, Editors Letter Hey Key Clubbers, In case you didn’t know already, MNT (maternal neonatal tetanus) has been recently eliminated from China! One of the biggest countries in the world can finally be crossed off the list; it’s great to know that we are making such a difference. It’s amazing that just by collecting loose change under your sofa or the coins that you find on the street are saving lives across the globe. It’s already halfway through the service year. MESSAGES & ELIMINATE PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Egg Harbor Township Key Club President’s Valerie Wong went as Batman to the “Hero’s of Service” superhero themed induction dinner.
After the recent Hurricane Sandy passed by New Jersey, The boardwalk was uprooted and many houses flooded and were turned to rubble. Egg Harbor Township High School Key Club in cooperation with other clubs is hosting a coffee house to help raise money for local victims of the Sandy. My dearest Cubs, So, Induction Dinner…what a night, huh? We honestly had no idea that anything crazy like that was going to happen, but I’m glad we got through it. You guys really showed your inner Key Clubbers by being patient and maintaining your behavior. Thank you to everyone for all your performances to help fill out the time. We truly appreciate it! Shout out to Sheikh Mahmud for singing “Good Girls Go Bad!” That was seriously the first time I ever saw you like that. YOU GO SHEIKH! Seeing everyone dressed up and celebrating another year of service was amazing. Everyone seriously made my last Induction Dinner worth remembering. I’m so proud to call myself the president of this amazing club. Also, thank you for bidding on the fantastic board members! That slow-dance in the end was the most awkward but funniest thing. We made $157.25 for the Hurricane Sandy victims! Speaking of Hurricane Sandy, Key Club is collaborating with student council, Interact Club, Art Club, and FCCLA to put together a coffeehouse for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. As you all know, Hurricane Sandy had a huge impact on the community around us. People who lived in the cities by the shore were shut out of their home and some still are. Some don’t even have a home anymore. We need your help, Key Cubs, to raise even MORE money for these victims and hopefully restore the shore as soon as possible. Together, we can help. Keep your eyes out for many of the different ways you can help at this coffeehouse! Keep calm and care on, Key Cubs! I love you all! Some things in life, we can’t predict; we can’t prevent. We can’t prevent a car crash, or a hurricane, or an earthquake, but there are some things that we can see coming and we can prevent. If you see an object about to fall, do you extend your hand to catch it or do you let it fall? If you could save the life of a child with the change in your pocket, would you? Sometimes, it’s hard to make an impact in someone’s life. And sometimes, it’s as simple as donating $1.80. The ELIMINATE Project is a global campaign that is the result of a partnership between UNICEF and Kiwanis International. In 1994, these two powerhouses worked together to successfully eliminate iodine deficiency disorder and in 2010, were reunited and set out to eliminate maternal/neonatal tetanus. Since 2010, 28 countries have eliminated maternal/neonatal tetanus
with the most recent countries being East Tanzania and China. There are currently 31 countries still devastated by this fatal disease. Maternal/neonatal tetanus claims the life of one baby every nine minutes. It is not a swift, peaceful process either. Maternal/neonatal tetanus works over the course of several days and is tortuous for both the mother and child. The newborn baby is extremely sensitive to light and touch. As the baby violently convulses, the mother cannot hold her baby without bringing it excruciating pain. My friend recently told me about an incident with his dad. He was locked out of his house, so he rang the doorbell and as his father came down the stairs, he slid and fell. He struggled to get up. Just as my friend had to helplessly watch from the outside, all a mother can do is watch as

her child approaches its inevitable death. What the ELIMINATE Project strives to do is protect the connection between a mother and her child. You see, to some, life is priceless. But to those affected by maternal/neonatal tetanus, three doses of a vaccine costing roughly $0.60 each puts the cost of life at $1.80. Think about it. The pennies between the cushions of your sofa can help save a life. The nickels that fall out of your clothes in the washing machine can help save a life. The twenty dollar bill sticking out of your friend’s back pocket, beckoning you to take it, can help save ten lives. So Key Cubs, friends, faculty, and honorable guests; I challenge you to live up to the title of “heroes of service.” How many lives will you save?

