruited into the club before school had even started! We got to introduce Key Club as well as our focus for the year: the ELIMINATE Project. Each of officers and committee chairs explained their role in Key Club so that the incoming freshmen as well as interested upper classmen could better understand how things were run and whether or not they’d like join. Our first joint meeting at school with Interact at school was huge so I’m guessing the message got out—that Key Club is definitely a club worth joining!  Social Committee Chair Aaron Chung (bottom left) holds the spirit stick to help bring some sprit to the Kick Off Party and helps invite guests and recruit new members into the club.

CLUB OFFICE

Let’s “Keyp” it Simple

BY PAK CHAU Bulletin Editor

K

C

I

Key Club might just seem like any ordinary club but there’s actually much more to it. There’s a reason why it’s internationally recognized as a student-run community service club. Being student-run means that the whole club is run mostly by students. How does a massive club such as Key Club be run by teenagers like us? This is how it works: Rebecca Riley (left) is the 2012 Key Club International President. She is responsible for the Key Club at an International level and to oversee the international trustees. She meets with all of Key Club once a year at annual ICON.

First there’s the international board. The international board is responsible for Key Clubs across the globe and manage world service projects such as the ELIMINATE project. The are the highest possible positions that a Key Clubber can become and represent Key Club at an international level. The International Board is composed of an international President, a vice president, and a board of thirty-three trustees in which govern the thirtythree international districts. Our Key Club International President is Rebecca Riley and Caitlin Stroup. The trustee for our international district is Colten Meisner. Nicole Ventrone (left) is the 2012 New Jersey District Key Club Governor. She is responsible for the district of New Jersey and to over see all the lieutenant governors. She meets with all of Key Club at the annual DCON and RTCs.

After that, each international district is broken further into states and provinces. Each state or province has a district governor that watches over only their state or province; in our case New Jersey. Along with the governor is the district board including a secretary, an editor, and a webmaster. Our district board consists of District Governor Nicole Ventrone, District Secretary Celina Baquiran, District Editor Zachariah DeGiulio, and District Webmaster Lucas Dos Santos. Along with the district board are twenty-three lieutenant district governors to govern the twenty-three divisions that New jersey is split into. Egg Harbor Township is part of division 1B which is governed by Lieutenant Governor Kelly Tran. Kelly Tran and Valerie Wong (left ) are the 2012 Lieutenant Governor of 1B and EHTHS Key Club President. Kelly is responsible for the division and overseeing club officers while Valerie is responsible for the club. T hey meet at most general meetings and events.

Below the district, each division, which is governed by a lieutenant governor, has clubs. In division 1B, there are a total of five school: Absegami, Atlantic Christian, Cedar Creek, Egg Harbor Township, and Pleasantville. Each school has their own club officers. At the Egg Harbor Township High School Key Club, the officers include President Valerie Wong, Vice President Parth Parikh, Corresponding Secretary Vi Ngyuen, Recording Secretary Cynthia Thurairajah, Treasurer Selina Su, Editor Pak Chau, Webmaster Micheal Tran, and Sergeant of Arms Tiffany Luong. Even more broken down, there are also eighteen committee chairs to further delegate tasks such as collecting dues or planning social events. So basically, the reason why Key Club International works is because of a large group of teenagers gather together do something they love—to help people and they do that by working together as a club, as a board, and as a family. 

INTERNATIONAL/DISTRICT

The Torch of Service

BY PAK CHAU Bulletin Editor

“Pass the torch. Light the flame. Shine the light. Make some change.” Every year Key Clubbers from all over the New Jersey District gather at the one and only Six Flags: Great Adventure. Over three-thousand Key Clubbers attend annually to celebrate the service year. The meeting starts with the lieutenant district governors of all the divisions as well as the district board members introducing the ELIMINATE project as well as Key Club in general. Afterwards, the New Jersey District Board allows each division to show their spirit by cheering and screaming. The most-spirited division then receives the prestigious spirit stick that represents the undying spirit of Key Clubbers. The meeting then ends and Key Clubbers are allowed to roam the park and ride anything from the park—from King Da Ka to Bizzaro and El Tauro to Nitro. It also happens that at night, Six Flags hosts the annual Fright Fest event. Some Key Clubbers staying later in the night also get to take part in the Halloween based fun. If you still want to sign up for Fall Rally, it’s not too late! The due date for the forms are the 21st and they can be found outside Mr. Stevenson's. Only the first 100 people that sign up can go. If there are any questions, comments, or concern, please notify an officer through the Facebook page, through email., or directly at school! 

PEOPLE THAT ATTENED FROM EHTHS MORE THAN ANY OTHER SCHOOL IN THE SOUTH JERSEY REGION.

This service year, the Egg Harbor Township Key Club attended the Fall Regional Training Conference (RTC) that was hosted at the Southern Regional High School. Key Clubbers woke up early on a Saturday morning and arrived the Egg Harbor Township High School to catch the bus that goes to the Southern Regional High School. Upon arrival, there was a a morning breakfast for the Key Clubbers followed by a brief general meeting lead by District Governor Nicole Ventrone and her board to explain how the day would work. The day was divided into sessions and each session involved a workshop that was taught by a lieutenant governor. The workshops were designed to help Key Clubbers develop leadership skills needed to run a club. Finally, after the sessions ended, there was a lunch and a brief closing ceremony where a raffle occurred a lot of prizes were given away to the people who attended. Key Clubbers left with a lot of new acquired knowledge and some even made friends that they might see around at Fall Rally, DCON, or even ICON! I had a great time at the RTC where I got to learn a lot more of what my officer position is required to do. I got the opportunity to learn some new ice breakers to make meeting more fun and even some techniques to how to improve my newsletters. Throughout the RTC I also made some new friends and even made plans to meet up with my friends the next district event! This was my first time and it was a blast so I’m definitely waiting for the next RTC. Anyone who missed this RTC still has the opportunity to attend a conference hosted in the spring time. For more information, check out the Facebook page for any updates. 
