MESSAGES & ELIMINATE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE HEY KEY CUBS, HOW DO YOU FEEL?! What’s up, everyone?! I hope that you’re all enjoying the school year now that it’s October. Time pasts so quickly…but only when you don’t want it to. First of all, I’d like to thank each and every one of you for sticking through with the first few weeks Key Club and turning in all your membership applications, Fall Rally forms, and t-shirt orders on time! Round of applause for you guys! Right now, our club is standing at a solid 158 members. Hopefully, throughout the year, people will spontaneously join Key Club. If you have any friends that still want to join, tell them that it’s not too late! Key Club will always welcome new members. Second of all, Fall Rally is in five days! That’s so exciting! If you haven’t gone before, trust me, it’s one of the craziest things you’ll see in your high school career: 3,000 other Key Clubbers sitting in the bleachers to cheer on for the 23 divisions in the mighty New Jersey District. Speaking of Fall Rally, t-shirts will be here on Friday, October 5, so you will get your t-shirts the morning of Fall Rally! I’M SO ECSTATIC FOR THE T-SHIRTS! Key Cub pride <3! Remember to get to the high school on time (6:30am), sign in, and get your tshirt! Third of all, remember that projects are posted on Mr. Stevenson’s door at E117! If you want to gain your service hours, head on over and sign up! Keep in mind that once you sign up, you are responsible for showing up at the event. Write it down in your agenda book, the back of your hand (maybe not, because of ink poisoning), put it in your phone, or have your friends remind you. Key Club projects are what you make of it. If you think it’s boring, it’ll be boring. If you try an have fun while serving others, you’ll have fun! If you take any pictures and post it on Instagram, put #ehthskeyclub in your caption! This way, it’ll be easier for us to find your pictures when the Recognition Committee works on the scrapbook. I’ll stop writing now because it’s a wall of text…but KEEP CALM AND CARE ON, KEY CUBS! In Caring, Love, Friendship, and Service, Valerie Wong EHTHS Key Club President

WHY DID YOU JOIN KEY CLUB? A survey was taken via the Facebook page and a total of 106 votes were casted. The option to add more choices was available for Key Clubbers to put in their own input as well. The most popular 6 choices after 5 days of surveying are:

MESSAGES & ELIMINATE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE

Division 1b crewneck sweatshirts are now available for purchase. Help support your division and show some Key Club spirit! Each crew neck costs $17 and an extra $7 if the shirt needs to be shipped within the United States. All profits will go towards the ELIMATE Project and UNICEF.

Hello Key Cubs, I hope you’re ready for a wonderful year of service! What better way to start off the year than by attending Fall Rally on October 7th? This year, the theme of Fall Rally is the Olympics and our division will be representing… Canada! Come out and show your spirit alongside thousands of other Key Club members. In partnership with the Community Food Bank’s Tools 4 Schools, our district will also be collecting school supplies at Fall Rally for students in need of school supplies. Looking for other ways to show off your Key Club spirit? Pre-order a Division 1B crewneck sweatshirt and show everyone just how proud you are to be a part of such an amazing organization. Profits from the sweatshirt sales will benefit the ELIMINATE Project. The New Jersey District raised over $100,000 for the ELIMINATE Project last year, earning us the title of Most Money Raised for the ELIMINATE Project as a District at International Convention. We’ve done it once and with everyone’s help, we can do it again. For more information about the ELIMINATE Project, visit theeliminateproject.org. Catch you around, Key Cubs! Yours in Caring and Service,

Kelly Tran Lieutenant Governor D1B

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

Since October happens to be the month of Halloween, instead of talking directly about ELIMINATE Project, this page will be featuring news about one of the ELIMINATE project’s biggest partners -UNICEF. Like the ELIMINATE Project, UNICEF is a non profit organization that focuses on helping kids around the world. Whether it be to stop a certain disease or pandemic, build schools for children in need of an education, providing food for the underprivileged, or even setting up a pump system in villages in need of water, UNICEF is there to help. One of UNICEF’s biggest fundraisers in the Trick-orTreat for UNICEF which takes place the day after Halloween. MAJOR EVENTS EVENTS

Sweeping the School

BY HAI LE General Member

On the day of the high school clean up over 40 excited key clubbers showed up, eager to get a start on their hours. Gloves and trash bags were passed out, and Mr. Stevenson told us to stay safe while cleaning. The 40 something members were broken up into 5 groups and were given where to go and pick up trash. My group had a fun time, even though we were picking up garbage. We talked and sang our way through the whole clean up. Editor Pak Chau showed up unexpected and asked me to take some picture for the newsletter, so I did. These key clubbers are not camera shy. If only the battery didn't run out, I would've taken more pictures. In the end, we semi-cleared High School Drive from trash. My group even brought back a bucket we found. The event was a big success! Key Clubbers help clean up their home, school, and community to make Egg Harbor Township High School a place that they’re proud to call their school!