Trick or Treating for UNICEF is over and it was a success! On day one, it was first hosted at my house in Lacosta Lakes. Over 15 members gathered there and we split into groups of 4-5 and we ventured into the streets of Lacosta and Crystal Lakes. With the effort of our dedicated Key Clubbers, we manage to rack up over $173! We met with many generous people and even a man who went the extra mile to collect loose change from his workplace. Coincidentally, he collected them in a jar with our editor Pak’s name in big letters. I would like to give a shout-out to the girls who came and brought along their innocent and cute charms, and to Richie Nguyen with his great explanation of the ELIMINATE Project. On that same day two of the event, we trick or treated at the Fernwood Avenue neighborhood and at the Reserves. Key Clubbers met at our Volleyball-a-Thon Committee Chair member Alan Huynh’s house or at our Advocacy Committee Chair member Andrew Pham’s house. I participated at the Reserves after being threatened by our dear LTG Kelly. We raise over $60 and met plenty of nice people; it might just be because we know some of the residence and they can’t say no to us. As for the Fernwood people, they seem fairly generous with a total of over $100 from their neighborhood. Overall we raised a total of over $300 (unless my addition skills fail to work with me).

Other than just EHTHS Key Club members, some Key Club members from other schools were also invited as guests. Tenafly High School Key Club attended the annual EHTHS Key Club Induction along with their Division 16 LTG. HEROES OF SERVICE 11. 16. 12. November 16th was a night the officers and committee chairs had been working on for over a month. Although there were some setbacks the night was filled with entertainment. The names of the committee chairs and officers were announced and pairs of the OCC walked down arm in arm to the front of the room. After a few inspirational speeches given by President Valerie Wong, and LTG Kelly Tran, a short clip explaining the ELIMINATE project was shown. For those of you who did not attend, a speech given by Valerie not only showed her appreciation for Key Club, but her appreciation. Appreciation for everyone who has ever woken up early or stayed after school to serve their home, school and community. Shortly after, Golden Corral informed us that they had the A survey was taken on the Facebook in regards to what they wrong date for the dinner. Some other “heroes” that I would like to point out include the amazing general members. They really helped out by performing and keeping the mood upbeat. We also had an OCC dance auction. The idea of the auctioning off the OCC did not really come across as much of a fundraiser, but I was proved wrong when many members donated up to $20 to dance with some of the OCC. We raised $154.25 for Hurricane Sandy relief. The night concluded with a slow dance and a lot of cleaning up. I hope everyone a great time at induction dinner and I hope to see everyone at next year’s (and if you’re a senior, enjoy your Circle K induction).

EVENTS This year in support for the Hurricane Sandy victims and those who are still trying to recover in the aftermath, the some of the OCC members volunteered auctioned off for a dance. Each attendee of the Induction Dinner, last Friday night, received a free ticket at the door which could be placed into one of the officers bags for a chance to dance with an officer or committee chair if their ticket was chosen, it was time to tango. Additional tickets were sold for $0.25 each. The dance was optional and attendees had to option to just donate for the cause. At the end of the night, EHTHS Key Club raised $157 for Hurricane Sandy victims. Here were the results to the auction:

ELIMINATE Week Sneak Peak

Starting this year, EHTHS Key Club will be celebrating ELIMINATE week. Similar to Key Club Week, each day of the week will feature a certain way of emphasizing the importance of the ELIMINATE Project or spread overall support for fighting Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus (MNT). The week spans from December 3 to December 7 and ends with the ELIMINATE games.

EVENT & GOAL ELIMINATE GAMES ADOVCATE: Talk to friends, family, and even strangers about Project ELIMINATE and how it’s making a difference in the world. Tell them the facts and what we’re doing to stop MNT.
LEND A HELPING HAND: Sell ELIMINATE hands and help to save a mother and her newborn child. Each ELIMIATE hand ($1.00) give two out of the three vaccinations needed.
PAINT THE TOWN BLUE: Encourage everyone to participate in spreading the word about the ELIMINATE project and help support the cause. Hang up posters and dress in blue.
DINE TO SAVE LIVES AT TGI FRIDAY’S: TGI Friday’s restaurants from all over New Jersey have agreed to donate a portion of the profits made during the night to ELIMINATE. Pass out flyers!
UNITE TO THE END: Hold an event that unites the people in the community, not just Key Club, and spread awareness about the ELIMINATE Project and promote the ELIMINATE games!
OVERVIEW: Based on the popular book and movie series The Hunger Games, the New Jersey District Key Club will be hosting their first ELIMINATE Games Each division will host a primary game to select tributes. These Tributes will compete at the district-wide game. RULES: Entries must be submitted to your lieutenant governor (ours being Kelly Tran). Entrants do not have to be from Key Club. Each competitor must face off against one another in minute-to-win it games and spectators have the option to “help” them on occasion. competitors go through a bracket system and one by one, competitors who lose will be “ELIMINATED”. Two winners will be tributes to represent the division and face off at the district competition against other schools from other divisions. TO ENTER: Entry forms must be turned in to LTG 1B Kelly Tran before 12/7 along with a entrance fee of $10 that will be donated to the ELIMINATE Project. Spectators can watch by paying a fee of $5If interested, please see LTG 1B Kelly Tran for more info.