First Distress, Then Funfest

BY PAK CHAU Bulletin Editor

My alarm clock went off extra early and it was a Saturday morning; from that I moment I could tell it was going to be a bad day. I checked the fridge and there was no more milk—could the day get any worse? Just when I was getting ready to crawl back into bed and just sleep the day off, there was a Key Club event to go to. I really wasn’t feeling well but as soon as my friend came to pick me up and drive us to Margate, I knew my luck was about to turn. We found our way to the annual Margate Funfest and each one of us was stationed to help throughout the festival. I ended up volunteering at the Speed Pitch attraction which turned out to be really fun. I was amazed at how someone half my size could throw a ball twice my throwing speed. Eventually this little kid taught me how to throw a little better, but that’s another story. Overall, there were a lot of kids, and I’m pretty sure all the Key Clubbers had just as much fun as the kids. It was an event fun enough to turn my whole day around, and I’m sure to go to the funfest again next year.

INTERNATIONAL/DISTRICT

Key Leader, You Know! BY VALERIE WONG President

What are two words for arguably the best experience of my Key Club and high school career? MEMBERSHIP DUES! Just kidding, it’s obviously KEY LEADER! Key Leader is a three-day retreat for students in 8th grade to their senior year. This isn’t only limited to Key Clubbers; it’s open to everyone, even people in other states. To start describing Key Leader would be difficult; I don’t even know where to begin. Let’s just start with this: Key Leader changed who I am today. That sounds extremely corny and cliché, but trust me, it changes you. Last year, Key Leader was held at Camp Lebanon during the frigid month of December. However, this did not stop 70 students from attending this retreat. At the camp, you’re basically cut off from the world. It doesn’t mean that you can’t use your cell phone or anything; it just means that you only really interact with the other people there. To say that the people were amazing there would be an understatement and probably an insult.

The people you meet at Key Leader, whether they be in your neighborhood—a group that you get put into to spend the weekend with—or in another neighborhood, eventually plays an extremely important role in your life. Before Key Leader, I was more reserved and I had trouble speaking up for myself and for others. My personal values were in a jumble and I had no idea what to do with my life. But when I went to Key Leader, everything changed. It seemed as if my whole personality began to carve its way out of the usual path it followed. I became more outgoing, more open-minded, stronger and even happier. Brian Ritchie taught us so many things that will forever be engraved in my mind. It’s been 10 months since this weekend and I still remember it like yesterday. My words cannot manifest the experience I had during Key Leader. You will just have to experience it for your own. 

Lieutenant Governors from all over New jersey join in the Key Leader Weekend either as camp facilitators or just campers ready to bond with other members that share the same passion for Key Club.

Best thing about Key Leader? Building Close Relationships. Worst thing about Key Leader? Freezing Cold Weather. - Kelly Tran LTG 1b

Six Things for Six Flags

BY PAK CHAU Bulletin Editor

Fall Rally is officially less than a week away. Even though most Key Clubbers can’t wait to get to Six Flags: Great Adventure, there are a few things that are must-bring items that a lot of people end up forgetting to bring. Here’s a checklist of those necessities:

If It’s your first time here or you haven’t been to the park in a while, it is strongly advised that you grab a map to navigate the humongous park. Be sure to try the world famous Kind Da Ka and my personal favorite coaster, the Bizzaro coaster!

CANADIAN SYMBOL

CAMERA

This year, the Fall Rally theme is based on the Olympics. The Lieutenant Governor of our division, Kelly Tran, has been assigned to represent Canada. (During Fall Rally, a spirit stick is awarded to the club that shows the most spirit so show your Canadian spirit and support Kelly and we might win the spirit stick!) Show New Jersey what club is the best!

As Bulletin Editor I take an absurd number of photos everywhere I go, I’m most likely not going to stand in one designated to try and get a picture of everyone throughout the day. Bring a camera and help take capture the moments that you’ll cherish forever. Be sure to upload them online so that they can end up in future newsletters!

CASH OR CREDIT

CELL PHONE

Unless you bought the meal voucher, you are going to need money to buy food at throughout the day. You could technically sneak food into the park but it is both risky and frowned upon; buying food is your best bet for reenergizing yourself. There is also a vast amount of stores for souvenirs that you might want to check out so bring some money!

We’ve lost some people in the park before and the best way to get a hold of a lost child in a gigantic theme park is through a cell phone. Be sure to bring one for emergency purposes and make sure it’s charged. You might also want it for the bus because it’s going to be a long ride there and back. Don’t lose it on roller coasters - put it in a pocket!

SCHOOL SUPPLIES

APPROPRIATE CLOTHES

If you’ve read any of the previous newsletters then you should know that there is an event going on at Fall Rally that involves bringing in unused school supplies to Fall Rally in exchange for service hours. The supplies will be donated to the Tools for School program to help the underprivileged. Gain some extra hours and help out those in need!

It’s really common sense. October is not a warm month. The weather will be frigid considering the fact that it starts extremely early in the morning and that it’s autumn. Please don’t come in flip flops and a miniskirt. Bring sneakers and a jacket so you don’t get potential frostbite. It’s always better to over dress than under dress so dress in layers!
